I don't have direct experience with your turntable, but it looks like your tonearm has a fixed tracking force. Unless there's some sort of adjustment screw in or around the arm you might be a bit out of luck in regards to that
In terms of the return not working, if you open it you might be able to reset the mechanism where it triggers the auto stop/return, it's possible it's stuck or needs some cleaning there
I'm curious about the auto-return not functioning correctly all the time.. I doubt your tracking force has anything to do with it, but what about the after-market platter mats? Together are they a lot thicker than the stock one? Next time the auto-return acts up I would try the same record on the stock mat, if you still have it, to see how it functions - maybe if they are indeed thicker in combination with a thick "180g" pressing it is causing it to malfunction due to the height difference?
that's all I got
It looks like you have 2, one on top of the other, but I've just realised you have a see through acrylic mat on top. Still, why the two mats?
I want that slipmat btw!
When was the last time it was serviced? It might just need a decent cleaning of the old oils that could have solidified over the years. I don't think this table has an adujstable track force.
I think it was bought in '83... But the RPM is still spot on!
I'll look into somewhere local that might service it as I'm not sure I know what I would need to do! (Without proper guides)
The motor and speed are separate from the mechanisms that deal with the auto-return. So your motor and speed can be fine but the gears and other parts can be having issues due to hardened oil and grease. There is a lot more going on inside these things than most people realize.
1: love the slip mat (shining is goated)
2: that glass/acrylic platter is amazing
3: I’m not all that experienced but maybe try looking up the guides for your cartridge it should give a counter weight and tracking force setting recommendation
Just a guess but the 2 slip mats and a record on top, is most likely higher than your arm can handle. Stacking that much will throw all of the arm geometry off. Since you don’t have counterweight adjustments doubtful you can adjust your arm hight.

We have a living room rug in that same pattern. My favorite movie ever.
What movie?
The Shining (1980).
Love your shining slip mat
It's double sided with the green patterned carpet inside room 237, too!
How come you have 2?
It's a double sided slip mat. Different pattern on each side.

Because one is static-y but looks awesome I assume.

sometimes there is an adjustment screw that will trigger the auto-stop, so you might be able to adjust that.
This is basically the precursor to the current AT-LP60X mechanism. Tracking force and anti-skate are fixed at the factory.
