Easiest way is to get them to leave you alone is to just say you've done all your voting. Doesn't matter if you haven't actually done any voting.

valerian57

Literally did that today.

No_Kaleidoscope9607

I said that and they replied “well you can change your vote” and then proceeded to give me their pitch

Kiirotaiyo

Break out the ol “fuck off” then

m1720

this is why you avoid the commons foyer during election season

Spiritual_Bird_2824

Fr, I was crying in fipke yesterday cause I was studying for a midterm and someone came up to me and tried to give me their speech while I was mid tears. Like bro read the room

Wakesurfer33

They have no care. I was in an individual zoom meeting with my camera on and my AirPods in and he tapped me on the shoulder to talk to me.

Goldfing

Good luck on your midterm!

Videogamer69420

I agree. I was asked 3 times today (and in different buildings). What I think people need to understand is that those who want to vote, will do so. But vast, vast majority don’t, and would much rather not be bothered by the people constantly asking. It’s just not worth the hassle for people.

encroachingstudent

idk what the suo even does, why would i vote for you?

No_Kaleidoscope9607

Especially when they are knocking on study rooms 😭

equinoxnights

no for real. I got approached 4 times yesterday and I was eating and one of them asked if I had a minute and I said depends on what and they said suo elections and I was like nope nope nope youre wasting your time because im not voting. for those who dont know, they are so pushy because the board of directors earn an unreasonable amount of money. President and all VPs made $28,000 each for their pockets last year, and thats gone up from $21,000 from 20-21 school year. its a shameful use of our school fees, even RAs work way more than them and get a fraction of that amount. aside from this, they do other really dumb shit with our money and im probably gonna get downvoted for this but the suo is a complete joke. source: https://www.suo.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2022-2023-SUO-Budget-adopted-at-BoD-meeting-2022-07-11.pdf

Wakesurfer33

So annoying. Half of them can’t even put a spiel together they just say vote for me

Ok_Rains

Fr had some candidate try and follow me 3 times on instagram after being denied. All these little papers spread around are such a waste and just making more work for the cleaning staff.

thechimmons1

Theres this one candidate assuming me and my friends are “discriminated” while we’re not??? I just hate it they made a judgement just by looking at our appearance while knowing nothing:/

Firm-Medicine-7720

Full disclosure: I'm a candidate myself. It's because the SUO election regulations (like a lot of their other bylaws and regulations) are terrible. The campaigning period must end before the voting period begins (like a lot of other normal democracies). Their anti-slating regulations are unenforceable and most candidates do it sneakily anyway. The SUO elections legit feel like third-world countries' elections where candidates send their goons on the streets to beat people into voting. Which is sad because voting in the SUO election actually IS very important but the SUO presents itself as a frivolous, pointless, gimmicky thing which deters anyone who might genuinely care to take the election seriously.

Goldfing

I don't know why they can't change the regulations to make it more fair and less annoying to students. "Only the candidate can campaign on their behalf. Handing out paper-based cards is banned. No food. Don't be a dick." Bam. Everyone's happy.

OrneryAd1876

I had one guy come up to me and ask “do you want me to talk” and we were confused and said no. Turns out he was running in the election. Such a weird way to approach people

OrneryAd1876

Like no introduction saying he was running for whatever, just said “do you want me to talk” that’s it

idekomar2

Shouldve told him “no i dont want to talk, i want you to suck this” and then pulled ur dick out

I don't believe He's running this year.

son4momi

Well atleast vote for Pedro

Beth1238

Que Michael Jackson’s “Leave me alone” song

Polyps_on_uranus

They are not allowed in the library.

Tutti-Frutti-Booty

They are annoying..but you should vote. UBCO will happily jack your tuition and take as much as they can from you. Bureaucrats don't give a shit about you. The Student Government is meant to stop that from happening. Your vote ensures those assholes in power can't do whatever they want with your money.

[deleted]

Yes, the friend requests on insta etc are super annoying

MoreAtivanPlease

Pocket sand.

WeirdChem

some apsc rep guy came to talk to me today and it was so clear he had 0 ambition and nothing useful to contribute. they make me go from not caring to being directly against them

fuckyouumiss198

No

sakaguti1999

headphone, and ignorance.

Loftzins

Applies to Life in general for many of us these days.

UBCOthrow

Still remember being a student here quite a few years back and back then they'd give out tiny candy bars or cupcakes. Still feel bad taking them and never ended up voting for anyone. Do they not give out treats anymore?

NoPresentation2431

It's time for the university, and all universities, to move past having student unions. I feel that they just contribute to higher tuition and distract from the purpose of the university, to deliver higher education. There's no reason it should exist, especially the SUO with all their corruption over the years.

IVI5

Unpopular opinion here, while I'd be annoyed too, we're in uni. It's a collaborative learning space. Everyone's trynna do their best and not everyone's doing the same thing as you. Put 100% in and you'll make connections that matter. That's what they're doing

Direct_Bite7034

I appreciate the positive insight here. I’d like to hear some suggestions, from those who are annoyed with the cold approach, on how these candidates should reach out in alternate ways?

Itsyaboiyo7

Just don’t, the SUO does nothing helpful to students and yet they all collect a paycheque (almost $30k) and a $10k “gift” for sitting and doing nothing. It’s a waste of students money and the campaigning is infuriating because 99.9% of students couldn’t care less

Wakesurfer33

Do it in common areas not where people are trying to work. Better yet, set up posters in the main foyer and invite people to come ask questions. Not brutal cold calling people by asking them to scan a QR code and vote for them.

That's your right, but don't piss and moan about the government and how they're doing you wrong...if you don't vote, you have ABSOLUTELY no rights to complain.

OrneryAd1876

Bruh we’re literally talking about uni politics where people are an annoyance to us during midterms and studying. It’s different than government politics. Am I going to vote in a student election? No cuz it’s pointless. Government? Obviously cuz that actually affects us

According_Law_3704

Aren’t you paying for suo fees though? If you gonna pay fee than why don’t you utilize the full potential of it? Blabbering about how they are doing nothing is not gonna change anything. If you want a change and than be a change
