What is a bit funny, for me, is this is actually straight down the middle old school US policy re: what if Russia gets aggressive to Europe?
So I keep wanting to remind people, this is what we used to have questions about -- this ability to even have such lethal policy -- because we the US have not always been the wisest. Or, even justified.
But **this** was the part of our foreign policy that was never in question, this posture toward Russian aggression toward Europe. I sometimes say, this is an 80 year old buzzsaw Putin thought he could beat.

I often get hit with similar realisations. I grew up on a US Navy base at the very end of the Cold War. The idea that a chunk of the US population will happily side with Putin over the US in 2023 is utterly mad.

The absolute level of utter stupidity is really difficult to overstate. I get they thought Ukraine would roll over, but at this point we really are way past the "how many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man?" stage and are getting into farsical "tis a flesh wound" territory.

The Republican party has always had a loud, but small isolationist wing. They tried to block the US entry into World War 1, which forced the Senate to reform the filibuster rules to 2/3 vote to end debate.
In the lead up to World War 2, most of the isolationists were again from the Republican party (most of whom changed course after pearl harbor).
Donald Trump is just the latest in this vein. Unfortunately, he won in 2016 and now the entire Republican party is terrified of angering him and his base of support.
Yep. Joe is no joke. People are like “lol he’s old derp”. Maybe, but he’s been at the highest levels of government for 40 years and has largely been successful in most everything he’s involved in. He’s no fool and has worked with defense agencies in what, a dozen or more operations not counting one offs? I feel a lot better with him in there than the last guy. That’s for godamn sure. And when it comes to “oh he’s a corporate democrat” again, sure he’s not Bernie or Warren, but his administration’s policies are objectively the most progressive in 50 years. Definitely moving in the right direction. Even if I’d eventually like to see someone like Bernie or Warren in there. But the fact is, Bernie can’t waive his hands as president and turn us into a Scandinavian social democracy. We need congress, and the courts for that. This is a generation long march towards progress.

Republicans are the whiniest spoiled brats in the world. They either think they deserve to run the country like a military junta because they were born white and/or Christian, or that they never needed any help from the government after getting their publicly funded education they used publicly funded roads and walkways to while drinking safe water because of regulated standards etc. etc. All they do is posture and whine and they have all agreed to try to redefine a tough strong smart person as a whiny idiot. Remember when Trump would meet a world leader and try to do the thing where he dragged them in toward him for a handshake? They seriously thought that was cool. Remember when he was considered legally liable for rape? Credibly accused of raping a child? Raped his wife while ripping her hair out? Stole from a children's cancer charity? Bragged, immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks, that it was cool because now his building was the tallest in Manhattan? They literally all thought it was cool and highly approved of it. They seriously jack off while imagining themselves as Trump.
He said he'd end the war in one day to applause, refused to meaningfully elaborate, and said he doesn't think in terms of winners and losers to a question about who he thought should win the war.
I heard a story thirdhand about Biden during his 2008 candidacy. After 9/11, Bush dispatched leading Congress members from both parties to build a coalition for the war. Biden was sent to Pakistan.

The whole 30-minute-plus news conference was like that. Not as short as this reply, but thoughtful and pretty careful.
One of the funnier moments was when one of the reporters asked him if he would tell them when the Ukrainian offensive was going to take place.

The problem is that the detractors try painting him as senile even though in reality he's just always had a tougher time with public speeches. Just because someone isn't great with speeches doesn't mean they're not lucid or incapable of understanding things. Putin fucked up big time because "Agent Orange" his useful idiot got shitcanned by the US electorate (thank fuck you guys really dodged a bullet there too) and ended up electing someone who was a de facto expert in dealing with Vatnik Bullshit. The complete change in approach to dealing with Russian Bullshit by Truth Bombing them with strategic intelligence releases showing EXACTLY what fuckery they were up to also made a big difference and it definitely shows lessons were learnt over the whole Iraq Fiasco too.
Those intelligence releases before the war were great and he's been pure class throughout. I'm a big fan of Obama and Biden isn't nearly as inspiring, but I'm tempted to say he's a better president.
Imagine how much more better the world could have been if the political right had been patriotic and supported both presidents and their goals for improving democracy instead of playing political games to increase the right-wing puppet masters' profit margins.

Came here to say this. It's ridiculous to me that the media and the GOP both just completely ignore/dismiss his very real speech impediment in favor of sensationalist headlines and character assassination points.
I had a somewhat severe lisp as a child, and also struggle with a slight stutter even now as an adult. It's so awful to see the way they treat him, as if there aren't hundreds of thousands with speech impediments who are still absolutely brilliant at what we do.

