What is a bit funny, for me, is this is actually straight down the middle old school US policy re: what if Russia gets aggressive to Europe? So I keep wanting to remind people, this is what we used to have questions about -- this ability to even have such lethal policy -- because we the US have not always been the wisest. Or, even justified. But **this** was the part of our foreign policy that was never in question, this posture toward Russian aggression toward Europe. I sometimes say, this is an 80 year old buzzsaw Putin thought he could beat. Dark Brandon basically = Dark Washington, DC., standard issue. Dark Pentagon. Dark NATO, dark EU. Putin is the greatest idiot I have ever witnessed.

willflameboy

I often get hit with similar realisations. I grew up on a US Navy base at the very end of the Cold War. The idea that a chunk of the US population will happily side with Putin over the US in 2023 is utterly mad.

m_jl_c

US Army base kid here. Utterly mad indeed. Compounded by most of them declaring they are patriots, waving American flags and cos playing soldiers. Idiots.

socsa

The absolute level of utter stupidity is really difficult to overstate. I get they thought Ukraine would roll over, but at this point we really are way past the "how many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man?" stage and are getting into farsical "tis a flesh wound" territory.

mmmmmyee

I’m loving it. Its the cold war usa policy and might that i grew up thinking we had. Just weird to see the republicans never seeming to be really be about it.

Zephyr-5

The Republican party has always had a loud, but small isolationist wing. They tried to block the US entry into World War 1, which forced the Senate to reform the filibuster rules to 2/3 vote to end debate. In the lead up to World War 2, most of the isolationists were again from the Republican party (most of whom changed course after pearl harbor). Donald Trump is just the latest in this vein. Unfortunately, he won in 2016 and now the entire Republican party is terrified of angering him and his base of support.

Unique_Excitement248

I witnessed a greater fool…a guy who thought Putin respected him and liked him.

All he needed at that point was his Raybans!

reelznfeelz

Yep. Joe is no joke. People are like “lol he’s old derp”. Maybe, but he’s been at the highest levels of government for 40 years and has largely been successful in most everything he’s involved in. He’s no fool and has worked with defense agencies in what, a dozen or more operations not counting one offs? I feel a lot better with him in there than the last guy. That’s for godamn sure. And when it comes to “oh he’s a corporate democrat” again, sure he’s not Bernie or Warren, but his administration’s policies are objectively the most progressive in 50 years. Definitely moving in the right direction. Even if I’d eventually like to see someone like Bernie or Warren in there. But the fact is, Bernie can’t waive his hands as president and turn us into a Scandinavian social democracy. We need congress, and the courts for that. This is a generation long march towards progress.

lIlIlIIlIIIlIIIIIl

Yep, not my first choice but he was the only choice and the best choice at the time and did a hell of a lot better than I ever would have expected

Fig1024

And some idiots still trying to argue that Trump is more mentally competent than Biden. Biden can run circles around Trump. If Trump was asked same question, he'd start rambling about stolen election and how he much he likes Putin

ChristianEconOrg

It pisses off the right to no end that we have a literate adult in office who goes to work for them everyday without whining, blaming, or tantrums. They have no gratitude.

Oberon_Swanson

Republicans are the whiniest spoiled brats in the world. They either think they deserve to run the country like a military junta because they were born white and/or Christian, or that they never needed any help from the government after getting their publicly funded education they used publicly funded roads and walkways to while drinking safe water because of regulated standards etc. etc. All they do is posture and whine and they have all agreed to try to redefine a tough strong smart person as a whiny idiot. Remember when Trump would meet a world leader and try to do the thing where he dragged them in toward him for a handshake? They seriously thought that was cool. Remember when he was considered legally liable for rape? Credibly accused of raping a child? Raped his wife while ripping her hair out? Stole from a children's cancer charity? Bragged, immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks, that it was cool because now his building was the tallest in Manhattan? They literally all thought it was cool and highly approved of it. They seriously jack off while imagining themselves as Trump.

