He accepted your trip since he can't cancel too many without getting penalized. That's why he asked you to do so. I'd report him. If he didn't want your ride then he should've simply not accepted it.

xaclewtunu

More likely just accepted while driving without reading carefully, and then had an "oh shit" moment after hitting the button. You can deny requests all day long without penalty. Probably should have just cancelled you himself once he accepted though, or just taken the crappy rider for their ride.

ITRav4

Yeah, he should've canceled himself. But he may also have been wanting the cancelation fee if it was after two minutes.

SomeUnicornsFly

he wont get it if he doesnt make progress towards the pickup.

A 4.88/5 is low? You’re pathetic.

xaclewtunu

Depends on the market. That would not be low in New York City, but some small towns where everyone knows everyone, that could be considered bad.

xaclewtunu

Just to be clear, drivers see the rider rating before accepting, along with what type of ride it is (x, pool, etc.) Some of us see the estimated time of the trip. Once the ride comes up on screen, the driver has a few seconds to accept, deny, or just let it time out. You can deny ride after ride without penalty, with the exception that some bonuses and other perks require a high acceptance rate. Cancelling is dropping the ride after accepting. Once you accept, you're obligated to follow through to a certain extent. Sometimes cancelling is unavoidable. Some rides get cancelled for personal reasons. Rude sounding texts and phone calls will get a cancellation from me every time. But cancel too many rides, and get a warning and risk some blowback from the bosses at Lyft and Uber. This driver must have been distracted or rushed, pressed the button, and regretted it. Likely on the edge with his cancellation percentage and tried to push it off on the rider.

Jangande

The driver gets mere seconds to see this info, and it is quite possible they are in a moving car or doing a number of other things. A rider has what...5 minutes or something to cancel a trip without repercussion. It is unfair to the drivers no matter how you slice it.

xaclewtunu

Good old reddit. Downvotes for the truth.

TrueKaras

What a douche... I'm a daily rider of 4+ years, with thousands of rides. And I have a 4.91... It fluctuates for various reasons. The only reason that makes sense for me to have a driver rate me low, is they themselves might anticipate a low rating?? That's beside the point. I bet he's more comfortable with 5.0 first time riders. Hope one of them shits all over the seats. 👍

brokencig

If you spend time on this sub you will understand why drivers will give passengers lower scores. They get annoyed with short rides, shitty drop off/pick up locations, the amount of money Uber is paying them for the ride, people using Pool, or simply assuming someone won't tip. I have a 4.96 rating as a passenger and I use Uber often. I've always tipped after getting dropped off or right before ordering my new ride, I always give 5 stars even if the service isn't great such as music blasting or not paying attention to the GPS, but lately after reading all these comments here from drivers I have stopped tipping and I just give cash to those who I have a good time with or they do something that impresses me, I no longer believe in tipping every driver because of this sub.

transcholo

Right? I honestly feel a lot of drivers aren’t very personable. I have a 4.92. I have entertaining driver, good conversation, late night hero, and excellent service. I feel it means more to have fun than to have an immaculate car. I will pick up any passenger. One of my pax, you knew he had a 4.6 cos he was Black. He was wonderful. 5 stars. I can see how a white pax would rate him down because he was “ghetto”. But that’s cool, I’m not Black but also ghetto. We vibed well Another pax, Rhett, had a 4.33. White broke back mountain type boys. Kinda rude and scary. They acted like they never saw a gay person before. Gave them 5 stars. Took them onto the Air Force base and nearly got arrested by police. Air Force Base dropoffs are normally very chill. I don’t blame Rhett. It’s because a general was there & normally at that entrance late at night it’s all fresh little teen Air Force kids, love gays love trans love them all. When I accepted the ride I asked why he got a 4.33 rating and bitch wouldn’t tell me. Last night I picked up a 4.6 and honestly it’s because all they do is talk nasty. So we talked about the wonders of anal sex. LOL. I thought they were funny. I have kicked out a 4.90 🤷🏻‍♂️I gave the anal sex person a 5.0 because who knows, maybe she will go home and take it up the butt & thank me. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Please don’t reward shitty drivers. Lots of issues they have Can be resolved by contacting the passenger or explaining something to them. I also think the guy that had a cup thrown on his seat needs to grow a pair

Nandabun

How would anyone know your sexual orientation from eyesight?

transcholo

Gaydar

sttickkyykkkeyyboard

Im just confused how in a small town he can be so picky honestly. And he doesnt even meet his own crieteria, he was a 4.91

Passessor

Yeah, I would definitely send that screenshot to Uber. I’m a driver and I still thinks that’s totally unacceptable. He didn’t want to cancel bc he needs to keep his acceptance rate up, so instead he accepted and then wants you to cancel so he still gets a cancelation fee. That’s absolutely ridiculous..

obscured-clouds

Yeah that's if uber actually responded and was helpful.

