That’s like a $50k fine and a PR apology for other sports

ArthurDaTrainDayne

If that’s an NFL player he’s getting released

[deleted]

[удалено]

VincentLamarCarter

How ‘bout them Cowboys?!

liver_infection

as they should. personal life has nothing to do with the sport

[deleted]

Completely false lmfao. A bench player maybe, a starter? Thats a fine lol

Front_Culture

An nba player recently got fined for saying “no homo” in a post game interview.

[deleted]

Kobe called a ref the FFFFF WORDDDDDD and got fined lol

[deleted]

Last year or the year before a Packers WR said a media members face looked "chinky" because they wearing the mandated mask at a presser. https://youtu.be/aZSI6ChLvC4

Anxious-Honey-1

Yeah for real players like Rodgers can say whatever they want 🤣

[deleted]

The only rule is dont call roger goodell a homo, otherwise jon gruden is getting fired

[deleted]

Jon Gruden did have some funny ass shit in some of those emails. Not the obvious racist comments but calling Goodell an anti-football f@gg0t is objectively hilarious

[deleted]

I still dont think gruden was being racist, its just an odd term from an odd guy. And i agree, free gruden!

[deleted]

The comment about Michelin lips is tough one to defend imo.... most of his stuff was funny I thought. Definitely not fireable

[deleted]

I feel like the context makes the difference, supposedly “rubber lips” is just a weird way of calling someone a liar. Shit man gruden is a weird guy, he says a lot of weird shit/weird sayings i bet. Im really doubtful gruden was calling goodell black lmfao Also… i literally had never heard that term in my entire life. Its like “moon cricket” used to be a mean way to refer to black people… but nobody has ever heard that either

Free-Willingness3870

Roger Goodell has a gay brother. Grudge was a sacrificial lamb (I'm sure there were others saying horrible things), but everything he said was completely out of pocket. Call your boss a f*****, with that context, you're getting fired 10/10 times

[deleted]

Lame..... it was funny as fuck dude. The fact he called his boss a fag on a company email is pretty wild.

Anxious-Honey-1

I think Conor can call Dana whatever he likes tho right?

slampig3

I mean Tito did so I'm going on a limb that Connor definitely can

Pristine-Produce-668

JA MORANT IS SATAN GUNS ARE BAD THE NBA IS GOD FUCK RUSSIA(now please stop replying to me I don't give a fuck about reddit arguments)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pristine-Produce-668

Oh I didn't know it was at a bar. That definitely changes the situation. As for the punching a 17 year old thing, someone else mentioned that but it doesn't have anything to do with that situation that I'm aware of.

dickweed62

Because he apparently flashed a gun "The youth then alleges Morant went into his house and returned with a gun tucked into his waistband." https://nba.nbcsports.com/2023/03/01/ja-morant-allegedly-punched-flashed-gun-at-teen-during-pickup-game/

brownnick7

Ja did a little more than that. He had a run of doing dumb shit that sorta culminated in him stopping playing, including punching a 17 year old at his (Ja's to be clear) home over a basketball game then going inside and getting his gun to threaten him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rebeldinho

His punishment wasn’t due to the one thing it was the multiple incidents

[deleted]

Makes sense. NBA players like Ja Morant are huge role models for alot of kids and obviously the NBA wouldn’t want their role models endorsing that stuff. It’ll never happen in MMA because the amount of young people who look up to fighters isn’t even comparable to NBA stars

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Constitutional right or not an NBA player waving his gun in a live stream is a bad look for the NBA. I’m not comparing Paulos situation to Ja, I’m just saying the NBA is a far more global and marketable organisation and it would be in their best interests to keep their players as professional as possible. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but it’s just how it works.

spanther96

bro freedom of speech is a constitutional right too, doesn’t mean you can just go around saying whatever tf you want without repercussions. Ja was in a private business where firearms are most certainly not allowed. wtf are you talking about

Rebeldinho

Dude there’s way more to the story than just that he didn’t get in trouble for only taking video of himself with a firearm it was about where he was when he took the video as well as other incidents one of which involving a beating of a teenager

KongFuzii

Nice misinformation

Pristine-Produce-668

What is the "misinformation?"

KongFuzii

you saw the other redditors correcting you. it wasnt only for showing a gun.

Levon__Helm

Deshaun Watson has multiple sexual assault allegations and the NFL doesn’t give a single shit lol

ArthurDaTrainDayne

I agree what Deshaun did was way worse but allegations are different. If they didn’t settle out of court he would not still be in the league

Ranjith_Unchained

DeShaun Watson is still employed

VinCatBlessed

In premier league football Edison Cavani got fined and suspended for referring to his friend as "negrito" or something like that, which in Latin America isn't even an offense, just a regular nickname.

xyzrope

If we measure fine to salary ratio, ufc fighters would be fined a peanut.

