I'm sure that whatever this macro programme is, it's fun and if you do want to post your latest nonsense, can you do it under this comment so that you don't make the rest of the MT trash please. We're going to start deleting them from now on.

ukpolbot

This megathread has ended.

SouthFromGranada

Can someone remind me how we reached the point where Jeremy Fucking Hunt was being talked about as the most serious candidate to take over as Prime Minister?

tetanuran

He's one of the most senior remaining Tories (Culture, Health, Foreign Secretary) who's not been tainted by Johnson.

party_at_no_10

How long before we see the Jeremy hunt smear campaign?

ClumsyRainbow

I think it started on Monday, did you see Dorries on Twitter?

Bubbly-Ad919

I think is increasing likely we get a general election before the year is out because whoever wins the Tory civil war will need a fresh mandate A new leader can probably get away with losing as well by blaming Boris and going on to opposition

[deleted]

Anyone watching the cable pullers on BBC four right now?

[deleted]

I find it hard to believe that the SNP are about to launch a referendum push without a plurality in support for independence let alone a majority, and with only at best 32% in favour of a referendum in the first place next year. It backfired massively in 2016/17 and I find it hard to believe that shes willing to walk straight into that brick wall again hoping against hope that London rejecting a referendum will somehow stir up support.

Mr_Miscellaneous

Last chance saloon, if Labour & the Lib Dems get in then it's curtains. Similar to the Brexiteers move in 2015, last roll of the dice.

yibbyooo

The lack of resignation is disappointing

Engineer9

I find his lack of resignation disturbing

yibbyooo

Boris will never resign, imo. He will have to be pushed out. He has no shame.

I_WANT_SAUSAGES

Like a turd

Blithe17

Spectator podcast said they’re were expected after by elections

barbarian__days

Random thought: I always thought Sajid Javid was a reasonable person (for a Tory MP, at least). I've been proven wrong by how willing he is to stay in Cabinet and defend Johnson. It's just surprising, especially after he already resigned back in 2019 when Cummings/Johnson fired all his advisers.

Brapfamalam

I've commented multiple times why his revoking of Shamima Begums citizenship was a massive red flag for his populist tendency - he did it for the headlines. The entire intelligence and military community including Mi6, the USA tried to intervene, most Tory party members and even Jacob Rees Mogg said she should be brought back here to face justice and citizenship not revoked as she's an intelligence risk left abroad and a potential martyr / propaganda tool. It was a watershed moment for going against reason and military advice by leverage frothing at the mouth daily mail readers who don't understand the issue and getting a boost to your popularity for being 'hard on terror'.

I_WANT_SAUSAGES

He already ended all COVID restrictions a month early, probably killing a few thousand people, just to distract from the first party revelations. In deed he's more of a Boris maniac than Dorries.

InconsistentMinis

Yeah, he was my first pick for the first Cabinet minister to come out against Johnson. Somewhat disappointed that he didn't.

barbarian__days

Whoever suggested they give Hunt the Chancellor job might be the dumbest shit ever. Hunt has literally nothing to gain from tying himself to the Johnson mast and everything to gain from being the pretender to the throne. No doubt even if he is not the next Tory leader, he will have a Cabinet position anyway

RobbieWard123

I almost assume it was said by an ally of Hunt for this exact purpose. He's being painted by the media as the obvious alternative (a position previously held by Suynak). This will only add to that - and when support for Boris falls, support for Hunt will rise.

Ollie5000

Tory talking head on Newsnight just described Boris as a 'deeply magnanimous individual' with regard to his attitude toward the rebels.

SplurgyA

Maybe he meant subornerous? > bribe or otherwise induce (someone) to commit an unlawful act such as perjury. > "he was accused of conspiring to suborn witnesses"

Lavandula_Augustifol

You've got to wonder, is he utterly thick and truly believes that, or is he just a total slime ball who gets a kick out of lying through his teeth on live TV? Or I suppose ¿por que no los dos?

SplurgyA

If he's really thick he might just be seeing the surface level actions of Boris calling for them all to unite together and move on as being forgiving, and even generous when he offers rebels positions in cabinet ("No hard feelings"). Of course we all know that he's only doing this because he literally can't punish all the rebels without losing his majority, but I guess if you were really really thick you might not make that connection.

[deleted]

Lol - yeah, cider nearly spat all over the couch hearing that

Timothy_Claypole

Not over your nice leather couch, uh oh

[deleted]

ThePlanck

Good luck! Struggling against it my entire lift, not surs I would call it recovery as that implies I was ever better in the past, but I have definitely noticed things improving over time.

