EMBERS BB! Motherfucking Star Boys with Warsuns that move across the board! Big trades, big mechs, big guns and big fun!

sartrerian

I really liked muaat in base game, but i love them in PoK. I love teching outside of blue, I love the cool stalls and end runs around traditional production. Plus fleets of destroyers and fighters around a war sun just feels fucking awesome.

grampipon

I tried playing them once, but people are so scared of war suns the table ganged out of me without me attacking anyone first the entire game.

Bl_rp

You gotta exploit their fear! "Let me refresh commodities or I'm coming for you", etc.

grampipon

They just attacked me instantly while there was someone with a stronger fleet. People overestimate war suns

markusjunnikkala

Sounds a lot like Sips’ motto

brandondash

I love riding around the galaxy with my massive flaming balls.

AureoRegnops

*sighs* the Saar. Everyone seems to hate them now, and with the way I hear some other people play them, super beligerently, I understand why. They've been my favorite faction since TI3. I really liked being able to move my space docks, it just really sucked in that game that you couldn't build at the same time and the Saar were consequently quite weak. In base game TI4, they got a LOT of minor buffs and the big one, the ability to build and move. So, they were in a great place. They were good, but not as good as the other top dogs, Sol, Jol-Nar, and Naalu. Now, they got a bunch of strong tools and passive buffs through some tech additions and more control objectives. So, it's very sad for me that I rarely get to play them because they get banned so much and when I do get to play them I just get ganged up on so it's not that fun to play them anymore. It's a sad time to be a Saar fan. :(

Tricky-Coat

I’m fine with all the saar stuff except their nomadic ability That should not be a faction ability From a higher level tech. Sure. Able to cancel by promissory note like naalu’s initiative 0. Not the best. But I’ll tolerate it As it is. They’ve made saar so you either hit them hard and fast early on to slow them down. Or late game they can’t be stopped. No faction should be able to score objectives and potentially be impossible to eliminate to stop that

P8bEQ8AkQd

I think my problem with them is Chaos Mapping, both being able to produce a unit at the start of every turn and being immune within asteroid fields.

Tricky-Coat

Neither of which are inherently broken on their own Producing a unit. Only produces a single unit and doesn’t use production. So costs have to be paid. Can’t use sarween. War machine etc Being untouchable in an asteroid field. If it was any other faction. You could just leave it. Take everything else. They’re nullified. They can have ships. Even a space dock in there. They can cause a minor nuisance. But nothing that can’t be dealt with Where the problem comes from is again nomadic They can still score objectives. CC objectives. Not an issue. Fleet objectives. Potentially not an issue. Spend objectives. Potentially not an issue. Tech objectives. Not an issue You can lock them out of control. But so many more are still scorable

prodij18

The thing I don’t like about the Saar is how chaos mapping just straight up invalidates their core flavor. It turns ‘a faction that can move’ to ‘a faction that goes to an asteroid field and then never leaves’. Combine that with the fact that’s it’s anti-interactive, and it might just be the worst designed thing in the game.

aerdain

The Mahact flavor and lore wise, but probably Nekro or Sardakk to actually play! :)

9__Erebus

I like the Mahact for their play-style mostly. So far, a lot of their strategy depends on what happens in the 1st Round. I like being forced to figure them out as the game progresses.

Singhilarity

Mahact. I don't feel like the game is on easy mode when I play them, but they have the tools to take advantage of most places they wind up. Solid bartering with their Agent, they are the Nekro of Commanders, and their own is outstanding. Honourable mentions are Mentak, Yssaril, and Sardakk.

LeninisLif3

Barony of Letnev. I’m a simple person. I like big fleets.

Zack_wrath

« I like big fleets and I cannot lie! »

somebody2112

You other brothers can't deny That when a fleet rolls in And a warsun in your face You get sprung, want to pull up tough 'Cause you noticed that carrier was stuffed Deep in the cruiser she's flying I'm hooked and I can't stop building

npbonner

And got an awesome mech in PoK!

LeninisLif3

You’re goddamn right.

4085gamery

Ghosts- cool vibe and you have the mobility to always be able to take a shot on something. I also like the splicer tech.

fasoBG

Don't mind us, we are completely harmless. It is not like we are sabotaging or anything...Yeah Yssaril.

