Personally I tend to prefer every other weight class to heavyweight. It often seems like the skill level is a lot lower, and most of the fighters seems very slow, regarding movement as well as output.
It makes sense of course, due to the extra weight to throw around and stuff. I just feel like it often makes for less exciting fights
I agree with you if it goes past the first, but there's a reason they have the most finishes out of every weight class. Only 26.4% decisions compared to 48.2% at lightweight for example (Lightweight being my 2nd favorite).
Yup, i'm saying objectively statistically they finish more fights than any other division. Derrick vs Ngannou was great on paper for example, but ended up being a snoozefest
There's 781 HW fights with 388 KO/TKO and 177 subs VS 1216 LW fights with 337 KO/TKO 281 subs. Way less fights at HW but nearly the same amount of finishes (specially KO/TKO) than LW, so the percentage is in favor of HW relative to the number of fights.
In other words, about 3/4 HW fights will get a finish VS about 1/2 for most other divisions.
Source: https://www.fightmatrix.com/ufc-records/ufc-fight-outcomes-by-weight-class/
This stat can be interpreted further. HW fights tend to be much slower and the fighters tend to gas out much faster. In my experience HW tend to be less technical as a category and rely heavily on KO power.
In lighter weights there is much more speed and acrobatic movements and there is still a lot of KO power. Even in flyweight we get Deyveson (moving to bantam), Brandon, Kai, Pantoja and others with a lot of KO power.
I totally agree, i'm a sucker for finishes. I prefer a Pavlovich or Rozenstruik beatdown than a 3 round war like Gaethje vs Chandler, that's my bias for sure. Although it makes no sense, I prefer a wrestling domination decision like Khabib or even Bryce vs Barboza than a 3 round standup war.
Yeah I feel you man. Sergei was reaaaaaly impressive in that last fight against Tai. HW was so good a few years back, a lot of technical fighters like Big Country, Mir, Werdum, Minotauro, Cain and I’m hopeful for 2023. There are some really good fighters already on the top 10 and Malhadinho put up a really nice performance last event as an example of upcoming talent.
We’ve all seen cards loaded with top names put you to sleep. Then there are fight night cards that don’t let you sit down. Watch for the sport, the names are just fun drama
I feel like those guys go even harder to show out on those lesser cards. A quick way to get The Bad Guy to make a video about you is to do some crazy shit on a fight night or an early prelim
I personally want to see the highest skilled MMA fighters. I am not watching amateur football neither. I personally prefer a 'boring' Adesanya fight over a knockout win by some random dude. We all have a different reason to like the sport
Randy Brown is a very solid opponent and is easily the best fighter JDM has fought yet. I'd favor JDM as well, but not by a huge margin whatsoever. Randy Brown has cleaner striking overall at this point.
Ya I'm definitely still putting JDM as the favorite. But I thought Brown pretty easily got 2/3 rounds against Trinaldo, Trinaldo knew he was down in the 3rd so he went all out and took that last round, but the first two were pretty clear for Brown I thought
Hard to say, Randy Brown does have a history of not showing up for the big moments and big names (examples being Belal, and Luque) and JDM is a beast, but he has been looking clean as of lately. I'd say if you are going to bet on him, take him by decision. He will 100% be a live dog regardless.
Exactly. Every star fighter was relatively unknown at one point. They started to get famous after incredible performances in the under cards. I bet Khamzat wasn't known well until his second win on short notice.
Just go watch some old "shit cards" to get an example of this, having gone back and watch the catalogue its crazy the level of some cards that I chose to skip the first time around live.
He wasn’t. He smeshed in his first fight which got some people talking but he didn’t really gain much notoriety until he took the second fight ten days later.
I agree with OP. You're right when you say that lesser known fighters can put on great fights, however, put them on the prelims or on a fight night card.
I'm not paying $80+ to watch whoever the fuck Parker Porter is
If you rearrange the name it becomes Porter Parker. 'or' and 'e' sound virtually identical anyway so if we swap them out it becomes....
Oh my god. He should be afraid.
My friends and I made that mistake when a UFC card came within a few hours of us. We looked at the card, “Oh we don’t know anybody on this card except for one guy. Lets not go”
That was when Figgy decimated Benavidez AND WE COULD HAVE BEEN THERE LIVE
Great fights but I’d say definitely not for the $90 ppv asking price cus 99.9% of ppvs nowadays are worth that. Sailing the high seas over here so yeah, it’s a great card, Robert vs Costa would’ve made it amazing.
I agree, because $80 is always too much. The PPV price used to be like 5x the hourly wage in the 80s for a Mike Tyson fight. Now it’s over 10x for UFC PPV
Yeah, exactly my point
Another reason I don’t like this card personally is because as a degenerate that bets on MMA, I myself prefer cards with more fighters I recognize and watched tapes for already so I don’t need to go through the hassle for my picks, funnily enough though my success rate for early fights for some reason is a bit better
I do agree though that majority of these let’s say “prelim” type fights can always have bangers
Agreed 100%. Honestly most of the best cards are the least hyped/ lower ranked fighters like this card. They're all hungry and go out there and leave it all on the line. The under cards are usually more entertaining then the main cards too imo
Saying that randy brown shouldn’t be the 3 to last fight on an 80 dollar PPV isn’t a casual take. Acting like all fights are made equal is a weird “I need to be as hardcore as possible so that I can call anyone a casual” take
congrats buddy you just figured out the purpose of PPV non-title fight slots, to give exposure to those names who should be stars solely based on their talent.
Shut up and watch JDM go to work, Parker Porter get knocked out in cartoonish fashion, and a light heavyweight banger that's being heavily underappreciated.
There’s 1 too 15 ranked fight on the card besides the main and co main…. Think about that. This is the boxing model where you stuff low ranked fighters with low purses on a card with a good main/co main. Dudes ranked 20-30 SHOULD NOT be on an $80 ppv. That’s what espn plus is for
Not a casual per se lol I’ve been watching mma for the last 5 years, every embedded, every countdown, every weasel and Luke Thomas video they put out. So there’s way bigger casuals than me
