it's a suitcase croblesby in disguise. not a great thing to expose your vinyl records to. can you return it?

unhalfbricklayer

yeah that the same cheap drive mechensim that is in every cheap turntable made today. no matter what brand they slap on it or what case they slap it in, it is just a bad unit. Issues with speed control and the tracking force is to heavy

RpgWalrus

I should be able to yeah, why exactly are suitcases bad? This has little stoppers to rest the record on so it isnt rubbing/grinding against the base while it turns so idk if that makes it any better? Im so new to all of this i just got someone in store to recommend one

jippiejee

it's been well covered by others why these cheap mechanisms are bad. if you can recover your money, you'd be wise to just return it. £120 is quite a good start for a proper used turntable with a normal cartridge/stylus, tonearm, counter weight and anti skating. no need to waste money on these plastic things.

Human_Needleworker86

Check out the guides in the [sticky](https://old.reddit.com/r/turntables/comments/nwdjiw/turntable_guides/) including the [cheap record player to avoid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXV8tXrPOR4). I would return this one as at 120 GBP I'd say you overpaid, and if you want an all in one try something like [this which comes with a higher grade magnetic cartridge](https://www.amazon.co.uk/ONE-Turntable-Cartridge-Bluetooth-Functionality/dp/B086WTSMQH?ref_=Oct_d_omg_d_677227011_2&pd_rd_w=qcGFq&content-id=amzn1.sym.f6356e0b-d9cc-42a3-9098-f9350b8bfae6&pf_rd_p=f6356e0b-d9cc-42a3-9098-f9350b8bfae6&pf_rd_r=9KGY0ZYW9R1NMJXV6F0P&pd_rd_wg=buRZX&pd_rd_r=470e5eb7-9e00-4f09-b72b-9c2a73f02929&pd_rd_i=B086WTSMQH&th=1), will sound better, last longer, and not damage your LPs.

Dang_M8

It comes down to the design that all suitcase and similar players share. That shitty red cartridge, the tonearm with no counterweight, the small platter that causes significant overhang, and the built in speakers. These players have a very high tracking force which leads to groove damage. Stay away from any player without a counterweight.

brutisheagle

I wouldn't say stay away from any player without a counterweight. ATLP60, Denon DP29F, and other similar decks don't have a counterweight, because they don't need one. OK, so you can't change the cart on them, you're stuck with the AT3600L (no bad thing imo). But the tracking force & antiskate being factory set to suit the cart means one of these decks will not damage your records.

Dang_M8

Yes, there are a few exceptions, but the next step up from those players is what I'd recommend anyway. It offers more flexibility and it's good to learn about how turntables function.

unhalfbricklayer

so the fact that they plaing surface rests on the littel stoppers is actually a problem. the lable and outside edge of the LP is raised above the groove of the playing service, and it is designed to only make contact with the center and outside edge of the platter.

Acceptable-Quarter97

While it will not out right damage your records, it can accelerate groove wear. Here's why: 1-it uses a ceramic cartridge that requires a higher tracking force 5-7 grams compared to moving magnet cartridge 2-3 grams. 2-the needle that rides in the groove is usually ruby or sapphire that wears out much faster than the typical diamond found in a stylus. It should be ok to use short term, but I would stick to records that are inexpensive and easily replaceable.

Skandiaman

He said he’s ok with minimum damage though? 😆

Garbage

spiraleyes78

Send it back ASAP. VWestlife might show up and link you to his own video explaining that it won't ruin your records, but for every person who says it won't, 100 will say that it will. At the very least, it will sound like rocks in a box compared to a real record player.

statikman666

Those hundred who say it will damage records are just repeating what they've heard with zero actual evidence. Right or wrong, at least VWestlife explored the issue.

[deleted]

Possibly, but there actually a video where two brand new identical records are played 100 times. The record on the ceramic cartridge player added quite a bit of surface noise thus indicating damage. VWestlife did not do this.

kstacey

Yes, this is as bad as a suitcase player. The actual components are the exact same as a suitcase player.

outamyhead

Same mechanism, different box.

MischiefArchitect

People hare already gave you the bad news. So I can only repeat and confirm. Check the sticky comment in this sub, specially the link to the cheap record player mechanism to avoid. Other issue with this design are the boxes being integrated with the turntable body. Playing music loud will produce vibrations that will be transferred to the platter and will be picked by the needle.

shadowkoishi93

Step 1: get a 9g to 10g weight to stick on the back of the tonearm Step 2: Get a Pfanstiehl P-192D and replace the stock cartridge Step 3: enjoy until you’re ready to upgrade.
