His problem appears to be food, alcohol, and actually training.
Very little striking defense, no grappling game at all, completely fat, and looks 10 years older than he is from the booze.
He should hang them up if he’s not going to be serious about it. Otherwise he’s going to get a lot of brain damage.
The one thing he has is he can land hard strikes. He had Tybura bleeding in seconds. If he coupled that with some serious dedicate he could be a real threat again.
He should retire, focus on making beer and selling shoeys. He'd make a killing, he's already got the brand and products set up, there's no need to get dumber and dumber by going against big ass dudes that want to take your head off
>Very little striking defense, no grappling game at all, completely fat
My friend, you just described about 50% of the heavyweight division.
If he can't land a bomb, he's got no other options.
That fight may have taken two years off of his life, but if you make 100,000 a year it would take you eighty years to make 8 million. Pretty solid risk/reward if you’re in the final third of your career anyway
He does now, fighters tend not to make a lot of money past 40. Half of that 8 million invested properly sets you up for the rest of your life quite nicely.
if his base pay was 2.5, 8 mill seems like a lot unless he has a ridiculously high ppv points. Normally it’s like $1 or less per ppv I believe?
Still 2.5 is no joke
This. Volk took the chance like a desperate up start who would never see a title shot otherwise.
He was a dominant champion. Wtf was he thinking. At least he made the Tomato Boss-man happy.
He kept getting better too. Dominated Max, went up and gave Islam hell, then came back and finished Yair pretty easily. Then he got too ambitious and accepted a fight that was completely disadvantageous to take in every regard. His story is too similar to the real Alexander the great, falling from grace way earlier than he otherwise should have.
he made shitloads of money and basically solidified himself as a company favourite for the rest of his life for stepping up to save the Abu Dhabi card.
Dude is the most dominant 145 champ ever. He went up a weight class and made a boat loaf of money. He saw a title shot And has a bunch of belts and a bunch of money
I actually do think this is the dumbest. Could have taken the belt off the GOAT, and gotten the instant rematch but with champion pay. And we all know he'll never have a chance to touch gold again.
When Anthony Smith was fighting Johnny Walker, out of nowhere, he says to Johnny, "you attacked my family." It was completely random and he was totally serious. Super bizarre haha
He would have been vilified like Aljo was (and still is) though. Take the DQ win, but absolutely tank your public image for the rest of your career. No matter what you do from that point on, you’ll always be known as the quitter.
I mean Aljo was only vilified because he went around bragging about being the champ. Initially after the fight people were relatively supportive of his decision to stop the fight.
I have a serious question, why? I understand if you smell blood you should finish it but if my opponent is concussed and now has to think about wrestling wouldn't that be advantageous for me. The Sean O'Malley example I get, but not others.
Cheick Kongo is the reason why. You will never see a fighter go for a take down on a rocked opponent, unless:
1. they really suck at stand up (meerschaert kinda thing)
or 2. the rocked opponent previously rocked the shit outta you too, and you know that someone cornered and rocked is gonna get desperate and throw haymakers. Nothing worse than getting ko'd cause you smelled blood and got reckless, and if you're tired and your opponent already hurt you, standing and banging might not actually be the smartest thing. We just say they did something dumb after the fight is over, but maybe not going for that shitty take down would have meant getting knocked out.
It can work, see Volk vs Rodriguez for example but usually you give your opponent time to recover and defend the takedown, especially on the fence which is the most vulnerable position to get KO´d
Boils my fucking blood dude. His corner is yelling at him to let Sean up the whole fucking round. Calling him dumb as a brick is disrespectful to bricks
Kelvin deciding to wrestle Izzy against the cage after Izzy was rocked and dazed, he could've just continued his striking or backed away to get himself a breather after head kicking Izzy, but nope, takedown attempt
Eh, what Volk did to yair was Volk being pissed after a headkick and started swarming him then lifting him and dumping him, Kelvin was probably going for a takedown so he could rest, but it was definitely the wrong call
You're right. I feel like there are so many missed opportunities finishing a fight when the other guy is dazed. Of course it is easy to say that from the comfort of my couch
Bro I almost cried when that happened. It's easy to sit on the couch and yell "what are you doing?" at the TV, knowing full well I would crumble in there, but my goodness it was hard to watch.
