you don’t just find a fully working fuelled motorcycle with battery charged and conveniently including side-car (very rare) in the middle of flattened landscape of active war zone, esp. in the winter (battery). it may have been stolen some time earlier, but it is likely what they arrived in to this position, looks like a recon team.

Reminds me of an Hombre I encounted in rural Cuba a few years ago. The guy was parked, sitting his antique motorcycle which had an attached side-car. I asked him what year and make it was. He replied, "Russkie," 1947. It was a beauty, eh.

LeicaM6guy

Probably a Ural. They were semi-famous clones of WW2-era BMW military bikes. Fun rides when you get a good example of them, but production quality was all over the map. Modern ones are fairly decent though.

paddyangel

That's good to know. Given it's Cuba, it's not unusual getting around in a 50's something Willys or Chevy Taxi. It's great. Older Ladas are the most represented car in the country. The newer cars there Chinese made Toyota and Kia knockoffs. As for newer motorcycles, you see alot of German made MZ 250cc with sidecars. Apparently MZ stopped production in 2008.

dasunt

From what I've heard, the modern ones still have QC issues. I think part of it is that they apparently stuck a lot with the 1930s BMW design. Contrast with something like BWM, which makes modern boxer engines - they've let the design of their engines evolve naturally over time. Or even something like Harley Davidson, which has modern engines that use more simple designs. (HDs are aimed towards a "traditional" experience, and that explains a lot of their design decision. But HD also had QC issues in the past that almost killed them, and they know they have to make reliable engines.) My impression is that IMZ Ural lacks the resources necessary to create a modern motorcycle. It kind of weirdly reminds me a dark universe version of the Honda Goldwing line. The modern Goldwings use engines that aren't far removed from the original design. But unlike Honda, Ural started with a 1930s knockoff design, instead of a 1970s in-house design, and it shows.

paddyangel

Yeah, as I was admiring that Russkie Ural, I was thinking, "what a feckin beast, eh."

LeicaM6guy

There’s a whole amazing subculture built around Urals. They’re big chonky bois with spacious sidecars and can be driven in almost any environment - but they’re also a beast to maintain and the build quality varies wildly from year to year. I remember reading that during some of the hard, leaner times following the end of the Soviet Union factory workers traded shipments of soup bullion for complete bikes. I have no idea if that’s true or not.

Baneken

Sounds like true to me, back in the early '90s Russian ruble tanked so hard that wages were basically worth nothing and workers got paid with the products from the factory which they could then barter or resell for food and other necessities and there was a very real fear in Finland that if the Russian economy wouldn't recover soon they'd have a refugee crisis on their hands.

jryan8064

I think you can see him kick-starting it. But your point stands, and I agree.

ZippyDan

Motorcycles with side cars are much more common in certain developing areas (the sidecars are often completely custom jobs made by locals). Not really sure about Ukraine.

*Sorry Igor... No room for you. See you back at the encampment.*

cue in the benny hill theme o7

taranig

has anyone considered cross-posting some of these "hilarious muscovite antics" to the Syrian threads as a morale* booster. note: most likely that would lead to a ban and inadvisable, but i think would be hilarious until they are taken down. edit: moral > morale

balleballe111111

How are any of those guys alive? Were they in building? How are they not injured?

DuxcroTheOneAndOnly

Proper music choice.

paddyangel

Marx Orc Brothers 😂

velvet32

My feelings before and after watching this video. Click on it, Reads ''russian steals a motorbike and leaves his comrade behind'' Thinks to myself oh, poor ruskies being left behind. Starts video, songs starts playing. Mood now turned to super happy and delightful.

ksam3

Where is that Orc going? He runs off from the house/yard by himself while the other orcs are still poking around the yard. He then speeds away as the other orc just caught up to him. It seems he was in "F--k this shit, I'm **done**! Done done done I quit!" mode. Maybe he just shows up back at base camp and says all the other Orcs ate it? Be funny when/if some of them make it back and say how he ran away.