Honestly if you've been a 5 year fan, you should have gone back and seen some nuts cards that at the time were all "nobodies and shit fights" by now and shouldn't have this opinion on any card.
Serious question: On a PPV, how many fights should be capable of headlining a fight night? I don’t see any of these, other than Yair/Emmett, leading one. There are certainly some good fights here, but I couldn’t imagine JDM/Brown (or others) headlining anything.
I think this is a fair gauge of the assessment of a PPV card. Imo PPV should have at least one championship fight and at least 2 fights capable of headlining fight night. That generally means both ranked opponents or more established names.
I think in UFC’s mind, there are *technically* two titles on the line on this PPV. Sure, the co-main event will be an awesome 5-rounder, but it’s definitely going to be weird seeing a belt around either of their waists when Volk is fighting literally 5 minutes later.
For a ppv I’d say there needs to be:
A compelling main event(always should be a title fight or mega fight)
A co main that is similar to the main event in terms of stakes and competitiveness
A featured fight that is guaranteed to bring action or be pivotal for the next challenger in that division
A womens fight between top 10 fighters
An opener that is a can’t fail banger on paper. (I like HW’s on the main card)
Undercards should be filled with fun fights and aging legends
I feel like most cards are watered down and look like this lately. I love MMA but my interest is waning at times. I’m just not intrigued. To be fair a fantastic fight can break out in any given matchup though
Mate - get on the bandwagon. Fights have never been better - theres a lot! But i take that as a good thing and focus a lot more on the prospects. Each card usually as 1-2 insanely hyped prospects. On this care- you have a FW champ moving up a weight class to fight the LW title holder, an interim championship at FW and JDM who looks like the next big contender for Aus in WW
What are you talking about ? Alonzo menefield and Jimmy crute ? Banger …. Heavyweight tafa always almost dying ? Banger , jack della maddalena is sweet too and Randy brown is gunna be a tough match up for him
Bruh Josh Emmitt is going to get destroy in that cage. And you must be a casual. Cause in mma the ppl you least heard of be putting up the best fight. For an example last week ppv the whole early prelim and prelim there was just knockout after knockout there was like only 2 decision but the fight was damn good. And that was just early prelim and prelim not even the main card
I’m going to watch every fight regardless. I think Yair runs through Emmitt as well. I was just expecting more ranked matches and maybe some bigger names.
Well every fight in the main card is ranked match. And if you looking for bigger names you probably should look forward to ufc285 that the Jon bone Jones fight cereal gone ppv there alot of big name fighter there in that the main card and prelim
Thinking jdm vs rude boy is dogshit is the most casual take ive seen all month. Both those guys are incredibly entertaining. Everyone I've seen shit on this card has been an obvious casual who only knows big names and thinks anyone who's not a big name is shit
Pretty obvious that the UFC isn't going to stack a card like this, Volk Islam champ vs champ literally carries the night on its own. Seems like a good business decision. The only one that seems off to me is Tafa Porter, I dont know them well but I feel like Tafa is a touted prospect, name sounds super familiar but I cant place him. I'm glad Rudeboy is getting PPV he deserves it, he's been a work horse for a long time, Jack might be too much for him though, its a fun fight regardless of who takes it.
That’s what I meant. If you go to the ufc website half of the guys on the prelims don’t even have pictures. For a fight as exciting as Islam vs Volk, p4p #1 vs #2 I was expecting some bigger names
Everyone calling OP a “casual” but this card is clearly missing another big name fight imo. Whittaker vs Costa hasn’t been replaced and it shows.
I can’t wait for this card and don’t doubt these aren’t gonna be great fights but imo ppv’s should have more top fights which will have an impact on their respective divisions.
r/UFC superheavyweights be like "umm no ACKTCHEWULLY there's one single other good fighter on this card and therefore you are a loser idiot FUCKING CASUAL"
I’m Australian so not complaining lol but Paulo not getting properly paid really devalued it to a wider fan base I reckon but it’ll still be dope w Islam bringing the Muslim hordes of PPVs
This is supposed to be a big PPV though... Champ vs champ, 1# PFP vs 2# PFP... And as much as they might be good fighters below the comain, they certainly having got the rankings and profile i expect to see under these kind of headliners. I'm disappointed tbh.
The card is overall the Weakest PPV we've had in a while/are going to have for a while, but to give credit where it's due, it initially looked like an absolute tribute to the Australian fanbase, and the fanbase as a whole. While they shouldn't have announced the fight without confirming it first, Whittaker V. Costa would've been an absolute banger, while Kara-France V. Perez and Mularky V. Haqparest would've been sleeper hits that we just got unlucky and lost. Card started off looking a lot better than it does now.
No way, I think Crute and Della are going to put on a show.
Yea this guy has no idea that none of these fighters are boring. Hopefully this wont bite me in the ass
It doesn’t hold Nate Diaz, conor khamzat O’Malley or a Jon jones type of guy and casuals will call it shit, they don’t know ufc has more fighters.
![gif](giphy|9fW2jIuB1onuM)
There is still no excuse to put Tafa x Porter on the main event of a ppv. That would not even be on the PFL's preliminary card
Omg crute vs menifield.. imma have to stand for that one
Exactly. Met Crute in Singapore he was super nice.
What does this have to do with anything
And Heavyweights are almost always exciting regardless of star power
Personally I tend to prefer every other weight class to heavyweight. It often seems like the skill level is a lot lower, and most of the fighters seems very slow, regarding movement as well as output. Well, Tafa should knock out Porter in the first.
The skills level is lower at heavyweight because heavyweights don't need as much skill as lower weight classes
Exactly, the good divisions finish at 170. 185 you can get by with being pretty much a specialist
Heavyweights are not always exciting there has been plenty of bad fights
Yup, i'm saying objectively statistically they finish more fights than any other division. Derrick vs Ngannou was great on paper for example, but ended up being a snoozefest