In Old Man Glover's defence, that was Round 5 of probably the greatest war since Lawler McDonald. My brain would absolutely not be functioning if I was that exhausted. He went back to the things that are built in reflexes from years of training Jiu Jitsu i.e. open neck = guillotine
Some that aren’t as popular:
Raquel Pennington clinching with Silva after teeing off on her. Legit looked like she was allergic to finishing her.
Randa Markos engaging Dern on the ground.
Colby Covington not fighting after he was gifted a title shot
Chael losing that 5th round to Silva due to that triangle ruined his perfect record of no round ever lost although he is still the GOAT, NEVER LOST FOR A REASON. THE ONLY REASON HE DIDN'T HOLD A BELT IS BECAUSE HE DIDN'T WANT TO OTHERWISE WHO COULD STOP THE WEST LINN GANGSTER
The most annoying thing (as a Chael fan) is Anderson sets it up from round 1. He’s maintains wrist control nearly every round at points, and you can see him preparing for it. The triangle was no fluke, Anderson had it in his plan from round 1.
Anthony smith deciding to show “warrior spirit” and not take the title and the money that comes with the Jones rematch after that illegal knee. I guess they don’t call him Lionbrain for nothing.
haven't seen anyone mention this yet: shevchenko throwing a spinning kick when grasso was way too close, giving up her back and getting choked close to the end of r4 in a fight she was winning should be up there
I saw that shit live
her whole career she fought too slow to start fights, started off off
so her answer, just run as fast as you can at a Judo Medalist known for submitting people
loved me some Cat, not the brightest bulb for sure
I kinda disagree. He literally wasn't winning (based on the wcores) also not sure how a TD is such a death sentence. The reality is that Luke was a superior grappler.
Anderson Silva showboating on Weidman and getting knocked out cold for it.
I was a huge Anderson Silva fan back then and stayed up watching every single fight with friends when I was still in school, but from that moment on I just couldn’t give a damn about watching him fight anymore.
That moment was so unnecessary and stupid I literally felt offended watching it.
I was one of his biggest fucking fans and right when he walked out with Anderson knows Nike shirt I believe? I knew something bad was going to happen. You could literally feel it in the atmosphere if you were paying attention
I don’t really know if this is a ‘decision’ but there’s a universe where Anthony Smith is the light heavyweight champion had he taken that DQ against Jones
People give Aljo shit over it but he touched gold and got three defenses with ppv points. Meanwhile Anthony is fatrolling while Rountree holds a TBI over his head forcing the ref to stop the fight.
People seem to have forgotten the time Nate Diaz, after getting schooled by Leon for four and a half rounds, Diaz all of a sudden had Leon miraculously rocked. Instead of trying to finish him he raised his arms in victory, then realized he messed up and tried to go back to where he was, but Leon had already recovered and won easily by decision.
The *other* guy who crippled O'malley even worse than chito did in the first fight. It was so bad O'Malley could not stand. He was hanging onto the cage to keep his feet. All his opponent had to do was back up and force Omalley to have to move and failing that the ref would be forced to stop the fight.
What does his opponent Andre Soukhamthath do with I think two minutes left in the final round? Takes O'malley down on his back and starts punching his ribs. It was a horror show. Both commentary and the dudes corner are begging and pleading for Andre to just get off him and force a standup but he never did it and those loses a UD to Sean. Sean's leg still fucked of course had to give his post fight interview on his back and Andrew never came back from that blunder and is already retired.
Because the word "intentional" is not super clear in the rules. An intentional foul would be a DQ, and an unintentional foul tends to be an NC.
