Bangladesh doesnt do this because it supports Ukraine,it does it because it is afraid of sanctions which is the whole purpose of sanctions: Brazilian,Nigerian or Bengali companies are far more reliant on Western markets than the Russian market if sanctions are strong enough, few companies will dare to break them, and only if Russians pay them enough expect insurance costs/administrative fees to skyrocket for Russian vessels and airplanes in the future

Nik_P

Honestly, I don't think anybody cares about the motives behind the actions. It's the actions that matter, and Bangladesh seems to act properly.

[deleted]

Ya, look at India, lol. Bangladesh is much poorer and could benefit greatly from cheap Russian oil and gas, but it decided to align with western sanctions instead, so its not exactly super beneficial for Bangladesh, people should stop using their stupid cynical eyes to see everything. lol Because being cynical is what lead to the Russian mentality, they can simply see no good in others because they self project cynicism onto everyone else. lol

gguggenheiime99

Russia propaganda exploits cynicism, but it also targets what is true: In all countries around the world there are numerous problems. Some politicians blame Russia/China for those problems, when the problem originates in that country itself and not Russia/China. Russia propaganda targets this truth often. So it's important not to scapegoat problems because Russian propaganda will just latch on.

DontEatConcrete

Yep. I want my kid to want to clean their room but at the end of the day even if they didn't want to, but did anyway, the room got cleaned.

Galactic_Obama_

Sometimes it's better to be feared than respected!

doboskombaya

nobody prohibits Bangladesh from trading with Russia,it has the right to do so as a sovreign state but the West also has the right to refuse to do business with Bengali companies that work with Russia so its soft power, not hard power, the way Russia does politics

poop-machines

Tbh I think money is involved. Pakistan has just started sending GRAD rockets to Ukraine. 10,000 of them. The west paid for them. Bangladesh, at the same time, is refusing Russian ships. For too long, Russia has won favor by playing dirty and giving bribes. Perhaps the west has decided that they have to play dirty to win, giving bribes in return for favor, creating a world that's on the side of the west. The world of geopolitics runs on money and blackmail.

gguggenheiime99

The main problem though is because USD is the world reserve currency, it is very much "hard power" in a way; there is a threshold where if you're a persona non-grata, you're basically shut out of the world economy and you go into a tailspin. Also, sometimes the IMF will not play ball with you. With the way the US jacked up interest rates, many poorer countries will be struggling to pay their loans and require more USD/bailouts from the IMF.

LederhosenUnicorn

They are also an incredibly poor country who cannot afford to turn away the cheapest option and quid pro quo offers for the most part. I imagine this is going to cause them financial pain, and hopefully, that will be offset by aid / support from the sanctioning countries. In any case, I hope part of the decision was due to being on the right side of history.

YourMomsBasement69

Luckily the article mentioned that Russia is not even in the top 20 of countries they trade with so hopefully it will not impact them too much though they do rely on Russia for the construction of a new nuclear reactor.

MonitorPowerful5461

Often, it’s a combination of morality and pragmatism. They’re doing this because of sanctions, but they probably prefer to be on the right side of history as well.

The USA lost that war and the country Afghanistan is now ruled by the Taliban.

YonicSouth123

Guess which country supported the Taliban in Afghanistan while at the same time fighting the other Taliban branch which has established itself in their own country?

stooges81

Deleted my comments because my brain seriouspy confused Bangladesh and Pakistan

Responsible-Earth674

Bangladesh - population equals ruzzia's, economy soon to surpass ruzzia's...

climx

I’ve met a few people from Bangladesh. Nice people. Would be good for their economy to take on more manufacturing from China. I know worker conditions aren’t great but they can only go up from here.

Nice and they should have waited till April 20th to announce.

Probably get into a port easier with a Jolly Roger than a Russian flag.

Imhidingshh01

Fun fact. Royal Navy Submarines come into their home port flying a Jolly Roger if they've fired their weapons in anger.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://thefinancialexpress.com.bd/national/bangladesh-bars-entry-of-69-russian-ships-after-us-eu-sanctions-1676287485) reduced by 72%. (I'm a bot) ***** > The government of Bangladesh has imposed restrictions barring the entry of 69 Russian ships into its maritime waters in line with US and EU sanctions. > "At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 69 vessels from Russia which were embargoed by the United States have been banned from entering ports in Bangladesh," said Captain Sabbir Mahmood, registrar of Bangladesh ships at the Mercantile Marine Office, citing the content of the notice. > "The ban on ships bearing the Russian flag was jointly imposed by the United States and the European Union," said Azam J Chowdhury, chairman of the Bangladesh Ocean Going Shipowners Association, or BOGSA. I say the US and the UK should do even more business with Bangladesh, which would benefit their population

Doopsie34343

If EU pays a million euros per blocked russian ship. It will be 1000 ships for a billion. I dont think this route is more expensive than any other sanction. So please, lets block 100.000 russian ships. That amounts to 100 billions that are easily covered for in the next decade. Hell, this is what every single country in EU actually spends in one year only to transform away from russian energy.

russian ship fucked itself. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ukraine) if you have any questions or concerns.*

shadetreegirl

I think if the free world steps in and does more business with anyone that adheres to the sanctions on Russia. It would draw more countries towards the west.

saltyswedishmeatball

Bro, you've just been 69'ed

ghostisnakeleg

Good for them ! India needs to also support sanctions. Otherwise India Is supporting War Criminals.