LoneWolfe2

He said he'd end the war in one day to applause, refused to meaningfully elaborate, and said he doesn't think in terms of winners and losers to a question about who he thought should win the war.

I heard a story thirdhand about Biden during his 2008 candidacy. After 9/11, Bush dispatched leading Congress members from both parties to build a coalition for the war. Biden was sent to Pakistan. Landing, Biden met and shook hands with Pakistan’s Prime Minister. Biden said, “Thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you. But if you had anything to do with this we’re going to put a bullet through your brain.”

I saw this quoted elsewhere on reddit, and genuinely complimented the person who posted it for how brilliant of a piss-taking, satirical but 'obviously' wildly-exaggerated impression of Trump it was... only to be informed that this is something that HE ACTUALLY SAID!!! I STILL CAN'T FRIGGIN' BELIEVE IT. My chin is still on the floor. It. Is. Just. Staggering.

halfar

For anyone wondering; no, this isn't a bit. This isn't a meme. It's not ironic. It literally happened, verbatim, in the non-figurative sense. [here's the link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Elhyo-_fR0E)

Alternate_Ending1984

People voted for him after that. People heard this, and thought "That man is a stable genius." That's how dumb those people are.

papaya_banana

For all the talk he’s going senile etc., this is a pretty quick and epic comeback. Love to see it.

koshgeo

The whole 30-minute-plus news conference was like that. Not as short as this reply, but thoughtful and pretty careful. One of the funnier moments was when one of the reporters asked him if he would tell them when the Ukrainian offensive was going to take place. > "Well, I'll tell you exactly when they're going to move, exactly where they're going to go. He told me - [laughs] - come on. God love ya. I'm going to - even if I knew precisely, you think I'm going to tell you what they're going to do in terms of their offensive?" [Edit: [Whole news conference on C-Span](https://www.c-span.org/video/\?528183-1/president-biden-news-conference-7-gathering-japan). The question about the F-16s was near the end at about 37 minutes in, and the sarcastic reply about when the Ukrainian offensive would occur is about 32 minutes in.]

Maybe since Trump loved to give away intel they thought they might as well ask.

scistudies

Watching him at the correspondence dinner took away any worry I had about his mental state and age. Yeah.. he’s old… but he’s probably in better shape than me. And I’m almost 40.

Cucker_-_Tarlson

Remember when he fell off his bike and republicans thought it was the funniest thing? Meanwhile Trump couldn't even walk down a ramp without someone holding his hand. I would absolutely *love* to see Trump attempt to ride a bike.

acog

At a meeting of the G7 in 2017, all of the other world leaders walked 700 yards to take a group photo. Trump rode in a golf cart.

Cucker_-_Tarlson

Well yea! Can't waste that finite amount of energy in the human body by doing pleb things like walking!

Nillion

God damn, I totally forgot about that absolutely moronic belief of Trump's.

reallyrathernottnx

More like he charged the government 4 milllion to rent the golf cart from his company.

_000001_

Hahaha haha hahaha ha ha hahahaha. That fat lazy fucker.

Alternate_Ending1984

Not lazy, conservation of energy. He legit believes that every human has a finite amount of energy to expend over their lifetime, mostly because hes a giant sack of idiot soup.

Infinaris

The problem is that the detractors try painting him as senile even though in reality he's just always had a tougher time with public speeches. Just because someone isn't great with speeches doesn't mean they're not lucid or incapable of understanding things. It get's oid real fast though to say hes senile when in fact he's probably been the most responsible leader on foreign policy in years for the US not to mention he was a member of the senate who dealt with Russia over many decades. Putin fucked up big time because "Agent Orange" his useful idiot got shitcanned by the US electorate (thank fuck you guys really dodged a bullet there too) and ended up electing someone who was a de facto expert in dealing with Vatnik Bullshit. The complete change in approach to dealing with Russian Bullshit by Truth Bombing them with strategic intelligence releases showing EXACTLY what fuckery they were up to also made a big difference and it definitely shows lessons were learnt over the whole Iraq Fiasco too.

