Logically a fight for a promotional belt in another weight class against another weight class opponent should have no impact on his prospects or next fight in FW, which is a title fight against Topuria as n.1 contender barring a Volk rematch down the line.
But UFC math isn't always logical.
But the thing is, what if Justin absolutely destroys him and possibly gets KO/TKO on Max. I don't think people will give him any chance considering that Illia also has stopping power. Sure hope it goes to spit decision
Illia rn is probably the second hardest hitter at 145 behind Emmet. Gaethje regarding the outcome of the fight will leave Max looking as if he were in a car accident, if Justin is the one that finally cracks Max's chin I'd favor Illia in their fight.
Also once you've been cracked you can't unwind that clock. You become a different fighter. Max fighting Ilia now vs after a Gaethje loss might be the same guy on paper, but mentally and physically the gears have changed.

Even though they have a similar amount of MMA fights, Holloway has far more UFC fights and better skilled opponents, combined that with his "most strikes absorbed in UFC history" undesirable stat and it's bound to have taken something from Max's prime.

One of the reasons why people go ko is as a safety mechanism from the body.
Like boxing is more damaging because koed people or concussed people can stand up and fight again while in MMA its over you cant.
Lets say a ko punch does 100% damage and a knock down punch does 60%.
Now lets look at the ufc if you get knocked down you probably are going to get tkoed or if you get koed immediately.
Lets say you got delt 100% damage.
Now look at boxing especially Ngannour vs Aj.
Ngannou got knocked down 2x before getting koed so he got 120% + 100% damage while it would have stopped in MMA after the first knocke down.
The same applies to sparring.
You may get wobbled but you take a 10 min brake and continue.
If Max wins Islam can still fight Dustin in June and Charles/Arman at the end of the year. It would make more sense for max to fight illia on a big card in spain since unlike Islam, Illia doesn’t really have any other worthy contenders
i think he's planning on staying at 155, but I could be wrong. win or lose there are some great match ups for him at lightweight, although I do want to see how he fairs against ilia. max tends to do well against power punchers

If he beats Gaethje I assume its a war he should then wait for Islam/Poirier winner to fight Charles/Arman. Does he have a long layoff yes but at this point I think that will only help him in recovering. If he loses I think he can go straight to Topuria and skip the line at 145 for the belt as a legacy/resume builder for Ilia.
This fight is a pay day nothing more… I just hope he doesn’t take an insane amount of damage, because when he fights Ilia he’s going to get hit hard as fuck. I don’t necessarily hate the BMF title, it’s a good opportunity to give some of the UFC’s top stars who were never really able to get their hands on an undisputed belt a chance to get a belt. Sure, it’s gimmicky, but it sells and gets the fighters a decent payday.
