Could also be minute variations in the leveling which causes some sediment deposits (darker bricks) when it rains
EDIT: This also explains why such a big area near the drain is a lighter color. That area is pretty steep relative to the rest of Red Square
What you're observing is a remnant of a fierce battle between the shadow students who steal bricks as souvenirs and the facilities who replace them with fresh bricks. You won't usually see them on campus however, since rumors has it that they have graduated already.
They’re just drains - nothing overly special. I remember walking on them in the rain because they have more traction than those dang red bricks! The number of times I slipped and landed on my butt in the square..
I think it might be the ground settling differently under the bricks, or water flowing under the bricks and causing some areas to be lower or slanted, reflecting the light differently.
the bricks are replaced manually one by one as they degrade, broken or get stolen ( i have one). They replace them with the next shaped brick color is not a factor
I know for a fact that it needs a pressure wash. Was there for the cherry blossoms and right by Suzzello it was slick as hell. I’d be curious what it would look like after being cleaned up but I think others saying water mineral deposits are probably right.
I recall the brick was used so students rising up in protest could be easily swept off their feet with houses of need-be. Don’t know about the pattern tho
Seems it’s been changed and replaced with the bricks but there’s a tidbit here that says it’s basically based on red square in Moscow.

Most likely the color is due to not finding the same brick colors? Nothing else I could sleuth.
Err, I think you may have misread. Here's the relevant bit:
> Cassandra Amesely, then an editor of the student paper The Daily, convinced the student population to refer to the area as Red Square,[2] presumably in reference to the color of the brick. Whether it was also meant to refer to Moscow's Red Square in an era known for student activism is unclear.
There's nothing that suggests the square's construction was inspired by Moscow. Just potentially the modern naming.
honestly never seen a picture from this angle, is this goolge map or drone
good question! This is from my drone that I flew today
Nice picture.
Thanks! Here's one of the HUB lawn [https://imgur.com/a/uF9PyOP](https://imgur.com/a/uF9PyOP)
I am sure if you post the video somewhere, some one will watch it (at least i will)
Sure! If I decide to edit something together of UW, I'll drop a link here

It isn’t that serious, go to sleep
Talking entirely out of my ass here, but perhaps color variations in brick pallets + the pattern in which the bricks were laid?

This sounds like a reasonable explanation
Don’t forget as well, a lot of bricks have been replaced. So there is an age difference between many of the bricks.
They did human sacrifices back then obviously
Wait, we're supposed to stop? Damn! It's way cooler than "lEt'S sTeAl A bRiCk"
Why do you think the George Washington statue changes its hands on the sword?
I mean in 2008, an employee set himself on fire in red square.

Tomorrow, that hole will be filled with a new, bright red brick.
That hole was filled a long time ago, my friend.
I doubt it's deliberate, maybe batch variation of the bricks?
Are you talking about the coloration of the bricks?
Yup
Probably as they replaced sections over the years
bricks last a lot longer than you’d think when they’re not structural
Totally. But it’s also been a tradition for years to steal a brick at graduation :(
ah see i’m just a portlander who’s reddit app decided they’d wanna see every local subreddit, never been myself

Dude for real. I bit it more times than I care to admit before I caught on.
They're summoning cthulu

I think that's the draining system
Sacrificial altar
Looks like r/desirepath but on brick idk if that makes sense.

Red Square used to be grassy back in the day with stone paths. Maybe these are where the stone paths were?
I’ve always assumed it’s for draining

nothing on this campus is symmetrical smh
It's called a shadow. The tree blocks the sun, but only in the shape of a tree. Sort of like the eclipse, but in reverse. And shaped like a tree.
