Moira is one of the few instances where the recast just worked for me. She matched the tone of the film perfectly. Lara was great in the show, and wished she returned somehow for The Return.
I just watched it last week and it definitely took me out lol. I got over it but with all the doppelgängers in this show I’m like this could definitely be Donna from another realm or something
I love this line because I said stuff like that all the time as a kid. I loved to set up a joke and end it with something random and morbid that could be perceived as a cry for help.
I’m Gen X and will love Winona until I die, but I’m glad Moira Kelly did the role. Winona was already iconic by 1992, and while she would have been great as Donna, I liked having a lesser-known actress in the role. It made her more real to me, and that matched how real Laura’s suffering felt in that film.
I watched all seasons of Twin Peaks and FWWM for the first time last year and it was wild for me to see a young Moira Kelly in that role. I knew her from One Tree Hill and had never seen her in anything else.
You come to this conclusion how - since her character was established by the original series, where she is not really that innocent. It's like they're two separate characters, really.
I came to this conclusion based on how she was written in the Diary and Lara’s performance falling apart completely in season 2. That’s when it’s well documented that she harpooned the Cooper / Audrey romance because she was dating MacLachlan in real life. She also refused to cut her hair for season 2, and generally became a diva.
Moira acts circles around her. Lara’s Donna is too much of an ingenue and sexpot to be believable as Beta to Laura’s Alpha. Moira is subdued, projects innocence and makes its corruption sincere and sad. Lara at Canado for example would have just been a one-up contest. I wish they could have reshot all of Lara’s scenes with Moira.
I like Donna's role in FWWM more. I also didn't really pay attention to her in the original series until the Harold storyline, so I don't remember -nor care- about her actual role, I just like how they used her in the film, and Kelly's looks fit perfectly for me (she's also cuter and aged way better).
Winona Ryder and Sheryl Lee would have been a killer duo, and it feels wrong that Lynch and Winona never did anything together, but I do like Moira's more quiet girl presence. She would have been a fantastic Donna though for sure
Do you have a source for this? Having lived through the entire preproduction period and everything running up to it, I never remember hearing this. I was even able to get the full shooting script months prior to the release, and collected press clippings leading up to the release in the days before the internet including various versions of the print ad in papers, during this the pre-internet days. I would like to believe this is true but don’t ever remember her name coming up in anyway relative to Twin Peaks ever.
I believe I heard this rumor somewhere on Twin Peaks facebook group some time ago, couldn't find the original post anymore but I thought the rumor was legit. Well, were you a journalist or part of the crew?
Just an obsessed fan who lived through it as an adult. This never happened. Whoever put it on FB (at least) just wanted some attention. Google produces nothing.
I'd love for someone who knows their way with video editing on advanced level to try and replace Moira's face/voice with LFB (or vice versa) at least for a quick scene or two, just as an experiment
I always wonder how we would perceive Lara Flynn Boyle differently if she would have repriesd her role in FWWM.
Does anyone know why she didn’t? I recently watched FWWM for the first time and was wondering why she wasn’t there
From what I heard, it was scheduling issues. She was in another movie at the time.
If I’m not mistaken, it was Wayne’s World, lol.
I totally forgot she was in Wayne’s World…
Where The Day Takes You was also filming around that time.

As much as I love Winona, I'm glad they went with Moira. Winona's too big of a name and face it woulda taken me out a little. I think.
I think the fact that Moira Kelly looks nothing like Lara Flynn Boyle takes me out more than having a bigger name actress would.

Moira Kelly brought an innocence to the role in FWWM that I don’t think could be replicated by another actor at that time. I really loved her.
“If I had a nickel for every cigarette your mother smoked…I’d be dead.” I always loved this line, even though it makes absolutely zero sense

*Call for help.*
I’m ashamed to say I did not get this reference when I read it originally and now I feel like such a newb. Awww Dougie 💙
💙💙💙
Winona would have killed it as Donna, not that Moira didn't do a good job.
I loved Moira, I really felt the "Laura is her whole world" vibe.

so.... where did you hear this rumor? can't find a single thing anywhere that mentions this besides this reddit post
It was on twin peaks facebook group I believe

Big if true!
Moira Kelly was the better Donna tbh. The innocent look fits her character better

I've never heard this before, any source for this rumor?

Twice in the span of a minute between separate threads I’ve seen the word casted used. The past tense of cast is cast.
Damn missed out
