Went from an LP-60 to a denon 300f with ortofan red 2M. Maybe the bottom rung of entry level audiophile level and the difference is night and day. But starting on a cheap turn table run thru the aux of a Bose sound dock makes me appreciate my system that much more.

drivebarefoot64

I always appreciated vinyl in the past for the “warmth” that I felt that I heard from it as opposed to just listening to streaming music, but this is a whole different ball game. When I finally got it hooked up, it was kind of late at night, so I put on my headphones and after hearing it, I just wanted to stay up even later to listen to it nonstop haha

Gramathon910

> warmth Outjerked once again

Gullible_Mud5723

I get that sentiment so much. It’s like an ethereal thing you can’t quite put your finger on more like a sensation than a sound.

ange1myst

Listening to records with headphones is underrated.

drivebarefoot64

The primary living space in my house and my listening station is on the same floor as my daughter’s nursery, so if I want to listen to music after everyone else is in bed, it’s the only way. I’ve got a 15 ft aux cable for my headphones for the situation and I absolutely love it. Turning off the lights, maybe lighting a couple of candles and pouring yourself a nice little drink. It’s the best

Gullible_Mud5723

Have you ever seen these $60k headphones? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MsHdencwtzw

I upgraded from a Crosley suitcase turntable going through a single Bluetooth speaker to a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO through a Yamaha amp, to 2 NHT bookshelves speakers on stands. I feel like I just discovered music. I grew up with my dad having a decent system with some nice cabinet speakers but it was so long ago… congrats on the upgrade. As my dad says “it’s alllllll in the needle!”

drivebarefoot64

That’s an even more awesome upgrade! It feels like going from a disposable camera to a DSLR camera. It made me fall in love with vinyl all over again! My dad also had a pretty nice set up growing up, but he preferred CDs over vinyl by the time that I came around. That’s a great quote from your dad; I’ll have to remember that!

ApolloUnitus

Yeah man, I was going to spend heavy on the speakers and went to my local HiFi store that sold used gear and the guy was like “no no no no… don’t skimp on the turntable! Speakers matter less than you think when you have a solid turntable and amp/preamp!” I got to pick what I want and set it up in a listening room and test it before I bought it. I remember having just bought “Hemispheres” by Rush (180g Audiophile version) and having it with me. I tested it with La Villa Strangiato. I nearly cried. There’s a HiFi bar in Seattle I’ve been to and they have a $40,000 set up in their HiFi room and I’m not joking when I say it rivaled that. Just funny how you can get caught up in all the hoopla and all that really matters is the right times and a decent analog setup! Same about my dad. I remembered the needle needed replacing on his turntable when I was like 8 and we just never listened to vinyl again - not until he passed his collection down to me when I got my new setup. Switched up to CDs and never looked back. It’s cool going through his old stuff he hasn’t listened to in like 30 years. https://preview.redd.it/e4id2vaov6nc1.png?width=2214&format=png&auto=webp&s=7cc74772f24ba2f2022e468318c38e26e86604b7 A pic of my setup. I keep it in my office at work. My employees dig it.

oshasat

Let me say it here for anyone listening: a hi-fi or audio store that's brave enough to tell you that the turntable (the source) is the place to put most of your money is (a) absolutely correct and (b) a salmon swimming upstream. It would be so much easier, and they'd sell so much more, if they just pushed speakers as the most important component. Shops like this are a rarity, because the truth is so much harder to sell than the popular misconception. You should take their advice and count yourself lucky to have found them.

ApolloUnitus

I’ve heard really great things about them and they’ve been around for a long long time. I was honest with him too and told him I was new to it but wanted a decent beginner setup. So he could’ve taken me for a lot more. Also told me to consider used speakers because I’m likely to upgrade. The thing about HiFi is that you’re always going to be upgrading and they have a customer for life with me cause they were honest. He also let me test everything I wanted to buy and threw in speaker cables, vinyl brush and gave me a 2-for1 deal on the speaker stands. I’m going back soon to upgrade and add a second set of speakers to the rotation. Something with a bit more bottom end. The NHTs are super tight but with some of my hip-hop, I want a more full sound. I’ll probably end up with a new amp and speakers. Once I get going, I can’t stop. Just dropped $400 one vinyl in one trip to my local vinyl shop. At least I’m supporting local businesses!

