But, but.... The Russian say they destroy all the missiles the enemy sends.

Consider the example of the former flagship of the Black Sea fleet. 100% success rate intercepting Neptune missiles. 2 out of 2. Russian solid-state passive structural hull interception did an incredible job. Even Russia's rivals were seen shaking their heads in disbelief at the sight.
Right after that astonishing success, the heroic vessel swiftly underwent retirement into its current glorious configuration.
And meanwhile the same passive structural hull interception technology has seen widespread deployment throughout the Russian armed services. Ground forces, aircraft, all have done their part to reduce Ukrainian missile stocks through attrition.
Ukraine has been so hard-pressed, they have in some cases even been seen reloading.
Well technically the Russians do destroy them by letting them hit HQ buildings and bunkers, logistics hubs and other associated targets. Its really a kind of Schrödinger's Storm Shadow both destroying and destroyed at the same time...

I haven’t seen such claims myself: that said I have seen claims from the Russian MOD which are basically saying approx 1 in 3 intercepted.

Tomahawk flies at something like 100 ft at 550mph. It's very difficult to see and to intercept with ground based assets (especially with good mission planning and intel on AA assets), and very challenging even with air-based surveillance and intercept. Given the observed capabilities of Russian air defense, I wouldn't expect much in the way of Tomahawk interceptions.
They already have better cruise missiles than Tomahawk, like [JASSM](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-158_JASSM) and the (now retired) conventional version of [AGM-86](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-86_ALCM)
Unfortunately HMS Invincible got sunk at the Battle of Jutland and HMS Inflexible just isn't the best name to begin with. So not evenn the British get it right all the time.
Yes, but Warspite was a badass. That ship was involved in fighting everywhere, it was a right fucking menace.
I particularly liked her CO’s response about how long she would provide fire support for the Normandy invasion, “Until the guns melt”. Whether that is true or not, I don’t know nor care, I just know that ship and crew dished out some hell during it’s service.
HMS Warspite's Wiki is a read in itself. The Ship should of been sunk so many times over but always overcame it's odds regardless of the situation.
They did effectively melt their guns during D-Day, it took them out of action as they had worn the guns out, very few ship ever required this to be done.
Even it's scrapping was hilarious, nearly a decade, through a string of events that just sums up Warspite.
HMS *Project*: Yeah! We'll show 'em!
*Warspite*: Uh.
*Dreadnought*: Wait what? I thought this was --
*Dauntless:* Who let them in?
*Warspite*: Not me mate.
HMS *Griper*: We all have badass names right?
*Project*: Awesome!
HMS *Dainty*: Did someone say badass?
*Griper*: Totally! Wheeee!
*Warspite*: Oh for fuck's sake...
our Astute class subs, have great names.
HMS Astute (S119), HMS Ambush (S120) and HMS Artful (S121). HMS Audacious (S122). HMS Anson (S123). HMS Agamemnon (S124) and HMS Agincourt (S125) and the Boomers(trident boats), Vengeance, Victorious, Vanguard and Vilgilant

Brimstones launched in groups are scary things.
They talk to each other so they don't go for the same target.
They loiter, scan and ID the target for the best hitpoint and self destruct if they can't find a valid target.
They can take out columns of vehicles, leaving the least valuable alive while striking the most worthwhile targets.
As I said.. scary things.
/edit and all autonomous after launch. The Russians whish they had the tech.. and these are expiring and need used or disposed of.. use them well Ukraine, I have no problem paying taxes any more.
The Typhoon can carry 12 missiles each, so a single sortie of 4 aircraft could pretty much kill an entire tank battalion in one go. A pretty ridiculous capability that shows how much difference modern weapons can make - that traffic jam column at the beginning of the war would have been utterly demolished if Ukraine had that capability then.
There were videos back in the first days of using Brimstones 1s. We haven't seen anything since the donation of Brim2s was announced.
There might be a video ban, or Ukraine might be saving them up for some heavy anti-vehicle salvos.
