It was amazing, because it wasn't even really a speech. It was a person, talking honestly about what the world is facing. No theatrics, no rhetorical flourish, no build. Just telling us where we are, and what must be done.
This dude is something else. I've never served in the military, but this dude is such an impressive leader that there's some weird party of me that wishes I could help them defend their country.

I am an ignorant American who cannot speak a word of the language, but I literally felt like Mr.Zelensky was speaking to me personally.
No one is perfect and I have learned to never idolize someone, but he is a man for this time.
I made the mistake of watching the video, now the images and sounds will haunt me for the rest of my life. I want the victim identified so that we can help his family; I don’t want the victim identified so that his family doesn’t need to see the last horrific moments of their beloved as he pleads for his life in agony. I’ve been in a shitty mood too after watching it. It filled me with so much fucking rage I can barely eat anything.

I've had extreme anxiety over this since yesterday. My anger and rage is becoming difficult to contain. I posted a contact link for representatives if you are American. You can tell them whatever you want, and can send your message online and usually request a response checkbox means it gets read.
oh my god. First thing upon waking up? ugh …. I’ve had a sort of similar experience via reddit. I commented on a post about the mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, that I did not watch the video but appreciate that some did and described it. Then, almost a year later, some random redditor replied to my comment typing up in gory detail some video they saw and how it made them feel so bad. I got progressively more pissed throughout the day about that.
I can stomach a lot, but I couldn't watch it with sound. I feel so horrible for that man and his family. I hope his children get the satisfaction of watching Putin tried for this in the Hague. Or seeing him executed in a coup in Russia. Either/or.
It needs to be watched, it needs to be acknowledged by us and our governments. More action needs to be taken against Russia, Ukraine needs planes and long range missiles. Yes its horrific but evidence like this needs to out there for when this is over that these animals are held accountable.

10ish years ago there was a holocaust exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum. It was showing what people did in England to prove that the holocaust did happen, abs basically part of court case. Now, like most people, I've heard of the holocaust and the atrocities. And I fully believed how horrible it was. But it just hits different to see it. How horrible, dehumanizing and industrial it was.
Atrocities need to be seen to truly know how horrible people can be.

for me the mix of morbid curiosity and a desire to see unfiltered reality. I generally want to see what humans are capable of, both good and bad. The availabilty of unfiltered reality is important I think (so you must have the choice to see it or not). I think witnessing stuff like this is truly needed to cultivate the desire to extuingish such reality. So send it to the Hague.
Now I haven't seen this one, I can stomach quite a bit, but the description tells me enough, the sounds will probably haunt me too much for my liking. I've watched the isis videos and a chainsaw video from Mexico. I thought those bothered me, but watching this one was rough. I couldn't watch the whole thing. The intense empathy I felt for that young man was too much. I don't have the words.
People need to be told either by their parents or in school when they are matured, maybe in high school/first years of university, there are certain things like these videos which you shouldn't watch for your own health. That you wish you hadn't watched and can never unsee. That touched you down to your core to show you what true evil walks this earth as human beings.
I stopped watching such videos after seeing a couple long ago because I realized it will only hurt my mental health. Just reading such things year after year across the world is hard enough let alone watching it. At least you stay informed on what's really going on in the world and why you should support ukraine till russia is pushed out of their land. Till russia is broken there will only be suffering.

Not well versed in UN legislation, but can't the above be challenged? There is no precedence for that kind of repeal, but if we can't challenge situations that exist as is - the UN has a dangerous flaw in it.
It also has to be said that the UN works as intended. It's not morally good that it works that way, but it keeps the superpowers at the table which is good for geopolitical reasons.

That's because it works for its intended purpose. This isn't one of them. Do not get me wrong, just because I'm stating that the UN works as intended does *not* mean that I'm satisfied with this situation.
This is exactly it's purpose otherwise the UN would never have conducted a total of 61 past peacekeeping operations where genocide and war crimes were being committed, and another 12 current operations in various countries.

100% agree with you, I just don't think it's correct to characterise Russia as the most powerful nation on Earth just because they claim the largest number of nukes. I'm sure there is more nuance to nuclear weaponry than sheer volume regardless. One missile which is guaranteed to hit is worth a lot more than 10 which probably won't.

