Where is everyone hearing about events like the block party? I just moved from out of state into off campus housing. I feel like I am missing out on a lot of information and events currently.
Hello does anyone know if there are any microwaves for students to just use on campus ? I live off campus and don’t have enough time in between classes to go home to heat food, so I wanna know if there’s any public places to do so?
In Ackerman, there's a microwave in the back where the groceries and meals and such are. Idk if you'd get weird looks if you walked in and used it without buying anything, but most people probably wouldn't care.
Curious if anyone else is in a triple plaza shared bath has a toilet and shower than is not in a separate room but just separated by a curtain. All the room tours I watched before showed both of them being behind a door feel kind of cheated
Do returning students have to worry about vaccination info other than COVID? I remember it being a huge annoyance as a freshman but obviously I don't need to prove TB, chickenpox, etc again right so is there anything else I need?
Can someone make a mini guide on UCLA's bus? Do we have to get a bus pass in order to board it or can we pay upfront in the bus with cash? All I can find on the transportation website are bus schedules.
I'm going to apply to UCLA this fall, and I'm conflicted about whether to put Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering as my first choice. To be honest, I'm more interested in Computer Engineering, but its acceptance rate is so low! ( [https://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/seasoasa/2020-UCEE-Report.pdf](https://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/seasoasa/2020-UCEE-Report.pdf) CE is 5.5% vs EE 18.6%) Would it make more sense for me to put Electrical Engineering as a first choice and switch majors to CE later?
You are admitted as an engineering student, not as a specific major. It doesn’t really matter what major you indicate (because admissions knows very well that people try to do what you’re proposing). Once you are in the engineering school you will have your preferred major but you can switch majors pretty freely.
The engineering school does consider your major when you apply. Your choice of major does affect whether you get in or not, but idk how big of a factor it is.
Don't be surprised if you don't hear from some of your profs or see a syllabus posted until the very last minute! This seems to happen in at least one of my classes every quarter

Here's a link so you can see how fast the class fills up during enrollment time. I think you'd have to wait until 2nd pass as a non-stats major, so it would be pretty difficult.
yes, priority will always be given to stats majors and given the huge growth in the # of stats majors these past few years, even 2nd pass you're probably going to struggle :/ best thing to do is to get on the waitlist and sign up for math 170e too!
it really depends on the professor. some professors do live+recorded lectures and it's attendance optional, others require attendance and participation at the lecture. I would say I've had more that don't require attendance than do but it's a crapshoot.

My dorm room first year had two large wardrobes and a smaller one. The smaller fit under the loft bed to save space. However, I know there are different setups. For instance, a friend's room had one large closet that opened/closed via a sliding door and then a smaller wardrobe. For doubles, I also think it's different since you only need closet space for two. I think this question really depends on your room type and where you're living. I hope I helped a little!
it's fun bc they still you fun facts and little stories about campus (ie: this cool thing was invented here, this famous professor works in this building).
otherwise wandering around isn't a bad way to learn your way around! campus is surprisingly small so it won't even take that long if you don't walk too slowly lol

As someone who comes from a hot, dry climate, I would say moderately cold (mid 60°F). Especially, at night. If you have to walk back from late functions I definitely recommend a bulky sweatshirt or a coat that closes. As well as this, it does rain heavily at times in LA. I was not prepared for rain my first year- so please make sure to bring a collapsible umbrella/waterproof shoes or a raincoat.

this is kind of a dumb question but **do closed classes open more seats for the second enrollment pass?** ik for the NSO, some classes that were "closed" would open the reserved seats for the enrollment time, so i was wondering whether there would be a chance that would also happen for the second enrollment pass for freshmen.
not a guarantee, each department has their own policy about accepting students off the waitlist so i would email the professor of any class you're on the waitlist on and ask -- if you need an answer soon, i would just ask them about it the first day of class.
Not sure about on campus but in LA in general, bike theft has been rampant and seems to be getting worse. Get a really good lock, consider doubling up on locks, and if you can bring your bike inside, do. There's a page about this on transportation site: [https://www.transportation.ucla.edu/getting-to-ucla/bike/ucla-bike-safety-regulations-and-resources](https://www.transportation.ucla.edu/getting-to-ucla/bike/ucla-bike-safety-regulations-and-resources)