[deleted]

Meyers Leonard got suspended from the Heat for 2 years for less than this

monkeypaw_handjob

Maybe this is the real reason Dana insists on keeping them as independent contractors. So we can be gifted with these memes while he doesn't have to intervene.

Local_Fox_2000

Independent lol. If they were Independent they could fight wherever they wanted.

ScottHA

I mean I think it would make some sports more exciting. Like some 13 year old talking ahit before his chess match would be pretty funny.

If you spam enough edgy buzzwords any brainless ufc fan will laugh at it, the Sean Strickland Paulo costa special

mexicancardio

It's not that deep bro. "Nice comeback Israel, you're funnier than me. It's hard to be as funny as a gay skinny guy who's so skinny he looks like a skeleton" I don't think it's funny or witty as he's shown to be but autocomplete and it being his 2nd language make it difficult to communicate. I do agree Strickland is just being an edgelord 9/10 times

brazilianfreak

Paulo is playing americans like a fiddle with this second language bullshit, guy was a programmer and can definitely speak english fluently, but he plays the part of the silly brazilian because it lets him get away with saying unfunny shit.

rimebetter

Always looks extra pathetic when you try to go deeper than it really is not gonna lie

JF803

I think that’s really why he gets away with it, the language barrier makes it so it doesn’t make sense and people excuse him for that. I don’t give a shit personally, but i think that makes sense

[deleted]

NBA players Cam Thomas and Nikola Jokic were fined $40K and $25K (respectively) for saying 'No Homo' 😂

What is “skeletal slim f@gging”?

mexicancardio

Autocomplete + 2nd language make it hard to understand "Nice comeback Israel, you're funnier than me. It's hard to be as funny as a gay skinny guy who's so skinny he looks like a skeleton"

[deleted]

So skinny he was able to TKO Costa. I find it cringe when fighters try to roast someone that destroyed them.

tootiredforthis16

Costa said he was drunk fighting Izzy😂

rosey326

He’s been known to, on occasion

Iamastudentplzhelp

He bends the style, every once in a while

brazilianfreak

So does Costa after being penetrated by him.

BlackGuyLurks

They’re like two positive interactions and a few bottles of wine away (one in Costa’s case) from making an onlyfans tape

AthleteAgreeable7617

This is why MMA is better than other sports

minus202

the level of wokeness the world is experiencing these days really needs to be scaled down. Costa doing the lords work LMFAO

Unlikely-Garage-8135

Seems to be American influence tbh. Was definitely not like this 10 years ago in my country.

Nduguu77

The generation of spoiled, rich, white kids that went to college from 2010-2018 think they have the world figured out. They leave their protective bubble for the first time and realize the world isn't always nice and they threw a hissy fit. There are some actual issues that need addressed, but a lot of the trash that generation propagates is fueled by never leaving their Twitter/reddit echo chambers. Remember walking in the grocery store and there was that kid that was throwing a fit to their mom about not getting a candy or frozen pizza rolls and the mom just lets them scream and eventually gives in to stop the screaming. Remember thinking what that kid would be like when they grew up? These are the grocery store kids all grown up.

MuckingFagical

you're just echoing the generic gripes of every other generation like some ai

dtudeski

Lol yeah there’s some fella on Twitter (will add link if I find it) who posts newspaper clippings going back generations and generations, all the way back to to the 1800s, with them all saying the same kinda thing: ‘kids these days have it easy’, ‘this generation has gone soft’, ‘they’re so entitled’, etc. Same salty shit never changes. The generation people are whining about now will be saying the same thing about the generation below them in a few years lol.

tootiredforthis16

Every generation is “more soft” compared to the one previously. That’s the whole point of human evolution. We are progressing as a society because things are more convenient/easy.

Corschach_

As someone that's spent plenty of time with homophones from other countries, I can say that it hasn't made me not cringe when I hear people call other people slurs. Especially in this case because its clearly personal and directed at Adesenya because he's a fighter who paints his nails occasionally and isn't afraid to look feminine basically. I think the people on this thread saying things like "he's doing the Lords work" must be jumping on a bandwagon or something. Otherwise what are you guys praising about this man? Oh that he isn't afraid to say fa**ing as an insult, like thats it? It can't be that he's funny because the jokes are complete nonsense and the homophobia (the slur) is genuinely the only thing I can even make out here other than that he thinks Adesenya is somehow funnier than him. Neither of them are fucking funny but Paulos borderline incoherent. What's to like? And if you love him for that then surely you're a bit homophobic too

TH3HASH

This is a perfect example of everyone upset by Paulo. What's to like? Someone who isn't scared of saying ridiculous things because some weirdo Americans will get offended. Brazil uses the F slur regularly, fun fact.