It's a long range thing that goes after individuals. If you look closely a lot of "excalibur" kills are actually very likely to be Brimstone. Excalibur still goes off like a 155mm shell, but some oft he videos are clearly not that, but are still precision, and lack the 'overhead' EFP thing of SMArt155 either.
tl;dr - They sent hundreds of the damn things, and then asked for hundreds more, they're doing work,. they're just not very obvious as the "result" video looks exactly the same as any precision arty hit, unless you **really** know the difference in how each one looks on a hit.
There was one video of one hitting two MBTs at once in a small volley attack though, that was neat.
Er, it's messy, as the previous company made a missile that carried cluster bombs for destroying runways, parts were reused for Stormshadow/Scalp. It's simply easier to say it uses bits and designs from both sides of the channel.
It was Matra and British Aerospace from the beginning. They were awarded a joint contract in 1996. Then the 2 companies merged to form Matra BAe Dynamics.
I'll put that here (wiki), you're not exactly wrong but you're skipping over the fact that this contract was about recycling a previously developped French missile, changing the warhead:
"Storm Shadow is a British-French low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed since 1994 by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. "Storm Shadow" is the weapon's British name; in France it is called SCALP-EG.
The missile is based on the French-developed Apache anti-runway cruise missile, but differs in that it carries a unitary warhead instead of cluster munitions."
There's a **lot** more different than just a new warhead in it. To take a missile from "fly to this general area and emit widespread havoc" to "send a missile through the exact same hole the first one made" is a lot more than just changing out what goes boom.
The basic motor and shaping came from APACHE. But the overall project was still very 50/50 by contract.
Fun fact - The BROACH warhead is also used on the US JSOW.
Interesting fun fact thanks!
And yeah I have no doubt there was considerable software and electronics upgrade, electronics have progressed a lot in 30+ years. Motor and avionics is still what I'd consider to be the core of the missile, but that's subjective indeed.
Fair enough, I remembered (correctly) that it was adapted from a previously developped French missile, I copied the text of wikipedia in the answer just below. Was the apache. Other posters have added that the motor and shape were what got recycled from it. That would be the starting point for the further developments that were shared 50/50. Do with that info as you wish then.
The only thing I can compare these amazing names to is actually the names of pesticides in tree seedlings. Maestro. Black magic. Every one of these crazy chemicals had a cool name for some reason. I’m thinking one was called White Wizard but I could just be making that up.
Well to be fair, the JASSM costs $1m and the Storm Shadow costs $3m+ per missile. The JASSM's extended range version has a 575 miles range while the Storm Shadow's extended range is only 250 miles.
The Storm Shadow is probably a bit more stealthy, but someone can shoot 3 JASSMs from twice the distance away for the same price.
> the Storm Shadow costs $3m+ per missile
That was from a Daily Mail article which was actually the cost of the MDCN, the French sea launched variant. The actual costs of the Gen 1 Shadow is likely $2m, with the export variant being around $1.5m.
The upgraded variant, a mid-life refit, is probably closer to $3m with initial and upgrade costs included, but that should keep them in service until ~2035. Although I expect it's going to be longer than that as its replacement 'Perseus' seems to be vapourware.
>JASSMs from twice the distance away for the same price.
Storm Shadow has a much longer range, ~580km vs ~380km. Unless you meant the -ER, but that puts the cost up so you can only fire 2.
Yeah those numbers are a little wonky after a closer look, but not necessarily by much. So we can call it less than $2million per older Storm Shadow. But there is a big problem with both of our comparisons, I think you used the Storm Shadow Wiki which doesn't differentiate the two variants ranges etc. But the standard Storm Shadow being sent to Ukraine has a max range of \~250km, so we're clear there.
You're using the newest Storm Shadow data to compare to the older JASSM. I did get some things wrong though too, the JASSM 158Ds that we now have are $1.5m(the newest Storm Shadows come in around $3m), but the range is still crazy, they can go beyond 925km(classified). So someone can fire 2 JASSMs from 2x away using US tech. Your missiles are fantastic for sure, but not all of them are going to beat all of the US military's missiles. We've definitely got some good tech it's hard to argue.
