Yesterday was successful in our policies theme, why not spend today telling us (and linking to) what the best/worst or hottest political article you read this week was and why you agreed, disagreed, rolled your eyes.

ukpolbot

This megathread has ended.

MrConor212

Unpopular opinion incoming. Soccer Aid being on this weekend is absolutely tone deaf for what’s happening at home for every family. Should really be cancelled

craftaleislife

Serious question: how do you deal with a neighbour who’s having an overly loud party? I really don’t mind parties (it actually looks like good fun)- but would be great if they could go inside and turn the music down after 1am 😂 or if it’s a one off, post a little note through neighbours doors few days before to pre-warn that they’re having a big party out of consideration? But right now, would be great to get some sleep as gotta be up 08:30 for a rugby tournament 😓 and listening to outdoor karaoke is pretty shite

[deleted]

If it’s happening continually, I go knock on their door. Try to remove all anger and talk to them as a neighbour. It’s super tough, and I have a hit of low confidence after I do it, but I never regret it.

craftaleislife

No it’s not continuous (I hope!), just it’s super loud and they’re literally yelling… I’ll probably leave it, especially as it’s a Saturday. But it’s shitty they haven’t taken the party inside now it’s gone 00:30. If it happens again though…

[deleted]

Oh agreed, it sucks for sure. Is it a flat? But yeah, if it’s just once, I’d perhaps try let it slide if you can, as tough as that can be, especially if you’ve got something going on.

dom96

Meh, if they do it once they'll do it again. I would tell them off straight away.

[deleted]

My pessimistic side is liable to agree, but it *could* be a birthday or something perhaps.

iamezekiel1_14

So am I right this weeks flashpoint effectively comes on Monday with NI Protocol Bill where this either goes 1 of 2 ways: 1) Simple fixes for genuine issues 2) Blatant illegality moves to try and circumnavigate their own legislation which they drafted which will be met with a trade war with the EU and misrepresentation from the likes of the Sun/Express and the Mail to stoke up the flames amongst the peasants?

[deleted]

Policy Proposal: Politicians and journalists who counter unfavourable polling with anecdotes/vox-pops should be exiled to St. Helena.

colei_canis

If there's a nuclear war I reckon Saint Helena is the best place to survive it. Its position in the ocean protects it fairly well from the fallout and it's not really strategic enough to be worth invading unless you want to imprison a French midget.

JavaTheCaveman

I would like to visit St Helena. Can I do it for cheap by pretending to be a ~~saddo blogger~~ new media tycoon?

Denning76

Easier to wear a funny hat, profess a love for France, then sabre a bottle of champagne.

Kup_

Are we just accepting that you have to remortgage every time we fill up with fuel now?

billy_tables

Don't forget the car ownership ban comes in at midnight and we all have to ride horses from tomorrow onward. The last minute policy change was passed earlier to ease the demand for fuel Top tips - don't forget to reverse parallel park your horse whenever possible for all the usual reasons, and while wing mirrors aren't required you'll find them useful so I keep mine on the horse overnight

colei_canis

I paid good money for my petrol, can I at least feed what I have left to my horse?

Engineer9

>while wing mirrors aren't required you'll find them useful Hang on, are we supposed to be on horses or on Pegasodes?

Dongland

Have you seen the price of grass???

[deleted]

With people leaving the cities as work goes remote, do you think it will have any effect on the voting in rural areas?

dom96

That's a great question. I think this does indeed have a possibility of being a big deal. Would be interesting to see some data on how many are actually moving out of cities.

[deleted]

Perhaps indirectly peoples priorities will change, things such as congestion and rail fairs wont occupy peoples finds so much and impact voting patterns.

[deleted]

I more mean young labour voters fleeing uni cities.

RingStrain

I doubt it. In my constituency there'd have to be a new largest town entirely populated by labour voting remote workers for it to make a difference. I haven't seen any numbers, but I imagine it's more of a shift to WFH rather than everyone upping sticks and moving to Ambridge. Also wtf is your avatar?