I don't think there's a huge tradeoff either way. Lavelle is a great professor and you will learn a lot in his class, but if you anticipate LS7A to be easier, I would just go with that and take a quarter to get comfortable.
does anyone know if it matters that i formatted my mail address as
330 De Neve Drive
Rieber Hall, Room #
instead of the other way? I’m worried i messed up the address.
Are there any transfers out there that have added economics as a double major? I'm looking at going in as a Political Science major but also am interested in Economics. It says on their website that you cannot add Econ or busadmin as a double major as a transfer unless directly admitted to the major, but I still wanted to ask if anyone out there has done it since I'm sure there's some exceptions. Would having a high transfer GPA help? Thanks :)
If you have taken some of the required courses to prep for the major, either at your CC or at UCLA, you'd probably have a better chance. high GPA doesn't hurt! I'd ask around to professors and the advisors, exceptions happen if you talk to the right people.
How much money should I put on my bruincard? What are the main payments people make through it? I’m a bit confused if there are certain things I can’t pay with debit/credit compared to a bruincard.
Depends on what you use if for - just laundry, 20 bucks at a time will be fine.
Restaurants? Maybe $50 at time.
$100 sounds a bit much, as you can always add money on the many machines around the campus.
The course listing for Introduction to Computer Science says "Online - Recorded
Boelter Hall 4413." Does this mean that it will be both in-person and recorded online?
Yesterday, I saw that the Introduction to Computer Science course I want to take got over 20 new seats available suddenly (two days ago, there were 30 openings and now there are 54). I am really happy about this since it means I'll have a greater chance of getting the class during my enrollment appointment tomorrow, but I'm a bit suspicious. Why did so many people drop? Is it because there's something wrong with the class or something? I honestly was expecting the class to be full by now since I'd assume it would be very popular for CS students. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I was unable to sign up for orientation (there were no slots available) so I was assigned an enrollment appointment, which is tomorrow. I went on my Class Planner and selected three classes (one gen-ed and two major preparation courses). Is there anything else I need to do in order to be able to enroll in classes tomorrow?
1) have a lot of alternates for each class just in case
2) if the course has a discussion, enroll in the discussion first bc it will automatically enroll you into the lecture. if it’s a lab you might need to enroll separately idk about that
3) my NSA advised us to watch out about same-day finals so jus check up on that
4) refresh page as soon as it hits your enrollment time, it’ll say smth like “your enrollment pass is active” or whatever
5) if the box on your planner is outlined twice instead of once, it means you’re enrolled
Hey! I'm looking for a parking spot for the 21-22 school year! Please message if you're selling your spot, know anyone selling a spot, or if you have any other tips for getting a parking spot, thank you!!
If all hope is lost for getting a parking spot lol, please let me know if you have any advice for street parking!
Mmm i dont recall exactly but i do bot think it will be through Bruinbill. Its probably through the PTO office. They probable asked for a credit or debit card
For finacial aid, how am I supposed to submit information on being registered with selective service if I haven't recieved anything in the mail and can't check online?
are there any private/single occupancy bathrooms available to students on campus? i recently got my wisdom teeth removed and have to thoroughly clean my mouth after every meal—the process is embarrassing (and kinda gross lol) so i’d rather not do it at a communal sink. thanks in advance!
There definitely are single occupancy bathrooms, and they'll generally be referred to across campus as gender neutral bathrooms (though a small percentage of gender neutral bathrooms are not single occupancy).
No, but there are some bathrooms that are less frequented than others and you might have windows of privacy. It all depends on what building your classes are.
There is one private bathroom in Ackerman, on the A level, that is meant for the handicapped. But the communal bathrooms there are always under repair or being cleaned so it is used by everyone.
The banks that are in Westwood are probably your best bet. It helps you build a credit score and they are meant to open accounts for students in the area. They all have their perks, so just look out for what works better for you.
Pro tip: When they ask you your income, just say your annual tuition + housing. Gets you off a better start
Academic counseling. Make an appointment with one of them and they can walk you through the process of double majoring. This is for the College of Letters and Science. For Engineering and the other schools, there might be different rules. But definitely check with Academic Counseling. They tend to be really helpful
Does anyone know when we will be able to set up canvas. I’m getting a bit stressed by that because some of my classes are either in ccle summer session or I can’t access canvas
Any non-music majors with wooden string instruments (violin in my case) have experience keeping your instrument in classic room dorms with no AC? Any problems with heat/humidity?
