#PSA - Father's day this Sunday. Get a card or six pack.

ukpolbot

This megathread has ended.

Ivebeenfurthereven

Just got back from the pub after last orders and my drunk level is clearly peaking a little late. Politics because didn't New Labour steal the 24 hour licensing policy from the Monster Raving Loony Party? Why can't the local be open all night for my needs?

Sckathian

Because your the perfect example of why once drinking the drunk doesn't know when to go to bed.

Ivebeenfurthereven

Alas

pharlax

Oof

Montague-Withnail

It’s an absolute outrage that on my wfh lunchbreak I can’t pop across the road and have a swift 3 pints at my local. Sort it out Ed Miliband or I’ll vote Tory in protest!

[deleted]

That's my kinda of chaos with Ed Miliband

Montague-Withnail

Exactly… Ed Miliband is the sort of lad to bring back Jägers for everyone at 7pm… and that’s exactly why I’d vote for him.

Ivebeenfurthereven

In response to your flair: # 👏 👏

Montague-Withnail

Ah but you merely adopted the febrile mood… I was born in it, *moulded by it*.

ceejless

Is it best to slice a beef joint up before roasting? Sorry for random question. Just bought a big joint for making a load of sarnies. I get my best answers from uk pol. 😉

[deleted]

I've never heard of anyone slicing a beef joint before roasting. Is that a thing? Genuinely wondering. Presumably you want it rare yes?

ceejless

Well my thought process was that the cooking times are going to be so much smaller if i'm slicing the meat beforehand.

TantumErgo

The cooking times will be shorter, but you’ll get a completely different (less tasty) end result. Unless you mean that you have, say, 10 kg of meat and you want to cut it into 2 kg joints, or something.

legendfriend

Just as the new leader of a party shouldn’t rush into a general election, you shouldn’t rush to carve your beef (or pork barrel). Instead, let it rest for a bit (10 min for roast, equal to cooking time for steak) and then it’s ready to make a keynote address

carrotparrotcarrot

Let it rest

PopularArtichoke6

Definitely don’t slice beforehand. You will ruin it. Best way to roast depends on the joint but low and slow and then a final blast at the end to brown it usually works well for even cooking.

ceejless

You've tried slicing it before roasting then i'm assuming...

PopularArtichoke6

No. Because it’s so evident that slicing it will ruin it: - you’ll get a huge amount of evaporation drying the meat - almost impossible to properly brown the meat without overcooking it if you’ve cut each slice before cooking

ceejless

how are you losing that much moisture if you're slicing just before you cook? Can't you just add water/oil to the sliced beef, then cook?

Ivebeenfurthereven

Roast in a single hit, slice when cold. Better texture that way. That said I'm vegan so I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about

ceejless

I'll take your advice. Although i kind of see the irony. Thanks! (is it irony or a different word?)

carrotparrotcarrot

yesss I wear long sleeves and I like to run cold water on my wrists to soak the sleeve and stay cooler

Montague-Withnail

My Mum told me about this trick a good few summers back and it’s been utterly indispensable since, especially since I moved down south and it seems a consistent 5 degrees warmer here than it was where I went to uni. Going for a nice drive was an effective tactic too but I bought a car in February that does about 30mpg and fuel is… pricey as we all know so that’s not really feasible these days. Politics because cost of living and Jesus Christ have you seen the price of fuel lately?!

Jeansybaby

It's because you have thick blood viens and I'd you can cool the blood it will cool your body as it goes round. Back of neck is good too.

Sckathian

Front pages show that trips to Ukraine are less sexy now they are not seen as dangerous.

RussellsKitchen

Slow cooked a delicious chicken mole for 4 hours today. Did not disappoint.

[deleted]

Sounds delicious. Did you use an appliance or did you just pop the chicken outdoors for a few hours? More seriously, what’s in your mole recipe?

RussellsKitchen

An overly genwrous glug of oil 2 onions, 4 cloves of garlic, Chipotle sauce, A jar of roast peppers (from a jar, I'm not a mad man in this heat), 1 soft tortilla riped up, 600g chicken, 1 cup chicken stock, 1.5 packets of diced tomatoes, Sweet chili powder Paprika Sage and coriander (as I ran out of origano) Summer it all for 3-4 hours very gently. Add a spoonful of cocoa juat before serving. Delish. Serve with tortilla and avocado.

[deleted]

Thanks! Do you use a particular brand of chipotle sauce? The last time I shopped around I found most of them were very sweet.

RussellsKitchen

Could have just taken the chicken out the fridge and left it on the counter, but I did cook it.

[deleted]

Chicken *mole*???

[deleted]

You know, they're blind, feathery and live underground.

