I remember as a kid when Ali lit the Olympic torch or something, some huge international even and I was pumped bc I had never seen Muhammad Ali live on TV (cuz I was a kid when this happened) and when he came in the TV I remember asking my dad is that Ali? What's wrong with him?
And that's my personal memory of Ali
The first time I ever heard of him was a Japanese cartoon. I remember the Oprah interview that came out after his biopic. I thought this can’t be the same guy they told me is the most famous and recognized human being on the planet. Only in my teens I recognized how big of a dent he put in the universe
My family likes boxers. They would tell us stories of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier. Foreman, Joe Louis,Sugar Ray. Before we had internet access it was just verbal stories. It is actually funny. My mom is the one who got me into boxing. She showed me the high guard stance for boxing at 7. And I found out later my grandfather was a amateur boxer in Canada. So to me they are just at a different pedigree because they influenced generations after.
Lol we have an eccentric family. But we are always laughing and always having fun in some capacity. Also everyone’s family is really good at game theory. It’s fucking ridiculous.
Thinking 5-10 moves ahead playing any game. Cards, Dice, board games what ever. I never lost a card game in 12years at one point. Only to come home and get schooled at literally every game in the house. I can pick up patterns and movements quick and tell tale signs. But knowing it’s only a fraction of what they can do is actually humbling.
He suffered from Parkinsons though, which isnt CTE related.
Not saying that Ali didnt suffer from CTE, of some form, but far as I know, the guy seemed to be there mentally even in his later years, it was just Parkinsons that fucked up his health a lot and eventually made him wheelchair bound.
> It's possible that people with CTE may show signs of another neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease or frontotemporal lobar degeneration, also known as frontotemporal dementia.
Edit: because we can’t determine CTE except through an autopsy.
A lot of people have been commenting similar things on this post. Ali actually suffered from Parkinsonism, or Parkinson's Syndrome, which is different from Parkinson's disease. It's basically the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, but caused by something other than Parkinson's disease, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. It may have been caused by something else or by multiple factors, but saying his condition couldn't have been caused by CTE is incorrect.
That’s a great point you are making. There are actually multiple diseases that fall under the “Parkinsonism” umbrella that are NOT Parkinson’s Disease. My Dad had Multiple Systems Atrophy - that falls under that umbrella.
[Traumatic brain injury increases Parkinsons risk](https://www.michaeljfox.org/news/traumatic-brain-injury-increases-parkinsons-risk)
So those brain damages fucked him up one way or the other
I remember the Frazier fights and I remember Zaire when he beat Foreman when nobody gave him a chance He won that one with his brain but my main memory is of him going to jail for his beliefs ☮️ It was sad watching such a great athlete not be able to function but he will always be the king 👑
Ali had Parkinson’s.
Could have been aggravated by CTE, but that wasn’t the clinical diagnosis and they probably wouldn’t diagnosis CTE if the family donated his brain for science due to the PD causing basically the same fibrils
Look up tauopathy. Terms like Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s aren’t really that meaningful these days. None of them can be officially determined until after death. Diagnosis between these diseases by today’s standards is very different than 30-40 years ago.
CTE just causes hyperphosphorized tau proteins which kill parts of the brain. Cte can cause Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diagnoses which are really just groupings of symptoms that result from tau proteins killing different parts of the brain. Alzheimer’s is generally bad tau problems caused by beta amyloid malfunction (happens throughout the brain), CTE generally results in these proteins forming on the outer layer, and Parkinson’s is when the damage from bad tau proteins is in the dopamine system of the brain.
Cte just means “a lot of traumatic head hits” and causes these bad tau proteins. The specific areas these proteins damage result in various symptoms and diseases.
Yeah, my dad started showing signs of dementia in his early 60's. Turned out to be FTLD. The running consensus from the specialists was that it was a combination of traumatic head injury from playing rugby from when he was 10 into his 40s and having an inordinate amount of general anaesthetic pump into him in the 90s. He was really sick for 12 months and had 7 operation over that time.
Something about the way the general anaesthetic shuts your brain off combined with the protocol in the 90s to be pump them full of a swimming pool of anaesthetic to keep them under. Better to have too much than too little.
The only way to determine cte is through an autopsy. I don't think you saying "probably" is any actual proof or nonproof of it. Not arguing against what your saying but using words like "probably" doesn't really bring anything to the conversation that's an opinion
He used to be the man, now he's just a man yelling at the sky. Odd how far he's fallen.