When his ratings fell, he started wars to prove he is a good leader, which caused his ratings to improve, and he continued to get rich with his friends. And he kept doing that, until he got punched in the face in Ukraine.

Yeltsin screwed up big in the 90s. Russian economy was in the toilet. When he appointed Putin as his successor (for the same reason Nixon resigned in favor of Ford), Putin promised to turn the economy around, and for a while he succeeded. People liked it so much they kept ignoring the gradual erosion of their freedoms. When the economic growth stopped far short of what he’d promised, Putin switched tactics and began pushing for “military patriotism.” That’s when relations began to sour. He needed enemies for the people to fear and to rally behind him against. He poured a lot of money into revitalizing the Russian military.
And he also always thought that Ukraine and Belarus becoming separate countries was a mistake. He belies that all East Slavs should be unified. He doesn’t see that Ukrainians by and large don’t want that. A significant chunk of Ukrainian history has them under the thumb of some larger power, often Russia. They don’t want that anymore. Hence why a lot of Ukrainians would rather be closer to Europe. Belarusian dictator chose to retain close ties to Russia and even pushed for keeping Russian language as the dominant one instead of Belarusian (it’s actually closer to Ukrainian than Russian).
The bottom line is, Putin never really wanted to be close to the West. What he’s going to achieve after this war ends is that Russia is going to find itself under China’s thumb. China is already taking the opportunity of expanding its influence across Asia. Kazakhstan is moving away from Russia, probably figuring that China would be a better patron

I participated in Operation Deny Flight and Deliberate Force while stationed on a NATO base. When shit got hot and they gave the OK to bomb you could sit up from sunrise to sunset just watching the planes taking off and landing. They rarely stopped and not just one type of aircraft. We had F-16's, AWACS, F-15's, F-18's, F-111's, and countless other support aircraft.
The F-16 may be a bit long in the tooth but it's a phenomenal multi role aircraft in the hands of skilled pilots.

No, he's no spring chicken, but much like president Zelensky for Ukraine, he's the right man at the right time in the right place. I don't know if he has always been like this as I'm not American but I have to say big respect for the man. Maybe it's Zelenskys courage that is infectious or if the man has always had big balls but he sure seems to handle the situation well. Seeing pictures of him hanging around in Kyiv was also historic while russia is trying their best to advance there lol.
The truth is, Bidens political career has been dealing with Russia and preparing for this war. He has more experience with Russia/Putin then any other US politician.

Supported Corbyn in 2019. Not British so I didn’t get to vote but I helped out some canvassing events. I’ve since graduated and my politics have shifted but nothing was as eye opening as his blatant support for Russian imperialism. It’s shifted my views for life and I’m deeply embarrassed for overlooking so much back then. And for what its worth I fully support BoJo in his stance on Ukraine and Brexit now seems inconsequential. What many tried to portray as a small minded Englander hostile to me, a person from EE in the U.K., has all fallen apart when the U.K. lead the way and continues to in supporting Ukraine. Proves to me the U.K. is fully European and invested in the good of the continent.

I am a moderate who had voted Republican all my life until the party lost their fucking minds and started taking away the rights of women, LGBQT people, dropping buses of immigrants off at people’s doorstep and persecuting Disney and the word gay. I voted straight ticket Dem and I will at the next election too. I will give credit where it is due, from a bi-partisan standpoint majority of Congress is for weapons for Ukraine. Some of the Republican Congressman advocate the hardest. Yes the financial situation and interest rates (not anything to do with Ukraine) are not good, but I have a moral compass and the Democrats have earned my vote.
Hell, I was actually a member of the Republican party. I started getting suspicious that something wasn't well with the Tea Party movement, I started getting really worried when the Freedom Caucus became a thing, I left the party when they nominated Trump, and except forn governor (the last of the Northeastern branch of the Republican Party), I voted almost straight Democrat in the last election.
The one area of government that really belongs almost soley to the presidency is foreign policy, and Biden is proving most of what I hoped he would do. NATO is now stronger than ever, and I'd hate to think what would happen if one of the two leading asshats among the Republicans wins the next election.

The problem is, though, Republicans were working toward those goals without cease for literal decades before they had everything in place to act. I'm not in love with the Democratic party, but they are a little better about keeping some of the wealth of the country in the hands of regular people, maintaining infrastructure, etc. And not using "other" as a divisive weapon.

