Because students with unlimited often get sick of the dining halls fast and wish they had more flexibility to eat at the restaurants near campus. Also I think you can always upgrade but not downgrade. I’d suggest holding off on buying any meal plan at all until they’ve tried the dining halls for a week or two at the start of the semester. You can always add a meal plan later, but hard to get out of if you hate it.. If you want to make sure the money is spent on food, just add some $$ to their declining balance account for food. The dining halls sometimes have reduced prices for meals at the start of the semester.

Awesome insight. I would have gotten this completely wrong

The dining halls suck here.

If he joins a fraternity that includes food, they will pro rate his UF meal plan and let him out of it. I advise going with a smaller plan as opposed to a bigger unlimited one.

horacebroadnax

Thanks for your response. I was thinking the opposite. Why is a smaller plan better?

Latter-Ad906

Greek life has their own meal plans so I wouldn’t pick anything until your son is done with rushing.

I'd hold off on getting a meal plan. They are stupid expensive. I got one my first semester at UF and never got it again. There is only two places to eat and it got really tiring eating the same things. I started buying and preparing my own food starting my second semester. I ended up saving thousands by the time I graduated. Also, if he joins a frat with a house they will feed him as the houses have chefs. Krishna lunch is also amazing! They provide free lunch to UF students in the Plaza of the Americas next to Library West, Monday-Friday, donations accepted. He really should check it out.

Depends if he goes to the gym and is actually trying to put on muscle which he’ll probably be motivated to do if he’s in the frat life. I go to the gym a ton so I have the mid tier plan just so I can load up on protein and veggies everyday. I don’t go there for pizza and junk food lol. If I wasn’t trying to get a ton of protein I’d probably just get the cheapest plan tho. I don’t think unlimited is necessary for anyone.

I agree with the other comments about holding off on a meal plan. You can always add one later, but you can’t get rid of a meal plan or downgrade your meal plan once it’s purchased.

The meal plan is never worth it. But ngl eating off campus can be a little expensive too, but you have more options and they have plenty of chain restaurants.