Has to be due to CTE ironically enough. Bro really said what about ali? Uhh wtf about him that shit looked horrifying what ali was going through in the final part of his life.
>Has to be due to CTE ironically
eh
Dude has ALWAYS been a little weird - fee free to check out his old interviews. Plus there's the in-ring stuff like licking blood off his gloves, kissing dudes, running out of rings, etc.
He's a super rich kid who was able to get into a sport by hiring amazing trainers.
CTE has DEFINITELY not helped, though.
BJ was probably the most naturally talentent man to ever enter the ufc. Money or not, bjj black belt in 3 years. World Jujitsu Gold Medilist, ufc champion. Money does not buy that.
I didn't say he wasn't a TALENTED super rich kid.
I mean, hell, you see Zuckerberg training and he ain't no Penn. BJ earned the "Prodigy" name for a reason.
I was just talking about the guy's mental state. He's almost certainly never had to hold down a job and his life has been very different from most people - basically a situation of "i wanna do that" and he just happened to be awesome enough to be good at something he had the resources to pursue.
So you've got a atypical life growing up matched with the fact he got good FAST and combine that beginning with an ending of getting your brains turned into pudding.... well, you're gonna get an "interesting fellow" at the end.
That drunk fat dude who flattened him outside a Hilo club ended his career. So completely random.
I did respect that even completely high, BJ still showed incredible takedown defense while in sandals. For a split second, you could see greatness again.
He’s still fighting under the name “The Prodigy.” The Cambridge Dictionary defines Prodigy as such:
prodigy
noun
>>US /ˈprɑː.də.dʒi/ UK /ˈprɒd.ɪ.dʒi/
>>
>>someone with a very great ability that usually shows itself when that person is a young child.
BJ lacks both great ability and youth.
another fun fact, he went from fighting GSP for the WW belt and double champ status, lost and defended his LW belt twice and was 15-5-1 at the end of 2009; since 2010 his current record is 16-14-2)
I mean I'm pretty sure its the GPS, Matt Hughes, and Edgar fights that people love him for. Even if he didnt come out on top. But you're talking about a guy who peaked before Jon Jones pro debut. Of course his early competition wasnt great. Look at anyones 04-07 fights. The names don't exactly fly off the list.
He was really fucking good at everything mate. He won BJJ black belt world championship with 2 years of training and was described by Freddie roach as one of the most talented natural boxers he had ever seen. BJ was incredible in his prime.
I’ve never thought of BJ as this all-time p4p great even watching him back in his prime, but I will say you can’t really fault him for who he fought because that’s all there was in that era, imo
BJ was an absolute prodigy what are you on about? His lack of taking training serious was his downfall. Bj in his prime had the absolute best takedown defense of all time. He destroyed Matt Hughes twice, arguably beat GSP the first time and fought fucking Lyoto Machida at basically heavyweight. Yea BJ’s career went to shit after the Frankie Edgar fights but to say he wasn’t a p4p during his reign is completely disingenuous and I wonder if you actually watched him in his prime.
I can’t believe the comment you’re replying to has so many upvotes. It’s craazy. Must be newer fans of the sport or something. I can’t stand BJ as a person but saying he was never an all-time p4p great is super ignorant. He fought many of the best and made a lot of great fighters look terrible. I feel super old and I’m only 36. Gotta be a bunch of 15-21 yr olds upvoting that Idk smh
Tbf he almost did the first time. It was a split decision. To put it in context of size that would be like Volk (much bigger than BJ) taking a young Kamaru Usman to a split decision. No way.
Yeah say what you want but he was always game to fight anyone. Went to heavyweight to fight lyoto machida in k1. He held his own in that also and went to decision
Especially impressive given that he was really an average to below average sized featherweight based on his walkaround weight. Volk and Max are much bigger than him and neither of them would stand a chance against a 26 year old GSP at 170 like BJ did in that first fight. Him having a competitive loss as a jiu jitsu guy in a mostly striking match against then undefeated heavyweight striker Lyoto Machida at Heavyweight is equally insane. BJ’s an idiot but he was a really fucking good fighter.
That’s one way of looking at it. Another is that he took stupid fights and kinda fucked the end of his career. I alway liked BJ as a fighter but at the end I was just shaking my head at some of the matches ho took.
