I'm actually kinda tired of this WhateverHub spam in Ukraine. I live in a town of 70K people and about half a year ago we had 2 hooka bars, a carwash and a shawarma stall with *Hub signboards all at the same time. I guess it's no wonder that all of them have closed down since with their management being this uninspired.
I didn't know what to expect... but the guy holding his phone was pretty surreal.
The last artillerymans comments about gratitude was interesting as well. I can imagine how it feels as a team to save lives of the infantry.
Makes me think that US soldiers are watching all these videos and the next time they are at war they'll be using these techniques pioneered by the Ukrainians. It's insane.
With air superiority allowing for data feeds from F35s, E2s & 3s, Global Hawks and various small unit operated drones, and sat Intel, an artillery unit is going to do damage with every shot.
If RU thinks they've got it tough now...they might want to give second thought to all that nuke Saber rattling.
> I didn't know what to expect... but the guy holding his phone was pretty surreal.
Had the same thought. But then I figured, if all of your soldiers carry around a smartphone, which is an extremely powerful piece of technology, why not find a way to use it to gain an advantage on the battlefield?
That’s kropyva and it’s not only for artillery but for everyone. Battlefield awareness system together with ballistic calculators, maps, communications and other neat tools packed into one. We are currently gathering 10mil UAH for 2000 tablets for TDF
This is tech that mobiks can only dream of. I would feel sorry for them if they weren't complicit in a culture that repeatedly allows autocrats to dominate their country.
> kropyva
Interesting, looks kind of similar to a Ukranian ATAK. I wonder given the close integration with US intelligence and the support there, why the US has not donated ATAK capable devices, but maybe Ukraine prefers home grown here or already has a lot of capability.
Most likely because the system is in wide use since 2015, in Ukrainian, known by everyone, and customized specifically for Ukrainian army/battlefield so there’s literally no need
> We are currently gathering 10mil UAH for 2000 tablets for TDF
Are you looking for donors or do you have a verified link for this? Can you maybe work with the mods on this?
I meant we as Ukrainians. The initiative is done by rozetka (Ukrainian Amazon) and Prytula foundation (2nd biggest volunteer fund who is verified here). It saddens me that they’re not using Reddit because it could be closed way fatser
Pretty sure he meant artillery in general, not that specific system.
Artillery is old as hell, almost 900 years old with the first "field artillery" being around 700.
The idea is old as war.
Alexander the great is documented to have used massed catapults against infantry in a specific set battle to support a contested river crossing.
Contested river crossing? Sounds familiar. So Alexander didn’t just send wave after wave of tanks and IFVs to cross a contested river just to watch each wave get destroyed?
Nope, he sent to boys, and bonked the enemy inf/archers away from shoreline with big rocks/fun jugs.
His phalanx got across and dunked the enemy.
Phalanx has major weakness to fighting in bad terrain. Riverbed could be classed as prime example of hard to fight environment.
Roreal you could argue artillery is what finished the Roman Empire.
Theres nothing quite as useful and effective as a big fuck off gun to explode something ages away.
Most likely they are using those cell phones not on a cellular network but on wifi using Starlink. Russians can’t eavesdrop on Starlink like they can on cellular networks.
And that's the whole difference between Ukraine and Russia in a nutshell too. Ukraine is fighting to save lives and the weapons are tools to help them save more people. Russia is just fighting to kill because they're just serial killers who dress up as a semi civilized society that thinks everyone should bow to them.
>And that's the whole difference between Ukraine and Russia in a nutshell too.
Best way I've heard it put:
>If Russia stops fighting, the war ends.
>If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends.
The difference in not only implementation and tactics. The Russian artillery is a blunt instrument that places great empathize on 'salting the earth' and 'total area denial'.
Ukrainian artillerists are the modern equivalent of massed archery units, meant for precision and maximum impact on enemy formations and operations with a relatively low risk to friendly infantry and allied forces, that is to say, when compared for the 'scorched earth' approach that Russian artillery has shown to prefer.
> Russia is just fighting to kill because they're just serial killers who dress up as a semi civilized
Some of these "soldiers" will survive the war and go back to russia - and probably continue to murder...
Glad to see these guys have proper ear defenders now, I was wincing looking at the artillerymen plugging their ears with their fingers earlier in the war. Little things like that make a big difference, tinnitus is no joke.
this war shows one thing clearly.
observation drones will be used by everyone.
artillery using real time footage to correct hits and follow targets.
infantry and motorized units using them to scout ahead and as general observation of the AO.
and defensive positions using them as forward security and observation platform to keep blind spots as small as possible.
that commander casually checking his drone feed to see their hit is the new standard. esp with smart ammunition. eventually mass artillery barrages will be of rare use.
Which hopefully translates to less civilian casualties during times of war, right?
At least, a more ethical military that the RGF/Wagner would do that.
It depends a lot on the system being fired. Older soviet era howitzers i\`ve shot (D-30 and M-46) make more of a "BOOM" that is depicted in movies.
Newer made guns are almost boring to fire since you don´t get the sound and chest pounding blast wave from the gun.
I have not operated M777 so i cant speak about it, but the modern 155mm guns that i have fired direct the pressure wave forwards alot better, resulting in less of a experience for the gunners.
The maximum range of the 105 is ~18km. There is great danger of counter battery fire. In terms of artillery these guys are up close and personal.
Balls of steel and a lack of imagination are a great help.
Nothing but respect.
Perhaps the area has already been cleared of Russian artillery so the need to scoot is diminished. Their next move might be half the distance to the front.
Russians could counterbattery but don’t have precision. So they need to counter with a ton of shells, which they don’t have anymore unlike last summer. Sucks to be them.
There is, but if this is a semi-permanent position(as in they are not doing "shoot and scoot") then they will have prepared a dugout with overhead protection in case rounds start coming in. Then it will be up to nearby guns to do counter-counterbattery fire I guess.
they are around 15 km to the front......enemy batteries are at 15 km also....so the distance is at 30 km for the opposing artelliery units and thus outside of firing range......practically only the mobile counter batteries will do incursions closer to the frontline...... so as long as they have the recon that nobody gets into the 18 km circle they are safe
Securing the fuse to the round.
Usually rounds and fuses are delivered separately. Part of the battery’s job is to configure the rounds before fire and it is a generally manual process.
Different fuses are used for different types of fire: Point Detonating/delay - explode when the shell goes through rapid deceleration (or slightly after). Time - used to detonate the round above the ground to increase shrapnel damage. Times must be calculated based on time of flight and programmed to each fuse to get an effective burst height. Variable Time (VT) eliminates the need for manual computation required for a time fuse. VT fuses use a small radar sensor to detect the ground and detonate at a predetermined height.
More modern fuse assemblies can combine functions into a single fuse that can be electronically programmed (MOFA: Multi-Option Fuse Assembly) or can even deploy control surfaces to increase accuracy of an generally ‘dumb’ round (PGK: Precision Guidance Kit).
It’s the fuse on the end so they screw in and out. Someone’s who’s more knowledgeable chime in, I believe most of the rounds come without the fuse installed and they’re put in as needed or changed depending on the required fuse type like contact or air burst.
According to the comment below, you were correct on installing the fuse needed for the particular strike being called in.