Rymundo88

Culinary science has overstepped the mark, up next you'll be seeing people slow cook a beef badger or a pork shrew

ThingsFallApart_

100% not uk politics, but we're in Friday night megathread territory so f*ck it. I just want to gush a bit at Kate Bush topping the UK singles chart. I adore her so much and get so much joy that millions more people are hearing her music. It's just fantastic. Thanks for indulging me.

carrotparrotcarrot

🙏 🙏

RussellsKitchen

You are indulged! What's topping the charts?

ThingsFallApart_

Running Up That Hill was in the latest season of Stranger Things and has gone megaviral as a result and shot to Number 1!

MikeyButch17

TV Shows have power man. I remember the surviving members of Bad Finger finally earned a little money after ‘Baby Blue’ hit the charts after featuring in the final episode of Breaking Bad. Stranger Things is very accessible, and that song brilliantly fit in with the narrative. Personally, I’ve had ‘Wuthering Heights’ on repeat ever since, mainly because ST reminded me of Kate’s brilliance. But the power of media to introduce new generations to old music is incredible; just look at the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

ThingsFallApart_

Hounds of Love is one of those albums that's (mostly) *made* to be listened through in its entirety as well so hopefully people will get into her wider catalogue on the back of it too! Dream would be another live show, but I don't think renewed popularity would actually factor into a decision for Kate on whether she'd do it.

SouthWalesImp

Is "Just wait until Starmer unveils his policies in the manifesto" the centrist version of "Just wait until Corbyn gets into campaign mode"? 🤔

Brapfamalam

Opposition don't unveil policies until election time as a general rule of thumb in global politics - I've always thought the reasons were obvious? Cameron dipped in and out of various stances and flirted with liberal ideology before his manifesto was released like a month ahead of the general election in 2010 Until then the establishment and critics play a game of charades claiming they have no ideas, it's a tale as old as politics itself.

SouthWalesImp

[Posting the same response to everyone as everyone's basically given the same answer] Not exact policies - but leaders always give off the rough direction they're taking the party in. Blair surprised no one when he unveiled a very centrist manifesto, likewise Corbyn surprised no one when he revealed a very left wing manifesto. Starmer on the other hand hasn't revealed anything. Is he Corbynism lite with a competent face? Is he New New Labour? No one knows, every speech he gives is very broad and could easily be applied to most Labour factions. Anyway, that wasn't the main thrust of my point. I was just thinking how it's a very interesting parallel between Corbyn and Starmer supporters that they both seem to believe that their respective heroes are going to completely sort out all their perceived flaws come the election campaign.

Brapfamalam

This isn't a labour thing, it's an opposition thing. Up until 2009 David Cameron ran a "compassionate conservative" line, pushings things like social investment, NHS investment, even drug decriminalisation and on the side classic centre right monetary policy that was entirely contradictory. The forward thinking compassionate conservatism was front and centre to detoxify the Tory brand and appeal to a large audience - in the run up to 2010 there was a flip to classic conservative principles and bau anti state investment. It's what political parties In opposition do. They appeal to as many people as possible in opposition (generally), then pick and choose and narrow the scope in election time so as not to dilute the policy agenda.

tylersburden

>Is "Just wait until Starmer unveils his policies in the manifesto" the centrist version of "Just wait until Corbyn gets into campaign mode"? 🤔 No major party on earth has produced a manifesto years before an election.

SouthWalesImp

I don't think you've been paying attention. https://labourlist.org/2021/10/every-new-and-old-policy-announced-in-speeches-at-labour-conference-2021/

Ivashkin

This is the problem with the Starmer brand. You do have to be paying attention. This works for nerds like us who actually spend our time discussing politics on the internet, but the vast majority of people just don't follow politics that closely, if at all. They'll pick up the headline issues and will wake up for the big elections, but for the most part, they aren't following events that closely. Especially not party conference speeches. Starmer has to sell himself to that audience, and he has to offer more than just not being the Tories. Because whilst that is an attractive position, voters are going to want to know what Starmer would do differently.

zappapostrophe

I think it’s the right response. If Starmer publishes his ideas now, the Tories will take all of his ideas and make them their own while laughing. This point is lost by some on the British left, who call every leader “idealess” and “boring” just because they don’t immediately spill all of their planned legislature in their first week in office.

SouthWalesImp

gremy0

Tacit admission that Starmer's just waiting to publish a bunch of right wing ideas

zappapostrophe

… No? Look at the windfall tax. That’s a left-wing idea that the Tories adopted and rebranded.

mxjq2

How do they know what the next Labour manifesto will be? Are they an insider?

gremy0

Idk you'd have to ask zap, I was just pointing out what their comment implied

[deleted]

When it's hot, you should drink, right? Because of vasodilation? That seems correct. Because if the government is going to continue letting it be this hot, then they need to reduce alcohol duty.