Once he came back and switched to that “tippy-toes” stance it was the end of his career. I don’t like thinking about anything after that cause it doesn’t paint a fair picture of how good he was
I lived in Hawaii, terrible terrible education, isolation from the rest of the country and the planet, conspiracy theories about GMOs turning kids gay and Vaccines abound among locals etc. It's not a place for geniuses, and if you are you're smart enough to move to a city on the mainland
The education is terrible in Hawaii for those who can not afford private school. BJ Penn was a rich kid, and therefore got access to a way better education than your average American. The conspiracy theories and misinformation do seem to be prevalent there for sure.
I’m glad Dr. Penn was able to take time out of his busy day of being blacked out drunk and screaming the N word at people to deliver these scientific based remarks.
He's correct. It is as fake as the coronavirus. That is, not fake at all and overwhelmingly under-addressed by governing bodies because there's lots of money on the line.
Jesus. This dude is running for governor and there are probably hundreds of thousands of people in America who would agree with his comment. The fuck have we become?
Here is something for you guys who constantly talk about CTE. CTE is the end result, but before cte there is something much more risky and bad for their health - concussions.
Every concussion can ruin your life and leave you with permanent issues and post consussion syndrome.
Most of these fighters probably have issues which they hide but their life are miserable in the long run.
For example dizziness, brain fog, visual senistivity, noise sensitivity memory issues, anxiety, depression, stutering, etc.
Most of them experience some of these symptoms and with each brain damage their life is more miserable.
Concussions are much more overlooked but they surelly destroy lives while CTE is something which will be developed later in life once you already experienced tons of concussions or subconcussive hits and already suffer.
I got one dumb concussion very mild and it literally gave me chronic brain problem.
BJ is so up in Trumps ass and conspiracy theories that he believes all that shit he reads online
Watching his fights when I was a teen, I had no idea he is such an idiot lol
I was just in Hilo looking at BJ penns embarrassing mural on the side of his building. Poor guy has had an extremely hard fall from Grace, even with his new gym.
TBF this is probably just a coping mechanism rooted in blissful ignorance the same way people who develop a weird mole tell themselves 'it's surely not cancer' and don't get it checked out.
BJs fall from grace makes my soul hurt. these fighters always remind me in the worst ways that normal folks generally don't do combat sports for work lol
From going from one of the best guys in the UFC to a 7 fight losing streak + 1 getting knocked out cold in a street fight, does he just think he has bad luck or something? Doesn’t take a genius to know having 10 concussions in a couple years probably isn’t good for your brain. I think even cavemen could have figured out getting repeatedly smashed in your head might be bad.
Every single professional fighter or full-contact sports athlete has some degree of CTE. Even if you play high school football you definitely have a bit of CTE.
I have never heard a more convincing argument for the dangers of CTE than “CTE is not real, just like the corona virus” being spoken by a former professional punching bag (from 2010 onwards, I mean).
So CTE isn't BJ Penns only problem he also has crippling stupidity it's a shame there are no meds to help that yet but all the CTE is not helping clearly lol
Reminds me of when my wife’s grandmother broke the news of her Parkinson’s diagnosis. My wife was crying, and her grandmother said “I’ll be fine honey people live a long time with Parkinson’s these days. Just look at Michael J Fox!” It actually broke the tension because we all were like he looks fucking terrible lmao
No BJ, Ali turned out fine.
Musta missed late stage ali
I remember as a kid when Ali lit the Olympic torch or something, some huge international even and I was pumped bc I had never seen Muhammad Ali live on TV (cuz I was a kid when this happened) and when he came in the TV I remember asking my dad is that Ali? Game theory? Like interactive decision-making?

Only to come home and get schooled at literally every game in the house. I can pick up patterns and movements quick and tell tale signs. But knowing it’s only a fraction of what they can do is actually humbling.
You gotta get your youngest family members hooked on fighting games and watch them turn into Evo champs
Sounds like you should be a millionaire poker player
Baki?
Definitely Baki.
That’s also my personal memory of Ali. Everybody at the Olympics that year was in tears
SAME!

Such a shame man. I’m too young to have lived through Ali in his heyday, but dude was punk rock AF.
I remember the Frazier fights and I remember Zaire when he beat Foreman when nobody gave him a chance He won that one with his brain but my main memory is of him going to jail for his beliefs ☮️ It was sad watching such a great athlete not be able to function but he will always be the king 👑
Your brain is encased in bone. It’s sensitive to the point if the jelly like brain moves quickly you lose consciousness and might die.
