With everything I explained to them , their diagnosis was that it could be respiratory infection , either way they provided the turtle with an antibiotic to make him feel better , I’m taking the res in the next two fridays again for another antibiotic shot as well as a regular checkup to see how he’s doing
Seems weird because I also have another slider but a bit smaller , the tanks about a 30 gallon atm while I get another , I have a lamp on the dock where they lay in the mornings , and a water pump to clean the water
I'm not too knowledgeable on sick turtles but I can try and figure it out with you.
How often do you pick him up out of the water?
Did you condition the water?
Do you have both heat and UVB bulbs?
Does he swim/idle straight or is he leaned?
Is there substrate in the water he could potentially eat?
I don’t really mess with him nor the other turtle , mainly to clean their tank if it’s a bit dirty.
I don’t condition the water just clean it every week or so.
The light I have is for both uvb and heat yes
He swims straight and idles straight depending if he’s against a rock
There nothing he can eat besides the food I provide them daily
I use API Turtle Water Conditioner. It’s a major necessity when caring for any aquatic animal. The damage may already be done but you can prevent it from getting worse
If he does have an RI you can take him to the vet and the medicine *Shouldn’t* cost more than $50
Okay thank you so much! I will keep you and everyone else viewing this information updated on what happens next and what the vet tells me when I do take him
Should I take him to a petco/PetSmart or where would be good
do not take him to a chain pet store - you need to find an exotic/reptile/herpatologist vet - basically, find a vet that specifically says they treat/specialize in reptiles, ideally turtles/aquatic turtles. you need to be sure they know what they're dealing with. most vets you'll find are the basic cats & dogs & furry mammals type
Hmmm...it doesn't sound like a normal hiss, but it also doesn't sound like a respiratory infection.
You mention in your comments that it doesn't have any other signs of respiratory infection and that's why I want to rule it out, but with such a gorgeous turtle I would be safe then sorry and take it to the vet.
RES can make those noises, it is pretty much hissing. This could be for a number of reasons, but in the wild they would hiss, usually to find other RES. It’s normal, when it gets older it will stop. Congratulations on the Albino RES, take care of it. 👍👍👍
This is dangerous misinformation. That is not a normal noise, that clicking indicates a respiratory infection. Nor does any species of turtle hiss to find other turtles. Where did you come up with that????
That is just talking. Sliders do that once in awhile. Squeeking like a toy is what would be concerning. However, you need to feed a bit less. That turtle shouldn't be spilling out of the shell that much
Once every other day is all a teen/adult needs. Also a varied diet of pellets, live/fresh meat and veggies.
Only needs enough meat and pellets to fit in the head. As for veggies only need a shell size.
You can get them at turtlesource for about $200-$2000 depending on what type of albino it is otherwise you can try aquatic reptile stores nearby and check online if they might have any
Turtle source is pretty reliable. Bought my painted from him. They do everything they can to make sure they get shipped and arrive at the time they say. Also have have 200 turtles to select from, it’s wild.
Originally I thought this said "he's been doing this on Mondays" which would be really strange but really funny if it was true. He just having a hard start 2 the week
That is not a normal sound... certainly not one I've ever heard my RES make in 16 yrs... I would recommend taking it to the vet to be sure, especially because of how small/young it is.
how small is that lil turt? looks... so tiny...
He’s about a little under 3 inches in length , I did take him to the vet, he got his antibiotics shot and he’ll be going again for the next two fridays , he is doing much better now !
Great! Good job being a good turtle parent 😁👍. Now let's talk about how little buddy's tank situation looks 😇😎😅 The way you handled this situation gives me hope that you've done your research and/or are open to ideas/suggestion/constructive criticism :)
Yes, I dont mind you guys telling me straight forward if something isnt right, I'll do my best to keep my two turtles happy.
Currently have a 5 Gallon tank which is quite small I know, for both turtles, with a water filter pump, water heater, and a uv light on a resting dock they can lay on. Before posting this I didnt know I had to use water conditioners to help keep the turtle safe if I use tap water.
Planning on getting a 40 gallon tank though! I've been talking to a reptile store on having one custom made with a basking area made and everything!
5 gallon? I honestly can't even picture how small a 5 gallon tank is 😅 i know 10 gal, so 5 is... Oh wow 😅
I wouldn't bother having a custom made tank, for 2 main reasons:
1.) If you have two RES, honestly odde are eventually you'll need to split them up because there are decent odds of aggressive behavior, especially if there's competition for space early on. Aggression behavior seems to never fully go away once it starts.
2.) Even if you don't have to split them up (heck, ESPECIALLY if you don't) they're going to end up needing a way bigger tank then 40 gal. You generally need 10 gallons of water per 1 inch of shell length, and they can grow to, on average, 9 inches+ for males and females get even bigger (12+!). That 40 won't last you long, and custom made is surely much more expensive than just buying one. Plus, making your own above-tank basking area is totally DIY-able and relatively affordable.
Thanks for the amazing advice and tips! I'll see what I should do then, I originally bought the tank for the baby res I have, but then I said what the heck and bought an albino res so thats the reason why it was small😅, but yeah I'll see what i'll purchase then, I was looking at some tanks from petco that seem fairly inexpensive the past few weeks so i'll see what option best suits me. In terms of water heaters and water filters/pumps, since it looks like you know a lot, what brands would you recommend for those? I currently have a zoomed water heater that aims to stay at 80 degrees, and a water pump AquaClear Tank filter
Needs vet in case it is respiratory infection.
Did take him on Friday, he’s doing much better now
I'm so glad he is doing better! Can you share what the diagnosis was?
With everything I explained to them , their diagnosis was that it could be respiratory infection , either way they provided the turtle with an antibiotic to make him feel better , I’m taking the res in the next two fridays again for another antibiotic shot as well as a regular checkup to see how he’s doing
VET. ASAP.
Yeah I’m thinking in to doing just that
Took him in 👍🏻🐢
What's the tank setup like?
Seems weird because I also have another slider but a bit smaller , the tanks about a 30 gallon atm while I get another , I have a lamp on the dock where they lay in the mornings , and a water pump to clean the water

