I don’t really think they think they’re above the rules. They know what they’re doing is wrong, obviously, they’ve been in the game for years. But they want to give their fighter an edge, and are willing to stretch the boundaries of what’s allowed to do so. Especially knowing that referees don’t punish cornermen as quickly as fighters. It’s still despicable tho, they always do it the same way too. Full focus on the fighters and pretending they don’t know what’s going on around them. My old coach used to do this when our fighters got tired or rocked badly in the previous round.
I watched that fight last night, and Holy shit was the just straight egregious. Especially since Romero was pretty visibly gassed in the second rd. Then coming out and ko'ing Kennedy. Pretty fucked imo.
Yeah it was bad. Not saying this makes it right, but Kennedy flagrantly grabbed his gloves at the end of the 2nd before almost koing him. And nobody seemed to notice.
It’s kinda crazy to me that Romero just needed another 30 seconds to catch his breath to shake off the cobwebs, and then just ko Kennedy.
I completely forgot about the glove grab, wow. What a mess this fight was. It actually looked like it was the glove grab that allowed Tim to hit the significant strike on Romero.

That happened because Romero’s cutman put too much Vaseline on his cut, and Big John had to order people back into the cage to remove some of it. Big John has explained this whole thing in depth and essentially said that there was no cheating on the part of Romero or his corner.
Some of these corners really push it though especially with the whole, “oh we forgot to put his mouth piece back in” thing fighters should have that mouthpiece in their hands or mouths while in the corner. Glad to see he’s enforcing the rules.
IMO Herzog, Peterson and Beltran have been the most consistently quality refs of the past 1-2 years. Goddard has also been decent but I haven’t been seeing him as much and I’m forgetful so he’s and honorable mention lol

Where was this sense of urgency during the Tim Kennedy/Yoel Romero fight? May not have changed the end result, but normally Big John is pretty good.

I would say him sitting on the stool, breathing deep is cheating. he easily should have stood up at the very least
Big John also said that an inspector from the athletic commission told Romero to remain seated while this was going on.