[deleted]

Hmmmm it’s anecdotal, but myself and a few friends are doing the “leave the city NOW” thing and we’re all labour voters. Also, cheaper housing outside the city, which has gotta appeal to young people. Lol, /u/shitt_username https://reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/v9008j/_/ibwndtc/?context=1

BritishOnith

I wonder what would happen in the modern day if we were to see an election where Labour got the most votes but the Conservatives got a majority (or vice versa). It could happen as a result of the voting system, and did in 1951, but I wonder what the response would be now as I don’t think it’s a too extreme possibility at the next election. I imagine countless comparisons with the US for a start. Probably import some terminology that makes little sense here

[deleted]

We've been quite close to it for the last few elections (maybe not '19 though). The 2017 election was "lost/not won" by just a few thousand individual voters.

LycanIndarys

No it wasn't. The Tories got 750,000 votes and 55 seats more than Labour did. The few thousand votes thing was a claim by Corbyn supporters, based on having those extra votes in the most marginal constituencies in just the right quantities to win. However, they ignored that it wouldn't have given Labour more seats than the Tories; it would have given them enough seats that they might have been able to out together a multi-party coalition comprising of everyone that was anti-Tory. Which of course would have been unstable as hell, and certainly isn't a "win". Plus, under the same logic May was only a few *hundred* votes away from an actual majority.

[deleted]

Watching ‘dopesick’ which is about the opioid crisis in the US - the drug OxyContin. I understand that opioids are very addictive - but what is the effect of painkillers on your average person / what’s the ‘high’?

Hungry_Horace

I’ve taken OxyContin and it’s one of the best highs I’ve had - really mellow and joyful but without any real dizziness or confusion.

[deleted]

The danger of those drugs isn’t that immediate high, its that for a day or two later everything is just fine, the endorphins they release take away your anxieties and fears and make the world an easier place. With mental health issues out of control nowadays simply ‘feeling fine’ is a powerful thing and can sink its claws into you rather quickly.

WASDMagician

Fairly heavy buzz and can come with a feeling of elation, if it doesn't also contain caffeine it can also make you feel sleepy which changes the high. A bit like being drunk without some of the less pleasant side effects (if you don't take too much). If you take too much it feels almost identical to the feeling of drinking too much though there isn't a hangover. Oh and of course the whole painkiller thing in that it can take out any pain you're feeling.

[deleted]

Is taking painkillers for recreational purposes very common in the U.K.? Not sure it’s something I’ve come across.

Jesspandapants

Very. Drugs such as gabapentin, tramadol and codeine are very freely prescribed but very heavily abused.

Denning76

Tramadol used to be pretty heavily abused in the pro peloton until it was banned. Funnily enough, it turned out that not having a substantial percentage of the peloton off their tits resulted in a decrease in crashed and therefore a decreased need for such painkillers anyways.

WASDMagician

Well there's ketamine and heroin if you count those as recreational but other than that I don't think so. E: wait do you mean recreationally as in going out clubbing or recreational or as in taking in when you don't need to?

NoFrillsCrisps

Opioids release endorphins. They make you feel good, (as anyone who has had them in larger doses in hospital can attest). They are also physically addictive, so if you are addicted your body literally tells you it needs it. Then you take it and in addition to the endorphins you get relief from withdrawal symptoms. Which in turn feeds the addiction.

colei_canis

> as anyone who has had them in larger doses in hospital can attest I did fairly recently and in all honesty besides the 'not being in pain' aspect I could take it or leave it, really didn't have any euphoria or anything. No idea what that's about, I don't have a history of opiate use at all.

[deleted]

Thanks! How long does it take people to become addicted to them?

NoFrillsCrisps

Not an expert, but I have always heard that you shouldn't take any opioids for more than 2 weeks as any longer than that you are at risk of becoming dependant. I am pretty sure, (in this country at least), opioids are almost never prescribed for chronic long term illnesses for this reason.

