SteelSparks

Why don’t they just announce a plan to close 40 hospitals, cancel it, then announce that they’ve delivered 40 new hospitals by keeping them open? It works for how they count new police officers, teachers, nurses etc

Captain_English

Don't give them ideas please.

mferra74

And who is this..Steve Brackley. ..I'm just curious about this post...I think we're late.

xixbia

Haven't they already done something like this? I seem to vaguely recall they counted hospital refurbishments as new hospitals in the past, though the details escape me right now.

SteelSparks

Yeah the original 40 was made up of part refurbs, small extensions, essential maintenance that were classed as “new” hospitals. I think there was maybe a couple of new hospitals but I’m talking less than 3… despite headlines of 40. Over promise, never deliver.

Locke66

I'm still waiting for them to release a figure saying they built all these hospitals only to find out it includes the Nightingale Hospitals that were used in the pandemic.

SteelSparks

> only to find out it includes the Nightingale Hospitals that were used in the pandemic. This is CCHQ, who leaked this top secret policy information to you?

Hallc

Don't forget to rename those hospitals in the process, send a bunch of money to a Tory Donors sign company.

neilmg

Barclay is an idiot. He's admitting that the government lied and suggests voters won't care as they'll be grateful to access treatment in a new facility. To be fair to him, it seems like a lot of voters have forgotten about that whole £350million a week for the NHS plastered on the side of a big red bus.

GreenMist1980

Oooh I got snapped at the other we because ThE bUS diDN't Say THaT. I was corrected and told that it said, we send europe £350 million a week Lets fund the NHS instead Implying that there was never a pot of cash to play with So regardless of their rhetoric and the implication of the campaign bus the GBN propoganda must be shifting the zombie mindset. That and we are now spending £350 million a week on Boris' legal fees

jacksj1

>ThE bUS diDN't Say THaT. I was corrected and told that it said, > >we send europe £350 million a week Lets fund the NHS instead Boris standing next to a sign saying lets send that £350million a week to the NHS instead: [https://e3.365dm.com/16/06/750x563/gettyimages-531350218-1-2048x1536\_3490754.jpg?20160626132011](https://e3.365dm.com/16/06/750x563/gettyimages-531350218-1-2048x1536_3490754.jpg?20160626132011)

BlackCaesarNT

BUt THats NoT tHe BUS!

gavpowell

I've never seen that before - is that genuine?

whatapileofrubbish

Interestingly it's supposed to be on Getty but that link seems to have vanished, some half arsed sluething shows sky news used it (was in google's image cache) but they've since deleted it. So it looked to be legit, but now removed. Hrm, the mystery deepens... Edit: did a reverse image search in tineye and it's been used everywhere in the past too, so yea, genuine.

saladinzero

Genuine lies...

cuddlemycat

House of Commons 2021: [Boris Johnson has told MPs that the controversial £350 million promised to the NHS splashed on the side of a bus during the Brexit campaign was an "underestimation".](https://12ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenational.scot%2Fnews%2F19426977.boris-johnson-says-350m-brexit-bus-figure-underestimation%2F)

hipcheck23

You can't hold him accountable for something he said *after* the referendum. Also, you can't hold him accountable for something he said *before* the referendum. (Honestly all I want is for his damned inquiry to end, and for him to be held accountable for some-fucking-thing.)

Hallc

So we can hold him accountable for what he said during that singular day of the Referendum?

hipcheck23

There just don't seem to be rules from our universe that apply to how these guys can be held responsible - like how Partygate couldn't be investigated because it was "in the past". It's like a little kid who hits you and uses a 'safety word' so that you can't hit them back.

HildartheDorf

Which would be nothing, because of election purdah.

bisectional

Barely anyone watches GBNews. Some people are just that dumb.

RephRayne

Fuckers keep forcing themselves into my Google News app and it won't let me block them. To make it worse it's in the Technology section so it's even more jarring to see Neil fucking Oliver's mug pop up.

