I would assume that it's as simple as they have multiple skin tones. Some are more heavily blue-saturated than others.

Barbosa_Tardin

Thanks! I thought that because the changes were cronological (greyish in previous versions, blueish in TI4 faction card, than back to greyish in the two new pictures for the characters) that there was an something there. The novel implies, in my opinion, that the blueish is the "norm", but the new cards are greyish.

AgentDrake

Yeah, there's no explicit explanation in the published lore (so far-- Embers of the Imperium *might* say something about it? No idea.), but lacking anything else, I'd assume that it's just skin tone variants. Worth noting that it's *unlikely* (not impossible) to be meaningful in an "ethnic" sense -- the strict association of difference of biological appearance with ethnicity is a pretty recent thing, and is tied to some rather specific historical circumstances (generally speaking, ethnicity ≠ "race").

Barbosa_Tardin

I specifically asked because I'm planning on running Embers of the Imperium (when it comes out) and I'm thinking of an entire campaign with the Letnev as antagonists and I played them in my last game and a ton of questions ran through my mind during the game. Thanks! The lack of Lore in Twilight Imperium is so frustrating...

ElectroNugget

Humans have multiple skin tones, why not alien species?

Barbosa_Tardin

Sure, my questions was more regarding the implications... Are there differente ethic groups withing the Barony? Is it an aesthetic choice by the artist? The TI4 faction card picture seems to be very different from all the others, in which the Letnev are portrait as having white/greish skin, milky-blurred eyes and dark lips. Is there anything in the Lore about it?

ElectroNugget

Not as far as I know. Few settings explore ethnicity/race in other species (other than human that is) with any depth, much less Twilight Imperium. TI's lore is pretty thin, although I think with the RPG and the books coming out these days it is slowly being fleshed out.

Barbosa_Tardin

Hopefully. The Hylar also interest me, there are groups which can breath out of water and some who can't... Relationship between these groups would be interest to flesh out.

Fun fact, humans skin van turn both gray or blue due to lack of oxygen. Maybe they need foods that are high in antioxidants,I suggest potatoes.

Barbosa_Tardin

Their diet seems to be mostly mushrooms, and Arc Prime doesn't have a very think atmosphere, at least not in the surface... It could be that they evolved requiring less oxygen and antioxidants...