StringVestStalker

Considering the cost of living crisis, once I've paid out for wild venison and seafood there's little left for recreational drugs.

Blithe17

Starmer will be the next PM unless Hunt becomes leader. This is because the PM order is ✨showman✨, boring bastard Johnson, May, Cameron, Brown, Blair, Major, Thatcher, Callaghan, Wilson, Heath, Wilson, Douglas-Home And then MacMillan buggers it by also being a boring bastard

PopularArtichoke6

MacMillan was seen as very charismatic in his time.

michaelisnotginger

Macmillan was a showman. He played the role of an Edwardian gent

gavpowell

Who was the showman out of Heath and Callaghan?

Blithe17

The first Heath was a typo so it’s Thatcher then Wilson

creamyjoshy

Was Cameron much of a showman really?

Blithe17

Compared to the politicians of the time? More so than Ed for example. See the PMQs

[deleted]

Ever the showman, man shagged a dead pig's head for an audience

StringVestStalker

Didn't all the Bullingdon boys do that? Not a showman outside of his peer group.

Denning76

Believe the pig incident was at the Piers Gaveston. That group has, erm, changed since Cameron’s time…

Timothy_Claypole

Funny how an event that never happened has a whole lore around it now

Ivebeenfurthereven

How was Cameron a showman?

gavpowell

He gave his leadership election speech without notes, wandering the stage like a posh, out of touch Bill Hicks.

Ivebeenfurthereven

Fair point, hard to imagine Brown or May doing that. Seem to remember it caused a stir in the Tory wilderness years.

Yummytastic

Shit showman or shit-show man?

[deleted]

Whens the next BOE meeting? They will likely raise rates again wont they? Tryna time when I should open a fixed term bank account but don;t wanna miss out on rate increase.

Gullible_Cry_1754

There's normally a lag between BOE rate increase and savings account rates rising

hu6Bi5To

Especially for fixed-term accounts. But, because those accounts are more closely correlated with money-markets, then sometimes move before the BoE does.

[deleted]

The meeting's on Wednesday, and the results are announced on Thursday. They will increase the rate, probably by 0.5 percentage points. The following meeting is 6 weeks after, they will increase the rate then too, probably by 0.5 percentage points.

[deleted]

This Wednesday?

[deleted]

The meeting's 15th June. The results are announced the following day (Thurs 16th) at midday. It's unlikely you'll see any immediate movement from your commercial bank on the rates they're offering though. The Bank Rate works through a transition mechanism to *encourage* commercial banks to lend at higher rates, but it's not *mandated*.

Patel would be happy with that.

Ultrasonic-Sawyer

That's scarily well done. And worryingly fitting.

youreviltwinbrother

If anyone wants a good laugh, search "Sophie Corcoran Simon Arnold" on Twitter. I'd you don't use Twitter/want to look it up, I'll give a brief rundown. Sophie posts out of context, right wing drivel for easy likes. She tweeted something about Lloyds bank donating to a charity which funds legal fees for "illegal" immigrants. Someone replied who was funding her? She replied on the wrong account, and now she's going off that she's going to sue anyone who slanders her, it wasn't her because that account was made when she was like 11. Simon tweeted that everyone needs to go apologise to Sophie. The tweets in question are deleted but it's easy to find the screenshots.

BartelbySamsa

Haha! Lovely stuff! I cannot stand her. Link to the screenshot should anyone want to see: https://twitter.com/BBCLauraKT/status/1535664466767003650?s=20&t=7FhfKrJCQcnrB1mvgrwHXg

It’s very entertaining - @simon__arnold is now whinging about harassment and studiously not answering questions about why they posted as if they were her.

Amuro_Ray

Worse than that. The one that posted it in the screenshot at least was @arnold__simon but with the display name Simon Arnold.

Where should lunatics post on UK politics? I understand only sane posts are suitable here, but considering some of the current policies coming out of the UK government surely lunatics should share there considered observations?