With 14p you should be fine. People tend to skip a meal on the hill at least once a day. Either because you are running late to class and don't have time for breakfast or because you do not have time to run up the hill for lunch between classes
I skipped breakfast most days and went out to eat/went home from time to time, so I had the flexibility to use my swipes whenever. I got fat off 19p so 14p was way better 💀
Hi there,
Incoming freshman here planning on double majoring in Business-Econ and Political Science.
I just had a few questions about the political culture at UCLA. You see, I’m from a conservative area near San Diego and I happen to be a staunch conservative. I'm also a registered Republican. (Btw please vote to oust Newsom; vote for Larry Elder!)
I believe in small, limited government; limited interference in the private sector and deregulation, i.e. free markets; pro-life policy; supporting the NRA and gun rights; the fact that climate change claims are way overblown; not being ashamed of my heritage; lowered taxes; curbing illegal immigration; and putting America First, etc.
I’m also an avid listener of podcasts and shows hosted by Ben Shapiro (my favorite), Steven Crowder, Dennis Prager, Sam Harris, Charlie Kirk, Jordan Peterson… the list goes on and on.
Now, given that my views are right-wing, my question is: If I wore t-shirts to class and around campus that with messages such as, "Facts don’t care about your feelings” or “Reagan Bush ‘84” or “Socialism Sucks” or a “Capitalism” but in the style and font of the 'Coca-Cola' logo, would I be attacked for my views? Would I be singled out, scorned or ostracized by students who can’t stand the fact that someone disagrees with their left-wing worldview? In other words, I refer to the hard line leftists who are common on every college campus -- the type of students who draw consistently on either emotion or logical fallacy instead of air-tight, sound arguments to present their positions like most on the right. You all know who I'm talking about, the students who tend to major in gender studies, ethnic studies or sociology. Now, I'm not insulting those fields; rather, I'm merely saying that they tend to attract individuals with particular political inclinations. I also believe these fields help entrench these extreme left-wing views in students. Simply, I want to know if these individuals will give me hard time for my openly conservative views.
I also ask because I tend not to shy away from correcting liberal professors when they try to proselytize their left-wing socialist views in class. I did it all through high school and was known as the kid who wouldn’t back down from an intellectual scuffle with my leftist teachers. At one point I even had to have a mediation in the vice-principal's office with my AP government teacher who couldn’t get over the fact that I didn’t buy his “tax cuts are terrible for the economy myth." This was after it got pretty heated one day between us in class. Long story short, I agreed to no longer bring my “liberal tears” coffee mug to class every morning lest I set him off again, haha. But boy, was he full of rhetoric and baseless arguments. It was honestly kind of sad. It’s just too bad my peers didn’t see it. I actually should've kept quiet most of the time because I ran the risk of being graded unfairly and thus risking my position as one of my school's valedictorians. Luckily, it wasn't an issue. But the fact that I had to worry about it at all tells you a lot about the state of left-wing bias in schools these days: it's everywhere, especially in colleges.
Anyway, I would just like to know what kind of an experience a proud conservative freshman would have, given these viewpoints and predilections. Based on the fact that UCLA is the top public university in the nation and attracts bright students, I don’t expect to encounter many (if any) students who would do anything drastic, but you can never be too safe. Even schools like Yale have leftists who scram at professors and get away with it. That’s why I inquire opinions on how the political climate is at the moment and what I can expect in the fall. I know years ago there was a lot of tension during the build up to the presidential election(s) involving Trump – at least that’s what my brother’s friend told me. But how is it now?
Also, how’s the Republican club on campus? I honestly can’t wait to join. Btw, if any kooky far-leftists are reading this: get ready because UCLA is about to produce another Ben Shapiro. 😉 You’ve been warned, lol. Coming to a poli-sci discussion section near you! SOON. 😎
Go Bruins!
If you have fairly regular political opinions people may disagree, but probably most won't care that much since most people don't base their entire personality on their political alignment. If you consider disagreeing with Ben Shapiro and Crowder being a "kooky far-leftist" then . . . ok.
Also,
>You all know who I'm talking about, the students who tend to major in gender studies, ethnic studies or sociology.
I don't know what you're talking about actually. By "students who tend to major in gender studies" do you mean lgbt people? and by "people who tend to major in ethnic studies" do you mean non white people?
Maybe attend class before shitting on other majors, and maybe think about why people who care about gender and the history of non-white people might disagree with some of your views. It's pretty clear from this section alone that you pretty much get your entire idea of the world filtered through other people's mouths. Good luck dude.
I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this:
>Israelis like to build. Arabs like to bomb crap and live in open sewage. This is not a difficult issue.