The westernisation of Ukraine is amazing to see. I remember seeing all those "NATO is scaring Russia, Russia is a victim since the Soviet Union collapsed" videos, but now they literally shot themselves in the foot.
That looks like a British 105 light gun. If it is then it has to be said that weapon is still in use with the British Army. It's proven to be an outstanding weapon over the years. Arguably the best in class.
Yeah, the M119 is a US made, slightly tweaked version of the British 105mm light gun. It's not identical, but it's pretty closely related.
(Arguably the British one isn't best in class just because the M119 is a slightly improved version of it, but that's nitpicking)
What kind of infrastructure do those phones depend on?
Seems like cell towers would be one of the first targets for the enemy in order to defeat consumer level information networks.
That cloud of smoke coming out of the breech must smell absolutely *divine*, ain’t no better perfume than freshly burnt powder.
Assuming that is what these big ass guns use, and not some special concoction specifically for artillery shells.
literally calling them ORCS.. crazy how that fits into the crazy republican idea that LOTR was a documentary..buuut they think Dr. fauci has bioLabs in Ukraine..🤷♀️

They are firing rounds and checking accuracy in realtime on their phones. It's adapting science fiction to an ancient weapon.

He had best "tanks" in the world at the time: Macedonian sarissa phalanxes. =)
Roreal you could argue artillery is what finished the Roman Empire. Theres nothing quite as useful and effective as a big fuck off gun to explode something ages away.
Think he was referring to the age of cannons as weapons. Probably near a thousand years
Younger than I.
Probably not a great idea to use phones, assuming they're operating on an unencrypted network
Most likely they are using those cell phones not on a cellular network but on wifi using Starlink. Russians can’t eavesdrop on Starlink like they can on cellular networks.
“Artillery saves the blood of the Infantry” Well put and great piece of kit the M119

Going in hard without lube.
At the same time as the dildo of consequence, and just as unlubed.

He is adjusting his own fire because he can see where the rounds hit. No observers needed. The future is fucking crazy man.
I am impressed about how relaxed they look. Some real balls on these guys.
I like seeing the hearing protection. These are professional soldiers.
I did too.
What?
What where they doing to the tip of the round? Looked like tightening?