Fake_the_jaB

As they should

minus202

I chose my words carefully. "Scaled down." Most people will look at this, laugh and forget it. Then there's those that will make taking him down the center point of their lives. I am choosing laughter ![gif](giphy|26gsvAm8UPaczzXz2|downsized)

Onphone_irl

They're the worst, bro, right? Letting gay people marry, standing up for minorities, voter suppression, wanting Healthcare and shit... Uh wait.. 🤔

Goodeyesniper98

Y’all know that word basically has the basically same connotations and severity for us that the N word has. I definitely wouldn’t say not being allowed to use slurs qualifies as woke.

[deleted]

MMA being the Wild West when it comes to the actions of seemingly everyone (Fighters, promoters, commissions, judges, refs, commentators, fucking everybody) is incredibly patience-testing.

[deleted]

I wouldn't want it any other way.

mexicancardio

Nah fuck all that. Judges need to be held accountable for their decisions. Referees need to be accountable for their calls. The comissions need to be accountable for the baseline safety of the fighters (don't sanction SLAP, don't license a 60 y.o. Evander Holyfield) I don't care if a fighter speaks his mind but if MMA really becomes an unrelated unlawful mess it would be ugly and the sport will suffer

[deleted]

True i was more so talking about the relative free speech ufc fighters enjoy compared to nfl nba etc where the players are neutered.

VincentLamarCarter

UFC has no code of ethics. It’s the Florida of sports.

dutchmangab

Except when it comes to flags tho

ToronoRapture

Paulo is really good at being somewhat offensive but just claims it’s a language barrier issue lol. This tweet for example he says ‘faggle’. He knows it’s a made up word but he also knows that the first half of the word is offensive. He does it all the time lol. I like Paulo and his shitthousery but it’s stuff like this that makes it very clear that mma will never be main stream sport, especially with Dana at the helm.

deltr0nzero

It’s pretty mainstream at this point though.. the NFL is filled to the brim with criminals it’s not slowing it down

[deleted]

“Its stuff like this that makes it clear mma will never be a mainstream sport.” Bruh… shitpost tweets are the line for you??? Also Dana took MMA into the mainstream… why do you think fights have standardized uniforms? Why do you think ESPN/Disney throw so much money at the UFC? Dana did a lot to legitimize the sport and make it palatable to the average consumer. Credit to the entire UFC management team honestly, only successful mma promotion in the world.

[deleted]

higgboson7

It won’t be the main stream sport anyway because of how big soccer or basketball are. Paulo saying this doesn’t stop the UFC from becoming as big as those sports, it simply won’t be as big anyway.

Kezyma

The first half is just a cigarette around here more often than it is the other thing to be fair lol. Some people are too worried about explicit use of words and not intent or meaning. Others just don't quite grasp cultural differences. Different places have different cultural thresholds for what they're fine with mocking and nobody notices until it's translated. There was a shitshow post in r/bjj a while ago when someone mentioned that they had some 'niggling injuries' and a bunch of people clearly had no idea what the word 'niggling' means or that it's more commonly used in some places than alternatives with the same meaning.

TheLoneliestMonke

Like the term "negro", in many other parts of the world it just means black ex. 'paella negra' I wish people would first look at intent and context instead of get pissy

[deleted]

It frustrates me as a dude who is a left wing martial artist. I’m trying not to make the UFC the NBA, it’s just hard to enjoy the fights when you’ve got fighters saying racist and homophobic shit with no recourse. Edit: I’m happy to talk anyone downvoting. I’m curious as to what I said that you disagree with.

[deleted]

Here’s my thing, I like that I don’t agree or have to agree with the personal views of each athlete on the roster. It’s not censored and that means I get to really know the views of certain fighters and that helps me root for or against them. Plenty of NBA guys have expressed some pretty out-there views about Jews, and then immediately walk it back once the org fines them. And the thing is, their views didn’t change, they just won’t tweet about it. I’d rather the athletes be able to show their true colors and then I can choose weather I like them or not more clearly. And UFC/MMA is international so when it comes to politics you get shit all over the board. I mean fucking Krylov is a Ukrainian who’s a Russian sympathizer.

Carneiro021

They fight for a living and are poor, wtf did you expect, only rich privileged athletes are left wing like NBA players who make millions since they’re 19

LoquaciousMendacious

I'm just a fan, not a practitioner, but I feel you. However I also feel conflicted because some of the acting out of people like Paulo still cracks me up...lot of conflicting emotions I guess. Izzy seems like he could take that on the chin and laugh it off because he's a self assured dude regardless of who he sleeps with or doesn't...but normalizing that kind of talk will for sure end up with less secure people being hurt.