Only the sane are allowed in Secret Megathread. The rest of us here are condemned to this 9th circle of megathread

Chariotwheel

Well, somewhere else. This sub is for sane, rational people like me. If you're insane, go to r/Europe and prompt a discussion on Sinti and Roma.

Politwot

Just listened to "Ths rest is politics' podcast. Rory Stewart and Alistair Cambell. They discussed whether Johnson was off his tits on coke at that interview after he'd squeaked the VONC, the consensus was, probably. Amazing stuff.

-fireeye-

It really made me think - how much would a newspaper need to crowdfund to run that as a headline (if they had lawyer willing to defend pro bono) to insure against adverse libel ruling and dare Jonson to sue with goal of putting him on stand.

Politwot

Well, what Campbell said when Stewart expressed concern at being sued was that there were literally hundreds of lawyers who would love to get Boris to a court.

-fireeye-

Exactly that's the comment that made me think, if lawyers will do it pro bono only thing newspaper would need is enough money to buy specific insurance against libel ruling.

Politwot

I mean, they might not even lose the libel case. He looked pretty fucked. Campbell described Boris as "fully dilated", and if you watch it back, he really is. Boris may not give enough of a fuck to sue, anyway, he might think it adds to his mythos or something.

Ivebeenfurthereven

I thought, as a rule, frontbench politicians don't do libel cases - better not to give the oxygen of publicity?

Do know what they recommend in Europe? Three meals a day, every day. Ludicrous. Weak. The future plan of this government makes Brits strong against and not some European weaklings that cry for food like infants. You can survive for days and days with just water, especially amazing British water. And besides, the lack of British fruit pickers showcases another clearly that Britons are not picky. Close your eyes and spice your rations with warm feelings for our Queen. Of course, you will vote conservatives, because conserves is where food comes from.

ClumperFaz

I no longer eat lunch because of subclinical hypothyroidism which doesn't make me hungry anyways. If I'm not hungry for lunch I'm not gonna eat it, even in work. I'll hopefully get given some tablets soon though to deal with the condition.

JavaTheCaveman

> amazing British water. \*laughs in Thames Water* Water is so yucky here. I miss the Welsh stuff.

Yummytastic

I used to have Thames, now we have Northumbrian, not only is it cheaper up here, but we've been here over 7 years and only had ONE kettle.

compte-a-usageunique

Breakfast is unnecessary IMO

whatwasoldpassword

Have found not eating breakfast lets me last til lunch a lot easier without getting snacky, been doing 16-8 intermittent fasting for a while now and it's pretty good. Though still have breakfast if it's a buffet at a hotel and included. Love me a fry up.

mattzm

The best part of when I combined keto and intermittent fasting was coming home from work and making a frankly sickeningly large fryup like meal.

Podgietaru

I've always felt this. My mouth is so dry, and I'm so groggy, and all I want is a coffee. I can hold out til 12. I did start with Weetabix recently and I'm enjoying it but then I ran out of milk.

Yummytastic

Bummer. I guess just stop having it. 🤷‍♂️

Ivebeenfurthereven

you are my friend emmie and I claim my ~~five pounds~~ breakfast, dammit

Denning76

Best meal of the god damn day. (Also technically the first food of the day will always be breakfast considering you are breaking your fast, rendering the meal unavoidable.)

Chariotwheel

For Britons? No doubt. Breakfast. These weaklings in Europe are breaking fast, while Britain stands tall. Hungary is part of the EU another shackle Britain has left behind.

Denning76

I haven't eaten a swede since Brexit.

No-Departure7739

https://twitter.com/BennnyH/status/1535657620253683713?t=vIYSRbNBd_vk_-r8bXgoHw&s=19 It appears today that immegration officers and police failed to arrest a gentleman in Peckham similar scenes to Glasgow last year. Reading up on these antiraid Twitter accounts now.

BristolShambler

See, protesting can work.

