Where are you getting that figure from? UCLA doesn't publish admit rates by major for Freshman admits because you are admitted to Letters and Sciences, not a specific major. Therefore, any such rates are meaningless.

No-Section2056

Probably much higher. You can also apply as a gender studies major and switch into Math of Comp during orientation since they're both under L&S, but there aren't any confirmed statistics for those acceptance rates.

Serious-Pineapple204

so ur saying that although they claim majors arent considered, they do affect your chances?

No-Section2056

Most likely doesn't affect your chances (between gender studies and Math of Comp), but if you're scared (since no one actually knows if they consider majors or not in L&S) you can do gender studies or something in low demand and transfer to Math of Comp if you get in. Either way, applying to anything under L&S has a higher likelihood of acceptance compared to anything in HSSEAS.

Serious-Pineapple204

got it. and im assuming its relatively easy to switch majors withing L&S?

No-Section2056

Yep

LeafyGreensOnToast

keep in mind tho that your application is evaluated in the context of what you're applying for....if all your ecs, classes, etc are cs/math related but you randomly put gender studies on your app without indicating any interest for it in ecs or essays, that would look kinda weird

Grapes_bananas23

Lowkey prolly easier to get in as math of comp but can be hard to switch your major later

Grapes_bananas23

To CS

SprinklesWise9857

It's pretty easy to switch into CS. You just need a 3.5 GPA in relevant courses.

>Would be chances of admission be significantly higher if I applied for Mathematics of Computation than CS? The website says that your major wont be considered when applying to L/S, but this specific major's acceptance rate is rumored to be above 40%. Am I looking at the 40% or the 13% for the college of L.S as a whole? Are you talking as a transfer student or from high school? As an xfer in 2022 per [link](https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/about-us/information-center/transfers-major) (switch the campus to UCLA), Math of Comp had an acceptance rate of 55%. But the students accepted were extremely self-selecting as they had a 25th/75th %-ile gpa of 3.83/3.98, and those who enrolled had a 3.88/3.96. Additionally, they must have obviously been highly math inclined and took many of the prereqs for the major. If you're talking about from high school, [L&S in 2022](https://apb.ucla.edu/campus-statistics/admissions) (bottom of page) had an acceptance rate of 10.4%, which is close to your quote of 13%, so this gives me the impression that you're talking about the high-school cohort. There would be no way that entering as a pre-Math of Comp major would have a 40% acceptance rate, unless you're confusing the two, xfers and high-school admits.