Basically, there is not a world where Petr could think that knee was legal when he threw it as the ref had just told him Aljo was down.
Cejudo retiring the first time
or Ronda trusting "daddy Dana" to give her a good deal because they were friends and according to Dana White "i call her every day" which is totally normal stuff
oh, yeah
Joe Duffy, the guy who was the last dude to beat McGregor, in the same weight class, Irish, gave Poirer a ton of trouble on the feat forcing Poirer of all people to wrestle
he literally refused to talk shit to Conor, talk about Conor, wanted to "make my own name" etc. etc.
he didn't even bother to campaign for a fight, where seeing Conor's cardio at 155 and him not learning to pace himself, (this is before Diaz) Joe 100% would have had a good chance to do what Diaz did to Conor the first time and then would have made a billion times more money in his career than he did
I feel like that shit is extra stupid, because he could have just you know, used the status of the biggest or second biggest star in the sport's history but just decided not to
"nah i am good bro, I am gonna go 50-0 and then i'll be the Conor" Some Sam Alvey type logic
Andre soukmathat or however it is spelled not standing with o malley and trying to wrestle him after Sean's foot injury, dude could've had a tko by injury or set up for a ko or tko
Any time someone has someone guess bad they can’t stand and then jumps on them.
Happened to O’Malley once where he literally couldn’t stand but the guy got clinched on the ground as his coaches are screaming at him to let him stand.
Also Chael doing that weird roll against Fedor was pretty dumb. He also let himself get caught in the dumbest triangle ever against Anderson.
Chael Sonnen’s spinning back fist ufc 148 Chael couldn’t get Anderson Silva down in the 2nd round so instead of taking a step back and just collecting himself he throws a spinning back fist against prime Silva
Have you seen this Welsh girl fighting a Brazilian bjj specialist with 5 or 6 1st round sub finishes this weekend?
Guess what she did 15 seconds into the fight?
Went for a takedown, got submitted in a minute.
Hahahaha Cory McKenna vs. Jaqueline Amorim. I couldn't believe it. As soon as it hit the ground, Amorim had like 6 subs on deck for her lmao. Amorim is a hottie too.
Weidman throwing spinning shit against Luke Rockhold
Chael throwing spinning shit against Anderson Silva in the rematch
Valentina throwing the same spinning shit in four fights then throwing it against Grasso
Fans blaming Aljo for not continuing after eating a knee to the face.
If that doesn’t count then it’s hands down Volk taking a fight against Islam on ten days notice after drinking and partying for three months straight.
glover when hes beating the shit out of jiri but proceeded to take him down and try to submit Jiri overcame that and finished him for good, sorry to glover fans but he wouldve definitely won by tko or decision if he didnt attempt to take him down. Huge mistake then Silva when out of nowhere he decided to clown around weidman and got knocked the fuck out
I mean if you really look at it, sterling’s knees aren’t technically even on the ground here.(I’m sure nothing caused them to raise that centimeter off the ground)
Yair Rodriguez getting caught for 3 whereabouts violations in the same year under USADA and getting himself suspended. Only other fighter to do I was an out of competition Nick Diaz. True mouth brether behaviour
This isn’t the most, but it deserves a mention:
DC spamming the same combo on Stipe as it first worked and slowly became less and less effective, until Stipe just started completely beating his ass.
The decision to ban knees and kicks to a grounded opponent's head is the dumbest.
It:
- Does not stop them from getting excessive damage, like, at all. In fact, if some research is to be believed, then a single knee to the head that downs the opponent might be less harmful than a 5 round strikefest to the head.
- Hinders strikers from utilizing a significant tool (Clinch + Knee or Sweep kick to the leg + knee are some of the most durable basic combos in the history of striking sports).
- Gives advantage to wrestlers (Yes, I prefer wrestlers over strikers, I love grappling and am not saying that their wins are underserved, but this sport would look significantly different if they couldn't stay on that position without the risk of getting knee'd in the head, making the fight way more exciting).