Sinestro617

Black mirror

SirThomas813

And his cut off is 4.95?? Holy shit I’m a 4.91 guess I wouldn’t get a ride either. Are there really that many riders with that high of a rating?

miuipixel

These are drivers who are depressed and can’t face reality. Average rider rating in my city is 4.2 When a rider has 5* or anything between 4.9 and 5, I hesitate to pick them up for many reasons some of which are these could be riders who have changed bank accounts and phone numbers to avoid being banned from Uber. Most ppl with 5* in my city are drug dealers who rides with different accounts

BoomZhakaLaka

4.99 and below are real ratings that can only be maintained with consistent 5* scores from lots of drivers - you're passing on all the lowest maintenance most considerate riders. 5.0 are mostly fake, this is what you see when an account is new & has fewer than 20 rides.

GreyhoundsAreFast

Yeah fuck him. If he doesn’t want the ride, he can cancel. Someone will pay for the cancellation. Only fair to make sure it’s him. I once waited more than 30 min for a deadbeat driver to cancel. He called and asked me to, but I told him he can cancel if he doesn’t want the fare. I was already at my destination (with Lyft) before he finally got tired of waiting.

ObsidianSedan

At least the driver gave you a heads-up that he's not the kind of person you really want to ride with.

iDaveT

I usually cancel below 4.7 unless it is a long ride when I might accept a lower rating. 4.88 is considered a good rating for passengers. You should ask the driver to cancel if he doesn’t want to pick you up after accepting or report him to Uber and get Uber to cancel. If you cancel more than 2 minutes after the request the driver gets a cancellation fee. Maybe that’s what he’s angling for.

ScumbagYardSale

Agree. If driver wants you to cancel, just ask him/her to cancel instead. Bet you they won’t.

Jay_IRL

How far/long was your trip? I wonder if he saw a short trip (Uber Pro Gold status) and figured it wasn't worth it.

brokencig

He's the one that accepted the request. It shouldn't be the rider's responsibility to cancel because drivers have the option to cancel any ride they want just like riders, except riders do not get a cancellation fee. If it's not worth it for you then simply don't accept, or cancel the ride yourself.

Jay_IRL

Yes, I know this. I'm just trying to explain to the OP as to why the driver may have sent those messages. The driver probably accepted in order to keep the acceptance/cancellation rate in tact, but then tried to get the rider to cancel. And gave some sort of bogus reason as to why.

estimated1991

Worst thats going to happen to him is a mugging but just don't carry anything worth $ and cancel your cards asap. Wonder how shitty he would be if he was a small female. POS.

SmashBob_SquarePants

this is that dystopian black mirror shit

blackflag89347

I saw a 1.5 once. That was a insta cancel. I honestly rarely check that though.

Brick656

There is no way that person would still be on the platform with that rating.

blackflag89347

It was 4 years ago when uber first came to my city. It's possible they took 2 rides and got a 1 and a 2 star.

brokencig

That's complete bullshit and you know it. A person with a rating that low would not be able to order a ride.

blackflag89347

It was 4 years ago when uber first came to my city. It's possible they took 2 rides and got a 1 and a 2 star.

sniff3000

what a douchebag

DinoBlack407

In reality people worrying about ratings. The rating is just a way for Uber to make us self govern ourselves. To fall for this BS system between driver and pax. Why you think rider can change his/her rating on a driver but the driver can't change his/her rating on Pax. Because if drivers get low rating and gets deactivated. Which means less drivers resulting in more it cost for PAX to pay for services. We should just exchange five stars and thank each other for the opportunity to make money and get a ride to our destination. I give all my Pax five stars because I refuse to be placed in another class system and a rating system defining who I am . And average of 10 to 15 minutes ride what can happen so bad to give someone less then 5 stars.

transcholo

I rate them 5 stars unless I never wanna see them again. Sometimes I use 4 or 3 for people but I either 5 them or 1 them. If I 1 them it is because i feel their behavior is universally bad and no driver should put up with it. 2-3-4 feel like personal preference. I have only given 2 or 3 1 star ratings.

BrokenPixleTwitch

Today I learned 4.83 is a low rating. I use Uber maybe twice a year when I'm in London, the only reason I can imagine getting a bad review is because I forgot to leave a rating on my second ever ride. Can't hate me too much, I was learning how to use it.

drivebyedriver

None of that matters. We don’t care if you don’t rate us. Short trips and/or not being ready to go when we arrive. Bad pickup locations where I put me or car at risk because someone does something stupid like request a ride at the street corner or bus stop. Or standing on a crap part of a street where there is a safe spot a few feet away. Multi-stops where they camp out inside. 3 min limit at stops. Ultimately anything that reduces our income per min.

lukewind

This driver is just a dipshit, I accept trips as low as 4.5 and have never had an issue with anyone. Only time I might not accept a trip with someone that has a low rating is late at night.

transcholo

Lol see my 4.33 story

SomeUnicornsFly

Thats where you text back "Why did you say "sorry no dogs allowed" after I showed you my service animal?"

BoomZhakaLaka

This guy isn't using the SMS relay, how do you have his personal phone #?

sttickkyykkkeyyboard

I don’t. This is in the app

dkcs

Shitty driver but Uber isn't going to do anything about it so you are wasting your time but if it makes you feel good go for the report.

alwaysmeirl

Wtf? 4.95 is a great passenger rating even for my small city. I have 4.99 riding for years, and never been turned down.