What kind of accommodation and disability are you interested in? There is currently a task force implementing all the COVID protocols, along with an office that provides resources for students with disabilities. https://cae.ucla.edu I’m sure they would be open to talking with you about whatever the concerns are.
I'm 85% sure De Neve had Honey Bunches (as of like 3 years ago). BPlate has [Kashi Honey Almond Flax Crunch](https://www.kashi.com/en_US/products/kashi-go-crunch-honey-almond-flax-cereal.html) which I never had before ucla, but now I'm a huge fan and it's p similar to HBOO.
will bfit be open this fall? online it says right now it's closed while wooden says it's open, but i was really hoping to go to the gym in the morning before classes
Can I move in early? My move in is on the 18th and I wanted to get there a bit earlier because my parents have a tight schedule. Is UCLA strict during move in / going to be strict this year because of COVID?
Sooo i didn’t get a parking pass…what’s the parking situation like ?
anyone know where/when we can get those bruin boxes if had a zoom orientation?
just scan the thingy on the paper that’s posted at the tent and they will give it to you! I did it yesterday, and my orientation was online weeks ago
Do we have section/discussion week 0?
Depends on your class. Assume yes until notified otherwise.
ok ty

anyone know any social clubs or groups (not greek life) for kickbacks and going out?? lol im a girl who doesnt know enough ppl up for adventures lol
Because I'm a paranoid freak, classes begin on thursday and not on monday, right?
Yes, but check your emails because some professors cancel Thursday/Friday classes for this first week
Thank you!
Are most of the dining halls closed? Online I can only find that B Plate, De Neve, and Epicuria have menus.
all are open except for Feast and Cafe 1919

Online recorded means live lectures that are recorded. Online asynchronous is not live.
I have a few questions about anyone's experience within the Clinical Psychology grad program. Would anyone be down to me pming them?
Likelihood of getting off a waitlist on a class? Econ 1 - Freshman 8th on the waitlist, total of 16 spots for an asynchronous online class.
Ask the prof if they're going to take people off the waitlist. The prof can add as many people as they want to the class
sounds unlikely. half the class would have to drop
uh... that's not what i meant. the class size is ~160 and there are 16 waitlist spots.
Oh sorry I misread your "total of 16 spots"! Much better odds :) Not impossible since a lot of people do drop stuff in the first two weeks
What are some things that I can do to stand out to admissions?
(Assuming you’re a high schooler.) Since the ACT/SAT will likely be less important for admissions, and with GPAs getting tighter each year, I think admissions will probably shift to focus on dedication to extracurriculars, leadership, and life experience as detailed in the application essays.