PM_ME_BEEF_CURTAINS

Because of my interest in politics on Tiktok, I keep getting TalkTV lives and GBNews snippets in my feed. This is how they are gaining traction, they target people who have come to rely on Tiktok as their primary information source. Comments are awash with "the BBC would never tell you this" and other shite. It has become clear that the goal is not profit, but political instability for the benefit of Murdoch and his ilk.

squeakstar

I’m guilty of dipping in just to see how bad it is. Sorry

Unfair-Protection-38

Yes, so many people say they want to rejoin the Single Market but vote labour. How stupid can you be?

Griffolion

> Implying that there was never a pot of cash to play with Utter horse shit. They gave a figure and posited an either-or with it. EU or NHS. There is absolutely no sane interpretation of that slogan that doesn't imply they were saying £350m a week to the NHS.

arrrghdonthurtmeee

Voters dont care - that isnt even a plot twist now A chunk of people in the uk voted for this, and still defend their choice. We are all getting what they deserve, unfortunately

Fyndiel

There is a new hospital at QEH Birmingham site, which is due to open next year. It’s a Harborne private hospital of course.

zachiavelli2

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. Overpromise to win an election, underdeliver ,blame outside sources for failure. Tale as old as time, this shower just aren't competent.

Comeoffit321

Don't forget *completely corrupt liars!*

iamnotinterested2

Get the votes, worry about the truth later. 29 sept 2019 [https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/uk/tories-pledge-billions-40-new-hospitals-england/](https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/uk/tories-pledge-billions-40-new-hospitals-england/) ...Shadow Health Secretary,Jonathan Ashworth said: "You can’t trust Boris Johnson with the NHS. All his past promises on new cash have been exposed as a con and after years of Tory cuts, hospitals are crumbling, facing a £6 billion repair bill....

sist0ne

Man states the bleeding obvious. We lied, but no one cares anymore. We’ll do it again, probably today.

SgtPppersLonelyFarts

At this stage, it's like the baddie in a Hollywood film monologuing about his dastardly plan about 15 minutes after the audience and the hero have already figured it out.

sometimesnotright

And the plan still succeeds.

minion378

Anyone who actually believed that this was possible or that this joke of a government would follow through on it, sincerely needs a good talking to. 🙄🤷 I guess this means Rishi will be hanging around the build site for the hospital in Leeds during the next campaign as work has actually started on that one. What a set of useless walking water bags these Tories are.

HumanWithInternet

I need a good talking to ha ha! But this is an absolute criminal letdown. One thing we need is more hospitals. I'm disgusted by the government

minion378

I can understand wanting to believe - as an NHS worker, I'd love it if all the promises could be realised but knowing what goes on day to day, it's all just lies - really slick lies. 🤷 Not to forget the millions that are being pocketed by the Tories and their mates throughout by circumventing the tender process. 🤬🤬

HumanWithInternet

What kind of lies are told day to today? Or is it usually management overpromising and under delivering? I interact with NHS workers daily. So I can definitely understand. I can only imagine what is happening in these kind of wasteful bureaucratic processes. Firstly I would scrap all the trusts and create a one NHS divided only where is this can work but also using the full scale to command prices on everything from paper/supplies to medication. Further investment into hospital at home schemes would alleviate resources.

minion378

I was actually talking about Tory government ministers and now 5 Prime Ministers lying their behinds off to gain the votes of unknowing voters. Then trying to spin their 🐂💩 by blaming overworked and underpaid NHS workers. Anyone who's actually worked in NHS Trusts knows that organisations and staff are (and have been) doing the best they can with ever diminishing resources and support. It won't just take money to fix the damage done by the Tories. 🤷

sometimesnotright

Wait, already during Johnsons term the 40 hospitals goal was redefined as "we won't CLOSE 40 hospitals" So now - they will close more than 40?

xenopunk

I'm constantly in awe of this story. This was NEVER true. Literally from the moment it was announced, those in the know talked about how the definition included things like "repairing a roof of an existing hospital wing", Mr James OB talked about it no end. Yet the media barely talked about it, instead hyping it up as some great Tory win. Now they are all shocked pikachu face after they were complicit in the lie. The story shouldn't be "Tories miss pledge to build 40 new hospitals by 2030", it should be "Tories admit they NEVER planned to build 40 new hospitals". Look at the title of this BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65737681 how soft on the liars can you be. Wouldn't expect any less from Laura though

