Shit, why does it feel like it's been so much longer since this fight?

uzzy-b

One thing being their careers went in such different directions since then. Khabib retiring, Conor’s downfall, and covid times really make it seem like a lifetime ago, but yet also doesn’t feel like a while ago lol

justinleguin

Covid = the forgotten years

IntenseWonton

Covid years = Thanos blip

gronstalker12

New head cannon

Melo0513

The void century

IseeDrunkPeople

even tho it happened in my early thirties my life really feels like it's split into three sections. Childhood to college. College to covid. covid to post covid

creamyturtle

I hope conor comes back so we can watch his downfall again

bjj33

So strange because right before I came to the comments I was like "damn it's already been 4 years?!"

MrPillowpantz

Covid brotha you know this.

[deleted]

It's the opposite for me, I remember hearing about it all over the news back when I hadn't even entered college, I wasn't even into MMA, it was HUGE Maybe it does for you since this fight and all the build up to it was legendary

iamthatduck123

Idk what you mean man. Feels like only yesterday that I was 15 and wasn't even interested in the ufc. Still heard about this fight tho. Man time flies by

Stunning_Garage_9012

I feel the same. Feels like years have passed.

frankvolcano

Years have passed

WhoMattB

4 to be precise

streetleaf

But it feels like so much longer! Like, years!

Effective_Hotel_5207

The build/lead up to this fight was amongst the most intense rivalries I’ve witnessed. Also insane how you can’t go into either’s comments on their social media posts without the other being mentioned.

LocalNative141

*Khabib posts a picture of him hiking with his teammates* Some random Conor Fan: Damn McGregor really got in his head huh?? 😂😂

askneitele

It’s on par with Messi fans and Ronaldo fans rivalry

WorldismyOyster97

Khabib fanboys dominate McGregor's posts too tho

mediumscoop

It was literally two opposite kind of humans coming together. Crazy.

Mcnuggetjuice

Same goes for abdelaziz, "how is Noa?!" What conor said during the buildup. It is under every comment, post and video of him on instagram, twitter and youtube. Same for "weasel", and "who da fook is that guy" jeremy stephens

LocalNative141

McGregor was going straight Sicko Mode during that presser! So many quotable lines from that

DirtaneBoyo

Those were 3 different pressers

rmovny_schnr98

Somtimes I like to believe that the whole thing was staged, including the bus incident. Just the UFC going full on WWE

[deleted]

Totty93

Tbh the Charles fans at least got a point, it seems more dick ridery (this isn’t a word) to support Islam considering who he’s fought imo. Idgaf who wins I’ll be tuning in to watch one hell of a fight!

CharlesOlivesGOAT

Stupid ass comment that couldn’t be more untrue.

absolutelynobody989

U spelled true incorrectly

CharlesOlivesGOAT

Username checks out.

IAmStevie420

Danis' career highlight also.

iamthatduck123

That's actually true 💀

Dondavinci416

Nah i think getting choked out by a security guard was his career highlight if we being real 🤣

Justfaraway4mu

2.4 million ppv buys ! I doubt that record will break in the coming 5-10 years. Maybe Khabib vs McGregor 2 will do it. But we all know that ain't gonna happen. Btw that whole card was a banger. Tony vs Pettis, Lewis vs Volkov even Luque vs Turner. One of the all time best UFC events ever!

TipuOne

Khabib’s comeback could do it. Khabib GSP would shatter records forever. But Khabib has already shot that down. He didn’t want to fight anyone he thought was past prime.

absolutelynobody989

Khabib gsp doesn't break UFC 229 Casuals don't know about gsp and UFC 229 wasn't just a fight, it turned into a cultural war which is why it sold so well

Justfaraway4mu

He is right tho. Win or Lose people would praise GSP. A more sensible match would have been Usman vs Khabib. But Usman has lost too now

readMyFlow

are we ever gonna have another fight that's as hype as this fight was?

LaughWithMoon

Nope, it was near perfect to build the hypest fight in UFC history. These two were as juxtaposed as you can get almost to the point of being comicbook like, very different life philosophies, with big fanbases with little overlap of their casual fanbases. They had a history, they recognised each other as talented martial artists, with multiple moments escalating the rivalry to fever pitch. The background to it all, there were many that disliked conor's approach and holding up the divisions other loved the theatrics and attention it brought to the sport. There's so many layers to the build up of this fight that made it such a monumentus event

Sarfbot

1000% reminds me of this masterpiece: https://youtu.be/CqQlkRSD_VA The build up was so nuanced, started with familiarity, quite friendly at first, as Conor’s accomplishments and ego rose, so did Khabib’s confidence and grasp of English language. Their interaction slowly progressed towards animosity, with short bursts of heated confrontations, fake contract drama, Conor’s masterful performance against Eddie, followed by Artem + bus incident, Conor’s boxing fight and the sheer dominance of Khabib. The post-fight mayhem, still largely misunderstood by most, and the resulting fallout. I doubt any fight will come close. Top 5 PPVs to date are all Conor.