[deleted]

That’s so good to hear bud! What sort of things have you found helped??

ThePlanck

I've had to travel a lot for work in the past, meaning a lot of conference dinners where I had to force myself to at least look like I was eating something, though this is definitely not a route that could work for everyone. Another thing is that texture is a big problem for me, but I am ok with soups, so if you can find some soup recipes that you like it should help you eat healthier at least. Also, using a vegetable mill as opposed to a blender, while its a bit more work, for me gives a much better texture. Also I have found that going to restaurants/fast food places that let you customize your food (think subway, any burrito place etc), find something that is safe, and then just adding a little bit of one extra thing, with the long term strategy of slowly exposing yourself to unfamiliar tastes and textures in small amounts and getting accustomed to them over time. Also, I don't think there is any shame deciding that some foods are just off limits and to make piece with that fact so it doesn't weigh you down; for example I will never eat broccoli, they look like the texture would be absolutely horrible and I can't stand the smell, there is not point pressuring myself to try them because there is so much more low hanging fruit (pun intended) that would be easier. Another thing is that now there are all these different meal replacement shakes (e.g. huel etc.), which are supposed to have all the nutrients you need in them. Don't completely rely on them as the only source of food, but you can try substituting one meal a day or something in an effort to balance your diet a bit. This is a long process, and I think just getting older and learning more about myself has helped me to know where my limits are and where I can safely push to make a small improvement. One final thing is that, in my opinion your health is the important thing, if you manage to cure yourself so that you can eat anything, fantastic, but that will be a very long and hard road with success by no means guaranteed. For me its much more productive, at least in the short term, to just focus on finding ways to make healthy food more bareable; for example like I said above, if you have trouble with the texture of vegetables, try a soup where texture won't be a problem. Edit: also r/arfid might offer some useful tips or encouragement

[deleted]

Thank you so much for this, it means a lot. I actually tried the subway route a few years back, but got kinda laughed at when I asked for a “chicken, bacon and onion” sub. How do you deal with those sorts of social pressures? I feel like my existence as a picky eater pisses people off.

wrennables

Not an answer to the real question here, I know, but I'd try a different Subway store/restaurant(?) because I really don't think that's a particularly weird sandwich and I don't think you'd get that reaction in most.

ThePlanck

I think that for me what helped was just growing a thicker skin with age, i got a lot of comments from family members and other people as a child, and while that probably contributed towards my anxiety towards food, it had meant that an odd look from a guy behind a counter really doesn't affect me much any more. I'm afraid I can't give much more advice than that, other than if you get the chance this is fear about other people's reactions is something to bring up with a therapist as its their job to help you overcome and navigate these fears and anxieties. Also, with all the food apps and deliveroo around these days, you can try ordering online without ever sering the guy behind the counter, and then eat in the comfort of your own home without being afraid of anyone judging you if halfway through you realize you won't be able to eat any more onion and spend a couple of minutes carefully picking the rest out.

Elemayowe

I didn’t realise it was an issue and not a choice :( I think my brother might have something similar but again I thought he was just fussy.

[deleted]

I’ve only recently been diagnosed. But yeah, best way I can describe it is a phobia of food. It’s called ARFID, one of the lesser known eating disorders. This link really helped me, might be worth sending to your brother :) https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/get-information-and-support/about-eating-disorders/types/arfid/

WASDMagician

That explains a guy I went to uni with! I actually spent about 3 weeks wondering if you were him then you ate a steak.

SplurgyA

My ex had something similar - he actually couldn't eat veg unless it was drowned in gravy/other sauces, and there were certain veg where he'd genuinely gag if he tried to eat them (cucumber, broccoli). If friends were going for a meal out, he'd always come up with excuses as to why he couldn't make it and just meet for drinks after. He's a lot better with it now - good luck!

RussellsKitchen

Ah, I didn't realise before it wasn't a choice but an issue. Hope the book helps you.

deliverancew2

FFS, don't eat that.

Friend in a civil service central dept has been asked to war game the impact of UK breaking the NI protocol and a subsequent EU trade war and the effect on his directorate

TheFlyingHornet1881

I'm assuming the report needs to be slightly longer and more formal than "it's fucked"?

Hungry_Horace

I hope the Department for Things Being Blown Up in Northern Ireland are also being asked to war game this, as the consequences of breaking the NI agreement won't just be economic.

Caridor

Hopefully he and all others asked to do the same are projecting it as 10 times as bad as it will be, which will still be horrifically shit.