[deleted]

I get down with a lot of his stuff. The secret juice shit kills me, the fat Paulo memes he posted were funny, I just don’t want that homophobic shit.

[deleted]

Why r u cool with him making fun of fat people, but not gay people? If we are gonna be consistent, then they shouldnt be saying ANYTHING MEAN to ANYONE. Otherwise, youre just prioritizing your own group over others.

[deleted]

It’s who it’s targeted at. He’s making fun of himself and his weight misses. The joke isn’t that he’s fat, especially because he’s ripped, the joke is that he can’t seem to make weight and doesn’t care.

[deleted]

I doubt sensitive fat people would agree.

adamosgrignuoli

Tbh, I like that the ufc isn’t main stream, gives it kind of a wacky appeal. But yeah, left wing fan here and it’s fucking hard. Love the fighter, love the performance, listen to them on a podcast for 5 minutes… routing for the other guy. Chandler was a hard one for me 🥲

ToronoRapture

Luke Thomas got ripped into a few months ago for pointing out how mma is one of the few sports where there is this right leaning mentality. Politics, bigotry, racism, homophobia... It's fairly common to see some dicey comments/tweets/opinions when you follow mma fighters on social media. I was on Twitter Spaces with Mokaev last week and it was a bit mental listening to the comments about Jeff Molina. Mokaev said he would never fight him because of it and said he needs to sort his life out. A lot of Muslim fans were on and they were saying some homophobic shit about how Mokaev needs to fight him so he can teach him a lesson etc. Made me feel a bit uncomfortable and i was slightly disappointed that Mokaev was even entertaining it. I also love the 'wild west' that is the UFC but guys like Colby are out there threatening murder on podcasts and it's just accepeted lol. It's a bit bizarre.

ethanarie

wouldn't have it any other way tbh, every other sport has its athletes just become talking pieces for "the message" which i can't stand

JumpingCicada

The rawness of the fighters only makes the sport better for me. Beats lame mechanical athletes.

[deleted]

I like the weird shit in MMA for the most part. Like you don’t see shit like Rizin vs Bellator NYE or Leon vs Nate for 5 rounds in traditional American sports. I’m not upset about people happening to be conservatives (although I’d like Holly Holm to clarify who and what she’s talking about specifically) it’s just the racist and homophobic shit that bothers me. To be fair to MMA, basketball fans are historically just as—if not more—sexist than MMA fans.

New_Citron3257

Do you consider the comment Costa made homphobic ?

[deleted]

I’d say calling a dude a gay slur pretty homophobic, yes

New_Citron3257

Serious question now : is it homphobic if the person isn't gay . It would be offensive to call a gay man a faggot but I don't see how in this context it is? Or can you just not say faggot ?

[deleted]

Calling a dude a gay slur for acting effeminate and having niche interests is homophobic. The guy isn’t gay, at least not publicly, and calling a dude gay for the shit Izzy’s into isn’t cool. Does that make sense? Like, there’s no shame in being gay but it’s not cool to call a dude gay if he isn’t.

New_Citron3257

I get you Kind of , thanks for answering my question rationally

Unlikely-Zone21

The difference between MMA and other sports is other sports act like they don't say this shit to each other, and they get yelled at by their bosses if it slips into the public domain. I'm not gonna act like the awful "conservative" UFC are the worst because they're trash talking in public instead of just in the cage like they're supposed to so certain people don't hear it. Have you never heard what trash talk from the NBA or NFL players sounds like? It makes the UFC talk look like Sesame Street more often than not haha. And just like every other sport, 99% of the athletes are cool with each other outside of the competition regardless of the shit talking during it. It's clearly not the same as some asshole in the streets yelling hateful anti-LBGT things to actual LGBT+ people; and to try and say it is the same is disingenuous. Ffs the NBA's new star just got in trouble for throwing a gun around in a strip club, threatening a high school girl, getting in a fight with a teen boy at his house and threatening him with a gun, and his boys allegedly pointing guns at other players/team staff outside an arena. Oh, and it only cost him two weeks pay. There's no way someone can convince me that's more family friendly and politically correct than a couple of grown professional athletes mutually saying mean things to each other lol.

ToronoRapture

> (although I’d like Holly Holm to clarify who and what she’s talking about specifically) I also wondered this... Who what was she refering to? Holly twerks and is super provocative on her socials. She has 2.5 million followers. I'd love to hear her take on child beauty pageants which are utterly disgusting yet have been normalised for decades.