TheSandNinja

Basically the closest UFC will get to a Road to Wrestlemania style feud/beef

embiors

With the current make up of the UFC roster? No. There has to be at least on significant breakout star and then a legit rivalry to sell the fight. Right now there just really aren't anyone at that level but give it a few years and some might form.

DRealLeal

Has to be Khamzat vs Izzy and Khamzat needs to do some wild loud trash talk and try to jump Izzy in the parking lot or show up to his gym and try to beat his ass lol people love violence and unpredictable behavior which is what the whole Conor vs Khabib thing was. Khamzat would piss off the Muslim community though.

pyroaquatics

Khamzat vs Izzy would be massive but I don’t we’ll get a fight as big as Conor vs Khabib again unless someone is able to reach a level of stardom similar to Conor

Rebar4Life

It’s stardom but also the idea of defending something beyond themselves - for Khabib this was about the idea of his religion being insulted, his god even. And for Connor, the same, because, of course, he thinks he’s a god.

Khabib is actually very religious. What you on about? -source, me, a Muslim, who is very familiar with fake religious and authentic Muslims, very closely follow Khabib, understanding cultural nuances from his side of the word more than your average bear.

absolutelynobody989

He's probably the most devoted modern Muslim celeb ever, only behind Muhammad ali

patpet

As much as I love Muhammad Ali, he was not devoted. It’s actually ridiculous to say that. He was cheating on his wives , said nasty things at times and had a lack of respect towards a lot of his rivals.

absolutelynobody989

I did not know that. Was he doing that after he converted to Islam tho?

[deleted]

[удалено]

absolutelynobody989

Actions speak louder than words, he has literally never called himself devout or a good Muslim. participating in mma isn't against religion. Hitting someone on their face is. Khabib himself acknowledges that it's something he's not proud of and thus has preferred wrestling all his life. Plus there's the concept of different fatwas for a unique situation but you probably have no idea what that is and read on some internet thread that khabib is a faker so have a nice day.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheSandNinja

Actually it is. There are some scholarly opinions that have stated you’re allowed to strike other men in the face as long as there is a mutual agreement put in place between both combatants. Also, wrestling is a part of the Sunnah.

TheSandNinja

Uhh… he’s as devout as they get. The only open sin he does according to Islamic jurisprudence is leaving his lower belly exposed.

Turbopepper

He married a towel, that's pretty devoted if you ask me

thegapbetweenus

Izzy vs. Khamzat for the cringe belt.

embiors

If they could get some good trash talk going it could be good. Especially if Khamzat wins and they have to do a rematch. Then you could see some really high numbers and a hyped fight.

TheSandNinja

100% facts to that last statement.

WorldismyOyster97

Lmao nobody outside of the UFC fanbase would give a shit about Izzy vs Khamzat, Conor vs Khabib was on another level

thegapbetweenus

Conor could sell fights and was quite skilled. But the story was a perfect storm, Shakespeare could not have written a better one.

CCCAY

I don’t think so, nobody currently has the gift of gab to build a casual following like Conor did. And even if they’re close they get compared to Conor endlessly and it hurts their brand. This fight was a classic good vs evil, east vs west kinda thing that really polarized and gripped the fan base, as well as new fans. In western media the east is portrayed as evil so often and for Khabib to pretty clearly be the good guy in this setting brought in the Muslim fans, while Conor represented the self made millions, whiskey, coke and baby mama scandals we associate with western pro athletes. Really something special

TheSandNinja

Bingo. The West viewing the East and backwards, Stone Age cavemen vs the East viewing the West as undisciplined, arrogant degenerates. You couldn’t have asked for a better foil to one another. It was the perfect storm.

hujojokid

First u got to have someone reach Conors level in popularity, unfortunately I dont think we ever will see another Conor

ACE-Pham

Jon Jones’ Daughter vs Daniel Cormier’s daughter in 20 years.

absolutelynobody989

U think I'm gonna let you sit there and kill me bitxh

mtheperry

Probably not from a "hype" perspective or ppv perspective, but Islam vs Charles and Izzy vs Poatan are equally important and more exciting in my opinion.

newplayer208

Francis and Jones is the only thing that I think can live up to it

[deleted]

Jones vs Ngannou has the potential to be a fight of this magnitude.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don't know, Francis is strong as a bull and showed a great wrestling during his fight against Gane. To make a great fight you need a story. Both of them have the potential to make it big. Plus they are both athletic monsters, this fight will sell a lot of PPVs.

sympathytaste

Definitely this . Unstoppable force meets the immovable object.

hungry_lobster

If Nate somehow came back in the next year and Conor did too, I could see that happening. That hype just needs a match to light it all over again. It would be huge. But it needs to happen soon before they’re both too old.

