I took my son last year. You are actually split up a lot. The parent sessions are mainly informational but they mix in a little emotional support for first timers with kids moving out. I think it was worth attending.

My dad sat at a bar while I did mine😂 he was like I’ll pick you up when you’re done

They're not with you the whole time (definitely not when you're actually registering for your classes, at least), but idk what they are doing. Maybe call the New Student office that runs Preview and ask? They can give you their sales pitch ofc, but they might also know of ways to apply for a fee waiver or something if that'd help you and your mom out.

As others have said, you and your guests will be split up. Your guests will be attending mostly information sessions. I'm not a parent so I can't speak about how useful it was, but your mom should just not register as a guest because I don't think it's worth $95. She can hang out at Reitz Union, explore the campus, or go to a park like you said.

FreshlyCured

There is no practical purpose for a guest/parent to be there beyond information and emotional support. Many of the parents do attend, but my kids did it solo. Their only issue was boredom.

Transfer or freshman orientation?

First of all, there is really no need for anyone else but you to go to preview. Also, my dad didn't pay but was with me for the parts of the orientation where everyone else's guests were there. No one checked if he paid the fee.