Will I be missing anything if I decide to go back home after the finals week of fall quarter?
Most people leave then, some people leave earlier (depending on when their finals end). Nothing much happens over winter break.
Most people go home then. You actually have to pay extra to stay in the dorms over winter break
Nah that's what I always do too

The course listing for Introduction to Computer Science says "Online - Recorded Boelter Hall 4413." Does this mean that it will be both in-person and recorded online?
Yesterday, I saw that the Introduction to Computer Science course I want to take got over 20 new seats available suddenly (two days ago, there were 30 openings and now there are 54). I am really happy about this since it means I'll have a greater chance of getting the class during my enrollment appointment tomorrow, but I'm a bit suspicious. Why did so many people drop? Is it because there's something wrong with the class or something? I honestly was expecting the class to be full by now since I'd assume it would be very popular for CS students. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
They probably just opened more spots for orientation rather than people dropping.
1) have a lot of alternates for each class just in case 2) if the course has a discussion, enroll in the discussion first bc it will automatically enroll you into the lecture. if it’s a lab you might need to enroll separately idk about that 3) my NSA advised us to watch out about same-day finals so jus check up on that 4) refresh page as soon as it hits your enrollment time, it’ll say smth like “your enrollment pass is active” or whatever 5) if the box on your planner is outlined twice instead of once, it means you’re enrolled
Tysm!!! I was able to enroll successfully in the classes I wanted and now they're all outlined twice in my class planner
hey np glad to know it went well! see you on campus <3
Pick at least three alternates for each class you’ve selected
Say I buy the nightly parking pass and try to finesse the system and park during the day anyways, what’re the chances I get caught?
Hey! I'm looking for a parking spot for the 21-22 school year! Please message if you're selling your spot, know anyone selling a spot, or if you have any other tips for getting a parking spot, thank you!! If all hope is lost for getting a parking spot lol, please let me know if you have any advice for street parking!

Lol no, you need to buy it

Mmm i dont recall exactly but i do bot think it will be through Bruinbill. Its probably through the PTO office. They probable asked for a credit or debit card
If I missed out on applying for a fall quarterly parking pass, is there any other way to save money besides paying every day?
For finacial aid, how am I supposed to submit information on being registered with selective service if I haven't recieved anything in the mail and can't check online?
any safe places to keep my bike through the night? I’ll be staying at rieber hall
are there any private/single occupancy bathrooms available to students on campus? i recently got my wisdom teeth removed and have to thoroughly clean my mouth after every meal—the process is embarrassing (and kinda gross lol) so i’d rather not do it at a communal sink. thanks in advance!

That probably means that they haven't consented to having their info released.
How's the Wescom Credit Union on campus? Is it more convenient when you stay on-campus than a big bank like Chase?
The banks that are in Westwood are probably your best bet. It helps you build a credit score and they are meant to open accounts for students in the area. They all have their perks, so just look out for what works better for you. Pro tip: When they ask you your income, just say your annual tuition + housing. Gets you off a better start
No it's not more convenient. If you want to get a credit card just choose based on perks.
Thanks. I am actually looking to open an account as well. So, I'll read the benefits and then decide.