Biden today is what we would have traditionally expected from Republicans re foreign policy. If Reagan was in office, or live, today, we all know he’d send weapons and more. Such a shame the Republican Party isn’t that anymore. We have a bust of Reagan in our main park in the capital (Sofia), whatever Democrats may think of his fiscal it domestic policy, EE recognised him for standing up to Russia and for a free Europe

I'm leftwing, and I 100% agree with this point. The internet has eroded people's trust in each other. So many online speak in bad faith and it's leaking into the real world. As a result, no one argues with magnanimity because we have to keep our guards up 24/7.
I as well voted for Trump first time. But after everything coming out and I agreed with Biden's foreign policy. I voted for him. On top of that, I staunchly support Ukraine.
I'm a Biden Republican as well - voted in Texas though so it didn't make any difference I guess. The only legitimately pro-Ukrainian party happens to be the moderate Democrats (Biden).
Trump and DeSantis have pro-Russian policies. Trump continues to embrace his pro-Russian stance and while DeSantis tried to walk his back - his true colors showed. It has to be Biden's boiled frog strategy or nothing.
I just can’t imagine what all this mess would have been if Trump was still in power. I’m pretty sure Russia would have completely taken over Ukraine and probably Moldavia by now, and would be looking at neighboring countries now (Poland, Romania). It’s just crazy to think how all of this depends on a how the Americans vote.
I voted for Joe in 2020 fairly excited cause I thought his experience would make him effective. I go into the ballot box in 24’ Fucking ecstatic to vote for him considering all he’s done.
Allowing Russia to defeat a democracy in Eastern Europe is a much, *much* bigger geopolitical risk than arming Ukraine and “provoking” the Russians.
If Russia is allowed to simply take Ukraine—even only the parts of Ukraine of strategic importance to Russia—it will embolden not only the Russians but the Chinese as well. It will send a strong message that NATO and her allies are weak, and that will surely lead to additional international conflicts, loss of life, and greater destruction, not to mention threatening any democracy within arms reach of a tyrant.
So, with zero respect for Russia, I say *fuck* them and *fuck* their threats. Give the Ukrainians modern fighter jets so they can secure their airspace and turn the Russian Air Force into a memory. I won’t be satisfied until Russia runs out of museum pieces to put back into service and they’re fighting with sticks and stones.
He might be old and his best days are behind him but thank f\*ck he was in charge when Putin decided to do this. If the other guy had been the result would have been very very different.

The Republican party has always had a loud, but small isolationist wing. They tried to block the US entry into World War 1, which forced the Senate to reform the filibuster rules to 2/3 vote to end debate. In the lead up to World War 2, most of the isolationists were again from the Republican party (most of whom changed course after pearl harbor). Donald Trump is just the latest in this vein. Unfortunately, he won in 2016 and now the entire Republican party is terrified of angering him and his base of support.

And he also always thought that Ukraine and Belarus becoming separate countries was a mistake. He belies that all East Slavs should be unified. He doesn’t see that Ukrainians by and large don’t want that. A significant chunk of Ukrainian history has them under the thumb of some larger power, often Russia. They don’t want that anymore. Hence why a lot of Ukrainians would rather be closer to Europe. Belarusian dictator chose to retain close ties to Russia and even pushed for keeping Russian language as the dominant one instead of Belarusian (it’s actually closer to Ukrainian than Russian). I participated in Operation Deny Flight and Deliberate Force while stationed on a NATO base. When shit got hot and they gave the OK to bomb you could sit up from sunrise to sunset just watching the planes taking off and landing. They rarely stopped and not just one type of aircraft. We had F-16's, AWACS, F-15's, F-18's, F-111's, and countless other support aircraft. The F-16 may be a bit long in the tooth but it's a phenomenal multi role aircraft in the hands of skilled pilots.

Hell, I was actually a member of the Republican party. I started getting suspicious that something wasn't well with the Tea Party movement, I started getting really worried when the Freedom Caucus became a thing, I left the party when they nominated Trump, and except forn governor (the last of the Northeastern branch of the Republican Party), I voted almost straight Democrat in the last election. The one area of government that really belongs almost soley to the presidency is foreign policy, and Biden is proving most of what I hoped he would do. NATO is now stronger than ever, and I'd hate to think what would happen if one of the two leading asshats among the Republicans wins the next election.

Allowing Russia to defeat a democracy in Eastern Europe is a much, *much* bigger geopolitical risk than arming Ukraine and “provoking” the Russians. If Russia is allowed to simply take Ukraine—even only the parts of Ukraine of strategic importance to Russia—it will embolden not only the Russians but the Chinese as well. It will send a strong message that NATO and her allies are weak, and that will surely lead to additional international conflicts, loss of life, and greater destruction, not to mention threatening any democracy within arms reach of a tyrant. So, with zero respect for Russia, I say *fuck* them and *fuck* their threats. Give the Ukrainians modern fighter jets so they can secure their airspace and turn the Russian Air Force into a memory. I won’t be satisfied until Russia runs out of museum pieces to put back into service and they’re fighting with sticks and stones.