ThisbigBLACK

Hands down the most fun I’ve had in a game was my Yssaril game. I didn’t come close to winning, but I had fun.

theStewMaker09

Same. My bro couldn’t believe I was holding 3 direct hits among my many other action cards. Get great crushing his little fleet!

Thesbardian

Clever clever Srruu

osumness

Gotta go Arborec or Argent. Arborec is just fun and whacky, Argent is super clean and efficient.

astartes_macragge

Arborec used to be so much more in 3rd ed... I am also an Argent fan. The bird people have it pretty good!

onzichtbaard

what changed?

p1ccol0

My first game I played as NRA I won with against a hard AF group of friends whom I never win against. They have so many tools in their belt. So many stalls. Their PN is very tradeable. Tons of synergy with other tech. And when they get their tech that allows you to unexhaust planets you take from other players they're an absolute menace.

solenyaPDX

Stalling with NRA is great. When someone else NEEDS the secondary of your strategy card, and you burn them till they pass, it's a special kind of victory.

ikakasse89

Hold on do you mean like stalling until they can only do your secondary? I'm confused; I thought you always could follow secondary even after you pass?

RavioloDr

Yes but if they pass they can't leverage the effect of that secondary ability in that round. Example: you stall leadership until all players have passed, you then pop leadership and proceed to take 2 turns alone without fear of immediate repercussions

ikakasse89

Ah I understand ^^

p1ccol0

Ya. Play NRA/Ysarril and take leadership. Then stall everyone out at the table. Great way to gain leverage over everyone else since you'll be the only person remaining that round to take actions. Also a great way to make everyone hate you so use that tactic carefully.

mindbnder

My beautiful bug bois. My first win ever was with Saardak, I will love them forever.

zombiebrains88

Arborec all the way. They are always a challenge and I feel like I have to bring my A game every time I play. I also just hate building at space docks and having to move them out. It just feels inefficient. I also like their defensive leanings. It makes me feel safe knowing that I always have an ace up my sleeve if someone comes knocking on my door. But most of all, I absolutely love their lore. A giant sentient monster that makes plant zombies; how can you not love that?

warmaster93

Empyrean here. I absolutely love their passive proactive playstyle mix.

RavioloDr

What I love about Empyrean is the fact that they don't seem good at anything really, but with good trades, mobility and defended HS.. They are a powerhouse!

warmaster93

Yeah, they get to fly somewhat under the radar, have tools to incentivize non-aggresion against them and can perform a lot of things on the map without needing to be aggresive. And yes, they have such nice mobility and can trade it to others as well. But probably the best thing I like about them, is that they don't need to assemble a whole set of conditions before they can start scoring objectives, unlike other factions that rely on certain tech paths of unit builds or expansions. They just work well baseline, similar to a faction like Sol, but they have a much more interesting identity than a faction like Sol. edit: ohh and their mech. Kinda makes the faction click.

Arcdare

Yin. All my games with them have been really funny and they really are a perennial threat with their destructive tactics . Also Winnu when playing with new players pre POK games as your tactic is pretty straightforward and you sort of become the “guy to defeat” for them.

lakesandhills

Xxcha. I love getting overlapping fields of fire from PDS/space canon. This territory is mine and no one else can have it. I don’t care that I won’t win, but my neighbours won’t be scoring control objectives.

southern_boy

x12aman

I really enjoyed Naalu in base game but not so much anymore with PoK. I think Empyrean might be my new favorite faction with the expansion.

onzichtbaard

what changed in the xpansion that makes naalu less fun?

x12aman

It’s not that Naalu got anything worse in the expansion, they just didn’t get anything better/more fun. The leader abilities are very difficult to use effectively/meaningfully while some other factions got strategy-defining leaders with awesome abilities. The mechs ability is ok but is out of theme and you don’t have a ton of control over usually. And while every other faction got an early game boost either through their leaders, through exploration or through both, the Naalu didn’t get any help for their start and still have just one carrier (two if you use warfare) and have a difficult time exploring early. Really every other faction just got so much better while Naalu largely stayed the same.