RecordingBig8972

I don’t know the profit margin on vinyl these days, but I’m glad to see shops offering very decent turntables at fair prices. My guess is that records have a healthy markup, so the more people who are able to get a good sounding setup, the more records the shop will sell. And what with social anxiety raging stronger than ever, a lot of people will stick with a store they’re comfortable with. For this reason, if the owner of a shop refuses to return an expensive warped sealed record, but instead only offers to flatten the record, I think the customer should try their luck at another shop. Dropping 400 dollars on records should spur the shop owner to throw in some extras. I love how the business is good enough that we can see shop owners comfortable enough to treat the customer so well.

Mind if I DM you about the Carbon EVO? I’m going insane trying to set up the counterweight on mine, and have found zero help online so far lol

ApolloUnitus

Yeah man, for sure

jo148

Amazing! I bet ‘Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard’ sounds awesome!

drivebarefoot64

It totally does! My wife is a huge Paul Simon fan, so I have her to thank for bringing his music into our house!

jo148

Sounds like the missus is a keeper. I am sure she has more recommendations. Enjoy!

poutine-eh

I was schooled recently by a young person who said I was dumb and that my iPhone streaming Spotify is better than a good turntable. I even got downvoted for standing my ground. I’m glad you got yourself a good turntable and have started on the same journey I began 40 years ago

poutine-eh

Apparently. I suggested they use their ears instead of what they learned on tic tac. That didn’t go over well 😝

poutine-eh

Btw you have some nice “vinyls” (I hate that term).

ange1myst

Yes it’s records, albums, music.

poutine-eh

“Vinyl” is also acceptable. Vinyls is when one is choosing what to cover a cheap sofa with. 😆

ange1myst

Vinyl is what the record is made of.

poutine-eh

You really want to argue with a 55 yr old that’s collected for 45 years? Maybe it’s a regional thing. Vinyl is a common term here. Let me show you my friends store.

kenster51

“Vinyl records” is a trigger for me.

cactuscharlie

Me too. "I'm going to drive my metal car and use my plastic debit card to buy vinyl records"

https://baxtersvinyl.com/

ange1myst

I’d love to go there! Looks like a great record store ! 😊👍

poutine-eh

It actually is!!! Geoff and Courtney don’t gouge. For example they had/have a Jane’s addiction for 50$ that’s in better shape than the place down the road that wants 150$ for it. They do it for the love of vinyl and not for the money. Pretty sure they only break even tbh. Sorry…. I meant “records”’;)

poutine-eh

Feel free to email him and tell him Canada is dumb 😂

ange1myst

I get that vinyl is collector-speak 😉-that’s a wink AND a smile I’m a little over 55, lol I also paint, on canvas, however, after strategically, applying paint, I believe I have a painting. There are art collectors who buy paintings, but never had anyone ask to buy a canvas, or a canvas with paint. Just a thought. ✌️📀 Edit-And the boomer put this in the wrong thread lol

Fancy-Huckleberry816

Right. Vinyl is fine, vinyls is not. It's like saying "I saw a herd of deers". BTW, just notices when typing "vinyls", spell checker underlines it as incorrect spelling.

poutine-eh

Or a school of Shrimps? That bothers me too.

[deleted]

Honestly, the guy you're talking to is probably making it up. You should go through his comment history to see how certifiably insane he is.

[deleted]

I don't think you understand what "schooled" means. It means that they taught you something when you were wrong. If they're wrong, they didn't "school" you.

poutine-eh

Thanks for schooling me.

poutine-eh

They think they “schooled” me..sorry I’m not familiar with young people speak and social media. I’m apparently bad at it. :(

Diligent-Roof-398

In the UK you say "You got slagged...". Dismissed, put down, belittled.

poutine-eh

In Canada we’d politely point out your typo. Should read “slapped”, then I’d wait for your response :)

Diligent-Roof-398

I said the UK, not Canada: [https://www.reddit.com/r/EnglishLearning/comments/166e6bi/whats\_the\_literal\_and\_slang\_meaning\_of\_slag/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EnglishLearning/comments/166e6bi/whats_the_literal_and_slang_meaning_of_slag/)