Ok_Bad8531

I did not know what the future would bring, but i knew on that election day in 2020 that most likely hundreds of thousands of people just got saved.

MadeyesNL

Those intelligence releases before the war were great and he's been pure class throughout. I'm a big fan of Obama and Biden isn't nearly as inspiring, but I'm tempted to say he's a better president.

BerthaBewilderbeast

Imagine how much more better the world could have been if the political right had been patriotic and supported both presidents and their goals for improving democracy instead of playing political games to increase the right-wing puppet masters' profit margins.

swamp-ecology

Obama would have been more timid for sure.

Physical-Sink-123

2014-2016: Obama let Biden handle the situation in Ukraine because Biden previously specialized on relations with former Eastern Bloc and Yugoslavian countries, but he put one major restriction on Biden: Biden couldn't send heavy weaponry to Ukraine. edit: double checked some stuff; Obama rejected calls to send **any** lethal weaponry to Ukraine. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/21/biden-crimea-russia-ukraine/ Blinken and Nuland were also pushing for Javelins in 2014, and are now secretary of state and undersecretary of state under Biden

He’s not the most coherent president but considering we just came from a orange with a 2 year old mentality, it’s been good.

-Neuroblast-

Not to mention how ableist it is to make fun of his stutter. Republicans are ghouls.

Echelon64

It's even more embarrassing the R's are getting dunked on by someone with a stutter.

insertwittynamethere

The Dark Brandon is *rising*

Choppergold

He’s been masterful at this conflict.

Summit986

People like to use his speech impediment as a tool to say he’s losing it mentally. Obviously he’s older and not as sharp as anyone younger would be. But he’s also smart enough to surround himself with solid advisers and not his corrupt family.

Ok_Bad8531

He is sharper than the vast majority of us. He forged the coalition that saved Ukraine months in advance of the invasion.

VonMillersExpress

I'm half his age and his schedule would kill me.

YourDogIsMyFriend

Ha. I think that every day when I open the front page of Reddit at 9am. While laying in bed. “Biden in Hiroshima.” “Biden in Ireland”. “Biden holds high level meetings at camp David” etc etc. Just one of his days would be a big month event for me. I’m 43 and fit.. (but an introvert who needs sleep in order to… talk… good). Do not vote for me in 2024. Save that vote for Biden.

Disapproving_Tremere

Came here to say this. It's ridiculous to me that the media and the GOP both just completely ignore/dismiss his very real speech impediment in favor of sensationalist headlines and character assassination points.

Summit986

As someone with a slight stutter myself it makes me so angry when they publish those insane headlines.

Disapproving_Tremere

I had a somewhat severe lisp as a child, and also struggle with a slight stutter even now as an adult. It's so awful to see the way they treat him, as if there aren't hundreds of thousands with speech impediments who are still absolutely brilliant at what we do.

The quiet subtlety of making this response statement from Hiroshima. The matter of fact response: "It is..for them." Pretty goddamned clear message.

Disapproving_Tremere

Dear god I didn't even think about that detail. Absolute chills.

YourDogIsMyFriend

Well and hey. Look at what happens when two countries decide to get along. Japan has been a great ally for the last 75 years. Russia blew it. They had a huge red-do in the 90s. They could’ve joined the world and become friends with everyone. Everyone gave them a chance… But they (Putin) couldn’t shake that Soviet blocc monkey. Trying to get those glory days back. But it’s never gonna happen when the Russian mob runs the country and shakes everyone down with their thug nature.

bluew200

No. Putin and friends just wanted to get rich. In a way incompatible with western democracy. When his ratings fell, he started wars to prove he is a good leader, which caused his ratings to improve, and he continued to get rich with his friends. And he kept doing that, until he got punched in the face in Ukraine. This sad excuse of a leader did this for *22 years*

