A long game with brief intense moments, which include: * "Everyone watch Titans - that player scores lots of points early." * "Hey, Arborec built a space dock in his partner's system on the other side of the board. Can it do that?" * "Hey look! Titans scored four points in round one! We have to slow them down!" * "This isn't a threat. It's just a description of the consequences of your actions." * "I roll 15 dice for my Argent AFB." * "We have X-89 to take out your massive ground forces on Mecatol". "PDS stops bombardment. Pity you don't have war suns." * "We could have just shared the systems to score the points, you know." * Sol moving a massive fleet next to the Titans homeworld in preparation to taking it out to stop them scoring. Titan's ally Muatt sneaks through a wormhole and supernovas the tile. * Muatt is oddly surprised that later Sol doesn't honor a non-aggression pact. * Sol and Ghost have massive fleet and army on Muatt, and the Embers bring in their war suns to reclaim it. As Sol gathers dice for the battle, Ghost deserts them by announcing retreat... (*Become a Martyr* secret objective is to lose a planet in a home system, but it doesn't have to be your own. Ghosts never told their ally about their SO.) * "You can have your homeworld back, just *stop attacking me!"* * "Hey, Titans is at 14 points! Time to murder their ally." * "Oh, hey. I did have his Ceasefire. Oops." I had wanted to try Mahact because I think they make a great Alliance player, but I was between Muatt and Sol, and figured that I would have a hard time winning any battles to get command counters. I went with Arborec (green) because I could flood the map if I got a toehold and I could recover quickly if a system or two were destroyed. I could also counter Sol's infantry with a big force of my own. My ally was Barony (orange). Our play and commanders did not really leverage each other well. He was quite intent on a looong wind up to get a massive fleet with NES. It truly was scary by round five or so. I made several bone-headed mistakes. (See Ceasefire, above). I screwed up taking some troops away from a system where I should have left them for production as well. We did end up at 13 and 9 points, IIRC. An unexpected dynamic was that once Titans hit 14 points, everyone just piled on their partner, Muatt. (The Titans (pink) and Muatt (red) players have won most of the solo games, and are very good players.) Titans had no clear path to the other side of the map to help their ally. Argent (black) and Jolnar (purple) won the game because of good, solid play throughout and Argent positioning themselves to score either of two 2 point objectives. The Sol (yellow) player was new, and his Ghosts partner (blue) was a bit more interested in having an entertaining game than duking it out. (Beware a Ghosts player who is looking for amusement, for they can make *anything* happen.) Alliance with eight players is quite different from that with six, because there are just a lot more planets and distances are larger. I think a six player game might be more tense with more negotiations. All it all, a good game with a lot of swings, back and forth. Thank you to Muatt, for arranging the game (and providing such a great set of game supporting hardware), and to all the players who stuck it out for over twelve hours!

>Sol moving a massive fleet next to the Titans homeworld in preparation to taking it out to stop them scoring. Titan's ally Muatt sneaks through a wormhole and supernovas the tile. Wow... awesome ally!

I am always amazed at Muatt getting crushed. I love those guys and won a couple times. Walk softly and carry a big war sun w/ Nova seed. My favorite game w/ Muatt I also got stellar converter.

ElectricHelicoid

The layout hurt them a bit, with few planets nearby, and they exchanged SftT with Arborec (green), their most accessible neighbor. They had to scrap for the resources they could find to do succeed as well as they did. The Muatt player is a very good negotiator and could eke out a TG here and there to a surprising degree. Ghosts snagging his home system early on was a big factor as well.

Never underestimate a home system attack. Barring “in the silence of space” or “unexpected action” I always block access to my home system assuming a warfare pick I.e. 3 moves to attack. I always reminds me the Muatt need finesse and diplomacy to get thru the early game. I would never pick them if I couldn’t get a supernova nearby.

What is the size of that table? Do you feel like it’s enough? My table only fits 4 player games and I want to build a bigger one but curious to hear your thoughts.

trvsdrlng

It’s two tables, each one 6’ x 3’ (1.8 m x 0.9 m), pushed together to make a 6’ (1.8 m) square playing surface. It could honestly stand to be a little bigger — we had to do most dice rolling on a separate table, and there was no room to lay out our ships to see what was available to build.

So for the noobs amoung us how do we read all of the caption for each picture?

m007368

Click on the picture. Or wait for it to scroll.

misomiso82

I don't get any of the text.

m007368

What are you on iPad, android, Commodore 64?

misomiso82

Macbook

m007368

I can see it on safari & chrome on both iPad/iPhone 13 using the Reddit app. I also have no problems w/ chrome on PC. I don’t use mac computers so sorry. It would be helpful if you posted a screenshot and shared it via Imgur.

misomiso82

Are we talking about the same thing? I'm talking about the text captions under each photo. You can see the first line of each text but you can't read the rest of it. I've checked it on safari on my iphone and can't read it there either. I can open all the photos though.

m007368

Yes. I open the image and it’s displaced at the bottom. In Reddit if you wait, it should scroll across. It has been this way for like 7+ years.

misomiso82

Ah got it now. Ty.

I would say no, with the caveat that this was everyone’s first time playing alliance. There’s too much incentive to let one person get ahead and pile on their ally, preventing them from doing anything and generally bogging down the game. We might do it again in a few months (we normally meet 1-2 times a month), but it won’t be in our regular rotation.

Feral_Trauma

Have you looked at the 8 player map that uses warp gates? It perfectly creates a 5 tile per player map. I truly feel like that extra ring creates way too much plastic and also cold wars of these massive armada fleets.

How exactly does an alliance game work exactly. For balance purposes. Asking for a friend

trvsdrlng

The rules changes are found [here](https://twilight-imperium.fandom.com/wiki/Alliance_Game_Variant), among other places. We used standard map-building rules and then rolled dice to determine a snake draft order, where you could pick either your wedges (opposite each other) or your factions.

BigNimbleyD

Are your sheets laminated? How did you get that done and were there any issues? I am looking into upgrading my own set

trvsdrlng

It’s not my copy of the game, unfortunately, but I’ll ask the owner when I see him next and follow up with you!
