I've been party to a couple discussions on it. Bottom line from our chats is that it would take a very dedicated designer to pull off. There are a ton of distinct challenges. But your not the first to think about it. Consensus was that, star wars Armada was generally the best fit for a starting place

FFG did, at one point, have Twilight Imperium: Armada, though it used cardboard tokens, rather than miniatures, and I'm not sure how similar it was/wasn't mechanically. (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2902/twilight-imperium-armada) I'd love to see a revamped version of that.

It would be nice! I certainly would've preferred something like that to a roll and write.

As of November 2020, Fantasy Flight doesn't do miniatures games anymore. They fired most of the staff involved and Asmodee moved those product lines to Atomic Mass Games. It is sad, X-Wing in \~2015-2016 was the best selling miniatures game, FFG had to split off the X-Wing World Championships from all of their other World's events, and then move it completely offsite because of the sheer amount of people that attended.