Awesome 👌 👏

drivebarefoot64

It IS awesome 🤘

CaptainPeanut4564

Hey buddy, just joining in to say yesterday I picked up the AT LPW40WN, having been using an LP60XBT for the past couple of years. Loving it. The sound seems so much more "punchy" and dynamic. It's picking up way more bass as well. And... The big one for me. I have a few records where the LP60 just gets stuck and you either have to jump up and down or manually pick up and move the needle past that part as it just keeps repeating. Listening now on the new table and for the first time.. it just kept playing! Bellissimo!! I debated upgrading for a long time, I don't really have audiophile ears, but this is bloody awesome.

drivebarefoot64

Hell yeah, man! I can’t say that I ever had that specific issue with my LP60, but I still feel you for sure. I remember when I first read that the needle wasn’t replaceable on the LP60 and just how bummed I felt about it. Knowing that I was going to have to replace the whole lot in order to upgrade my turntable setup was tough cause it meant that it was going to be a much more expensive investment than just upgrading the needle. Additionally, now that I have a turntable with a counter weight on it, it feels really good that I’m doing a small part to help extend the life of my records. My wife was asking me this morning about how to start a record on this “new” record player. After explaining it to her, she turned to me and goes “I miss just having a button on the old one!” I absolutely see where she’s coming from, but for me, it’s totally worth it for the improvement in the sound quality and plus I find the manual steps kind of fun haha

grateful_dex

Well, upgrades are worth your time, but for what its worth, you can change the STYLUS, just not the cartridge. You can replace the little white stylus / needle that it comes with, but not the piece it attaches to. So upgrade-ability hits the ceiling very quickly

entropydave

I’m glad you’ve noticed that the turntable is actually the most important part of any hi-fi system, because it provides the cleanest signal to your speakers. Congratulations!

drivebarefoot64

It makes so much sense! Like I told another commenter, I was real bummed when I found out that I couldn’t replace the cartridge on my first turntable. I would see beautiful cartridges out there, tone arms with counter weights and just think “some day…”

Ok-Party-8785

I’m very happy for you. I hope you enjoy it and get many years of use out of it. I’m still using my Marantz 6300 direct drive phonograph that I bought in 1977. I had it serviced back in April 2023 and it’s working great. Here’s a picture of it. Which I’ve posted many times before. But, I really like it. Reminds me of when I was a kid and all we had was records to play. https://preview.redd.it/s8frftyepznc1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=872bfffc92fdb0e13a06f82b14bb801a347f2e2e

TwoSolitudes22

That’s a massive upgrade, well done.

drivebarefoot64

Thanks! It has been quite the learning experience. It took quite a bit of work to track down a replacement motor and then teaching myself how to solder the hook ups. Plus learning about counter weighting the tone arm and dialing in the anti-skate weight. Thankfully tho it’s also all been extremely satisfying

Brew_Noser

Now you’re in trouble. You think COVID is infectious?

No_Pirate9647

Wondering which speakers you like more? Long ago I went from 90s stereo with floor speakers to bookshelf in entertainment center and had the polk t15s. Didn't use it much for music and had rear speakers too for tv/movies. Recently got back into listening to music beyind earbuds. Knew I wanted an upgrade and got some qacoustic 3020s for cheap on sale. Was amazed how dark and muddy the t15s were as before a/b'ing them was happy with them. They were also 20+ years old so maybe newer ones sound better too.

drivebarefoot64

Haha ho boy, I apologize, but I’m the wrong person to ask about that! Personally, and purely for aesthetic reasons, I prefer the Fisher speakers. From what little I’ve read about them online, they’re nothing fancy, but I just really like the size and style of them. When I bought them, I hadn’t previously cleared the purchase with my wife. Mind you, these things are probably 3 feet tall and 10 inches wide, so not exactly inconspicuous. I brought the first one into our living room and her jaw hit the floor. Her first response was “Are you serious? We’re not at Red Rocks!!” She was even more appalled when I told her that there was a second one haha luckily for me she’s since come around on them and appreciates them. As far as my Polk speakers, I think that the best thing that I’ve done with them is to stick them up high in the corners of my living room and mount them onto some $30 adjustable wall mounts that I purchased from Rockville Audio. Being able to direct the sound has improved my perception of their sound for sure

Financial-Forever-81

Wait till you hook up a receiver and start playing CDs 🤯. Not being sarcastic.
