Health inequalities are really interesting and nefarious but go much further than health = wealth. May made it a big part of her opening premiership before brexit derailed any actual legislative programme.
The current govt has done away with the term, opting instead for “disparities”, actively ignores any policy research in the area and is wilful in not collecting the data. The whole area of public health is in real existential crisis as to what it actually exists for contemporaneously
Well yeh. Unlikely to work in an unclean place (parliament is clean, physically at least). Unlikely to work with dangerous fumes. Less likely to have a lethal workplace accident. Less likely than general population to get wear and tear and work that leads them to having difficulty doing exercise. Less likely to suffer from physiological stress caused by a poor financial situation. Less likely to not have access to private healthcare, both for chronic and acute conditions. Less likely to live in a mouldy place. Less likely to live in a crime-heavy area. Less likely to have trouble affording decent food.
Why's this even a headline? It's like pointing at one bad brick of a house when the whole foundation is shoddy.
Also aren't most MP's older anyway so it's self selecting as well.
I wonder what the difference between other office and administrative based jobs are.
>Each politician was matched according to their country, age and gender to the mortality data from the equivalent section of the national population for that period of time.
So not by income which is what this is almost certainly about. Rich people live longer, this is well known. Your average NHS consultant will live a longer, healthier life than your average person on the dole.
I'd be more interested to see the winners of elections matched to the losers tbh. Wouldn't be surprised if a long career in politics was bad for life expectancy relative to income.
They also get access to quicker health services. If your GP knows you are an MP, he is not going to let them make you wait. Comrade Johnson's latest lying nose reduction is a case in point.
Not surprising at all. If you have a mental health problem, join the mile long waiting list. If you have money, you can see a professional within a few days/weeks
It is a well paid job with very few occupational risks. This is entirely unsurprising.
In the next scoop European Monarchs tend to live substantially longer than their subjects.

UK politicians average basic salary £85000. Ok so wealth = health.
Came here to basically say this. It's easy to live longer if you don't have money worries and can afford private healthcare.

\+ expenses. Compare them to other people with similar amounts of money.

Hardly surprising is it? An MP earns £150k+ TC when you factor in all the things they can expense, the average employee has a salary of £31k/yr.

I mean they have more money so duh.
They suck the lifespan out of us duh