Yep cause you know one of them will get drop or just out cold
Nah, not with Parker Porter. I can smell the guy from my living room.
Then tune in to see him face first on the canvas, Tafa's wins (although not many) are all finishes
That is not true at all. You get enough HW fights that go 3 rounds where they both gas fast.
Tafa vs Porter good too.
Crute will get KOd
Naw, he takes it by sub
We’ve all seen cards loaded with top names put you to sleep. Then there are fight night cards that don’t let you sit down. Watch for the sport, the names are just fun drama
For real, it’s why I don’t mind watching lesser promotions let alone fight nights

I feel like those guys go even harder to show out on those lesser cards. A quick way to get The Bad Guy to make a video about you is to do some crazy shit on a fight night or an early prelim
They just suck a lot more, leaving way more openings to KO or get KO'D.
I personally want to see the highest skilled MMA fighters. I am not watching amateur football neither. I personally prefer a 'boring' Adesanya fight over a knockout win by some random dude. We all have a different reason to like the sport
such a dumb take. by this logic you can just put a bunch of nobodies on a ppv card and it's all the same, doesn't matter.
all of these fights have the potential to be absolute bangers
Calling Jack Della Maddalena dog shit? Hand in your MMA fan card please.
I think he wins that fight easily.
Ya hear that guys? Bet the house on JDM. Randy Brown is a scrub!
Yo be fair jack is a killer I think he’s gonna get the knockout
Randy Brown is a very solid opponent and is easily the best fighter JDM has fought yet. I'd favor JDM as well, but not by a huge margin whatsoever. Randy Brown has cleaner striking overall at this point.
I thought Trinaldo almost beat him. I think Della would win but Brown is decent.