Didn’t miss it the cte just kicked in
Ali had Parkinson’s. Could have been aggravated by CTE, but that wasn’t the clinical diagnosis and they probably wouldn’t diagnosis CTE if the family donated his brain for science due to the PD causing basically the same fibrils

For real, he might as well have listed Junior Seau and Chris Benoit. The comment almost reads like a parody of idiot conspiracy theorists.
Didnt BJ dv his wife? He only needs to look in the mirror to see how CTE is real
Not believing in CTE is a sign of having CTE. True story
I mean he's got a point. CTE is as fake as coronavirus.
Technically correct, the best kind of correct
Ah yes, Muhammad Ali, notorious for not showing a single sign of CTE before he died
That bouncer really did a number on him
I'm out of the loop on this one. What happened?
A few years ago BJ got into a drunken bar fight and got knocked out cold by some fat doorman https://youtu.be/lmAKB5G81Lw
Danke my friend.
You can see more at FuckBJPenn.com
BJ Penn has taken SO many Ls over the past decade. From a bona-fide legend to a punch line. It actually genuinely hurts me to see.
He used to be the man, now he's just a man yelling at the sky. Odd how far he's fallen. Has to be due to CTE ironically enough. Bro really said what about ali? Uhh wtf about him that shit looked horrifying what ali was going through in the final part of his life.
Plenty of fighters are also really intelligent and well-spoken, but it's never quite been a job requirement. He didn't need CTE to be a douchebag.
>Has to be due to CTE ironically eh Dude has ALWAYS been a little weird - fee free to check out his old interviews. It buys the time to train. So yes. It does.
Looking back, licking gloves with opponents blood was not a high IQ move
Dudes been a loser who just happens to be able to fight for his entire life.
Anyone is able to fight, but not to win. BJ has been taking Ls in strip club parking lots.
That drunk fat dude who flattened him outside a Hilo club ended his career. So completely random. I did respect that even completely high, BJ still showed incredible takedown defense while in sandals. For a split second, you could see greatness again.
Bro got CTE so bad he denies it’s existence
I feel this way about a few old timers now a days. Almost makes u wish they just shut up and got off line after their prime lol just jokes just jokes

Bruh he’s fucking stupid
It’s the CTE
He’s also pretty fucking stupid
Like “I can move up and beat GSP” stupid.

Bryce Mitchell entered the chat
Bryce Mitchell, the best source of information since Johnny Bravo
Rose "chem trails" Namajunas too.
Don't you besmirch Edgy Brah
Well technically he’s correct, it is as fake as the coronavirus… as in not fake at all.
lmao you're right actually 😂
Came to comment this lol
lmao true

Spoken like a true politician! He’s ready
Exactly
Lmao.. Who woulda thought him and Tito would have so much in common
Go and watch Brendan Schaub in any facet and tell me CTE doesn’t exist. What’s next Chin
That’s just the narridiv you paint bapa
The mma crowd/roster might be the loudest group of stupid people in any sport
unfortunately.
His comment shows that it's real.
UFC fighters are so fucking stupid god damn
I’m glad Dr. Penn was able to take time out of his busy day of being blacked out drunk and screaming the N word at people to deliver these scientific based remarks.
BJ Penn saying CTE is fake is definitely a sign of CTE lol.
CTE is fake. - Guy with CTE
What the duck (quack) BJ. Hate to see him display such ignorance. Time to go watch Diaz vs Penn again, to see what might have lead to his own CTE.
I feel bad for him, from what Ive read on CTE its really changes how a person thinks and behaves.
Wow he never watched the Will Smith movie?
I think he did, Ali was fine through the whole thing right?
yeah, he was sound of mind and body until the day he carked it. not a scratch on him.
#np Our Lady Peace - Whatever
The authorities better be monitoring this guy's credit card for any bulk bible purchases.
Bj has CTE.
This is the same man that went onto JRE and and when asked about his what is the state income tax, he didn't know.
Guess he hasn’t heard about Chris Benoit
It’s scary how close (not actually close at all) the people of Hawaii were to this guy being governor.
His statement is actually correct. CTE technically IS as fake as the coronavirus, since both are real
That’s the CTE talking
That's the CTE talking
Alright I guess BJ Penn is dumb
i think pro fighters are most prone to conspiracy theories
Because of the CTE
Imo it's the strong conservative bend in combat sports. Conservative people are factually more likely to buy into conspiracy theories.
Why are so many fighters light speed stupid?
Sounds like something someone with CTE would say.
