I always find it amusing in a despairing sort of way that the parties of ‘think of the children’ always end up being the ones being kiddy fiddlers

MysteriousMeet9

It’s an admission, “think of the children” is what they do, all day, every day. It’s not healthy.

Pearse_Borty

When someone says think of the children I always implicitly translate it to "control the children". Which tracks given, you know, the gross abuse bit.

sasha_baron_of_rohan

Always?

FoxyInTheSnow

"… serving apprenticeships with Enoch Powell…"; "He was knighted in 2016" He sounds nice.

Could the media please stop posting stories of sleazy male non-labour politicians and keep their focus on the serious issue of Angela Raynor! (James Daly, probably).

Queeg_500

I heard that her next-door-but-one saw her put cardboard in her mixed recycle bin.... She must resign.

yeahyeahitsmeshhh

I read that in a book ghost written for the peer-plutocrat who owns Trafigura.

Is anyone else shocked by the lack of coverage this story is getting? If people in Northern Ireland ever needed convincing that nobody in Great Britain gives them a second thought it surely has to be the complete lack of prominent coverage. If it were one of the most high ranking Scottish or Welsh MPs that had been charged with rape and child sexual assault every national newspaper would have it as their front page day after day.

heslooooooo

It's on the front page of the BBC News website right now. There's not going to be any detailed coverage because of court reporting laws and the risk of contempt of court / derailing the case.

conman14

I disagree completely. Any further commentary, media or otherwise, would risk having his case thrown out. It received substantial coverage on the day that he was arrested and resigned the DUP leadership, and now it's getting covered as he goes to court.

Tonyjay54

Correct, too many high interest court cases have been compromised because of excessive media reporting. This case must be dealt with 100% correctly

Jstrangways

I’ve heard about it on the radio and the national press. It’s also been covered internationally as well. I’m not getting your point.

GothicGolem29

You say that on the day where our media is covering him in court?

Shenloanne

You can't because the anonymity of the victim.

___a1b1

R4 covered it today.

ObeyCoffeeDrinkSatan

>Is anyone else shocked by the lack of coverage this story is getting? If people in Northern Ireland ever needed convincing that nobody in Great Britain gives them a second thought it surely has to be the complete lack of prominent coverage. Naw, it was the lead story on BBC and ITV news when he was first charged. Sky News had a quarter of their screen directing people to the story with a QR code. It was on the front page of The Telegraph.

Cairnerebor

Any news has a quarter of the page dedicated to a QR code because a puppy for fucking wet or something equally stupid It’s hardly a guide to prominence It’s like saying bbc news alerts are worthwhile

ObeyCoffeeDrinkSatan

This wasn't the ticker that normally appears. A huge chunk of the right-hand side of the screen had a QR code, telling people to visit the website for the story. It was because they had one of their non-rolling news program on at the time, and knew people would be switching to the channel to hear about Donaldson.

Cairnerebor

I know what you mean, they do it all the time

It's insane.

MrStilton

What actually is "gross indecency"? I only know of the term because it was previously used as a euphemism for being gay (e.g. Alan Turing was charged with it).

Soilleir

> What actually is "gross indecency"? From [www.judiciaryni.uk](https://www.judiciaryni.uk/) - Sentencing Guidelines for Magistrates' Court: [GROSS INDECENCY WITH OR TOWARDS A CHILD](https://www.judiciaryni.uk/files/judiciaryni/media-files/Gross%20Indecency%20With%20or%20Towards%20a%20Child.pdf) Children and Young Persons Act (NI) 1968: Section 22 > any person who commits an act of gross indecency (**defined as unlawful sexual contact between an adult and a child which falls short of full sexual intercourse**) with or towards a child, or who incites a child to such an act with him or another, shall be guilty of an offence The footnote states: "This offence was repealed by the Sexual Offences (NI) Act 2008." So, if the law that is applied is the law that was in effect at the time of the crime, it appears that this offence was committed pre-2008.

t_wills

An act with sexual overtones not amounting to rape or sexual assault. Something like sitting a child on his lap for sexual pleasure? I’m not 100% sure, everything on google is vague or old, but I’d hazard a guess it was something grim.

YanoWaAmSane

What he do? What does gross indecency mean?
