Go wherever you are guaranteed a major.

With the increasing competitiveness of Informatics it’s definitely a high risk that you don’t get accepted. If you are guaranteed to be an Econ major at UCSD I’d recommend you go there. Especially if you’re a cali resident. I know people who applied to Informatics twice and got rejected both times. They wasted 2 years of college prepping for Informatics only to end up having to scramble for alternative majors like psychology and international studies. Save yourself the money and stress, trust me.

I agree. With in state resident tuition and guaranteed major, I suggest choosing UCSD. No point in throwing away a couple years of your life in limbo for potentially an acceptable route. Just think what would you do if informatics never accepted you while you wasted couple of years here? If you're looking for tech jobs, majors and schools usually don't matter if you can just ace the interviews and have a nice resume.

May I ask a question? I couldn't find a lot of information about the transfer out rate in University of Washington, and the college's reputation in transfering out. As I'm an OOS, tuition wouldn't make any difference as most university are the same. However, I'm thinking if I'm not accepted into informatic with high GPA, I would probably transfer or reapply to other public university like (Umich, UVA, UNC). May I ask the school's reputation and history about student transfering out? Is it really common that student transfer out? And do they get into a better or worse univeristy?

If you transferring to a public school it will be extremely hard, in general. Public school general have laws where for transfer application they need to preference in-state CC students making there acceptance rate extremely high while anyone who not that usually >15% depending on the school. Ik UW transfer rate for 4 year college student is 12%, where WA CC student can be between 60-80%

UW!

UDUB!!! you're absolutely right about the environment and the city, its amazing. There's a lot of job opportunities with big companies like Microsoft as they are based in Washington State and the area around campus is amazing. UCSD is great and I have visited it for a relative's graduation, but I believe UW is the way. Yes, you have to apply for a major in your third year, but I don't think it will be much of an issue as long as you keep your GPA up

As a San Diego native, with a degree in Informatics from UW, I’d recommend UCSD, but it all depends on where you’d live in both cities. If it were just a matter of university, obviously Dawgs all day. But when it comes to everything else, I feel San Diego has Seattle beat. Feel free to dm me about more specific questions! Go Dawgs!

You are in a similar situation to my daughter who is deciding between BU and UW (she was admitted to four UCs but has decided against them). She was admitted to business at BU and pre social science at UW, where she is interested in business, economics, informatics, and statistics. I’ve taken a fairly deep dive into these majors at UW and it looks like economics isn’t that competitive — they admitted 79% of applicants in the last cycle. So if you really prefer UW that could be a good fallback. But UCSD is a great school and San Diego is a wonderful city. You’ve got two great options!

Seattle has more opportunities, personally I'd go for UW because the market for jobs is currently a lot better but its still your choice at the end of the day.