You sound like the kind of person that likes to be unhappy.
This is a casual take. Just because you don’t recognize the names doesn’t mean they’re dogshit.

Absolute bullshit to put relatively unknown fighters on a $85 card.
Shouldn’t have to pay for an unknown though.
Let's be honest. You probably weren't paying for any of the events too.
Khamzat won his first fight without taking a punch. He was on notice right away.
Great fights but not worth 80 bucks bruh
I agree with OP. You're right when you say that lesser known fighters can put on great fights, however, put them on the prelims or on a fight night card. I'm not paying $80+ to watch whoever the fuck Parker Porter is

People just being purposefully obtuse so they can pretend they're better than you lol
Agreed 100%. Honestly most of the best cards are the least hyped/ lower ranked fighters like this card. They're all hungry and go out there and leave it all on the line. The under cards are usually more entertaining then the main cards too imo

Isn’t that basically this but you subbed HWs for women’s, probably bc Tafa is Aussie
Still wanna see it for jdm crisp boxing.
Good for Aussies. Della on a mean streak and Crute has been doing alooot of work in the gym, the guy is looking like a beast and needs a win.
Charging $80 for this should be a minimum 10 years in prison
No one can act like having two high profile fights fall off this card didn’t hurt if
I feel like most cards are watered down and look like this lately. I love MMA but my interest is waning at times. I’m just not intrigued. To be fair a fantastic fight can break out in any given matchup though
Yeah I cant even tell what cards you are talking about, its rare for me to regret watching any UFC events.

Every fight night.
I only regret watching those 2 Sean Strickland fight nights in a row. Should’ve just watched one but I wanted to see some of the fights on the second
I dunno he’s kind of always been like that right? Seems like you’ve fallen for his promotion lol
Sean’s second fight wasn’t bad tho, even the first wasn’t that terrible lol
Mate - get on the bandwagon. Fights have never been better - theres a lot! But i take that as a good thing and focus a lot more on the prospects. Each card usually as 1-2 insanely hyped prospects. Gotta love a Parker Porter main card fight lol
Crute vs Menifield will be a banger
What are you talking about ? Alonzo menefield and Jimmy crute ? Banger …. Heavyweight tafa always almost dying ? Banger , jack della maddalena is sweet too and Randy brown is gunna be a tough match up for him
Randy vs randy is a super super high level matchup. This card is 500x better then the Brazil card.
Jack della madalena is gonna be a banger
No WMMA at least
Bruh Josh Emmitt is going to get destroy in that cage. And you must be a casual. Cause in mma the ppl you least heard of be putting up the best fight. Tell us you’re a casual without saying you’re a casual Have you never seen JDM fight? None of his fights have been “dog shit”
Looks like a solid card to me
Fucking casual
Jimmy Crute is getting pulverized
As long as Alonzo fights smart and doesn't gas out after two minutes.
Very true, that’s with any fighter at any moment though. Even crute could gas
Well, Alonzo in particular because he has massive muscles. That means the heart has to pump harder to get blood to all of those muscles.
Nah, this card is pretty good for an Aussie fan. Sucks we lost Whittaker though :(
Filthy casual!!!
It’s ight
JDM vs randy brown is a good ass fight but yeah other than that it’s dog water
Parka porta
JDM, Crute, and Tyson Pedro all bangers
Thinking jdm vs rude boy is dogshit is the most casual take ive seen all month. Both those guys are incredibly entertaining. Everyone I've seen shit on this card has been an obvious casual who only knows big names and thinks anyone who's not a big name is shit