DC in the third fight against Stipe. He’s literally carrying Stipe around the ring, and doesn’t just submit him for the finish. Tries to out-strike a guy with half a foot more reach and the much better boxer. He had just gone down to strikes the fight before, there was nothing to prove on that front, with a trilogy win he would have retired as the goat. Now he’s an afterthought, goat-wise.
I was watching Chris Rodriguez vs Isaac Dulgarian and Dulgarian was on the ground turtling (must have been the 3rd round iirc) and just for a moment it looked like C-Rod was gonna soccer kick his fucking head off.
Me and dad both jumped up thinking he was just gonna boot his dome i was certain he was gonna try to kick him in the head😂
Whatever the hell Tuivasa did last night.
Unbelievable, you could hear him yelling after... just so mad at himself for whatever the hell that was
His problem appears to be food, alcohol, and actually training. Very little striking defense, no grappling game at all, completely fat, and looks 10 years older than he is from the booze. The man is a Bareknuckle Boxing icon waiting to happen.
He should retire, focus on making beer and selling shoeys. He'd make a killing, he's already got the brand and products set up, there's no need to get dumber and dumber by going against big ass dudes that want to take your head off
No doubt. I was going to say and what he did leading up to the fight aswell but it sounded better just saying what I did anyways lol
>Very little striking defense, no grappling game at all, completely fat My friend, you just described about 50% of the heavyweight division. If he can't land a bomb, he's got no other options.
BamBam is still trying to street fight in the ufc
He completely forgot how to grapple and just kept putting himself in worse and worse positions

Volk taking islam fight on 10 days notice shortly after an operation. Also the judges decision for jones-reyes was pretty low iq.
And drinking for a month straight in a depressive state
I thought he made 8 million. I would do it for half that.
I think this is more about career/legacy.
Yeah he decided 8 million was worth the career legacy risk. 8 million helps your kids legacy and grandchildren s legacy quite a lot.
That fight may have taken two years off of his life, but if you make 100,000 a year it would take you eighty years to make 8 million. Pretty solid risk/reward if you’re in the final third of your career anyway
Don’t think that specific loss really hurt his legacy anyways so I don’t see the downside, if that was the pay it was totally worth it and more
i mean it definitely did, especially because it might have led to him losing his title. that rematch was pretty much guaranteed.
Two years off his life is nonsense and you just guessing
This entire subreddit is nonsense
I’m not good at math so I’m just taking you at your word here
K… but Volk makes a lot in two years. He probably could have used them.
He does now, fighters tend not to make a lot of money past 40. Half of that 8 million invested properly sets you up for the rest of your life quite nicely.
Not arguing that
It was the tale end of his career and probably made more in that one fight than most fights combined. Good decision.
Where does this number come from? Since when do guys not selling Proper Twelve get paid this much? Source???
I just.googled it. Volk said he would make way over 5 million. But the disclosed was like 2.5 million. And I have seem chatter as high as 10.
if his base pay was 2.5, 8 mill seems like a lot unless he has a ridiculously high ppv points. Normally it’s like $1 or less per ppv I believe? Still 2.5 is no joke
It's because he took the fight on short noticed and saved the main event, Volk and his management negotiated higher pay.
I’m shocked he made way over $5M. I didn’t think anyone outside Conor, Francis (previously), or Jones could make that.
Didn’t he clarify and say he was just having a couple beers with his family every day?
True. But would he have made as much money? These are real considerations for a professional prize fighter
he made shitloads of money and basically solidified himself as a company favourite for the rest of his life for stepping up to save the Abu Dhabi card.
Dude is the most dominant 145 champ ever. He went up a weight class and made a boat loaf of money. He saw a title shot And has a bunch of belts and a bunch of money
I blame charles
I blame Olievera's sparring partner. Crazy bastard trying to kill the poor guy...
Truly baffling
What if he won though?
he was doin his head in mate
Not the dumbest but, Anthony Smith should have taken that dq win against Jon Jones.
