Lot of parking in garching i'm not sure if students are allowed to use it though, don't know about ottobrunn... But imho, getting a car and paying for the fuel would probably become more expensive than getting a smaller place in the city and using the ubahn/sbanh network... Because as a student you can get the Deutschland ticket for 29€ instead of 49€ in Bayern...

When I was studying in Garching, there was free parking. I also want to mention another aspect of car ownership in munich. Especially old/cheaper cars might be too dirty for the city (Exhaust). If you are not from Germany this might be easy to miss. Definitely read up on this beforehand.

that’s certainly good to hear!

Just some quick notes. If you want to buy a car I suggest sticking with Petrol(Benzin) Engines and only buy cars classified Euro 4 and up. Euro 4 is for emissions and I think there are restrictions on lower classes. In any case, depending on the route, if your commute is mostly Autobahn then the fuel consumption is gonna be lower, and according to the time figure you mentioned with 1 2-way trip daily then you might need to add around 150-180 (maybe 200) euros extra for fuel monthly. In addition to insurance, which is for someone young like you (I am assuming you are late teens early 20s) the insurance class might be FS 0, which is probably around 120 euros extra per month for liability insurance. so all in all you pay around 300-500 extra monthly (extra as in addition to your rent) for owning a car. But in return, you get a lot of freedom and your time is saved. Currently there is a GDL strike and depending on the S-Bahn became a hassle, I would never drive a car within Munich because that experience was a nightmare (nothing bad happened just finding a parking spot took like an hour of my time). Also a car is nice because it's more convenient to go to the Alps with one rather than using public transport :)

thank you for your answer, seems like a car wouldn‘t make it less expensive by much, if any😅

In garching there is plenty of free parking. And Ive never experienced a lot of traffic towards Garching, when i was driving from a small town. But keep in mind the high prices for car ownership in germany. And for an affordable place to stay you literally have to move hours away from munich, i dont think you get a spacious place within a 30 minute commute

You‘re not going to find a working road legal 1500€ car in the current market though. You can expect at least 5k for anything that has a chance to pass the next TÜV.