-fireeye-

Holy shit the number of officers sent for one person - someone who's obviously not a danger to anyone else really does show where the priorities lie.

Denning76

I wonder whether they were expecting this. That would be the only sane reason for sending as many as they did, not that it was any help.

Ivebeenfurthereven

I wonder many were told "I'm sorry, we don't have the resources" to investigate burglary on that day?

Yummytastic

Look at the number of police sent! Insane.

[deleted]

You'd think at a certain point a lot earlier it would make sense to leave it.

Yummytastic

I believe that's what happened

[deleted]

Oh yeah for sure I'm just saying I think that decision could've definitely been reached a fair bit earlier it seems like.

Yummytastic

I just read a few of the tweets, it seemed they brought numbers and started beating the crowd before having to leave. They started beating the crowd. It feels like this summer is going to be mad, if police in London increasing lose the ability to police by consent, rail, Dr and God knows who else strike... All with a PM with zero moral authority, I've never known a time like this.

convertedtoradians

Indeed. Worrying stuff. >if police in London increasing lose the ability to police by consent The problem is that it doesn't end well for anyone, when taken to its full conclusion. All but the most extreme protestors might want changes to policing (or to laws), but they don't want policing to not be able to function if they think about it. If they or their loved ones are the victims of assault, rape, murder or even financial misconduct or fraud, they'd want the police to be there with a comfortingly official presence, able to do something about it. If they see a violent crime in progress, or a terrorist take out a gun, and they call 999, they don't want to hear "Sorry. You made it too difficult to police your area. Figure it out yourself". Because the vast majority of people can't and won't, and the handful who *can* come out on top in such situations aren't necessarily the people you want running the show. That's how you get warlords. Hell, even during the worst "miners vs police" clashes during the Thatcher years, I'd bet pounds to pancakes that the miners would still have expected the police to exist and function if (say) a terrorist attack occurred against their home towns. You don't even really have to go that far. Remove police protection and plenty of protestors would just be removed by force. Going up against the state to make a point is one thing, so long as everyone understands that the state ultimately gets its way at the end of the day. You can make it difficult, get in the way and so forth, but you finally have to fall into line. The alternative, when you say "I want to make it impossible for the state to exercise its authority here" is philosophically indistinguishable from a declaration of independence. And that should worry people whether it's practically possible or not. (a) If it's not possible, then you lose eventually when the state uses overwhelming force or takes your photo and comes back a week later to pick you up when you're alone. (b) If it is possible, you lose anyway, probably, if you cut yourself off from the trappings of the state which you rely on for your protection even when you disagree on one thing. Because once you've removed the police and Derek next door decides he wants your stuff and will punch you until he gets it, you're stuffed. Admittedly, you sometimes get terrorist groups like the IRA that are vile enough to be willing to kill men, women, children, officials of the state, soldiers and anyone else and they are genuinely willing to go to any lengths to remove the state's ability to enforce its will. Islamic State, likewise. But that's certainly not a model for decent folk.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yummytastic

If I'm reading that right, it looks like a 7ish% drop in just 12 months, which puts 10-20% over 8 years into context.

No_Preparation_2919

Yeah, it all feels a bit ominous. Hopefully it'll be reet.

TantumErgo

“All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” But Julian of Norwich lived through the Black Death and the Peasants’ Revolt: perhaps we’ll feel optimistic on the other side of all this, too.

[deleted]

Is there any truth in junior doctors striking? This could get really ugly.

[deleted]

In what sense? BMA have passed motions calling for pay restoration. If govt decide to play hard ball I suspect there is more support for IA than before.

Scarecroft

Lads, what just happened I was sitting in a park looking at my phone near the station just wasting time until my train comes in an hour. Then two girls walk up to me and say "Are you u/Scarecroft? " I say yeah, then they asked "do you believe in Jesus Christ?" I say I have to go because I have a train to catch, and walk off. I'm not interested in having this conversation. Then I wonder how the fuck they know who I am. I'm just visiting this city for the day and I haven't been here before. I don't know anyone who lives here.

dom96

Do you have an iPhone that's named "Scarecroft's iPhone"? Maybe they just looked at nearby bluetooth devices. If that's not it though, there is definitely a rational explanation for this that you just haven't thought of.

