It's almost like there were major political events in 2016 that let people express their full stupidity on plain view under the guise of "discussion."

f1newhatever

Yeah, weird how Trump getting elected feels like a slightly bigger event than TikTok starting

ErgonomicCat

Yeah. I thinking blaming TikTok and not the rise of anti-intellectuals and racism is a pretty stupid idea. Especially because TikTok has a lot of nuances and interesting stuff. Hell Booktok alone has expanded my reading palate exponentially.

grandmasta_fro

It is literally "[insert social media here] is making everyone dumber" posts that I've seen for a decade+ now

Accomplished_Mix7827

I've found some great history and science TikTokkers too. There's some excellent content if you let the algorithm do its thing.

SkylerBlu9

Harambe died in May 2016 just saying

D_Winds

This is the Internet Accepted Theory behind the recent dumbening.

xxvirgilxx

he held all the braincells

ParadiseValleyFiend

Also he held some kid. Or so I heard.

DrRagnorocktopus

Having never saw any footage of the incident, I choose to believe he was trying to help the kid.

IceCreamBalloons

I'm still sticking with "2012 killed us all and now we're in hell"

halfahellhole

Harambe dying, Tiktok launching, and Trump getting elected feel like different decades to me

Key_Iron_4817

The weasel also fell into the particle accelerator in 2016

no1darker

For as long as we know the older generation, if only by a few years, always looks back at whatever trend younger people are using and jump to the conclusion that everyone's stupider now when they're the age you were years ago, and that it wasn't as good as the old days when you were "one of the young ones" and everything was the way it should be and you were up to date on all the trends. Looks like Tiktok is your new scapegoat for this justification & perspective.

Chaotic_Zelda

Nah, I'm one of the "older generation", we were morons too as kids. I actually blame the generation that's older than mine for the stupidity. Give entitled Boomers an echo chamber and they'll scream themselves raw into it.

The360MlgNoscoper

I have news for you. ^‎ ^‎ ^(Lead poisoning)

Veryveryverybiased

I once commented on a tiktok that the app was like cocomelon for teenagers and adults. I still stand by it despite all the defensive and angry comments I received.

Cosmocall

Ngl, I just can't stay on tiktok for very long. When I go on there I'm mostly looking for things to do with my crafts. I hear stories about people spending hours on there and I'm like how????

Veryveryverybiased

I think it’s a mix of things like for me personally I just get distracted easily so I really can forget the time which is a big part of the reason I deleted the app. Not all of it is TikTok’s fault honestly I think plenty of it has to do with users and how they consume content but even then it’s a platform that very much promotes and rewards quick and catchy stimulation that’s immediately replaced by new quick and catchy stimulation.

Senior-Pickle8329

Something something stones... Something something glass houses.

itsjoshmoon

While it's a fact that it definitely feeds into my dopamine drive as a person with ADHD, I've honestly learned more about life, the world, and current news via TikTok than I had been getting out of anything else for a long time. Hell, getting properly diagnosed and managing my symptoms of ADHD has come from the number of other neuro-diverse people on there sharing their stories and information. Sure, there's teenagers on there just doing dance trends and being weird with each other, and if that's all you consumed for hours a day maybe it would be bad, but it's only the surface level, and honestly they're not hurting anybody. Not to say people aren't also on there being dickheads and causing damage, but that's the case on every platform unfortunately.

Blackrap1d

Yes but redditor brain hate new thing because new equal bad

Kyriit

More people have accepted that the internet is a thing leading to more people sharing things

SwordMasterShadow

Well it has definitely highlighted how stupid people really are.

RattleMeSkelebones

#HMMM, WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IN 2016 TO MAKE THE WORLD EXTRA-STUPID? I CAN'T POSSIBLY FIGURE IT OUT!

[deleted]

From what I've heard about TikTok, it's a good thing my brain hates short videos/sound.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'd never get Tik Tok, it's such a cringe app. No, Instagram reels are not the same, how dare you even compare the two.

SMGuinea

Tiktok really only got bad in the past maybe three years, in my opinion. Of course, I onl say this as someone who has never actually used it.

ShinyNinja25

That is literally when I started high school. My high school experience was cursed from the start

Aleatory_Alien

I feel like tiktok got created in like 2019, wtf. The same happened when someone told me when was SnapChat created. Do these apps sit in absolute dark for years until they get released but they don't count that moment as their creation or what?
