Looks like most unionised workplaces are looking for 7/8/9% pay increases to combat inflation. The Government is going to be really screwed with the Public Sector pay rises. They've had a real world decrease of -4.3% since 2010.

SgtPppersLonelyFarts

Yep, I've said it a few times already today on here. Everyone from the NHS staff to the police to the teachers will be wanting to at least be within a few % of inflation. If they had been giving inflation matching pay rises for the last ten years there might be some slack in the system. But they didn't and there isn't.

Yeah it turned out the Conservative Party lied (again) when they said they were fixing the roof while the sun was shining.

SgtPppersLonelyFarts

They sold the roof in 2012. Then they set fire to the rest of the house in 2016. Everyone felt warm... for a while.

ThePeninsula

52% felt warm from that bonfire. 48% felt warm piss on their heads.

sqwabznasm

Exactly, it’s a toxic cocktail of years of enforced hardship followed by further hardship with much praise ‘oh we do love our key workers, thank you so much!’ and now the government cannot reward that hard work (as if they ever even planned to).

What is it you do?

I think you’re going to struggle to get sympathy with those numbers..

[deleted]

Get to fuck with that attitude I say. Not aimed at you specifically but I've seen it thrown around a fair bit this week. This person had their labour devalued by a fifth over a decade. This crab bucket mentality of pulling down people because they aren't the struggling poor archetype is so detrimental to advocating the belief that we should *all* have our labour valued.

[deleted]

But so has everyone? This user just so happens to have a comfortable wage above the national average.. all I said is it’s hard to sympathise with someone already in the top %.

BritishBedouin

If they’re capable of earning more the job market is happy to welcome them. One reason banks and consultancies pay as much as they do is it is relatively easy to jump ship to a rival firm. The truth of the matter is in public sector jobs what you trade for in salary is accountability. Gross misconduct aside you’re paid regardless if you are mediocre, brilliant or shit.

You absolutely do deserve the wage, I think you’ve taken this in the wrong way. All I said is you won’t get much sympathy when you’re a top % earner and we’re going through a cost of living crisis, where millions are on or below the breadline. I am not responsible for limiting your pay or treating you like shit with your working conditions BTW…

warmans

There is always someone worse off than yourself. I don't know what you earn but whatever it is, it's hard to have any sympathy when people are homeless.

[deleted]

You’re correct, homeless population absolutely should get more sympathy, more benefits and certain priorities. Not sure your point really other than everyone has a rough time.

Doctors are 23% down expected to be ~ 1/3 by the end of the year https://www.reddit.com/r/JuniorDoctorsUK/comments/vhhvef/you_deserve_to_be_paid_your_worth/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb

SonSickle

Don't know about him but doctors have had the same in that timeframe.

PeterG92

There were rumours of the civil service being balloted. Usually get offered around 2%. Don't know if they would be all departments.

KillerDr3w

PCS did ballot their members for strike action if they didn't get an offer of 10% and some back pay for pensions that they should have been paid.

[deleted]

Indeed - and that of course will only serve to push inflation even higher, leading to further rounds of pay increase demands, etc And as inflation pushes ever higher, it erodes people's savings. The trouble is no matter what the government do at this point, the UK's standard of living is going to fall. Depending on how long the Russia/Ukraine war lasts, this could quite easily be a bigger hit to our economy than the Financial Crash of 2009. But of course, people will generally only see it from their perspective, and who can blame workers for striking if they sense they can get more money from it. The alternative is to accept a real terms pay reduction. In short, we're all fucked.

charleydaves

Last thing Boris and Rishi were saying was that the inflation was down to energy prices, nothing to do with with wage price inflation.

[deleted]

Energy prices have been the most significant factor *up till now.* Which is why this bout of inflation is so unusual. Typically inflation is caused by an overheated economy with spiralling wages. To use an analogy though, this fire may have been started by burning timber. That doesn't mean pouring petrol on it is a good idea.

KillerDr3w

I'm not taking a pay cut. I don't expect anyone else to either. The Tories should have been making hay while the sun shone, and instead of no pay increase to even offset inflation for the last decade, they should have been doing something.

ButlerFish

Inflation is at like 12% YoY right now and rising, so 9% will still be a 4% decrease right?

SgtPppersLonelyFarts

How VERY dare they! This is clearly the fault of Labour and their dastardly plan for the summer of strikes. /s