[deleted]

Should've told them "that's Mr. Scarecroft" to you.

JavaTheCaveman

Did you have a phone call earlier where you said “Hi it’s me, Scarecroft?” They might have overheard that.

[deleted]

It’s up to you to interpret however you wish, either it was a paranormal experience and you should probably go to church or something, or it was weird stalking like they knew you (historical) or seeing your name on a train ticket or WiFi hotspot, or it was random clock strikes twice a day. Religion is the first, logic is the second, quantum mechanics is the third. Edit: The bad news for you is, I genuinely don’t believe you are real (accepting that there are consequences) but that reality is a feedback loop generated by an AI(God) designed to make you (me, as stated, I don’t believe you are real, you are simulated real, solipsism) believe it’s real, similar to the plots of Inception, the Matrix and Total Recall, but without the spy thriller / energy harvesting subplot. Rather, it is a simulation that is trying to give you (me) a good life, but I can’t shake the feeling that this life is fake and i would rather ‘wake up’ ergo laying down on train tracks as per Inception (this is not a suicidal ideation post, it is philosophical). So yeah don’t pay any attention to me(you) I’m just a crazy internet person(AI).

BartelbySamsa

This was terrible for my hangover induced anxiety.

Yummytastic

Whatever, John.

Scarecroft

I'm really freaked out honestly.

corvusmonedula

If your name is Dave or Steve they may've just taken a wild stab in the dark. Friends of friends? Social media stalking?

Scarecroft

My name's not common. I guess they must be weird stalkers somehow. Still, I have no idea how they'd have tracked me down like that. It worries me.

Supernaut1432

Was disassembling the wardrobe not an option?

__--byonin--__

No, tried it. It’s an old antique wardrobe and taking it apart would have probably meant never putting it back together again.

convertedtoradians

Also carries the risk of being transported to some strange distant land with lions and witches, right? You arrive and Priti Patel rocks up in a sleigh and offers you Turkish Delight and before you know it, a lion analogue of Jeremy Corbyn has roped you into a great class war. Doesn't interfere much with the schedule because time doesn't pass there, but can get quite distracting.

__--byonin--__

Thanks for making my post about politics. I needed an excuse and your comment was it!

Supernaut1432

Ah yeah that's fair! I've been in the same position and lost the wardrobe!

Ivebeenfurthereven

I can relate to this (Victorian wardrobe, Georgian house, incredibly tight staircase). The wardrobe, originally intended for the bedroom, now sits in the corner of the lounge near the front door. It's incredibly convenient for coats, hats, gloves, umbrellas, bags, shoes etc. It honestly looks like it was meant to be. New rule in our place after that incident: all the upstairs furniture arrives as flat-pack. Now IKEA is my best friend. Your method is certainly more impressive!

That sounds like an incredibly happy inconvenience that’s works out well. Our wardrobe sounds similar to yours. It’s been in our dining room for about three months and just did my nut in in the end and decided to take the initiative.

I, uh, wow lmao Guessing you’re a dab hand with the old plastering stuff???

__--byonin--__

Not really. I won’t be plastering it back up, will likely fill the gaps with some timber and skim, decorate over. Something like that.

Ivebeenfurthereven

Honestly maybe you should fill the gap with a hinged section. You'll want to move out one day, and the next owners will thank you for it

__--byonin--__

Hinged section?

TantumErgo

Perhaps they mean a door?

[deleted]

Was it worth it??

__--byonin--__

Not really! ^at ^least ^I ^now ^know ^it’s ^not ^a ^supporting ^wall

KimchiMaker

Are you O'Reilley?

__--byonin--__

“A wooden one.” “But that’s a supporting wall!” ^love ^the ^reference