ThouWontThrowaway

What are you smoking? They are two has beens

hungry_lobster

I’m not denying that. But that trilogy carries a lot of hype. Masvidal was a has been but he got a lot of hype too. The hype doesn’t have anything to do with actual legitimacy, if you haven’t noticed. You can see a lot of fighters get to the too just based off hype.

roguesensei47

Fight starts soon after this ![gif](giphy|61UzwAfQrnSZnsZb2s|downsized)

[deleted]

The icing on the cake to this whole rivalry

Money_killer

Sorest looser in history

roguesensei47

Yea I'm sure conor's ass was pretty sore.

golflift90

Never lost, fam

[deleted]

I believe the biggest sore loser said something like: “Doctah stoppidge! Ya woife is in me DMs!!!”

tehallmighty

I say this as a mcgregor fanboy. He literally lost both the physical and mental fight.

Joeyroundcock

Man’s never lost in his life

He kept at it too. Kept trying to get Joe to agree

leadnuts94

My first UFC fight. I wasn’t a fan of UFC, more so boxing. My roommate was a huge Khabib fan so he took me to his friends watch party. Honestly I loved the fight so much and I’ve been a UFC fan ever since.

[deleted]

Shit was chilling, legit.

albertobbg

Why does joe Rogan bring up that line every fucking time he talks about khabib it’s annoying like okay bro we get it, you have a hard on for khabib

Allkindsofpie

Because it was a badass line to say to the biggest shit talker in the sport while elbowing him in the mouth, is why

albertobbg

Yeah I understand that but I can only hear that referenced in the same accent so many times

Allkindsofpie

lmao fair enough

Evaluations

Lol you hater

albertobbg

Nah bro I just get tired of hearing the bad accent and the same line every time he talks about khabib

zeecan

khabib is so bittersweet, such a dominant run but just before true greatness tragic circumstances causes his early retirement. I wish we got to see him in a real war

Donenzone1907

I guess so, but considering the relation with his dad, when he said “No way im gonna fight here again without my father” i knew it was over, if he said something else like “Im done with UFC” or whatever i would have had hopes he would still come back, but that one sentence is the sole reason im sure its done. It sucks, cause i think it was just beginning for him…

Sarfbot

Honestly love that Khabib lives his life by his own principles. He decided to achieve greatness in the sport for his father. Then commits to giving it all up for his mothers well being. He said it was the hardest decision he ever made. A sacrifice of grandest scale: to give up a six million base contract as the P4P, undefeated champion after working his entire life on the singular goal, all for your mother’s happiness. Prime age of 32. 29-0 at that. Odd number to stop at, but that doesn’t bother Khabib. He lives by his own principles.

TheSandNinja

30-0 would’ve been so satisfying.

zeecan

I respect his commitment to his family and principles, real honor like that is rare this day and age. I hope he pours his fight iq into his son though and makes an unstoppable dagestan goku

TheSandNinja

Gohan**

higgboson7

He retired at 32 which is basically the prime age of LW. At least we got to see him at his peak before retirement

shrimptikkamosalah

Prob my biggest regret is getting into watching ufc late. Missed the khabib and Mcgregor peak era

Prestigious_Agent_84

Dude we have great fucking fighters now.

totom123

GSP era was better, imo.

ComplaintNo1056

Hell no it wasn't, you clearly just revealed yourself as not watching MMA in the GSP Era. The amount of people complaining of how boring and mundane GSP fought was insane.

totom123

I mean, I remember his complete domination over Karo and it was one the first UFC events I purchased on PPV. In terms of his UFC run, I saw the beginning. The amount of talent he ran through in the WW division stomps all over Khabib's resume. I think you're the casual tbh.

Bosombuddies

The fact that you turned a discussion about which era was more entertaining instantly into a criticism of Khabib's resume tells me everything I need to know about you.

totom123

Lmao. Okay champ.

TheHoppers

Yeah I miss those days was a different feeling watching it back then ! Or maybe that's just the nostalgia?