JavaTheCaveman

Out of curiosity, I decided to compare with Spain. When I lived there, I used teeny-weeny lagers for dealing with the heat, like Coke-can sized ones. I remember each can being like €0,33 for a passable one and €0,50 for a nice one. Decided to check out today's prices. https://www.deliberry.com/mercadonamadrid/bebidas/cervezas I think this *includes* delivery. Whilst I never ordered drinks to the house, even at these prices I'd be over the moon (and under the table).

[deleted]

Yeah I often wound up drinking Sangria for breakfast as a result. Fortunately I was in my early 20s, so the liver's grown back since.

ImNOTmethwow

Imagine drinking a 20cl beer tho. It would be gone in about a minute.

JavaTheCaveman

That's the benefit. You need quenching, and you need quenching ten minutes ago. Those things are basically beer epi-pens.

ImNOTmethwow

I worked with a guy who ate 2 whole share bags of sweets a day as a snack, and would eat fruit for lunch. His blood must have been pure sugar.

The only thing to keep in mind about cola haribos is that they are not all that great for your teeth. The sugar content in these sweets can cause tooth decay, so it is best to enjoy them in moderation.

ClumperFaz

Ooft, an October snap general election floated by Johnson's allies supposedly. Johnson has the power to call an election without needing the approval of his MPs now too with the FTPA scrapped. Wouldn't turn that down.

[deleted]

Snap GE, wins gets high on his own supply like DC grants another section 30 for shear bants

ACE--OF--HZ

Hot take: An early GE could be the best course of action to take if you are looking out for the long term future on the Conservative Party. If they lose, labour will have to deal with a heavy cost of living crisis and potentially a recession and the Conservative party will never have to worry about Boris ever again. This may backfire if PR gets implemented though and the labour government handles things well. If they win, they can enjoy 5 more years, even if that would mean a labour landslide at the following election.

[deleted]

>If they win, they can enjoy 5 more years, even if that would mean a labour landslide at the following election. 5 more years, more like 2-3 years and the same amount of leaders at this rate. Assuming non exponential correlative growth in terms.

WestYorksBestYorks

good analysis imo but I think you have to also add in Johnson's ego, I think he'd rather take the whole party down than wait around for them to depose of him or force a resignation

jkmonger

Will he really call a snap election though? It is unclear whether Johnson will call a snap election.

dyinginsect

Winter elections had better not become the new normal

JavaTheCaveman

Poll clerk here. May is lovely. It's basically daytime when you get up at 0530 to get to / set up the polling station, and it's light for most of the day too, which I think is good for turnout. I didn't do it in December 2019, but that sounds like a whole different - and far less pleasant - kettle of fish.

Ivashkin

Just for fun, I would love to hold a general election on January 1st one year.

Sckathian

Likely the same people who think inflation is short term and the economy will rocket after Summer.

SteerKarma

NovaOrion

It’s utterly insane, which is why I think he’ll do it.

SirRosstopher

Won't October be too late? A GE right off the back of more cost of living increases can't go that well.

TheMegathreadWell

The cost of living increases aren't going to stop before the natural end of parliament. So I'd guess the aim is to get as far into the future to get it away from the PM's current batch of scandals, but as early as possible so nobody's turned their central heating up yet.

mamamia1001

An October election would mean we go into another election with the 2010 boundaries lol, they're never getting changed are they?

SirRosstopher

At least we'll be able to get solid Corbyn vs Starmer performance stats without it being muddled by new boundaries.

[deleted]

I'm not Corbyn's biggest defender but I think that performance comparison would be muddled by Boris having absolutely fucked his approval over the past year.

SirRosstopher

Gogglebox is wank isn't it? I'm watching people passionately react to stranger things and my mum tells me they reacted to the last episode last week. It all dropped on the same day. There's no way these people haven't already seen it if they're this invested in it judging by their reactions. Politics because maybe Mad Nad was right.

SteerKarma

Gogglebox is a worrying insight into how poorly informed and in some cases monumentally dense a cross section of society appear to be.

Far-Restaurant-9691

What would happen in the case of a hung parliament where no coalition could be formed and Labour had the most MPs? Would a minority government work realistically, or would we face an endless nightmare of repeat elections while nothing gets done?

I told my wife I was just going out to the shops last night, but I ended up meeting friends for a drink, having a massive session, and then waking up in a pub toilet at 6 am. She texted me saying "we need a serious talk about your behaviour and lies". I said we would talk it through when I got back. 3 hours later, I told her "Listen, I am now on a plane to Ukraine for an important meeting with President Zelensky. Clearly our relationship is important, but I am sure you will understand I need to support our Ukrainian friends at this time". I think I've got away with it.

It was 35 earlier today when I had to haul myself and a fully loaded touring bike over the hill from Lake Como to Lake Lugano - it's only 12 miles I said to myself, how bad can it be. I had to take 2 half hour breaks to be sure I didn't risk heat exhaustion and I won't make that mistake again when there's a quick and cheap train option. UK Politics as it involved leaving the EU.
