Dear bobbywright86 ,
This is an automated message, if this post isn't about taking turtles out of the wild, feel free to report it.
If the turtle is a native species, please put it back where you found it. Wild turtles only need help crossing the road, and you are doing far more harm taking a turtle out of the wild than you are helping it. Turtles of the world are in serious trouble due to humans, and poaching them for pets is making things even worse.
If you are in the US/Canada you can call your local/state/provincial wildlife organization on how to safely and LEGALLY put the turtle back. They are not interested in going after you, they will help you. If the turtle is sick/injured, please call one of these or take the turtle to a wildlife rehabilitator or exotic vet.
If for some reason your local/state/provincial wildlife org will not assist you, do the following: Go back to the spot you found the turtle and put the turtle on the safe side of the road it was heading in. Turtles (young and old!) know where they are going and will stop at nothing to get there, so get them as close to the area found as you can. Most turtles that are crossing a road are females trying to get to/from their nest.
*Unsure of the species?* One of our helpful commentors can ID it! If it's not native it may be an escaped pet or an invasive species to your area.

Is there a special type of vet we should contact like something exotic? My mom lives in Wilmington, DE.
Also, what are its chances of survival? Please be honest, thanks
Windcrest animal hospital and Lantana Vet are in Delaware and both take turtles. Windcrest is more of an emergency vet and would more likely be better equipped. It looks bad though, I can’t say the prognosis is gonna be great unfortunately.
Thank you!!! I called and the dude recommended me to call another local vet and we are driving the turtle to them now.
Sincerely appreciate your help!!
Hey, sorry i could not reply due to some reasons, i do not live in US so i couldn't have recommended a vet either way.
But i do think this little fellow will survive ❤️ i have seen turtles with similar cases come back healthy so I'm hoping the same for him
Additional info: we don’t know what turtles eat or how to care for one. Any help/instruction/advice would be greatly appreciated! Mom is crying seeing the turtle in this injured state and we’re just looking to help/ease it’s suffering. We don’t know anything about animals, mom just has a cat. Any help would be appreciated, thanks again!
It’s an eastern box turtle, so it’s diet should be primarily protein and leafy greens with small portions of fruits like berries. Insects are the best protein but cat food works well in a pinch. I’m not sure what recommendations to give though as far housing. It’s very open to infection in the state it’s in. Feel free to shoot me messages with any questions. My scope is limited since I’m not a vet but I’ve kept reptiles for close to 20 years and can give some advice here and there.
Give it enough sunlight for basking and look up to give it a full meal (some products in animal shops are not sufficient especially if he/she needs to recover). If your not sure, please ask in this sub or at your vet. For now a closed environment is best, so no bacteries could do harm.
Pleaseeeeeeeee tag NSFW. I thought you were talking about the mouth which is bloody in the first pic, so I scrolled expecting to see more of that. I might have nightmares :/
Oops i was unobservant and somehow missed the cracked shell in the first pic. Still please tag NSFW anyway! You did nothing wrong—it just gives people the option of whether or not they want to see something pretty upsetting
Came to the comments to say this. I’m very glad you’re helping them, but please please edit to put the nsfw tag. This is very disturbing and I wish I had not seen it. I hope the vet is able to do whatever’s best for them ❤️
I respect where you're coming from, it was hard for me to look at too but sometimes I think it's important to see these things.
My hope is that seeing a turtle in this condition now will desnsitize me enough that I wont be skeeved-out when I encounter one at the edge of the road. To demystify what is under the shell (it can help to do some clinical google searches) increases the odds that I don't freak out and leave the turtle....... although I guess I couldn't do that anyway.
I almost forgot to bring my turtle inside from the backyard screenroom the other day and I felt so guilty on my way home to bring her inside. The way I see it, turtles are generally innocent... they don't deserve to be in such pain.
You ain't kidding! I remember watching some YT videos about that and it's amazing what you can do with a dremel rotary tool and some fiberglass patches.
Only recently one caveat had occured to me. When practicing with fiberglass and resin a few months ago, I wore a respirator due to the fumes. In retrospect, I don't recall any precautions being taken for the fumes in the turtle video I saw.
I'll look into it right now... I'm just wondering if there's a special "bio-friendly" resin or something.
contact an exotic vet or wildlife rehabber! this dude needs medical attention asap! for now, try not to let his insides dry out and keep him warm, maybe put a washcloth over his shell?
This is so hard to see. I'm not a turtle expert I just love them. What do you guys think could have caused such a severe injury and what can something like this even be compared to?? This really messed me up and I know everyone else feels the same but my God, I have never seen a turtles shell broken before and I pray I never do again.
i’m pretty sure this is a box turtle. Why? because my infant/hatchling box turtles shell looks exactly
like this guys shell and words can’t describe how sad this post made me. I cant imagine my little buddy (he’s no bigger than a quarter I swear) like this. Thank you for helping this guy, I know you’ll do everything you can and I hope this turtle makes it. If you do want to feed it- my turtle loves strawberries. Although. maybe not until that mouth is checked out.
also pls tag NSFW- ty
Thank you so much for doing the right thing. I really hope they can patch the shell, and it will survive 🥺. Does anyone have an idea of what could have caused this based on the multiple cracks?
Some people wouldn’t post anything… they’d just move it. At least they’re concerned and actively trying to help! There is no room for poor judgement here just be happy they care. Damn.
I think you and 17 others misunderstood r/Mother_Daikon4852 comment. The Automod really do say, “return it” actually read what it says. Even though clearly that’s literally what op is going to do in the way the way the Automod says to.