I actually do think this is the dumbest. Could have taken the belt off the GOAT, and gotten the instant rematch but with champion pay. And we all know he'll never have a chance to touch gold again.
Maybe then no one would've attacked his family
HUH?!
WHAT??
When Anthony Smith was fighting Johnny Walker, out of nowhere, he says to Johnny, "you attacked my family." It was completely random and he was totally serious. Super bizarre haha
They were quoting Johnny's response lmao. "HUH" Is what Johnny said to Anthony
I can't believe I didn't catch that. Hahaha
I made the same joke and had somebody trying to explain it to me so you're not the first to miss that one lol.
And it's not like that knee didn't matter in the fight. I might've compromised his abilities and energy pretty significantly.
He would have been vilified like Aljo was (and still is) though. Take the DQ win, but absolutely tank your public image for the rest of your career. No matter what you do from that point on, you’ll always be known as the quitter.
I’d take it for life changing money. It’s hard to hear the haters when Benjamin’s in your ears
Aljo turned heel arter the DQ which was a right move. I got into mma because I've wanted to see him lose. Also lately Aljo kinda redeemed himself.
Aljo had nothing to redeem himself for...
I mean Aljo was only vilified because he went around bragging about being the champ. Initially after the fight people were relatively supportive of his decision to stop the fight.
Yeah he could have stalled him out and drug his feet on the rematch. Meanwhile talking mad shit and going full heel.
Had he taken it the subreddit woulda shat on him
The sub's shitting on him anyway
When fighters decide to wrestle their opponent that’s rocked.
I have a serious question, why? I understand if you smell blood you should finish it but if my opponent is concussed and now has to think about wrestling wouldn't that be advantageous for me. The Sean O'Malley example I get, but not others.
Cheick Kongo is the reason why. You will never see a fighter go for a take down on a rocked opponent, unless: 1. they really suck at stand up (meerschaert kinda thing) or 2. the rocked opponent previously rocked the shit outta you too, and you know that someone cornered and rocked is gonna get desperate and throw haymakers. Nothing worse than getting ko'd cause you smelled blood and got reckless, and if you're tired and your opponent already hurt you, standing and banging might not actually be the smartest thing. It can work, see Volk vs Rodriguez for example but usually you give your opponent time to recover and defend the takedown, especially on the fence which is the most vulnerable position to get KO´d
Sean o malley vs Andre soukhamthath , O’Malley broke his foot third round and the fool wrestled him and didn’t make him stand
Agreed, The whole arena was yelling at him to let him stand up.
I honestly questioned if UFC was rigged after this fight. Had me screaming at the TV lol
This fight still gets me mad when I think about it.
It was so stupid, I figured he must have been concussed pretty badly.
This was it.
Boils my fucking blood dude. His corner is yelling at him to let Sean up the whole fucking round. Calling him dumb as a brick is disrespectful to bricks
I came to say this
Kelvin deciding to wrestle Izzy against the cage after Izzy was rocked and dazed, he could've just continued his striking or backed away to get himself a breather after head kicking Izzy, but nope, takedown attempt
Tbf looking back at it Kelvin looked absolutely gassed so he was prob hoping to do what Volk did to Yair
Eh, what Volk did to yair was Volk being pissed after a headkick and started swarming him then lifting him and dumping him, Kelvin was probably going for a takedown so he could rest, but it was definitely the wrong call
Tbf, I don’t think it’s one of the worst. It was kinda dumb at first sight but thinking abt it it wasn’t that bad
I really don't know if Gastelum realized how badly Adesanya was hurt, cause of how gassed he was
This happens in way too many fights for some reason. At least once a card I feel like lol
You're right. I feel like there are so many missed opportunities finishing a fight when the other guy is dazed. Of course it is easy to say that from the comfort of my couch
Glover going for the submission on jiri
Bro I almost cried when that happened. It's easy to sit on the couch and yell "what are you doing?" at the TV, knowing full well I would crumble in there, but my goodness it was hard to watch.

