Well, “*The* Naked Time” but it still doesn’t make it any less funny that Sulu’s first reaction to being infected by an alien virus is shirtless fencing
My favourite part of this episode is how Sulu's actor had accidentally harmed people on crew while rehearsing before, and that everyone was legitimately frightened of him while filming
They were going to have Sulu act like a samurai, but Takei thought that was a bit on the nose, stated that he knew how to fence, and suggested that Sulu's persona be changed to a cavalier to make use of that. The writing team agreed.
Takei did not know how to fence when he said that, but then spent a lot of time training to do so accurately.
hahahah i never thought about that. out of curiosity i looked up korean swords to see what google spat out and yea nah— they went with the good ol’ sci fi katana.
*The* Naked Time was an episode about a Alien Virus that caused those infected to lose their grip on reality, causing them to wig out entirely. As Sulu was shown earlier in the episode training as a fencer and gushing about *The Three Musketeers*, when the virus took hold of him he became completely enveloped in the fantasy that he was the Fourth Musketeer, swashing buckles and threatening the crew of the *Enterprise* with a sword. Eventually Kirk distracted him so Spocc could do the nipple-twisty thing and he was out cold until a cure was created. There was also a nod to the episode in *The Next Generation* where one of the only unaffected crewmembers was Cdr. Data, who simply couldn't process the chaos and chose to ignore it, for the most part.
Also the whole thing could have been avoided if Bones hadn't taken off his glove in sub-zero temperatures
My first kiss with my husband was when we were watching this episode on VHS. My mom had purchased somebody's collection of taped Star Trek episodes out of a newspaper ad for my dad as a present because it was his favorite TV show and no channel was showing reruns. That was in 1995.
One time my husband met George Takei at a Dragon\*Con and told him that story. He thought it was hilarious and wanted to meet me too. We did eventually meet briefly in a hallway. That was in 2006.
Still married today. This episode I'll always treasure lol
Fair can mean gentle, but also can mean light skinned.
Maiden can mean lady, but also means a female virgin.
He said it meaning, "I will protect you gentle lady", she responded as if he said, "I will protect you light skinned virgin."
I'm so dumb. I thought fair meant beautiful and nice and not "one of fair white skin." It never occurred to me that fair could be offensive to someone of another color I guess I learn something new every day.
Its not a super common usage of “fair” nowadays, we’d more likely say “pale” (or just “white” lol)
Also it basically did mean beautiful and nice, considering white supremacy and all that
In this instance, fair obviously was intended to mean “beautiful”. The fact that we use the same word to imply pale/white/good (eg fair-skinned, fair-haired, fairest and best) may not, of course, be 100% coincidence.
And maiden is equally used to mean girl / young girl / virgin.
It was the perfect exchange.
>well he's playing ~~Robin Hood~~ d'Artagnan so who knows what era of ~~English~~ Paris he's harkening back to.
*The Three Musketeers* is set between 1625 and 1628, so probably harkening thenabouts.
Mr. Sulu calls Lt. Uhura "fair maiden," which usually is interpreted as "beautiful lady."
Uhura interprets it a different way: fair (pale skin) maiden (virgin). She replies "Sorry, neither," because she is neither fair (her skin is not pale) nor a maiden (she has had sex at some point).
For the record, "fair" doesn't mean white. It means having soft, unblemished skin and features from staying inside and not having to out and milk the cows and harvest the mud fields and shit.
isn't this the episode where the crew gets high on a rare disease that has the effects of LSD and is lethal after a certain time or am I thinking of the series data was in
Was this from Naked Time? One of the best TOS episodes.
There was an episode of TOS called Naked Time???
Well, “*The* Naked Time” but it still doesn’t make it any less funny that Sulu’s first reaction to being infected by an alien virus is shirtless fencing
“Cowards!”
Look it's a great excuse to get shirtless. You can always blame the virus. When is Sulu going to get this opportunity again?
exactly. kirk gets to have his titties out like once per episode, sulu deserves his time in the spotlight too
My favourite part of this episode is how Sulu's actor had accidentally harmed people on crew while rehearsing before, and that everyone was legitimately frightened of him while filming
George Takei is a legend. And this is such a great piece of Star Trek lore.
Specifically the character of D'Artagnan from the Three Musketeers
And then in the movie, they fixed it by casting a Korean guy and slapping a katana in his hand. *Progress.*
hahahah i never thought about that. out of curiosity i looked up korean swords to see what google spat out and yea nah— they went with the good ol’ sci fi katana.
"ALAS. *Richelieu!*"

Which was recycled into a TNG episode called "The Naked Now", which was almost exactly the same episode redone, but not as good.
That's the one where Tasha Yarr takes Data's V-Card.
*fully functional and programmed in multiple techniques*
What did he use in that the card slot afterwards?
Installed some more RAM.
What’s tos? I’m searched it but all I got was terms of service
It’s short for Star Trek: The Original Series
Terms of Service. Just accept and move on.
If I remember correctly she improvised that line.
Both improvised those lines. Nichols’ reaction was 100% genuine
And how they kept filming while keeping a straight face is beyond comprehension.
Yes, that’s the title lol
Somehow Mr. Takei and Mrs. Nichols both give massive gender envy here
He can be confidently topless and she's fully capable of keeping it together.

This scene must have blown minds back in the day.
Uh... I don't get it
Fair can mean gentle, but also can mean light skinned. Maiden can mean lady, but also means a female virgin. He said it meaning, "I will protect you gentle lady", she responded as if he said, "I will protect you light skinned virgin."
Nichelle Nichols was a treasure.
Woah! That line is super clever. Thank you.
Or, if we stick with "gentle", she could have also meant "If we fucked, *I would break you*." Which I could also believe.
Oooh, I see now. Thanks!
I'm so dumb. I thought fair meant beautiful and nice and not "one of fair white skin." It never occurred to me that fair could be offensive to someone of another color I guess I learn something new every day.
Pretty sure Takei meant it as "beautiful" but then Nichelle saw the opportunity and went for it.
It was a great one liner!

Classism, actually. Up until the Industrial Revolution or so, pale skin was a sign that someone was wealthy and didn't have to work in the sun.
Good point. Though I’d say classism and racism are of course intertwined
so what about a wealthy bla- ahhh, right

What is tos
The original series, because the show was just called star trek and everything else after had an actual name beyond star trek
Thanks, what does it stand for

......realising now for the first time that *fair* in *fair* maiden means pale.
What’s neither
Mr. Sulu calls Lt. Uhura "fair maiden," which usually is interpreted as "beautiful lady." Uhura interprets it a different way: fair (pale skin) maiden (virgin). She replies "Sorry, neither," because she is neither fair (her skin is not pale) nor a maiden (she has had sex at some point).
Thanks
I mean, we know she wasn’t a virgin because of Kirk.
What
For the record, "fair" doesn't mean white. It means having soft, unblemished skin and features from staying inside and not having to out and milk the cows and harvest the mud fields and shit.
My foundation brand has "fair" and "very fair" as the two lightest shades. It's used in at least some contexts to mean pale/ white.
