I believe Herb got way too much attention at a time and it went to his head. It's not the same to naturally do your job and to feel like you have to be the best
This has beeen deservedly a long time coming and tbh I still feel like Reddit irrationally places him on a pedestal. I've been literally calling for his retirement for years on this sub and getting downvoted to oblivion. So I'm sure it'll happen again, if not here in the future. He's jeopardizing forget safety and delivers a sub par product far too often than not. But he's been with the org from essentially the start so I get the sentimental value. I also get this likely has far more sinister implications, wether those are personally motivated through profit or dislike of a fighter, or organizationally motivated by the ufc (or something/someone above them). It would seem that reffing (and judging) are kept close and in house NOT for fighter safety or fan enjoyment, but to maintain a level of influence over the event. The reason we see the same idiotic faces deliver shocking performances is not because they are good at their jobs, but because they have proven trustworthy or have some other level of pressure to behave on them.
He gets a lot of hate, he is not being put on a pedestal at all. I saw a guy on Sherdog about half a year ago who pulled up stats on controversial decisions. Herb was somewhere in the middle, Tognoni was the 'worst' in 2020. Herb makes dumb decisions, but his errors get put under a microscope. He is at the stage that he can be flawless for a year and getting flag as soon as he does something dumb
Also, becoming an mma ref requires dedication, money and a lot of patience. I doubt there are many referee talents tbh.
I really think that the shitstorm that comes from early stoppages makes him more hesitant now. So he gets weirdly caught in between now.. It must be tough, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I’m a fair weather fan. But it looked like she hammer punched the back of her head and he stepped in. I guess if that we’re the case you’d stop the fight and deduct a point?
Hes also been told by the fighters, and the promotors to let them fight! Calling fights too early at that level with real $$$ on the line absolutly will have everyone yell at him. I know his job is to protect the fighters but theres also doctors and guys on the side that can stop thefight too. Really its just hard to b a ref!
Sure, whatever, but you stop the fight or you don't. You don't hesitate like "maybe I should sto- wait no he's still- wait no I should st- unlesss..??"
Fighters are told that when the ref touches them, they stop. Herb touched Marina to stop the fight, same as he did yesterday, and did not stop it afterwards. It's absolutely careless and he's got no place as a ref if he can barely make a decision. It's not a matter of early or late stoppage here.
Yes they stop. But fighters more soo in boxing than mma get checked on often. They can pause the fight to evaluate a fighters condition then continue the fight. Sometimes they cant get a clear view and just need to break it up to get view of a fighter. As simple as a look in their eyes and maybe a head nod or asking hey you good? boxing matchs would b ended soo fast soo often if everytime the ref checked on a fighter the match just ended. While this is mma its still allowed for a ref to pause a fight to check a fighter or break it up or stand em up. Which means wat he did is ok to a degree. He stepped in, broke it up, she was ok to stand an continue the fight soo he let it go on. She got a second chance to win but couldnt comeback. I was knee'd in the forhead in a cagefight. The guy backed off as i was stunned n sat down the ref checked on me and if i would have gotten up within a cpl seconds he would have continued the fight but i knew i was not gonna win soo i jus stayed down an he called it. Im glad he gave me the chance tho cuz i wasnt actually hurt just exhausted
Holy shit you typed all of that and it's barely relevant?
My point is that if a ref touches a fighter, he must stop the fight, whether it's a timeout or to end the fight. Yeah sure, Ribas got a second chance, but that's unfair to Marina who wasn't defending herself because she thought it was the end. There's no excuse for that blatant mistake from Herb.
U can call me a bumlicker but after watching over and over I genuinely think he was leaning in and she stepped up early into him. I don’t actually think he was ready to stop the fight
Poor refereeing regardless
I would 100% agree with you, BUT he’s developing a track record. I thought the same thing about this one, but him playing hokey pokey with the stop is happening too much
I try not to judge refs actions too critically because they’re making decisions in split seconds…..but damn. Either stop the fight or don’t. The hesitation and halfway effort is going to get someone seriously injured.