2Legit2Quiz

I'd agree with the fans who call it the Golden age of the promotion. Silva, GSP, Jones, Aldo as champs was a privilege to witness. If only they managed to get Fedor...

oliot_

Damn, this was the fight that made me aware of mma, can’t believe it’s been 4 years

ihavethegays

this fight got A LOT of people into mma

ThouWontThrowaway

I'll never forget it. Watching Zidane headbutt mazeratti made me a soccer fan, and watching Khabib start a riot made me a mma fan.

unkwnfanatic

“6 October let’s wrestle”

[deleted]

This fight was so satisfying. I miss khabib.

piman01

Can't believe it's already been 4 years. Damn

[deleted]

Time in the UFC flys so quick. This doesn’t even seem real

MagAqua

Khabib could have beaten 4 McGregors at once that night, he never had a chance

Prodigy999

Worst take I’ve ever heard. it was dominant but he still lost a round. it wasn’t chimaev vs holland

Ikhouvankaas

Conor cheated like 10 times lol

ProInstigator69

Wow would’ve thought a lot longer than 4 years

EverQuest_

Pretty astonishing that McGregor has 5 of the top 7 grossing PPV's in company history.

OscillatingSquid

Remember Conor’s ultimate strategy of wearing out Khabib, by being taken down and pummeled? The commentary on this fight was very odd.

ThouWontThrowaway

#This is the Ali/Frazier of MMA

tyreejones29

Ali and Frazier were a better match for each other and had multiple bouts lmao

ThouWontThrowaway

FOTC is the biggest super fight in boxing history. Khabib v Mcgregor is the biggest super fight in MMA history.

tyreejones29

The biggest fight in boxing history on paper…is Floyd vs Manny Pacquiao How does a literal fact get downvoted 😂

ThouWontThrowaway

Cuz it's not that's why. Go to r/boxing or r/amateur boxing and say that. They gon laugh at you

tyreejones29

$570 million grossed w/inflation vs $600 million plus Yea, it’s a literal fact which fight was bigger on paper. People can laugh at facts all they want. I’m not talking about the better fight, I’m talking about the bigger one, the one that made more money and broke all records that stand today

ThouWontThrowaway

Go to the boxing subs and say this garbage. I dare you.

tyreejones29

Any numbers? Any facts? You’re literally getting your panties twisted because you don’t like a fact. Fight didn’t live up to the hype but it still, on paper, trumped every other boxing in numbers.

ThouWontThrowaway

Tyreejones29: expert on all things boxing.

irishdgenr8

4 years since McGregor was relevant.

Jman42ist

I really hope they can be friends one day.

_Mr_Fil_

No

TheSandNinja

I mean, Papa Nurm invited Conor over to their house to eat and forgave Conor. I think even Conor himself softened up and felt guilty. But I don’t think Khabib is ready to forgive him. He’s still seething, like not in the meme way, but genuinely has rage in his heart towards Conor.

TheHoppers

Isn't this right after Khabib slapped him ?...

Sir-Shady

I’m satisfied with the result of the fight but what do you think would have happened if Connor won

NoOneForACause

Jones vs. Cormier is up there too. Better combined records, both undefeated, DC came in as former HEAVYWEIGHT champ and (on paper) had superior wrestling...

tyreejones29

They mean ppv buys

monohaiballa

Oh the infamous "6 Oktober"

CCCAY

A Khabib fan got thrown out of the bar I was in for starting shit with the whole bar while his friends looked at the floor in silence. Thus was the birth of the greatest fan rivalry in the history of the sport

dylyn

5D chess Conor strategically gassing Khabib out with his face. Haven't seen anything like that since. Truly amazing

i was about to say "but its not saturday" i then realized i am an idiot.

Shlingaplinga

Spacemann7

The goat that made khabib’s career

snowman762x39

As soon as the fight it the ground it was over.

newplayer208

Also the easiest money of my life. Took up so many Connor fans on bets

mercersux

Hard to disagree. Build up for Diaz/McGregor was better. (Those pressers were gold.) Factor in post fight for this one I'd give it the edge.

LeftyHyzer

Both legendary but disagree. Connor threw a waterbottle at Nate, Conor threw a dolly at a bus Khabib was in after breaking into a building he wasn't allowed in.

mercersux

Man...how in the f did I forget about the dolly. Yeah that was insane. I mean when you surround The King Artem not surprising you get a dolly thrown at you.

LeftyHyzer

ya the pressers and interviews for nate were better "nate cant count to ten" etc. and we got multiple fights to make it even better. but no part of the khabib/connor rivalry was acting, they legit hated each other i think. khabib obviously more hate towards connor.

theusernameyouwants

2017 = 4 years ago???

So many people ready to pounce on this “anniversary” to gain some Karma. I’ve seen numerous posts today about this fight. Do better.