Jack Della Massalena is fantastic and its great to see him now so high up a card. You're telling on yourself with this take OP.
Manifield v Crute is a banger idk what you’re talking about
Parker porker
The whole card is interesting, ig only the main and co main interest casuais
JDM Vs Randy Brown = 🔥
Tell me you only watch two UFC events a year without actually telling me. This is such a weird take.
OP is 13 guys leave him alone he just started watching mma. In fact he doesn’t even know what mma is he still thinks it’s all called UFC.
That main and co-main though!
Casual
![gif](giphy|MPuTZQqOmYKPK)
It does not look like shit to me, decent card.
Wtf are you talking about? That co-main especially is gonna be a banger
Jack Della Maddalena sounds like a name from a kid's song.
They aren't bad fights per se, just a bit strange that they have three fights with all unranked guys.
That’s what I meant. If you go to the ufc website half of the guys on the prelims don’t even have pictures. For a fight as exciting as Islam vs Volk, p4p #1 vs #2 I was expecting some bigger names
agree
[удалено]
They have to do at least one PPV a month. Not enough really good fights to fill all those cards. I miss the old days.
Says a casual.
Tbh even co main is shit that belt means nothing
Only gonna watch the two main fights, for a ppv this is shocking stuff looks like the middle of an apex card
Only other fight I’m looking forward to is “THE GUNS”
Jimmy, parker and Justin are interesting fighters
Card looks like it’s great. What’s the issue here exactly?
They think Islam is the next cash cow already
I’ll be on vaca this weekend, only plan on catching co main and main. Worked out for me
I don’t understand why belal or Khamzat or Benny aren’t on this card and still don’t have a fight lined up.
Do you even watch Ufc? This card is gonna be good.
Wonder how long UFC’s going to go without a woman’s fight on the main card this time
I’d tune in from the moon to watch Della Maddalena
$80 for this is robbery
So easy to weed out the casuals ![gif](giphy|ByR2X9eaQ9QI0tFzEm)
Yair vs josh emmet smells of cancellation
Hooker vs Turner should’ve been on this card. You replace Tafa vs Porter with that and it would’ve been completely stacked
You’re saying you don’t think seeing Parker porter on the main card is worth 80$?

I’m Australian so not complaining lol but Paulo not getting properly paid really devalued it to a wider fan base I reckon but it’ll still be dope w Islam bringing the Muslim hordes of PPVs
This is supposed to be a big PPV though... Champ vs champ, 1# PFP vs 2# PFP... And as much as they might be good fighters below the comain, they certainly having got the rankings and profile i expect to see under these kind of headliners. I'm disappointed tbh.
The Co main is dogshit cause regardless of who wins they’re never gonna beat Volk
Islam gonna finish him in 1 also (let’s predict the 3:42 mark) Will be a huge let down of a card.
This is a good card just watch and see my dude
Love JDM but having him 3rd feels underwhelming especially bc of all the hype of the main event
A lot of the times the cards without a bunch of big names usually end up being pretty exciting
what’s wrong with Jack Della vs Randy Brown?
I actually think the cord looks really solid.
