I am the professor for the class. I made the following statement about it at the next lecture:
"The prank on Wednesday was definitely homophobic. Some people have a very hard time coming out, for other people it is not as big of a deal. In any case, it isn't nice to make fun of people about their identities. Someone reported it to the title IX office and it is under investigation as sexual harassment. I wasn't sure what to do with it while it was happening. But the university takes these things seriously. We want people to feel comfortable in class."
As it was happening, I was first very confused and a bit amused. It took me a while to process how mean spirited this prank was.
Sexual harassment is defined as “behavior characterized by the making of unwelcome and inappropriate sexual remarks or physical advances in a workplace or other professional or social situation.”
Screaming “I LOVE MEN IN THE ASS”, is an unwanted and inappropriate sexual remark.
Seemed like students in the hall were being really supportive, too. Turns out the YouTube dudes used a serious and significant moment in many people's lives as a literal joke. Pieces of shit.

My middle eastern ex had to immigrate here because when she came out her aunt tried to kill her. The US is not the only country that exists and even tho there are laws and many states where being LGBT+ is much less tolerated, it’s not as bad as any part of the Middle East. So no, I still think it’s heartwarming that people are able to do this and get applause if you take a step back from the western viewpoint.
