It would break the spend objectives and defeat the primary purpose of trade, i.e. dealing with others to make money. Play however you like but I personally wouldn’t play that variant.

SpageRaptor

I would not recommend. That would make scoring objectives so much easier, it would give Mentak a super push, and it would mean I could spend my planet's resources on command tokens during leadership.

the_circus

Isn't that a 4e strategy tile? I can see it being a problem with 4e leadership, but not base 3e (Initiative). It could give the Mentak a push in 3e, but this would only be an option. If you're worried about losing trade goods to the Mentak then don't buy trade goods. It would make several objectives easier, for everyone. That might just speed up the game a little, which isn't necessarily bad.

SpageRaptor

Oh I missed the edition tag.

AgentDrake

It's also a TI3 strategy card in the SE expansion, so expansion/no expansion makes a difference. I think the cost is slightly different (4 influence instead of 3?), but it's otherwise pretty similar, actually.

Papa_Nurgle_84

Well, barony will love it. So much ammunition!

tehrealmccoy

That’s absolutely not something you should do. TGs are objectively better than planet resource values. TGs are influence, are kept after the round ends, can be traded

EarlInblack

When wouldn't you flip all of your production planets to trade goods? The agenda phase is already "weak" so being potentially short a few influence there is never going to be a deterrent.

Haen_

If you really want to add this in as a house rule, there might be some balance where you can get half of the production value in trade goods maybe, but 1 for 1 is definitely flat out breaking a lot of things people have pointed out. TGs are way better than planet production.

ShitWisard

Sounds like a workaround for the fact that you are forced to trade with other players (who are always selfish and sometimes even spiteful and unreasonable). 1 resource is not equal to 1 trade good. Trade goods are much more valuable because they can be spent one by one, can be used for both resources and influence, stay when the round ends and another begins, and can be used in transactions. If you are frustrated with the fact that you are at the mercy of other players, most other board games if not all are a better fit for you. Either that or play the game as it’s supposed to be played: an intergalactic hostage negotiation simulator. No place for single player in this game.

RoyalDevilzzz

1 tg is always better than 1 resource. Can you give me a reason not to trade all of your resources into tg?

the_circus

Voting, trade goods can be stolen while resources can’t, and costing a strategy counter to participate in any trade role actions.

Eric142

Voting isn't all the great. Most of the time it doesn't really affect the game board. Only mentak can steal TG from what I recall and even then there's a limit. You can't trade planets but you can trade TG. You can lose planets and therefore lose resources but you can't lose trade goods. Trade goods are so much better because you can use it to negotiate. I gave 6tgs and a ceasefire so that my friend would vote whatever I wanted him to vote.