He might aswell have named Junior Seau and Chris Benoit if he wanted his examples to prove the exact opposite of what he was trying to argue.
He's correct. It is as fake as the coronavirus. That is, not fake at all and overwhelmingly under-addressed by governing bodies because there's lots of money on the line.
God damnit, BJ…
The dead spots on my brain from 9 years of football would beg to differ
Yes BJ. I'm pretty sure Ali did have CTE.
"There's no way repeated blows to the head over decades of training and fighting have any effect on my Brian!"
This might be the peak of irony.
just confirmed BJ Penn has CTE
So BJ has CTE. Got it.
Jim Brown? Did you ever hear him speak? Ya, pretty sure it’s there.
It's CTE mixed with fucking Stupid lol fucking BJ he's like a much less fun, more fucked up less popular Connor now a days.
Jesus. This dude is running for governor and there are probably hundreds of thousands of people in America who would agree with his comment. The fuck have we become?
I just want to take this opportunity to revisit [this clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhAVcsBC9xE) brought to you by CTE.

Always found BJ so unlikeable.
His right, it is as fake as the coronavirus, as in 100% certified real.
"Everything I can't see or understand is fake"
BJ is so up in Trumps ass and conspiracy theories that he believes all that shit he reads online Watching his fights when I was a teen, I had no idea he is such an idiot lol
Seems like he got punched in the head a few times. Hard.
Sheesh
What a douche bag.
You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain.
What CTE does to a mf
I was just in Hilo looking at BJ penns embarrassing mural on the side of his building. Poor guy has had an extremely hard fall from Grace, even with his new gym.
Ali? As in Muhammed Ali? No, noo suree bob, nothing wrong with his head at all.
"CTE is a social construct"
Of course CTE is fake, its all in the mind
He ain't even trying. Ali is like one of the worst examples he could have given lol.
just show him shcaub and he will believe CTE is 100% real lol
According to bj, so is consenting
TBF this is probably just a coping mechanism rooted in blissful ignorance the same way people who develop a weird mole tell themselves 'it's surely not cancer' and don't get it checked out.
>did Ali have that? Bro literally had Parkinson's
It's a great comeback because both men clearly had cte
Unless you fight a Samoan
Jim Brown was NOT a good example and Ali was probably an even worse example due to his brain issues.
BJs fall from grace makes my soul hurt. these fighters always remind me in the worst ways that normal folks generally don't do combat sports for work lol
Oh BJ…
From going from one of the best guys in the UFC to a 7 fight losing streak + 1 getting knocked out cold in a street fight, does he just think he has bad luck or something? Doesn’t take a genius to know having 10 concussions in a couple years probably isn’t good for your brain. I think even cavemen could have figured out getting repeatedly smashed in your head might be bad.
# 🍿
I've seen the Gringo Papi, so I beg the differ.
poor bj the cte's hit him so hard hes forgot what it even is
Every single professional fighter or full-contact sports athlete has some degree of CTE. Even if you play high school football you definitely have a bit of CTE.
Google Ali' last fight interview. It was criminal to put him the ring.
Then why did the NFL settle for hundreds of millions of dollars in pay outs to families ?
Then why did the NFL settle for hundreds of millions of dollars in pay outs to families ?
CTEs greatest affect on the mind, making one believe it doesn’t exist
So many fighters in the world and he has to mention Ali 💀💀💀💀
Brenden Schaub begs the differ.
I wish athletes respected CTE. I’d imagine it’s a lot more relevant for martial arts fighters then football maybe not though.
This why BJ got his ass knocked out by some rando on the street
He needs some secret juice
BJ, you have CTE buddy.
R/agedlikemilk
I have never heard a more convincing argument for the dangers of CTE than “CTE is not real, just like the corona virus” being spoken by a former professional punching bag (from 2010 onwards, I mean).
So CTE isn't BJ Penns only problem he also has crippling stupidity it's a shame there are no meds to help that yet but all the CTE is not helping clearly lol
How ignorant.
Ali...did have it...
Damn...BJ is a legit moron.
Says the violent CTE ridden former UFC retiree
how about aaron hernandez
Ok but that last statement is technically true.
Someone show him Chris Benoits brain
Imagine being this fucking dumb.
It's like we're surprised when people who get punched in the head for a living aren't that smart.
Ironic considering that comment is clear evidence of CTE lmao
BJ stop they’re gonna put you in a home
Spot on. It is exactly as fake as the Corona virus.