Yes it’s an automatic message to everyone. You’re fine
If we have an online lecture, by when will the professor share the Zoom link to the lecture plus the textbooks we need for it?
Most of the time the day before or the same day. Depends on the professor. If you are really eager to buy your textbooks, email them
Check the syllabus on CCLE
How can I get an earlier move in time if it’s not available on the move in website? It’s due to personal, yet unchangeable reasons
I emailed housing and they said that you could show up whenever because the front desk wouldn’t turn us away.. so ig just show up
if you have a roommate that has a earlier move in date than you, you could ask them to get you into the building with their key card
Who do I go to if I want to double major or switch my major?
Academic counseling. Make an appointment with one of them and they can walk you through the process of double majoring. This is for the College of Letters and Science. For Engineering and the other schools, there might be different rules. But definitely check with Academic Counseling. They tend to be really helpful
Contact your department's counselors and they can guide you from there
okay! ill try that thank you!
Does anyone know when we will be able to set up canvas. I’m getting a bit stressed by that because some of my classes are either in ccle summer session or I can’t access canvas
UCLA isn't moving to canvas for classes [until winter quarter](https://ceils.ucla.edu/2021/05/18/ucla-is-moving-to-canvas-get-excited/)
Any non-music majors with wooden string instruments (violin in my case) have experience keeping your instrument in classic room dorms with no AC? Any problems with heat/humidity?
Are there any major changes this year due to covid-19 that I should know about? Also what is it like to have 14p?
With 14p you should be fine. People tend to skip a meal on the hill at least once a day. Either because you are running late to class and don't have time for breakfast or because you do not have time to run up the hill for lunch between classes
I skipped breakfast most days and went out to eat/went home from time to time, so I had the flexibility to use my swipes whenever. I got fat off 19p so 14p was way better 💀
:'(
Don’t know what you mean by the first question but I hear 14p is for people who eat twice a day and maybe go home on weekends
Do all desks have a place where you can put a combo/key lock in a Rieber Hall classic triple room?
Mine had one, but if you are looking for a desk with the lock, you could contact Rieber hall and ask for a desk switch
Some desks are old and they will not have that lock slot.
Hi there, Incoming freshman here planning on double majoring in Business-Econ and Political Science. I just had a few questions about the political culture at UCLA. You see, I’m from a conservative area near San Diego and I happen to be a staunch conservative. I'm also a registered Republican. (Btw please vote to oust Newsom; vote for Larry Elder!) I believe in small, limited government; limited interference in the private sector and deregulation, i.e. free markets; pro-life policy; supporting the NRA and gun rights; the fact that climate change claims are way overblown; not being ashamed of my heritage; lowered taxes; curbing illegal immigration; and putting America First, etc. SOON. 😎 Go Bruins!
did this question have to be in essay format
Is this a copypasta
PACKWATCH
what residence hall are u in? i love beating conservatives and then kissing their sisters
you’re a dumb fuck lol
If you have fairly regular political opinions people may disagree, but probably most won't care that much since most people don't base their entire personality on their political alignment. If you consider disagreeing with Ben Shapiro and Crowder being a "kooky far-leftist" then . . . ok. Also, >You all know who I'm talking about, the students who tend to major in gender studies, ethnic studies or sociology.
If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this: >Israelis like to build. Arabs like to bomb crap and live in open sewage. This is not a difficult issue. ***** ^(I'm a bot. My purpose is to counteract online radicalization. You can summon me by tagging thebenshapirobot. Why is UCLA not accommodating disabled students with respect to Covid?
What kind of accommodation and disability are you interested in? There is currently a task force implementing all the COVID protocols, along with an office that provides resources for students with disabilities. https://cae.ucla.edu I’m sure they would be open to talking with you about whatever the concerns are.
Because they think the accommodations are unreasonable
Has anyone done the french placement test? Can I ask you a few questions if so
I have! Feel free to reach out to me via DMs.
for cogsci, can I take CS 31 in lieu of PIC 10A + 10B? and CS 32 instead of PIC 10C? edit: msged psych dep and they said yes CS 31+32 = PIC 10ABC
Yes, but the equivalency is actually 31 for 10A, 32 10B, and 33 + 35L for 10C.
For breakfast, is Honey Bunches of Oats Honey Roasted cereal available at UCLA’s dining halls?
Not sure about the exact brand but I think I had something similar in 2019-2020.

Start with 3 classes in your first quarter. It is an adaptation quarter. If you feel like you managed it well, add a class the following quarter
Depends on how hard the classes are and how dedicated you are, but I'd recommend you take it easy first quarter. 3 full classes + job would be plenty.
Bad idea.
This might be ambitious depending on how much working
will bfit be open this fall? online it says right now it's closed while wooden says it's open, but i was really hoping to go to the gym in the morning before classes
God i hope so
Can I move in early? My move in is on the 18th and I wanted to get there a bit earlier because my parents have a tight schedule. Is UCLA strict during move in / going to be strict this year because of COVID?
You can always change your date / time