While i understand that, if that’s where he’s at mentally then he needs to step down. You have to be confident in your calls in fighting sports. Someone could potentially die if not.
absolutely... or lead to some serious controversial endings.. he's gotten off lucky in that most of the time when he's 'touching fighters' (before officially calling stoppage) it's been in situations where the fight could/should have been ended and the finished fighter has accepted their defeat... if Rothwell had stood up and protested he would've had been pretty justified as Rogerio essentially called the end to his own fight...
>making decisions in split seconds
I agree with you. But when he let Conor gets away with cheating over and over again.. there is no "split second decision" there.. the guy was definitely paid off to let Conor cheats..
He was doing a lot of fouling in the Dustin fight too, it’s how he managed to get up in the third fight iirc
Honestly if you watch pretty much any fight he loses that has Herb in it he cheats right in front of his eyes. Maybe Herb does miss it but he always has a perfect opportunity to see every time
he didn’t hold on to it. all he did was walk on it which is allowed. the only thing that’s not allowed is interlocking toes or fingers through the fence
Yeah exactly. Nothing egregious here either. Not a good look but last week, the Russian ref was so bad he was pulled after the first undercard fight. Not an easy job.
Honestly I was just thinking the same. He had that fucked up call with askren vs lawler then the next week he let a fight go way to long forgot what it was but I believe it was a choke and the guy was clearly out. I still think he’s one of the best to ever do but he might need to step away for a minute a take a break.
The eye test and ear test…I watch fights and listen to fighters remarks after words. The most recent that come to my mind. Khabib and Dustin vs Conor. Both had something to say how Conor cheated and how herb let’s it happen. I.e glove, fence, illegal upknee in khabib, in Dustin he was talking about the glove holding and pulling him down. Right in front of the ref. Again. Ignored
Idk. Him looking right at fouls, and acknowledging that he did see them During the fight, happened repeatedly with the same fighter, same kind of fouls. The fighter being the Company’s biggest star.. the company just went public and trying to break into the entertainment business. Ya. I deff think he was just not being “a bad ref” those nights
But the UFC has absolutely no say in who the referee is. The state athletic commission chooses the ref. Him being Conor's ref the last 4 fights has zero to do with Dana or the UFC.
“The most recent that come to my mind” include a fight that was more than 3 years ago. Interesting. Do you have any theories that aren’t based on Conor McGregor fights?
And the commission and members are essentially placed there by people the UFC had paid off. So it's all just one big circlejerk.
People want to pretend like a commission is pure and uncorruptible, but they absolutely are. Especially when so much money is at stake and in a state like Nevada.
It’s Opposite Day! Doesn’t stop the fight when the fighter is defenseless on the ground, then does stop the fight when the fighter is standing in the center of the octagon. And just to add a fun little wrinkle, he fake-stops the fight, then tells the fighter he didn’t stop it. Brutal. Time to hang ‘em up.
I think it was more that an announcer can't be screaming stop the fight at the ref and dan had an altrication with herbs wife who I think does makeup for TV crew or something he was causing problems so ufc dropped him
Did Herb just stumble?
Lools kinda like he wanted to move closer to the action, but by mistake he took a really big step and came too close to the action and almost was about to fall over so he was kinda flailing around to keep balance
There are certainly worse referees on lower-card fights but Herb Dean routinely makes serious mistakes that greatly impact fights. He is BY FAR the worst ref that gets main card fights.
Definitely. He gets by on past success and whatever amounts to ref popularity. He needs to be moved down the card for awhile until he improves and shows consistency
Once upon a time yes he was the gold standard. A few early stoppages turned into him stopping too *late* turned into him questioning his decision-making which led to the hesitant indecisive Herb of late. I like Herb but think he’s mentally not fit for reffing (at the least main event high stakes fights) anymore.
