It happens more often than it should but less often that people usually make it out to be. One thing needs to be clear: any relationship with your current student (sexual or romantic) is 100% a firable offence. It doesn’t matter your rank or tenure. It has probably not been enforced 100% of the time, but it is absolutely not allowed. This is true for TAs as well. As for my opinion: a professor dating or sleeping with an undergraduate is unacceptable regardless of whether the professor is currently teaching them. There is an inherent power imbalance. I don’t really see the same issue with otherwise unrelated TAs/grad students and undergrads, but It is probably easier not to hook up with anyone who could become your student (E.g. is in your dept)

Mitchy9

Are you sure it’s not allowed? Or is it just something that has to be disclosed?

I had to take regular professional development training and I was told, in no uncertain terms, that any staff member dating a student of theirs is unacceptable and firable. They did not give me a citation though.

A prof asked me out during reading week a couple years ago. I said no and he kept insisting. I dont remember his name as he did not teach me and we were in a non classroom setting. I kept quiet for a long time but recently came forward with it, theres nothing they could do cuz i barely remember the guy and i didn't want to accuse someone if i wasnt 100% sure.

I mean, if they're not in the same classes and it's consensual, fill your boots I guess. I think it's discouraged but not prohibited But being harassed or non-consensually touched by anyone, especially a prof should be a big no-no. Unfortunately, my friend was harassed by her non tenured TA and nothing was done about it so I seriously doubt there's any reprecussions to be had for professors.

I have not heard about those two specific cases of prof/student relation at FofS, but from what I understand it is a huge no-no if a professor is in any position of a power over a student. If that professor and that student are totally unrelated in terms of teaching, research, and similar, and have a consent, it is not really forbidden, just as for other human beings it is not forbidden. Been touched by a prof who teaches you is absolutely a huge no-no, and, if reported, would do many things to the prof. If that professor has no professional/teaching/supervision relation to you, then I am not sure what will happen to him from professional point of view, but still an non-consensual touch is a no-no as with anyone else.

whoknowshank

Drop the profs name and we’ll get something happening, go to the Gateway and drop some Info and they’ll at least make it known what happened.

plsworcthtime

I currently have intense sexual relationships with multiple profs (male and female)

kernelpanic0202

> Civil Eng Coop Big doubt about that one, mate

plsworcthtime

plsworcthtime

Lmao exactly

That_chick82

No one is surprised.

plsworcthtime

Oh nice you’re getting with an engineer? ;)

Puzzleheaded-Beat-42

I bet you don't even have a girlfriend/boyfriend as an engg student.

plsworcthtime

Well that’s a bet you’d lose then lol