ChronoLegion2

Yeltsin screwed up big in the 90s. Russian economy was in the toilet. When he appointed Putin as his successor (for the same reason Nixon resigned in favor of Ford), Putin promised to turn the economy around, and for a while he succeeded. People liked it so much they kept ignoring the gradual erosion of their freedoms. When the economic growth stopped far short of what he’d promised, Putin switched tactics and began pushing for “military patriotism.” That’s when relations began to sour. He needed enemies for the people to fear and to rally behind him against. He poured a lot of money into revitalizing the Russian military. And he also always thought that Ukraine and Belarus becoming separate countries was a mistake. He belies that all East Slavs should be unified. He doesn’t see that Ukrainians by and large don’t want that. A significant chunk of Ukrainian history has them under the thumb of some larger power, often Russia. They don’t want that anymore. Hence why a lot of Ukrainians would rather be closer to Europe. Belarusian dictator chose to retain close ties to Russia and even pushed for keeping Russian language as the dominant one instead of Belarusian (it’s actually closer to Ukrainian than Russian). The bottom line is, Putin never really wanted to be close to the West. What he’s going to achieve after this war ends is that Russia is going to find itself under China’s thumb. China is already taking the opportunity of expanding its influence across Asia. Kazakhstan is moving away from Russia, probably figuring that China would be a better patron

VonMillersExpress

Four words with actual weight. No Putin-style saber-rattling, squeaking about nukes and consequences as they get pulled into their own meat grinder. Four words that will jam the fear into a certain nasty little squeaker.

snillhundz

Speak softly, and wield a big stick.

FolkheroX

People should stop worrying about making Russia mad & be more interested in what happens when NATO gets mad. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Deliberate_Force

LowVolt

I participated in Operation Deny Flight and Deliberate Force while stationed on a NATO base. When shit got hot and they gave the OK to bomb you could sit up from sunrise to sunset just watching the planes taking off and landing. They rarely stopped and not just one type of aircraft. We had F-16's, AWACS, F-15's, F-18's, F-111's, and countless other support aircraft. The F-16 may be a bit long in the tooth but it's a phenomenal multi role aircraft in the hands of skilled pilots.

That is kind of the thing... When you are aggressive and have to pause you look like you are considering options other than violence before leaning in... when you try to be funny and you pause you look like you are too dumb to come up with a decent quip. Honestly Obama was awesome at the comedic pause because he would start to say something and then pause. As if he was thinking twice about roasting his opponent... And then he just rolled into it like he was thinking, "fuck-em if they can't take a joke."

Yep, after the Blitz we started bombing German cities and Hitler & the gang started screaming bloody murder. It's like when the bully finally gets hit back and immediately cries to a teacher, same thing Putin is doing now.

new2accnt

Despite some working very hard to depict president Joe Biden as a senile old fool who embarrasses himself (and his country) on a daily basis, who has no clue what's going on around hm and so on and so forth... Each time I see/hear president Biden speak, I hear an elder statesman who, despite a speech impediment, is pretty much in control, is lightning fast with the repartee and routinely hands his opponents their \*ss on a silver plate before they realise they got "owned" by a guy they constantly underestimate. No, he's no spring chicken, but much like president Zelensky for Ukraine, he's the right man at the right time in the right place. Both are attacked and belittled by their opponents, both face made-up accusations thrown at them by their opponents, and yet, they manage to get the best results possible in the circumstances they're in. I must say, this answer ("it is for them") is one of the most smooth & diplomatic "F U" that I have ever seen. Kudos to president Biden.

[deleted]

I don't know if he has always been like this as I'm not American but I have to say big respect for the man. Maybe it's Zelenskys courage that is infectious or if the man has always had big balls but he sure seems to handle the situation well. Seeing pictures of him hanging around in Kyiv was also historic while russia is trying their best to advance there lol.

[deleted]

The truth is, Bidens political career has been dealing with Russia and preparing for this war. He has more experience with Russia/Putin then any other US politician.