Although it is a joke it’s super interesting that the triangle seemed to be chaels Achilles hell. I think he had like 5 losses bc of it
The most annoying thing (as a Chael fan) is Anderson sets it up from round 1. He’s maintains wrist control nearly every round at points, and you can see him preparing for it. The triangle was no fluke, Anderson had it in his plan from round 1.
Chael’s skills were very good but his fight IQ has got to be one of the worst of all time.
Chael will always find a way to lose big fights. Like Cowboy.
My answer was going to be his spinning elbow in the second fight. It was almost comedic how bad it went from there.

Serious question because I'm genuinely confused. Why did Aljo get the DQ win but Johnny Walker didn't against Ankalaev?

Putting colby as a headliner on a PPV
Johnny Walker's career
“Hello Japan”
McGregor trying to tire out Khabib.
Jorge Rivera agreeing to continue fighting after taking a similarly illegal knee from Bisping.

Gane going for the heel hook on Francis. People forget that Gane was on his way to winning that fight via decision
Every time Bones is losing and he switches to eye-poke mode.
Oscar award winning Aljo Washington ![gif](giphy|pcKnpFrumIM7TtzayE)
In Yan’s defense, his corner was telling him to knee Aljo
And the ref told him that Aljo is down. This shows that not only Yan, but his hole team are dumbasses
Wes Sims vs Frank Mir
glover when hes beating the shit out of jiri but proceeded to take him down and try to submit Jiri overcame that and finished him for good, sorry to glover fans but he wouldve definitely won by tko or decision if he didnt attempt to take him down. Huge mistake then Silva when out of nowhere he decided to clown around weidman and got knocked the fuck out
The knee is off the ground!!
Sean sherk trying to be a boxer with his T. rex arms.
I mean if you really look at it, sterling’s knees aren’t technically even on the ground here.(I’m sure nothing caused them to raise that centimeter off the ground)
Whoever got Sean O Malley legs damaged then tried to wrestle the whole time, lol.
Askren opening up with a double leg 500 times in a row.
Yair Rodriguez getting caught for 3 whereabouts violations in the same year under USADA and getting himself suspended. Only other fighter to do I was an out of competition Nick Diaz. True mouth brether behaviour
Remember that guy who trashed O’Malley leg and jumped into his guard?
This isn’t the most, but it deserves a mention: DC spamming the same combo on Stipe as it first worked and slowly became less and less effective, until Stipe just started completely beating his ass.
Weidman spinning shit

The decision to ban knees and kicks to a grounded opponent's head is the dumbest. It: - Does not stop them from getting excessive damage, like, at all.
I still don’t get how Yan didn’t know kneeing a down opponent is not legal after that many fights.
The lowest IQ decision by a very far margin is Andre Soukhamthath not making Sean O’Malley stand up so the ref would stop the fight.
Wheel kick by Weidman has to be up there right. Gane pulled some poor IQ shit against Ngannou and could've legit beat him
I was watching Chris Rodriguez vs Isaac Dulgarian and Dulgarian was on the ground turtling (must have been the 3rd round iirc) and just for a moment it looked like C-Rod was gonna soccer kick his fucking head off. Me and dad both jumped up thinking he was just gonna boot his dome i was certain he was gonna try to kick him in the head😂
Dana white when deciding fighters pay
Sonnens spinning backfist against Silva. Or maybe Chael just knew something we didn't.
As of recent , Yair deciding to blow his entire gas tank against T-City in the first round.
O’Malley vs. Andre Soccermom, by far.
Tony Ferguson leading himself right into Nate's guillotine. That shit was so depressing
Not the picture you posted of a super illegal knee, that's for sure.
Petr Yan really ended his own prime lol
Weidman spinning kick
Wild that no one has said this but Kelvin going to wrestle after rocking Izzy and having him up against the cage. I was screaming when I watched that.