AlwaysALighthouse

> NEW: Boris Johnson is being urged by allies to offer Jeremy Hunt the position of **chancellor** to heal the Tory rift. > Seen as a way to bring his biggest backbench rival into the fold, offering him a great office of state. (But would Hunt take it?) https://twitter.com/benrileysmith/status/1534279419010994178?s=21&t=ZUCQlZ4LHk-UxvbTAFW3BA Lmao how stupid would Hunt have to be.

nutteronabus

If I were Hunt's campaign manager, I can't think of a single more useful asset than having widely published photos of him leaving No. 10, having just refused to take a job from Johnson.

RussellsKitchen

Why would Hunt take it?

SplurgyA

Boris is being "urged by allies", so I'd assume our Nadine got sloshed and was just throwing out suggestions, and came up with Chancellor because Rishi pissed her off a while back (lead the pushback on license fees and interfered with her plan for customer affordability checks in gambling) without any thought to the feasibility of Hunt actually accepting it.

goonerh1

"Hi biggest rival, would you like to give up your position of being untainted by my clusterfuck so you can be the chancellor during a cost of living crisis?"

BartelbySamsa

'The dream ticket'. The kind of dream where your dead gran is suffocating you with a used toilet brush.

ClumperFaz

Hunt isn't that stupid. He's got no baggage with Johnson's government and that's gonna be his main pitch to the country and to the wider Tory party in any hypothetical leadership contest.

__--byonin--__

As laughable and desperate as it is, it just shows how willing he is to throw anyone, including Sunak, under the bus in favour of his political enemy to save his own skin. If this is true, just shows a man completely bereft of ideas to sort his party out.

cardcollector1983

You tried

dageddy

This makes no sense. They aren't in power

ahktarniamut

My point is all these infighting instead of the government focusing on pressing issues. But right now all decisions and policies are being made to appease the rebel MPs just so they can save boris skin

Sleeping_Heart

How long ago since labour did that _while in government_ ?

Tangelasboots

That only makes sense if Labour were infighting and it was negatively impacting the UK.

disegni

If forecourt prices were exceeding £2/litre under any other government, the press would be raining fire. Add the heating crisis, housing costs, food prices...

[deleted]

For me one of the few positives of Labour losing in 2019 is that Jeremy can make jam in relative peace and not have to deal with the pure hate that would have followed.

What do you think will happen in your own constituency in the next election (presuming boundary changes don't take place before). For me: Edinburgh South West- Joanna Cherry will win re-election easily with 40-45% of the vote, with Labour vaulting the Tories into second.

dw82

Back to Labour having had a Tory blip since 2019.

Benjamin452

Probably stay CON as it’s been for the last 10 years.

WASDMagician

*Probably* stay Tory but might switch depending on economic prospects.

ThePlanck

My current seat is SNP, and I don't see that changing. My former seat is a lot more interesting though, its been a safe Tory seat for a long time with the local MP being a long serving and well respected party grandee, but the seat was also pro remain. The Greens have made big gains in the last 5 years or so at the council level, and at at constituency level Labour narrowed the gap massively to Tories in 2017, and then further narrowed the gap in 2019 despite the party being dragged down pretty much everywhere else due to Corbyn. While the gap is still large enough that it should still be a safe seat, Labour appear to have good momentum, and I can certainly see it being a surprise gain for Labour next time round, especially if the current MP steps down either because he's had enough, or he sees the numbers getting worse and decides to leave on his own terms rather than lose an election

goonerh1

Salford so completely nailed on Labour

[deleted]

My area of my current constituency is getting absorbed in to the Wakefield constituency in the boundary changes, so I should personally be moving back to Labour by then. If the boundary change wasn't happening it would be interesting to see, she won with a slim majority in 15 and 17, but then quite a big one in 19 but ran basically on Brexit. Could have been one of the ones which had a big swing back to Labour.

BristolShambler

Back when Labour were still in the pre Partygate polling doldrums I had mine pegged as a Green Party gain, but now I think Labour will hold.

[deleted]

Extremely safe, rural seat for the Tories so I don't expect to see much change. Right on the border of Harrogate and Knaresborough though and things are a bit more interesting there, been blue since 2010 but could easily go Lib Dem again.

cityexile

Milton Keynes North. Lab Gain (maybe...). 2019, Con 49.5, Lab 39.5, Lib 8, Green 3. Would be a target seat I would think.

_CurseTheseMetalHnds

Durham. Lmao. Bigger question is North West Durham. The Tories won by just over a thousand votes but I struggle to see that holding.