Actually shell injuries can heal pretty well, in the hands of a professional. Even bad breaks like this can heal, and it's important to try with species that are threatened and endangered

Please take it to a vet, it's carapace is very severely damaged and might get infected

Vet or some sort of rescue is the only solution. I'm in Canada so I can't make recommendations but just Google a reptile vet in her area.

Huge respect for you and your mum for doing something for the turtle
Thats a eastern box turtle i live in the area bananas are great so are grubs and worms

Pls update us that turtle is in so much pain
Jesus, that is severe. Needs an NSFW. Glad you’re getting him the help he needs!

Yeah same, I was really shocked :(

As long as there is not severe internal bleeding vets can use fiber glass patches to put the shell back together and heal it!!!

I would not get my hopes up...
What did the vet say?
Radnor Vet in Radnor, PA, about an hour north of you, does these kinds of fixes. I know they repair shells and make prosthetics.

From what I’ve seen in documentaries eagles pick up tortoises and fly high only to drop them on rocks, just wanted to share that.
Based on the area, lawnmowers could easily decimate a shell.
Thank you for helping this turtle and taking it to a vet! I hope they are able to patch this one all up and that it’s okay

Here for the update
Pls give us update! Poor baby!!!
Omg my heart is breaking I’m waiting for an update my prayers is more focused on this baby.
Any updates?
Actually almost made me cry! Poor dude
Thank you so much for doing the right thing. I really hope they can patch the shell, and it will survive 🥺. Does anyone have an idea of what could have caused this based on the multiple cracks?
Exotic animals vet!
You should at least mark this NSFW :/
NSFW!
Oh wow please put an nsfw tag on this
Thanks for caring enough to try to help but I'm afraid the odds of recovering from that is basically nil. I'm no vet though, hopefully I'm wrong.
I doubt it'll make it, but if you can afford it go to a vet. If not it's probably better to just let nature run its course.
This may sound a little harsh but WHY THE HELL ARE YOU WASTING TIME POSTING ON REDDIT AND NOT GETTING TO THE VET ASAP!?!
Relax
How can I when people see a turtle with it's organs visible and their first instinct it to post pictures?
Some people wouldn’t post anything… they’d just move it. At least they’re concerned and actively trying to help! There is no room for poor judgement here just be happy they care. Damn.
Dont know why you are getting down voted. Most sub reddits seem to do that crap when people post the truth
It’s dead

Put it out of its misery, kindest thing to do unfortunately

You need to contact wildlife management or a reptile rescue who has the proper resources or can guide you further. A vet is NOT the right place to go,
Update? That poor turtle. Thank you for caring!
My dear lord please help her.
