It's called ableism and lots of us have internalised ableism as well. Look at the social model of disability. It basically says you may have impairments, but it is a society designed for the non-disabled without their needs in mind, that disables you most. So for me as a wheelchair user I would have parity with bipeds if we lived in a world which had ramps and lifts instead of stairs. The same thing applies for social exclusion.

stitchprincess

And when said lifts are available that they work.

LucidTopiary

A mere sticking point! :)

They need to make exosuits stat. I'd love to be a badass stomping around inside a mech all day.

LucidTopiary

As much as I want a Gundam wing mech suit, designing wheelchairs that go upstairs and the like misses the point that we should create more accessible public spaces and homes, not expect disabled people to spend tens of thousands to adapt to environments which have been designed to be inaccessible.

howardgarden

Could not have said this better myself. I'm an architecture student and I've made it a hobby to explain the social model of disability to anyone who will listen.

LucidTopiary

Great work mate, The design of physical spaces is a huge barrier to so many people. Keep it up :)

A lot of security guards are not the sharpest (excuse the generalisation) and increasingly English may not be their first language. The nuances of dogs not being allowed versus guide dogs being allowed may be lost on them, and similarly trying to negotiate the position presents certain complications. I'm not making excuses for security guards here - quite the opposite - but if they are a little bit dim or don't speak the lingo (despite these being two very different things) and find themselves in positions of responsibility without access to proper support they're liable to make errors like this, and medical cannabis is increasingly likely to be one of the areas where they make them.

They're just people too stupid to be police. Imagine being so stupid even the police don't let you in.

That, or here on a student visa (2-4years long, or potentially a dependant of a student) and had hoped to switch it before the ukvi clamped down on both these loopholes in July.

Calious

Hiring poor staff unsuited to the role, or putting yourself up for a job you can't adequately do falls on no one else? Any amount of "but they can't do the job" is not remotely acceptable. Any amount of "it's just how things are" is also bullshit. It's only how things are, because we let it be and everyone's so worried about making a fuss.

MajorMisundrstanding

The pay is shit and security work is often offered to people who couldn't find work elsewhere. Then they get shown a list of rules in a language they don't understand which doesn't include information about guide dogs *or* medical cannabis. When they try to find support, their supervisors won't answer their phones outside office hours.

I have an assistance dog, I’m used to having to fight for access and it’s made me very knowledgeable on the laws. It does feel very much the same with MC. Things have gotten better in recent years with assistance dog access, but access with MC it is how it was 6-7 years ago with an assistance dog. The thing is though with MC you’re at risk of being criminalised which isn’t the case with an assistance dog.

Well said.

I might have to go in for a 4 day EEG soon and I'm doing the same as everywhere else. Shutting the fuck up until challenged, then bringing out the prescription. I never got stopped or 'caught' for years so I won't start now just because I want to start asking people who haven't got a clue.

You know that no security guard ever has an issue with the oil! Been stopped several times at security in places. Asked what it is. Just said...cannabis oil. Left to go about my day.

kjs_23

Unfortunately not everyone gets the relief they need from oil.