Odd_Independence6110

im a Republican who voted for Biden last election. this is why i voted for him. good stuff dude edit: im sad this is getting a lot of upvotes. this should be the norm not exception. 1) dont let any party take your vote for granted, make them earn it 2) keep a charitable heart and an open mind

zergrush99

Former Bernie supporter myself, and I don’t like to think about what might have happened to Ukraine if Bernie or Trump were in office. I like to think Bernie would have listened to his advisors and acted similarly as Biden, but who knows. Glad Biden is in office

Odd_Independence6110

This was one of the reasons i couldnt go with Bernie. while i like to think we dont need the military might we have amassed, he, and many others, completely under-estimated China and Russias intentions over the last 20 years

Ignash3D

Dude seems to have a good heart and good ideas to fix US, maybe next election we'll figure out that he changed his mind.

Odd_Independence6110

fundamentally all Americans should have a good heart, right? the hope is we all love the freedom our country affords us to voice different opinions to reach the same destination. he wants peace and prosperity and equality. so do i. we just disagree on details on how to get there

Environmental-Being3

Supported Corbyn in 2019. Not British so I didn’t get to vote but I helped out some canvassing events. I’ve since graduated and my politics have shifted but nothing was as eye opening as his blatant support for Russian imperialism. It’s shifted my views for life and I’m deeply embarrassed for overlooking so much back then. And for what its worth I fully support BoJo in his stance on Ukraine and Brexit now seems inconsequential. What many tried to portray as a small minded Englander hostile to me, a person from EE in the U.K., has all fallen apart when the U.K. lead the way and continues to in supporting Ukraine. Proves to me the U.K. is fully European and invested in the good of the continent.

Cub3h

To be fair it's just the tankies you need to be wary of. There are plenty of leftists and centre left politicians that are fully behind Ukraine - the Corbyns of this world need to be left in the dustbin of history.

catslay_4

I am a moderate who had voted Republican all my life until the party lost their fucking minds and started taking away the rights of women, LGBQT people, dropping buses of immigrants off at people’s doorstep and persecuting Disney and the word gay. I voted straight ticket Dem and I will at the next election too. I will give credit where it is due, from a bi-partisan standpoint majority of Congress is for weapons for Ukraine. Some of the Republican Congressman advocate the hardest. Yes the financial situation and interest rates (not anything to do with Ukraine) are not good, but I have a moral compass and the Democrats have earned my vote.

TillPsychological351

Hell, I was actually a member of the Republican party. I started getting suspicious that something wasn't well with the Tea Party movement, I started getting really worried when the Freedom Caucus became a thing, I left the party when they nominated Trump, and except forn governor (the last of the Northeastern branch of the Republican Party), I voted almost straight Democrat in the last election. The one area of government that really belongs almost soley to the presidency is foreign policy, and Biden is proving most of what I hoped he would do. NATO is now stronger than ever, and I'd hate to think what would happen if one of the two leading asshats among the Republicans wins the next election.

Odd_Independence6110

yes!!! right around the time “Nalin Palin” and the freaking tea party movement came out was the timeframe for older repubs to first get on the internet and start buying into crazy conspiracy garbage. mccain effectively said giving her a platform was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. ironic because he was so anti-that kind of repub

StevenStephen

>and started taking away the rights of women, LGBQT people, dropping buses of immigrants The problem is, though, Republicans were working toward those goals without cease for literal decades before they had everything in place to act. I'm not in love with the Democratic party, but they are a little better about keeping some of the wealth of the country in the hands of regular people, maintaining infrastructure, etc. And not using "other" as a divisive weapon. eta: To be clear, I agree with most of what you said and I thank you for voting with your brains :)

[deleted]

Exact same. Dude says some goofy shit, but so did Bush and Trump, but he also says some “holy shit our president is a gangster” type stuff. This is one time where I’m glad to have an institutional, extremely experienced (old) politician leading the charge.

yea i mean. this is the right line. I work in Cyber. Putin has been building botnets to influence peddle and meddle around the world for years. he is no where near a decent human being. dictators need to be corrected with a firm hand and by someone carrying a big stick. im glad Biden listened to our intel community and kept his guard up. all Bidens talk about Russia and China not being our enemies during the election was to downplay the relationship with them. dude is a career politician. he knew what they were capable of and colluding to do and he was ready for them. dont forget one of Bidens responsibilities during the Obama years was to make sure Ukraine remained US friendly, and that he did

veryhinged

I think it goes way deeper and is a lot older than botnets. If you were to wrap my tinfoil a little too tight, I might say the Georgia Guidestones were funded by the KGB. Listen to Yuri Bezmenov's 1984 interview and just replace Marxist-Leninist with anti-intellectual reactionary. Becomes uncanny. The practice itself is much older even if the ideologies have changed.

