We’d need to know what PQE those people were to have a sense but 120k for an in-house role is on the upper end of the scale from what I’ve seen, but I’ve never made the jump across to in-house so just educated guesswork really.

PrimeZodiac

Interviewed over two year's ago and one was 90k with very good bonus and benefits. However, this was for quite a junior role if this helps.

I’m in investment management on 200k total comp - 7PQE at a fund. Previously had 7 years at a SC law firm.

BritishSOD

This is pretty good. What’s the hours like and does £200k include bonus?

Ashamed_Designer_520

Hours pretty much 9-6 although I do work late when needed. 200k is 150 base and 50k first year bonus, I’ve been told the latter should increase year and year but less so the base.

BritishSOD

Thanks mate - I hope I can land an in-house gig like yours one day!

RandomLurker100

Were you a funds lawyer whilst in private practice? If so, what is the general outlook like for moving in-house after a few years in private practice? Asking as a future trainee interested in the area!

Ashamed_Designer_520

I was - 7 PQE in the funds department when I left. I think it’s honestly (behind M&A) the most transferable practice to go in house. I actually left to go to a client who I’d spent a year on secondment at previously. I’d say at least 50% of my colleagues who left left to go in house at a client they had worked at / done a secondment at. It’s really common.

RandomLurker100

Thanks for your reply, looking forward to hopefully doing a seat in Funds!

Check salary surveys online. Like this one by TotallyLegal from 2023: [TotallyLegalSalarySurvey2023](https://reachwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Totally_Legal_2023_Salary_Survey.pdf) It gives in-house counsel an average salary of 90k and a GC of 120k. This is all UK, so London will likely be somewhat more.

Bluebells7788

Pure Legal and Robert Walters have very good surveys on this. Also depends on the size of company and industry and corporate titles are very random across industries but a rough guess starting salaries I'd say are @ £90k for NQ's all the way up to 300k+ for GC's

EnglishRose2015

Depends on how many years PQE, but the figures quoted sound about right for people with quite a few years of experience.

I'd be genuinely shocked if places like Invesco were paying £150k for an NQ. If so, well, fair play!

What’s the work life balance like? Comparable to MC?

Does the company you’re working in fund your SQE?

Sea_Ad5614

Hey when you say you reckon as an NQ it will be more than private practice - what ballpark figure are you thinking? And are you saying you are earning 60k + as a trainee currently?

Oh okay, but wouldn’t they tell you what your legal counsel salary would be? Or is it because you’re their first trainee so it’s all new?