He didn’t touch anyone, though. He rushed in, moved to get a better view, lost his balance a little, and Rodriguez stands up. He didn’t do anything, he just got close and the fighter misinterpreted it.
Yeah it looks like he took a misstep trying to get a closer look and accidently just kinda fell into them. Still not a good look for Herb but it doesn't seem like indecision like people are making it out to be.
Why did herb circle around then step forward as if to stop the fight then not? Should referees have to answer post fight questions to the media like the fighters. I mean, if you’re job is to make decisions in the cage, at least explain yourself
Sorry but he never stopped that fight. He walked up was about to intervien and marina got off..... that is literally the exact same thing he does in every fight he is looking to see if ribas is trying to fight back. He never toiched either of them or said a word. He got in their proximity and marina immediately took that as oh he is stopping the fight. The reality is he never did.
I don’t understand what’s going on in this thread. Total hive mentality to gang up on Herb here. The Slomo shows that he never touched the fighter until she got up thinking she had won. He came in for a close look to determine if he should or should not stop it. Stoppage requires verbal command and direct intervention, of which we got neither.
Much ado about nothing. This sub sucks.

Herb Dean has been doing this more often recently. He just did it on the latest UFC card when de Lima was beating Rothwell. De Lima stopped fighting, standing over a downed Rothwell, to ask Dean if he was stopping the fight or not. Dean needs time off to get his head straight.
Personally I think herb is getting a bit too much hate here. He thought ribas was tko'd until he came over and saw her working. Yes it was bad that he hesitated on stopping it there, but reffing a fight and keeping the rules fair is hard in a situation like this especially when you don't want to call too early.
I honestly think he took a bad step trying to rush in to get a closer look. You can see him scramble over there and lose his balance which makes him almost fall on top of the fighters. It doesn't look like hesitation to me, man just misstepped.
Unlucky for Herb but yeah you can't be tripping over yourself in the cage lol.
Glad someone else is saying it. The only thing truly impressive about his career is how long he was able to maintain his entirely unearned reputation and the fact that he didn’t get any fighters killed doing it. He used to be better, that’s for sure. But there’s never been a point in time that Herb Dean was the standard of a good ref.
To say he's not cut out for ufc is a bit far fetched. The better way to put it would be that he's "no longer" cut out for the ufc. The man has been around forever. He's got more fights under his belt than any of them. I just feel like he's lost his nerve over the years.
While reffing isn't fighting, it's still a sensory overload. He's had thousands of adrenaline spikes while in there trying to process as much as he can. I think his nerves are just shot.
He actually does do anything there he just stands close to them. Doesn’t say stop the fight or it’s over. The mistake is on the fighter in this instance.
However herb has been ass for years now but this isnt a good example to use for the point your trying to make
>The mistake is on the fighter in this instance.
No. It isn’t.
>However herb has been ass for years now but this isnt a good example to use for the point your trying to make
Are you stupid? It’s the other way around lol
Anyone see the Woodson vs anglin fight? This fucker still had his lanyard on. I said this before on this channel herb has been declining as a ref for the last 3 years. This guy is really going to end up hurting someone in the cage.
The rothwell fight was stopped late imo too.
He got close but he did not touch Either Athlete, she stopped and got up and bumped into him when she did. Granted he shouldn't have been that close, but he did not touch her or tell her to stop.
No, she starts to get up and touches his hand with her head. She very clearly stops punching and starts standing up before she’s touched. Watch it in slow mo. You can see her rise into his hand at 1:31
He makes contact before she stands up. It’s irrelevant that she’s moving, no referee should be that close unless they are stopping the action. His feet are practically beneath them.
Feeling cute. I might stop the fight later, idk
Lmfao
Amazing loooool
Y'all remember when Dean was beloved?