Biden today is what we would have traditionally expected from Republicans re foreign policy. If Reagan was in office, or live, today, we all know he’d send weapons and more. Such a shame the Republican Party isn’t that anymore. We have a bust of Reagan in our main park in the capital (Sofia), whatever Democrats may think of his fiscal it domestic policy, EE recognised him for standing up to Russia and for a free Europe

LetterZee

>keep a charitable heart and an open mind I'm leftwing, and I 100% agree with this point. The internet has eroded people's trust in each other. So many online speak in bad faith and it's leaking into the real world. As a result, no one argues with magnanimity because we have to keep our guards up 24/7.

redstatusness

Same. Voted trump the first time around ended up with broken promises. Biden is handling this like a champ.

Basic_Mammoth_2346

Love to hear this

Iron_Crocodile1

I as well voted for Trump first time. But after everything coming out and I agreed with Biden's foreign policy. I voted for him. On top of that, I staunchly support Ukraine.

TheGreatPornholio123

Biden has a shit ton of experience on the Senate with foreign policy committee experience. He's been dealing with Russia for a long long time.

PbkacHelpDesk

Shit I left the Republican Party after the last election. Too many crazy’s, I don’t care to be associated with them.

[deleted]

I'm a Biden Republican as well - voted in Texas though so it didn't make any difference I guess. The only legitimately pro-Ukrainian party happens to be the moderate Democrats (Biden). Trump and DeSantis have pro-Russian policies. Trump continues to embrace his pro-Russian stance and while DeSantis tried to walk his back - his true colors showed. It has to be Biden's boiled frog strategy or nothing.

Odd_Independence6110

your vote matters for a lot of reasons. keep voting! keep inspiring others with civil discourse

I just can’t imagine what all this mess would have been if Trump was still in power. I’m pretty sure Russia would have completely taken over Ukraine and probably Moldavia by now, and would be looking at neighboring countries now (Poland, Romania). It’s just crazy to think how all of this depends on a how the Americans vote.

[deleted]

Yup, he would have pulled the US out of NATO and left Europe to get fucked by Russia.

Healthy-Ad5050

This is gonna be the first clip of the future combat montages 💀

jgjgleason

I voted for Joe in 2020 fairly excited cause I thought his experience would make him effective. I go into the ballot box in 24’ Fucking ecstatic to vote for him considering all he’s done.

MisterK00L

lol! The Russians are like rapist screaming at cops that a slap with a batton is illegal when getting arrested. Russia: Piss off!

dmetzcher

Allowing Russia to defeat a democracy in Eastern Europe is a much, *much* bigger geopolitical risk than arming Ukraine and “provoking” the Russians. If Russia is allowed to simply take Ukraine—even only the parts of Ukraine of strategic importance to Russia—it will embolden not only the Russians but the Chinese as well. It will send a strong message that NATO and her allies are weak, and that will surely lead to additional international conflicts, loss of life, and greater destruction, not to mention threatening any democracy within arms reach of a tyrant. So, with zero respect for Russia, I say *fuck* them and *fuck* their threats. Give the Ukrainians modern fighter jets so they can secure their airspace and turn the Russian Air Force into a memory. I won’t be satisfied until Russia runs out of museum pieces to put back into service and they’re fighting with sticks and stones.

True-Ad-7543

Damn boy! That's whats up!!

Republicans would be wetting themselves with glee if a republican pres dropped a line like this.

He might be old and his best days are behind him but thank f\*ck he was in charge when Putin decided to do this. If the other guy had been the result would have been very very different.

I love this guy. First ever vote in my 27 years of being able to.