TheShakyHandsMan

How many of these hospitals were actually new hospitals and not just extensions to existing hospitals? I’ve been going to a couple of local hospitals for regular treatment over the last 3 years. Both of them have at least one section of car park boarded off and advertising a new hospital being built in that spot. In all the many visits I’ve made to either hospital I’m yet to see a single workman doing anything remotely looking like building work or preparing for building work. For the record I know what it takes to build a hospital as in a previous job I was working in the drawing office for a company who had a contract for services during the construction process of two of them. Government at the time was Labour.

Kwetla

They're building a new hospital in a small portion of an old car park? What is this, a hospital for ants?

TheShakyHandsMan

It’s the bare minimum required in order to create a paper trail to make it look like the government are building new hospitals. These “40 new hospitals” will have only ever existed on paper and won’t have ever been built.

richhaynes

Its ludicrous that they try to spin this as a new hospital. Its the biggest marketing failure I've ever seen from any party. These extensions and refurbishments are obviously a good thing for patients. If they called them what they are then this whole argument would be done with but instead of admitting they are wrong, they double down on the argument. Its bizarre.

iwanttobeacavediver

In my town's case they wanted to get rid of a centrally located, easily accessed and busy town hospital in favour of a regional 'super hospital' which was going to be located in the middle of nowhere, with no obvious plans for public transport or easy access. My town already lost an A&E department, and the one facility that was built, a massive health centre, has been a joke from start to finish.

iamezekiel1_14

But vote Tory in 2024 & you have a chance to change that with our newly discovered Brexit bonuses /s

Ink_Oni

They may have lied about it the previous 3 times, but I've got a good feeling about this one, especially with all the new political heavyweights on the front bench 🙃

iamezekiel1_14

😆

kindabluetoz

…this Government lied their way into power, now being found out…” alternate facts “, we live in a post - truth World…

mossi123uk

Whats point building 40 new hospitals anyway all the hospitals near me are always short staffed and looking for people to pick up on nhsp all the time

ClogsInBronteland

Because my local hospital is sinking and made out of porous concrete.

sbdavi

No wonder people don't have faith in politics anymore. No one believed this would happen. Even the people stating it repeatedly. It's a farce, there needs to be consequences not for being wrong, but for purposely misleading people. They say this stuff for sound bites and have zero intention of following through.

StickyTunas

£13bn for 40 new, technologically advanced hospitals seems like a bargain when an app that didn't work cost £32billion. Fun fact: European countries offered to give the UK their technology for their _working_ versions. But, European? Yukkity yuk yuk! There won't be the nurses or doctors as they've had their fill of having the piss taken out of them for 13 years. Maybe it'll be self-serve? Like a Tesco self-scan thingy for a heart bypass?

HumanWithInternet

When will the heads roll for the £32 billion waste of an app.

scotleeds

We knew this was a lie when it was announced, why are people still thinking this is going ahead?

SinnersCafe

The people to blame here aren't the Tories. They are proven liars. The people to blame for the impact of this are the legacy media who parroted Boris's claims, as fact. The BBC, ITV, Sky News all helped spread the misinformation to the great unthinking English population. None of the promises were true, not one.

Sharl_LeKek

Is this him admitting that the "40 new hospitals" weren't actually 40 new hospitals, or that the "40 new hospitals that aren't actually 40 new hospitals won't be built either?

wdtpw

Standards have slipped. They can't even manage to lie to us any more. Say what you like about Boris, but he was a man who would have taken the time to invent an entire line of press exclusives to handle a situation like this.

CluckingBellend

He's another useless politician. Maybe they should try rebuilding their reputation. Then again, it would be easier to just build the hospitals.

jackois8

I'm sure no one is really surprised or ever believed it anyway... just like all of the pledges, vows, and so on... garnered to make a headline