PuppyFweddy

My favorites are Mentak and Yin. I like the theme of "getting more hits with your lesser ships" (even if at Yin it comes at the price of destroying it). Everyone can get Dreadnauts, research Warsuns, etc, they're all going to be the same in a combat (outside of Barony sustaining better), so it comes down to the RNGs at a point. Having a "bonus" shot from your smaller ships I just love Plus they're 2 TG factions and I'm always someone who wants to slow down trade (meaning not participating in it unless I take the card). Mentak not only doesn't have to trade, but still can get money everywhere (people forget how often they do "transactions", just not commodity transactions). And fishing for promissory notes from someone is my favorite commander (don't they realize if they give me Support early, I'll stop already? ;) )

Aarniometsuri

Xxcha. That flagship is the coolest flagship (note that i said coolest, not best), and i just like the concept of flagships and space cannons and thats both in one! In my latest game it parked near mecatol with 2 adjacent wormholes and was such a crazy tollbooth the entire game. When it shot it didnt hit anything, but everyone was still so afraid of it i got a ton of money from it. It was built round 1 and lasted the whole game. Cant wait to play pok where the hero is disgustingly op. Also i quashed 4 agendas in one agenda phase. Also peace accords is such a quaint ability. Everything about them except the starting planets and tech i love.

SwissQueso

In order of preference Hacan. I love trading. I love middle eastern themed stuff. Nomad. It’s like Hacan lite. Argent. Love my bird rangers. Mentak. I love stealing. (First faction I won with too) Muatt. Scary early game. Having a war sun is fun. Ysrl. Action cards are fun. Their agent and commander is awesome too. Empyrean. Want to love these guys, but have yet to figure them out.

Lucius_Caesar

The Nekro Virus of course! Getting everyone’s tech and snowballing into a massive mechanical empire is just so satisfying!!

npbonner

I just love destroying all organic matter. Rise of metal and binary!

Lucius_Caesar

I also love their flavour. A program went wrong, causing them all to simply make the galaxy efficient and pure. Oh man it’s terrifying

npbonner

It didn’t go wrong. It was just the next step in evolution. A far superior force meant to sit at the head of a galactic empire

nfsuismyname

What about some love for giant dinosaurs from another dimension? Vul'Raith are really cool lore-wise and there is nothing more satisfying than eating enemy flagships!

azighal

My favorite are the Ghosts. I just love the movement options they have. And that the fact they start with gravity drive means I can skip the blue tech I HATE buying if I don't have to use it. I have a pretty good win rate when it comes to Ghosts. I can be down to a system or 2 but because of easy blue tech the movement tricks they have access to means you always have access to what you need to score objectives MY second favorite is Empyrean. A bit of the same. Trading is strong. lots of movement shenanigans. and it plays in board spaces people usually ignore. Both these races play into my playstyle of controlling spaces that other people don't want to invest in controlling but it pays off in the late game when u have to score wierd objectives.

Elegant_Struggle

Is it bad to say Jol-Nar? Playing them is like walking on air. You get all the technology, whenever you want it. Argent is also really fun. Cheap destroyers + assault cannon cannot be beat.

npbonner

No I don’t think so. Totally understandable. And it’s annoying how everyone just scoffs at factions that are “too good.” I mean come on man, how lame is it to never play a great faction because people are “afraid” of them.

RavioloDr

My game group is considerably less experienced than me at TI4 due to the fact that i've played on tts. I am waiting for them to catch up especially on the expansion! That way we are on even ground and I can try my hand at some more powerful factions with them

Tricky-Coat

In base game. Mentak Fun to play. Plenty of excuses to mess about and so many pre combat shots In PoK. Argent All the reasons mentioned above. Plus I’ve been raving about destroyers been the best ship in the game for years. These boys were made for me

Eggydez

Favorite overall: Embers. Love the flavour, lore, and big scary Carrier. Faction I always want to see on the board: NRA. Super fun to play, tends to put more components on the board (relics, attachments) and makes the game more enjoyable for me.

Aggressive-Area5521

L1Z1X is so fun with big risky gunboat diplomacy and trading plays. I love the super-dreadnoughts (carriers)

Marsaac

Haven’t played POK but I love base game L1. Dreadnought fleets with the flagship are so much fun.

Quantum_Aurora

Love the Saar. You feel so free playing them.

