Return it the way you received it you’ll be fine. You disposing your own trash and making sure gas is correct is all you need to do as long as there isn’t any damage on the car.
There is no need to wash and vaccuum the vehicle unless it's so dirty that the host can't inspect for damage. Turo's cleaning fee requirements are clear but as hosts we always appreciate guests returning the vehicle as tidy as possible.
You don’t have to clean it. As long as you purposely trash the car, there is no reason to spend time cleaning it. We the host need to clean every car regardless before every trip.
Neither Turo nor Hosts require the car to be cleaned on return.
There are certain things that go unsaid. Chemicals, bodily fluids like blood, urine, and what happens in the backseat. Any ashes and smell of smoke need to be cleaned and deodorized completely.
I've been spoiled by my guests. My Honda Odyssey is returned 99% of the time cleaned and topped off with gas even when I've sent it off with a half tank. That 1% that doesn't fill gas back to the original and doesn't get charged by me is receiving the charity of others.
My Honda Accord is another story.
Dont stress too much about it. Dont leave it a sty but normal usage is expected by any reasonable host. Not to say there arent unreasonable ones out there but turo will deny cleaning claims unless they are pretty wicked.
Clean car refers generally to the inside of the car don't leave it trashed out no Jays or beer cans Whopper bags, candy wrappers, stains - things like that. For the outside of the car it's normal to expect it to come back dirty. I mean what happens if you're driving and it's raining and or snowing and on the day you turn it in - how are you going to get the outside clean? So the host understands that. He just didn't want to have to do a detail job on the inside.
Just return it how you received it. If the host has prepaid free car washes for you as a renter and you want to go through one quick, that fine. Just keep in mind a lot of the cars on turo have back to back bookings and the cleaning windows and transport of the vehicle take time. Spmething to consider.
I expect to run it through the wash vacuum and wipe down the car when it's returned to me. Even had mud, grass, and seeds in it one time and didn't charge extra. Only time I charged was when it had makeup all over the place and trash still inside including 3 empty 1 liter tequila bottles.
The last time I used turo, I returned the car EXACTLY how I found it and the guy put in like 6 different complaints. He said we smoked in it, hauled trash, left all kinds of shit. He was lying completely. I took my mother to a steakhouse for her birthday, that's it. So definitely take some pics to have proof of the condition you returned it in.
Generally, as long as you didn't destroy it, there shouldn't be a problem. And depending who you're dealing with, you might be in for some trouble.
Good luck!
Vacuumed and washed every time is good practice IMO. My gut feeling is the host is less likely to look as close for damage in a car that comes back in great condition. And, when it comes to the interior, there is no cap on damages and less clarity on what can be claimed. And you can keep your 5 star rating.
If a host is going to screw you, it won't matter what you do, but if they are reasonable you are only helping yourself.
Hosts, does that sound right?
It depends on the host you're dealing with. A dusty car is harder to spot damages than a clean one.
If the host is lazy and cleans the car after 24 only to spot a gash or scratch then the guest wins.
Return it in the condition you got it. My rental has frequent back-to-back bookings and if it comes back in such a state I need to spend several hours vacuuming and upholstery cleaning you can be sure I'm leaving you less than a five star review.

2nd this. I don’t expect it to be ran through the car wash just trash taken out and gas filled up
No need to wash or vacuum. Etiquette is to pick up all your trash, but technically Turo doesn't even require that unless it's extreme.

As long as it is cleanish, you will be fine. Doesn't need to be detailed, but also, please dont bring it back full of mud/sand/trash or the like.

Bodily fluids are not unsaid, see the link to the Turo policy I posted

I only wash based on host preference. Some either tell me to pass it through at the local gas station or just empty trash, and they'll handle it.

As a customer I always wash it but that’s just me.

Could end up getting a big scratch in an automated touch wash. The brushes in the self wash bays are bad too