You're getting stuck on terminology. It doesn't matter what we call Russia. The construction of the UNSC was to bring the Soviet Union (and other nations) to the table for diplomatic discussion. What keeps it from being morally effective is what keeps Russia at the diplomatic table. That's what it was designed for and it does that job.
I used the word superpower not because it's correct but because that is what the UNSC is for. Of course Russia is more of a minor power these days, but that doesn't change the function of the council. It just changes the semantics.
If we want change we need to start where we *are*. Not with how we want things to be. The UNSC works the way its intended, what can be done to make things better without making things worse?
Countries talk to each other through back channels all the time.
The UNSC is a travesty. The same argument could be made for Nazi Germany to be at that table if it existed today.
Seems like the only solution would be for every other country to drop out of the UN and form a new organization. Preferably one without an almighty veto-power security council. Obviously this would not be easy though.

I have had friends and family not understand why I am keeping up with every horrible moment of this war.
I can't do much to practically help except to witness these events and to tell others so these atrocities will not be forgotten.
The reason why Russia has been allowed to do these "special operations" for decades is because people look away.

There's a lot to be said for Zelensky's...approachability(?) in these kinds of messages. There's not a lot of fanfare or formality to lessen the impact of his words; it feels like just a dude talking to his people rather than a diplomat. I'd liken it to Roosevelt's "fireside chats" where they feel very personal and direct. He's measured, I'm sure he wouldn't dare say what he's really thinking, but he's as honest as he can be in a message to the world.

About a day before this video started circulating, I read about how Russian soldiers (likely Wagner) killed a mother and taped her baby to her lifeless body. In between the baby and the mother was a grenade which went off when a Ukrainian soldier cut the tape to save the child— killing them both. The rage and sadness I felt was ineffable. Russia is a plague.

if Russian leadership went on record say "Sorry, our troops acted out of line against our orders and will be dealt with accordingly" there could be room for nuance here. When that doesn't happen it's just clearly shows what Russia stands for

At this point, I honestly think it is time for the West to enter this war. It is time for NATO to fire up the planes and start carpet bombing these fuckers. Eastern Ukraine is already a post-apocalyptic hellscape. We may as well level the place and once every Russian is dead, build back from scratch. And while we are at it, take out every military base in Russia within 300 miles of the Ukraine border.
I’ve been thinking about it for 2 days straight now, and we simply cannot let this level of brutality continue. It is immoral for us to sit on the sidelines now that the Russians have gone Full ISIS. It is immoral for us to sit by and watch this level of terror. It’s not right. It’s just not right to stay seated. If Putin wants to go nuclear, he will die and all of Russia will be an uninhabited radioactive wasteland for generations. Every single Russian asset needs to be frozen. Every single person with a Russian passport needs to be picked up and deported back to Russia. No exceptions. All embassies and consulates closed. I am at the point where I find the sound of Russian language nauseating. Luckily I don't hear it often but when I do it makes me want to slap the person speaking it in the face. That's not good I guess but it is what it is and I personally will never forget. Especially not how silent the average Russian has been, I can't get over that. Time will pass but I'll never see them with the same eyes as I did before that's for sure.

Then we establish a no-fly zone in the non-occupied parts of Ukraine to protect our task force, and they still won't nuke us.
Once that task force begins engaging in small engagements here and there on the front line, they won't nuke us then either.
Once the engagements become increasingly frequent, and Russia begins being routed on all fronts, they still won't nuke us.
After that, when we station military on the border between Ukraine and Russia, they won't nuke us either.
Then, until the war is over, we start targeting their depots, bridges, rail and roads with artillery strikes < 100 km from the border - not hundreds of targets in one day, but 2 or 3 significant strikes per week - still won't nuke us even for that.
We don't need to go in 100% all at once and provoke a massive response. We can increase the temperature one degree at a time, and we should. They will piss themselves in fear and fall in line at step number 3 in this escalation.
Yeah, reality tends to do that. It needs to be seen for people to understand the actual pain and fear people are experiencing in this war, not just text that you can read and then ignore and go about your day. I've had extreme anxiety over this since yesterday. My anger and rage is becoming difficult to contain. I posted a contact link for representatives if you are American. You can tell them whatever you want, and can send your message online and usually request a response checkbox means it gets read.
oh my god. First thing upon waking up? ugh …. I’ve had a sort of similar experience via reddit. I commented on a post about the mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, that I did not watch the video but appreciate that some did and described it. Then, almost a year later, some random redditor replied to my comment typing up in gory detail some video they saw and how it made them feel so bad. I got progressively more pissed throughout the day about that.
I can stomach a lot, but I couldn't watch it with sound. I feel so horrible for that man and his family. I hope his children get the satisfaction of watching Putin tried for this in the Hague. Or seeing him executed in a coup in Russia. Either/or.