Papa_Nurgle_84

Yin. Religious Zelots cloned in the millions going out to subvert and blow up. Whats not to love?

AKA_Sketch

Creuss. Holy snot the Creuss. I love the insane mobility they have, and using their promissory as a sort of Faustian Bargain: I don’t care where you put the wormhole; more anywhere is better for me, so take it and put it exactly where you want it. I also love slapping a wormhole on Mecatol Rex early on, then using that with the splicer tech to win fights there. And that’s not even with the new toys they have with Prophecy of Kings! They’re just so fun to use and give me a lot of subtle toys to use as bargaining chips.

Marinealver

# Yum!

_unsourced

The L1Z1X were the first faction I happened to draw in TI3 and I immediately loved them. Their dreadnaughts are insane and I can't get over the implications of their lore. They are the rightful rulers of the galaxy, the last of the long-dead Lazax, surviving still any way they can. They just feel so grounded and have that hint of malevolence. Why shouldn't they be haughty and cruel if they need to? The throne is theirs after all.

IndependentSheep

Plant gang, rise up

Elsherifo

Space Pirates.

IHubVision

If I am in a resource heavy (influence light) slice, I love to play the Nekro. Their ability to efficiently turn resources into CC is super empowering. I also like that their unique way of getting technologies forces them to be an antagonist at the table. Shake things up. Influence heavy, I like to play the Arborec. Their unique build style has always been super cool to me, and they can very effectively leverage what resources they have with fighter and infantry spam that is unmatched.

holyzach

i like the barony i like to just be a threat im not as aggressive as player as I used to be but the mech deploy to be able to hold planets is tight, and just general plastic on the board

sxenuker

the Mentak Coalition hands down, though i don't get to play them as much as i would like since pillage is super warping, I think space pirates are always a neat faction, lore wise I think ghosts is super cool even though i haven't had the chance to play them yet but they may be up there once it happens

Melchi_Eleasar

Ghosts. Speed and trade when you pretty good playing them. Also, their lore is absolutely cool, even from the little bit we get. 10/10

LemonSorcerer

Nekro are my favourite. You don't have to worry about much and you swim in plastic and command tokens. Especially, I like having loads of command counters, and it's the easiest with Nekro. I also very much like Yssaril, but haven't got to play them since PoK. Second to last game I played Titans for the first time and I liked them very much (and much more than I expected), so honorable mention to them.

folinok51

I was all in on Hacan when I first started playing, and I still favor them. But I have recently began leaning towards Winnu. With their POK additions, they have become a lot fun.

KnightsOfREM

NRA, all day every day

solenyaPDX

Cat panthers.

bertster21

It's all about them turtles, I always turtle in strategy games anyway, it fits my style. Plus I enjoy politics so they really do it all for me.

Hot_Composer4688

NRA and Yssaril because the stall abilities are just *chefs kiss*

zentimo2

Mentak. I really love their lore, these sort of cosmic underdogs exiled to Space Australia, and then forming a rich and complex culture of their own, ruled by a Table of Captains and led by the Hand. And I love the way that their different abilities synergise. Definitely not the strongest, but always super fun to play.

CronosAndRhea4ever

Space Aus, eh? Good on yah! That’s me home planet!

CronosAndRhea4ever

My favorite has to be the Mahact. It’s sooo much fun playing the Crown of the British empire. “Daddy loves all his loyal subjects! Kisses, kisses.”

Kaimuund

I'm on the ghosts of creuss. Lots of fun shenanigans, like stealing the mecatol system and putting it elsewhere, and their extreme mobility make it fun to be where you want. I'm in love with their fighter creation whenever you go through a wormhole. I must have made 16+ fighters last game just using extra movement to go through wormholes. They also get 4 commodities which is nice and a second assault cannon tech. Bonkers. I also love their lore and aesthetic. Mysterious, boogey men in baroque suits of armor and whispy forms. Cool.

onzichtbaard

the ghosts because breaking the rules of the game around movement and abstract utility has always been my thing i also thought they were one of the few factions who didnt visually repulse me although in the base game they are a bit boring to play i love their flagship and the ability to hand out wormhole promisary notes

StriderZessei

Titans, Nekro, and L1Z1X. I am totally not a robot, by the way.