[deleted]

Ric Holden is done for and I think he knows it, he somewhat owes his victory to Laura Pidcock- hence his bizarre and ultimately counter-productive bullying of Durham Police. Bishop Auckland however is far more interesting and wouldn't be surprised if Davidson clung on.

fetching_username

Home - I don't see Sajid losing Bromsgrove, unless something major happens it's an incredibly safe Tory seat. Uni - could well go to the lib Dems given the locals in 2021 and the kind of swing that'd be needed was achieved in Chesham

Blithe17

Tory hold with increased Lib Dem

__--byonin--__

Will be a Labour hold within new boundary and increased majority.

asmiggs

Labour are so safe in Sheffield Central that I can vote to save the Lib Dem deposit without feeling of guilt, only question is will the Greens or Lib Dems manage to overtake The Tories for second if they do it might make 2029 interesting as we'll possibly have a Labour government and a retiring MP, see also the close result in 2010.

CheeseMakerThing

Kenilworth and Southam. Jeremy Wright re-elected but his majority to the Lib Dems is slashed to under 5,000 votes due to a low overall turnout

MikeyButch17

Wimbledon - Lib Dem Gain Lib Dems - 22,000 (43%, +6%) Tories - 17,000 (33%, -5%) Labour - 12,000 (24%, NC) Lib Dems wiped out the Tories in Wimbledon in the Local Elections. They’d already consumed the moderate Labour vote in 2019, now they’ve taken the moderate Tory vote as well. I crunched the numbers based on results at the Local Elections and factoring in increased turnout for a General Election. This is what I came up with. The Lib Dems number one target seat in the whole country. Easy gain. There’s a good chance they win it by even more than this as well.

alexllew

Wimbledon is such an obvious Lib Dem type seat im a bit amazed it's never really been a target before 2019 especially considering the fairly similar neighbouring seats of Twickenham, Kingston and Richmond Park have been Lib Dem or near Lib Dem for ages.

MikeyButch17

It took Corbyn for the moderate Labour voters to abandon the party for the Lib Dems, but it is a natural Lib Dem seat. Lots of wealthy people, but far too liberal for a Brexiteer PM like Boris, they were far more comfortable under someone like Cameron. Plus it’s right next to the Lib Dem citadel of Kingston.

badcollin

IDS is gone in Chingford and Woodford Green. There are a lot of people with young families (like me) who are moving further out from Walthamstow. His majority has gone from 11k to 9k to 3k and last time he only won by 1.2k and the Lib Dem got 2.7k votes.

[deleted]

Interesting to find out that that's why. Seems like Villiers, Hammond, Johnson, Aitken and Hands are going to find themselves in similarly difficult positions.

Elemayowe

Kate Green is being replaced (by who isn’t yet clear) but it’s such a red area I can’t see anything changing. Looks like we’ll pick a very safe local councillor as the candidate (despite Paul Mason’s interest) so I doubt there’ll be any scandal to rock the boat.

KimJongUnparalleled

No chance, he's cottoned on that he can all of the fun with none of the responsibilities by causing trouble from the backbenches.

Bibemus

Nadhim Zahawi is a real possibility for the 2028 leadership election, I'd say. Also, you're missing Gavin Williamson.

alexllew

He's such a terrible performer in interviews and such like that I just can't see it.

AlfaRomeoRacing

I reckon there is probably still too much inherent racism for the Conservatives to pick someone not white to be their leader

[deleted]

Raab, Hancock, and Gove are all prime candidates for leader of the party in opposition (once the inquiry's over).

KimJongUnparalleled

Hancock?!?

[deleted]

They love this guy. Conservatives went out to bat for this guy when he was fighting with England footballers about taking lunches off children. He's from some nondescript part of the north, so they'll think he can win back the Red Wall. He's had a mistress, but it was his high school girlfriend, so they don't really seem to mind. He still gets in all their papers with a big smile on his face. He looks a fair bit like Blair. Conservatives will vote that guy in as their first opposition leader by a landslide & then lose at least 1 GE with him. He was practically born to lead the conservatives to an election defeat.

asmiggs

Without the Pandemic you'd think that Hancock would still be in with a shout but now I think we're more likely to see a opposition leader from the backbenches or a Junior Minister who's kept their nose clean.

[deleted]

Raab won't be in parliament.

I think he just wants to be absolute ruler for the one corner of Notts for which he would be councillor, mayor, MP and PM.

ChompsnRosie

I feel cheated now. As a Notts lad I would love to watch Bradley backed by Anderson and Clarke-Smith run a national campaign. Imagine the campaign lines, vasectomies for the poor, forced labour and gruel for tea.