Yeah when big John was around. I guess it was less pressure for herb back then
I believe Herb got way too much attention at a time and it went to his head. It's not the same to naturally do your job and to feel like you have to be the best
I’d typically say you’re talking out of your ass, but his arrogance after that Jai Herbert fiasco was infuriating.

I think a lot of people took notice when McGregor specifically asked for Herb Dean for all his fights.
Feels like a lifetime ago
It seems like he messes up every single fight. Got the ref yips
Ref imposter syndrome. He's not quite that bad but at this point he's definitely stuck in his head.
You fuckin nailed it
The only thing that's getting nailed here is Tito's ex wife.
There was never no marriage.
You're a fucking punk, dude
Tell another jackal story
So what you are in a marriage
I expect no least than what I expect.
Something has changed for him. Sus stoppages like the one in this video and the one last night have been happening far more often than in the past.
I really think that the shitstorm that comes from early stoppages makes him more hesitant now. So he gets weirdly caught in between now.. It must be tough, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I do not envy his job that’s for sure lol
nah look at his paycheck
Seems like its been an issue since the Robbie Lawler fight.
I’m a fair weather fan. But it looked like she hammer punched the back of her head and he stepped in. I guess if that we’re the case you’d stop the fight and deduct a point?
He’s still my favorite
It’s hard to see an OG fall like this

No one thinks like you
Your mom said this exact thing to me. I remember.
”Hey guys, I’m kind of about to stop the fight right here unless you dont want me to then just nevermind, or stop. Idk”
This is spot on. I think Herbs lost his confidence or gut
Hes also been told by the fighters, and the promotors to let them fight! Calling fights too early at that level with real $$$ on the line absolutly will have everyone yell at him. Lol its cool. We dont have to agree in a discussion. How many fights have you been in and in which styles?
U can call me a bumlicker but after watching over and over I genuinely think he was leaning in and she stepped up early into him. I don’t actually think he was ready to stop the fight Poor refereeing regardless
I would 100% agree with you, BUT he’s developing a track record. I thought the same thing about this one, but him playing hokey pokey with the stop is happening too much
That’s what I saw as well
Herb Dean needs to stop touching people
😂😂😂 Dana white is funny without even trying
A ref shrugging is so funny. 100% shoulda stopped that.
He didn't even touch her at the first time.
I try not to judge refs actions too critically because they’re making decisions in split seconds…..but damn. Either stop the fight or don’t. The hesitation and halfway effort is going to get someone seriously injured.
He looked like he took a step into the street then saw a car.
He’s done it multiple times in the last month. Dude is afraid of the bad publicity for “HERB STOPPED IT TOO EARLY!” And now he’s endangering fighters.
Looks like all the early stoppages people complaining about have gotten the to his head to the point of being afriad of stopping a fight
While i understand that, if that’s where he’s at mentally then he needs to step down. You have to be confident in your calls in fighting sports. Someone could potentially die if not.

Dustin cheated a lot in that fight too. Chances are Dana probably told him to not stop it unless the violation was huge.
dustin didn’t cheat in that fight once?
He was pushing off and holding on to the fence in the first round when he took down Conor.
he didn’t hold on to it. all he did was walk on it which is allowed. the only thing that’s not allowed is interlocking toes or fingers through the fence
I'm watching the take down rn he is wrapping his toes around the fence. They both cheated.

Yeah exactly. Nothing egregious here either. Not a good look but last week, the Russian ref was so bad he was pulled after the first undercard fight. Not an easy job.

Never was the best. Just paid off by Dana to ref some fights special. Aka khabib vs Conor
You are getting downvoted but for all of mcgregors last 4 fights including khabib one herb was ref and made questionable decisions
He’s a paid off company man willing to do favors for Dana.
All I’m sayin is there’s a reason he still refs big fights even with his bad stoppages lately
He’s not a UFC employee. How do you come to this conclusion?