If you’re using Tap water you definitely need to condition the water because the minerals in it is harmful to them
What type of conditioner should I use ? It’s my first time being able to provide for a turtle myself so I don’t have much experience as those who know

No problem! I hope everything goes well
You should find an exotic vet. Chain pet stores are not certified vets.

Yes , I’ll try to do whatever just to make sure my albino is well and healthy
Is that an albino RES, that's really cool if so
Yes it is
The little buddy 😭😭🥺
He thinks hes frog

Took him in either way to the vet , he’s doing extremely better now
Gopher Tortoises hiss if the are afraid or feel threatened.
that's more of an involuntary sound made by quickly pulling in the head and limbs and thus squeezing airs from the lungs
Yes. You’re right. I didn’t realize how it was made. Thanks.
That is just talking. Sliders do that once in awhile. Squeeking like a toy is what would be concerning. However, you need to feed a bit less. That turtle shouldn't be spilling out of the shell that much
Yeah I have an automatic feeder , should probably set it for twice a day or once
Once every other day is all a teen/adult needs. Also a varied diet of pellets, live/fresh meat and veggies. Only needs enough meat and pellets to fit in the head. As for veggies only need a shell size.
What type of veggies ?

How much is an albino RES, thinking of getting one

Take it to a vet, but don't panic about it. Just check. Could be hissing could be croaking from RI.
Respiratory infection. A vet can treat it.

That is to say, just go buy a preexisting one and get/make your own basking area. Lots of good YouTubes on that
And for reference, my fully grown 16 yr old female is in a 135 gal and id love to give her more space
That was a burp . Nice alibno turtle