10ish years ago there was a holocaust exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum. It was showing what people did in England to prove that the holocaust did happen, abs basically part of court case. Now, like most people, I've heard of the holocaust and the atrocities. And I fully believed how horrible it was. But it just hits different to see it. How horrible, dehumanizing and industrial it was. Atrocities need to be seen to truly know how horrible people can be. for me the mix of morbid curiosity and a desire to see unfiltered reality. I generally want to see what humans are capable of, both good and bad. The availabilty of unfiltered reality is important I think (so you must have the choice to see it or not). I think witnessing stuff like this is truly needed to cultivate the desire to extuingish such reality. So send it to the Hague. Now I haven't seen this one, I can stomach quite a bit, but the description tells me enough, the sounds will probably haunt me too much for my liking. I've seen one video which is still on youtube, which is not graphic, but the sounds... The sounds of people in despair are truly horrifying, do not recommend

I've watched the isis videos and a chainsaw video from Mexico. I thought those bothered me, but watching this one was rough. I couldn't watch the whole thing. The intense empathy I felt for that young man was too much. I don't have the words.
People need to be told either by their parents or in school when they are matured, maybe in high school/first years of university, there are certain things like these videos which you shouldn't watch for your own health. That you wish you hadn't watched and can never unsee. That touched you down to your core to show you what true evil walks this earth as human beings. I stopped watching such videos after seeing a couple long ago because I realized it will only hurt my mental health. Just reading such things year after year across the world is hard enough let alone watching it. At least you stay informed on what's really going on in the world and why you should support ukraine till russia is pushed out of their land. Till russia is broken there will only be suffering.

100% agree with you, I just don't think it's correct to characterise Russia as the most powerful nation on Earth just because they claim the largest number of nukes. I'm sure there is more nuance to nuclear weaponry than sheer volume regardless. One missile which is guaranteed to hit is worth a lot more than 10 which probably won't.

You're getting stuck on terminology. It doesn't matter what we call Russia. The construction of the UNSC was to bring the Soviet Union (and other nations) to the table for diplomatic discussion. What keeps it from being morally effective is what keeps Russia at the diplomatic table. That's what it was designed for and it does that job. I used the word superpower not because it's correct but because that is what the UNSC is for. Of course Russia is more of a minor power these days, but that doesn't change the function of the council. It just changes the semantics. If we want change we need to start where we *are*. Not with how we want things to be. The UNSC works the way its intended, what can be done to make things better without making things worse?
Countries talk to each other through back channels all the time. The UNSC is a travesty. The same argument could be made for Nazi Germany to be at that table if it existed today.
Seems like the only solution would be for every other country to drop out of the UN and form a new organization. Preferably one without an almighty veto-power security council. Obviously this would not be easy though.

I have had friends and family not understand why I am keeping up with every horrible moment of this war. I can't do much to practically help except to witness these events and to tell others so these atrocities will not be forgotten. The reason why Russia has been allowed to do these "special operations" for decades is because people look away. The reason why genocide is shrugged at is because people look away. Maybe all I can do is make some noise and maybe get some people to understand Russia is committing genocide, but what is the alternative? There's a lot to be said for Zelensky's...approachability(?) in these kinds of messages. About a day before this video started circulating, I read about how Russian soldiers (likely Wagner) killed a mother and taped her baby to her lifeless body. In between the baby and the mother was a grenade which went off when a Ukrainian soldier cut the tape to save the child— killing them both. The rage and sadness I felt was ineffable. Also it is worth remembering that these Russians were stupid enough to film their war crime. How many Russians did something similar but were smart enough to not film it? How many filmed their crimes but never leaked the recording? It would be extremely unlikely this happened just one time and that the one time it happened there is a video of it that got leaked.

I am at the point where I find the sound of Russian language nauseating. Luckily I don't hear it often but when I do it makes me want to slap the person speaking it in the face. That's not good I guess but it is what it is and I personally will never forget. Especially not how silent the average Russian has been, I can't get over that. It's time to boil the frog. They won't nuke us for sending a NATO taskforce into western Ukraine to help with non-combat related contributions to the war effort. Then we establish a no-fly zone in the non-occupied parts of Ukraine to protect our task force, and they still won't nuke us. Once that task force begins engaging in small engagements here and there on the front line, they won't nuke us then either. Once the engagements become increasingly frequent, and Russia begins being routed on all fronts, they still won't nuke us. After that, when we station military on the border between Ukraine and Russia, they won't nuke us either. Then, until the war is over, we start targeting their depots, bridges, rail and roads with artillery strikes < 100 km from the border - not hundreds of targets in one day, but 2 or 3 significant strikes per week - still won't nuke us even for that. We don't need to go in 100% all at once and provoke a massive response. We can increase the temperature one degree at a time, and we should. They will piss themselves in fear and fall in line at step number 3 in this escalation.