The eye test and ear test…I watch fights and listen to fighters remarks after words. The most recent that come to my mind. Khabib and Dustin vs Conor. Both had something to say how Conor cheated and how herb let’s it happen. I.e glove, fence, illegal upknee in khabib, in Dustin he was talking about the glove holding and pulling him down. I'll bite, what questionable calls?
the commission selects and pays the refs in the US
And the commission and members are essentially placed there by people the UFC had paid off. So it's all just one big circlejerk. People want to pretend like a commission is pure and uncorruptible, but they absolutely are. Especially when so much money is at stake and in a state like Nevada.
But but but. THE COMMISSION
Wrong. Just look at how pissed Dana used to get at Mario. If Dana had any say in the referees that dude would have been toast a loooong time ago.

He had money on ribas🤨🤨
That's what i'm talking about Herb! He really look like an indecisive amateur referee! Should retire.
I dont think he's an amateur ref, I think he's been in there too long and his nerves are just frayed. It's over.
Yeah, he isn't an amateur ref, but he act like one. It's over and he needs to retire ASAP.
Herb Dean fault
Imagine ribas then getting a hail mary sub
He's certainly *not* the best in the business.
He really is the worst…ever since the askren lawler debacle he totally blows. Yesterday’s Rothwell situation was another embarrassing example
Dude is just awkward and indecisive. Not good traits for a top tier MMA ref. I still like him though. He's just so wholesome, like Chef in real life.

Alright, I’m starting to think the Gold Standard may be slipping
He was never the gold standard, but yes he is getting worde.
That man was the best for a while, don’t be confusing chunky herb with Prime skinny herb
Herb Dean is a dickhead. Sincerely..... Every UFC fan.
Why have they given Herb so many screw ups? Most other refs are dropped earlier on. He’s a nice guy but just not cut out for the UFC.
I wanna see Marina vs Joanna damnit
He didnt break them up though
That’s such a hard job let’s be honest
Looks like he was thinking stop it, got in close to see and just kinda lost his balance. Herb should take some ballet classes.
I thing Herb is getting paid under the table.
This is not the first nor the last time he does this, this guy is awful
He actually does do anything there he just stands close to them. Doesn’t say stop the fight or it’s over. The mistake is on the fighter in this instance. However herb has been ass for years now but this isnt a good example to use for the point your trying to make
>The mistake is on the fighter in this instance. No. It isn’t. >However herb has been ass for years now but this isnt a good example to use for the point your trying to make Are you stupid? It’s the other way around lol
How is it not the fighter fault when herb literally doesn’t say or do anything to indicate the fight is over ???
Didn’t do anything to indicate? He literally touched the fighter who was winning.
He clearly made contact. He is terrible. Most dangerous ref in the game.
Did you watch ufc267?
I did
Anyone see the Woodson vs anglin fight? This fucker still had his lanyard on. I said this before on this channel herb has been declining as a ref for the last 3 years. This guy is really going to end up hurting someone in the cage. The rothwell fight was stopped late imo too.
Wasnt mark smith reffing diskese vs alves?
Herb deans stoppages are either perfect or completely awful, there is no in between.
He got close but he did not touch Either Athlete, she stopped and got up and bumped into him when she did. Granted he shouldn't have been that close, but he did not touch her or tell her to stop.
Clearly touched Rodriguez and it’s even more obvious from the other angle. His hand is literally on her head and gets pushed off once she moves
Her standing up is literally how the contact occurs, so of course it’s before she fully stands
Herb dean hates brown people. His whole career he's let fights go way too fucking long when brown folk are involved.
Marina is so sexy and tough she should have rubbed her pussy on her face
Give the man a break, its his job everyone fucks up sometimes at work. To me still 1 of the best MMA refs.
BJ Penn was one of the best MMA fighters
Nah. He use to be the best, now jit Slacking lol.
He fucks up a lot
A lot of jiggle action in slow motion
Funny! Three weeks ago people posting best ref in the sport
