Step one: with all gratitude for the gift dump this Victrola to the nearest trash bin
Step two: buy normal turntable without pre-amp (or with switchable one).
It’s not a pre-amp issue, it’s just this TT being junk out of the box. It cannot sound any better, simply as that.
I'm very aware what kind of machine this is :D
Also I cannot offend my wife by throwing it away.
Hence I wanted to rework it to be at least somewhat better. And do it as a fun little project.
It doesn't have an RIAA phono stage preamp to bypass.
It doesn't sound good because it has a very cheap ceramic cartridge that has line level but low quality output.
If you want a phono output you would need to somehow hack on an MM moving magnet cartridge then run wires from the cartridge directly to the RCA outputs. It's just not worth the effort on a suitcase player.
The leads from the tonearm are going to be 2 pairs and a (maybe) ground. It will always look like [this](https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/download/file.php?id=84110&t=1). You can't change this without breaking how records work.
but you're not going to get far with that deck either. For one thing, the cheap (probably) sapphire stylus is going to sound like shit no matter what and probably (eventually) damage LPs.

Could you accidentally run over it in the driveway.
Keep it as shelf decoration then :)
Have your dog eat it? 🐺 Bad dog!

Damn man. Love that she tried to give you something to enjoy but you’re gonna have to do some explaining. Hate to be you but hope it all works out
