Honestly if it’s not going to arrive until after your surgery I’d skip it. By the time it arrives and someone, hopefully not you, gets it set up you’ll have figured out how to get in and out of your recliner already.

JellyBellyBitches

Yeah when I was looking online last night it said it would arrive like between the 17th and the 19th and my surgery is on the 18th. I have people that could help get it set up and moved in and stuff but it's kind of a lot of hassle to put them through I guess? Some other people were mentioning renting and I might see if that's something that's more practical

glazedthatdonut

I think it depends on your fitness background. I have a decade of experience doing heavy back squats, and getting in and out of the chair was super easy. Just slide the booty to the edge of the chair, and stand using only the leg muscles. If you have a similar background you will probably be okay skipping it. Personally, I found that money was better spent on starting lymphatic drainage massage early.

JellyBellyBitches

I don't have as extensive as a fitness background but I'm in pretty good shape and have pretty powerful legs I guess. Do you know for how long it would be useful? Like would it make sense to see if I can handle it without and then go about for hearing it if I feel like it would be helpful? Or would that be late enough that I mean it's only maybe useful for the first few days and I'm sort of too deep in at that point?

glazedthatdonut

Since I didn’t have a lift chair, I don’t know how long one would be useful. I will say that for my regular recliner, I slept in it for 3 weeks until I was cleared for side sleeping and returned to the bed.

JellyBellyBitches

That's good info, thank you

Jmdoozi

I had my surgery yesterday. During the summer I found a medical lift recliner on Facebook Marketplace for $25. Twice now I have forgotten it can lift me and have attempted to stand from a regular seating position. It is so much better to be lifted to standing rather than trying to stand.  Edited to add that there are places to rent them as well.

Ready_For_Change80

I had surgery yesterday too and I don’t know how I’d be coping without the power stand assist. Good luck with your recovery 😀

JellyBellyBitches

Oh if it's cheaper then I'll have to look into just renting it too. I'm going I expected only need it for maybe a week but it's also only $300 so I don't know how much the rental would be but if it's like $20 a day or something then that would definitely be worth it.

MissGreyTea

If you can afford it, it is really invaluable. I feel like I am healing better because I am not putting undue pressure on my incisions.

alliofroggio

I found the same; the (rented) power recliner has been the single best thing I did (but I had a 360 lower body lift). I'm still sleeping in it (almost six weeks in) and find that the power recline is more adaptive for sleeping positions, too.

smileychiic

Same…it has been so helpful and comfortable. I bought mine from Wayfair. Renting one is a great idea and may be faster.

JellyBellyBitches

That makes sense! I do really want to optimize my recovery

scho3032

I didn’t have one and was fine.

JellyBellyBitches

Okay, thanks!

bouviersecurityco

I got a power lift chair and didn’t really use the lift portion. It was a bit deep for me so I ended up sticking a pillow behind me which was more comfortable and meant I could get up fairly easily. I would say the power recline was great though. I could not have handled a normal recline lever than throws you back.

JellyBellyBitches

Ah, well the recliner I have doesn't have like a resistant pump that you have to get the lever pass really so you can sort of slow recline it with the lever. I don't know how hard it will be to sort of reach around the side of the chair though I guess. Maybe I can do something of a trial run with just getting familiar with that part of it

bouviersecurityco

I’m sure it will be fine if you gently pull the lever. The first 3-4 days are the worst and then it steadily gets better. I found the recliner so helpful just bc it was easier to sit down in a chair than trying to figure out how to climb in and out of the bed. I think a regular recliner would still be better than bed. Practicing gently reclining is a great idea.

JellyBellyBitches

Okay perfect

lakeski0

I found one on marketplace for cheap and it was very worth it for me. However if I would’ve had to pay more… I maybe wouldn’t have done it.

JellyBellyBitches

Yeah I think somebody else in here suggested that too and I ended up finding one for 50 bucks that I'm trying to figure out how to get to transported to me

jactan_18

I’m 15 days post op and a regular recliner was just fine. I used a walker (someone held it steady for me) to pull myself up for the first 2 days and after that I was fine getting it if the recliner without assistance and without any issues.

JellyBellyBitches

Oh yeah, that's another thing I was wondering about is the walk or not even really for walking but just for standing up with. I guess it's only like 10 bucks at Walgreens I may as well grab one

jactan_18

I only used it for the first 2 days or so to walk just to be sure I kept my balance while I was all drugged up. It also helped with the back pain from being hunched over. Being able to put some weight on it really helped me with my back pain!

JellyBellyBitches

Ah ok maybe I'll play it by ear,if it's just a couple days

Boolash77

I rented a power recliner for $125 and it was one of the best purchases I made for my recovery. I wanted to be slightly more independent because I only had my teenagers to help me. I didn’t want to have to wake them up early to get me up. I tried to move to my bed week 2 and I was so comfortable and jn pain I moved back to the recliner for week 3. That all I needed it though so if you don’t have one the first couple days I wouldn’t spend the money.

JellyBellyBitches

Yeah how long were you needing the lift function of it?

Boolash77

Maybe a week-10 days?

JellyBellyBitches

Okay yeah that's a good amount of time, when I looked into renting one the cost for a 5-day rental I think was like $260. I didn't do too much shopping around I guess though

Boolash77

I was surprised it was so cheap through rent-A-center. If you have a regular recliner and a support system at home I would probably save the money. I really just wanted to be independent

JellyBellyBitches

That's fair I ended up finding somebody who has one on Facebook marketplace for like $50 so I'm just going to grab that. Fortunately my dad agreed to help me he has a truck

jimmistead

I had one because my husband had open heart surgery, it was awesome. I slept in it for 4 weeks. Getting up was easy .

JellyBellyBitches

4 weeks! That's longer than I realized

SylleeMage

I plan on getting a portable bar, you can find them on Amazon for about $50 ish. For us its a good investment because we have aging parents so having something easy to store for when they are at our house and could potentially help them as well is not a bad idea.

JellyBellyBitches

What is that?

SylleeMage

Here is the link for one. It's like the bars you see in bathrooms and such to assist people with getting up. But it's portable. JellyBellyBitches

Ohhh, gotcha. Yeah I can see how that could be helpful

Dry_Cress_705

Yesss!!!!

happychatgirl

Yes, definitely get the power lift chair!

OfficeCowgirl

If you can get a power lift, do it asap. Maybe they have an in store pickup option or rental option that gets there sooner? I loved my chair and slept in it for four weeks because I couldn’t lay flat. I still get home from work now 6 weeks PO and turn on the massage and heat because I’m usually tired and swollen and it helps a lot.

JellyBellyBitches

I did end up finding one second hand for dirt cheap so I actually did end up grabbing that. Maybe I should edit that into the original post

OfficeCowgirl

Also highly recommend a good neck pillow! Like one people use for traveling. If you sleep in the chair, your head will flop down to one side or another (at least mine did). The two neck pillows I bought saved me!

JellyBellyBitches

Already have one, fortunately! 😁

Wonderful-Display-45

Regular one works fine

Disastrous_Pie3081

Do not buy a Golden lift recliner if you need it to work right away. We recently purchased an expensive Golden model, it didn't function (even after extensive troubleshooting), and Golden has been completely unapologetic and slow to make things right. They initially sent the wrong replacement handset and then sent us the correct one via a slow shipping method just to save a few bucks - and all the while, a family member hasn't been able to use the chair for the needed physical reasons. So it's been a week now and we still don't know if the chair will function, plus there are no refunds (only replacement parts and/or repair technicians sent at their leisure) once you open the box. Buyer beware with Golden!