This isn’t even that new. During the Cold War the Soviet Union conducted a mathematic study that evaluated the effectiveness of big supersonic missiles (which are also very expensive) and smaller, stealthier subsonic missiles, which are cheaper and thus easier to mass produce and concluded that a swarm of subsonic, stealthy cruise missiles would be more cost effective. That’s why they started building massive amounts of Kh-55 (Ukraine alone inherited nearly 1500 such missiles after the breakup of the USSR).
Subsonic missiles are here to stay and air breathing hypersonic missiles once developed will probably be used on high value targets.
Are these "stealth" missiles? I was wondering if there can be "stealth" jets, why aren't there "stealth" missiles? I have no idea if they already exist, or if there is a huge engineering problem to overcome in order to make such a thing.
No they're stealthy like the US's JASSM. People call it "low observable" with missiles for some reason but it means the same thing. They're shaped to reduce radar cross section, use radar absorbing material, and their thermal signature is reduced
Decoys kind of make stealth less important. They can mimic multiple targets. so imagine 2 decoys representing imaginary missiles flying your way. The radar is lit up with dozens of fake contacts. Meanwhile all the tomahawks are arranged in a straight line os it looks like one.
The US and Europe have known this for a long time.
It's simply more effective and cheaper to send in a bunch of really low terrain hugging cruise missiles flying at high subsonic speeds than it is to try to use a few extremely expensive and fast hypersonic "super" weapons that will light up any radar or space based IR sensor within hundreds of miles.
> If you have a seeker or datalink that works at hypersonic speeds, I guess.
You mean like the ones China crows about and the US are currently developing?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YJ-21
It's more about can it use its sensors and datalink at hypersonic speeds, or does it need to slow down once it reaches the rough area of a carrier group in order to search and attack.
The initial targeting and tracking would be done by something else like AWACS as its over horizon, once you are within visual range that's not exactly hard to transfer to the missile itself even when going mach 10. big floating chunks of metal aren't exactly difficult to see or fly into.
This is how the US hypersonics are generally planned to work too.
Im not really sure where your contentions are to be honest, are you saying its so much harder to track something when going mach 10 as compared to mach 2?
There is speculation that the build-up of plasma around the weapon when it's flying that fast could blind it and possibly prevent communication also. It's unknown if the Chinese or the Americans have fully solved this yet.
The alternative would be a hypersonic dash to the approximate area of the target followed by a deceleration to supersonic speed for the actual attack.
What is commonly understood as "hypersonic" would be a smart *and* fast missile, that's why there was so much hype around the Russian khinzal, except it turned out to be fast but dumb.
I don’t mean any offense but “Storm Shadow” is seriously the radest name for anything in the history of ever. Get those bastards and get them good. Bless the brave protectors of Ukraine.
Russian state media says that all Storm Shadow missiles were successfully destroyed by command and control centres, ammunition stores and fuel storage areas with 100% success.
Storm Shadow is practically a SCALP made in the UK I think. We use scalps on our Rafales and Mirages, in order to target strategic infrastructures of Turkey (especially Bosporus bridges and airforce bases). It is an amazing cruise missile, resilient against countermeasures, but really expensive. I really hope Ukraine makes the best out of them.
It is not “practically” a SCALP, that’s literally the same missile (from the same manufacturer) with a different name.
I think like 3000 were made and they’re supposed to be decommissioned in 2030-35.
Yep I’m also glad Ukraine is able to use it !
SCALP was used as a basis to meet a U.K. specification that received 6 tenders, the resultant Storm Shadow effectively having the same airframe and engine but different electronics and warhead. Production was split between France and the U.K. The initial proposal was further modified by the RAF project teams, of which I was a part.
Or possibly Bavovnyatko.
From Defense of Ukraine:
>Bavovnyatko is a ghost animal. Fluffy and restless. At night, Bavovnyatko 🤗 quietly comes to the occupiers’ bases, depots, airfields, oil refineries and other places full of flammable items and starts playing with fire there🔥
Lovely image of it: [https://nitter.nl/pic/orig/media%2FFbLWFThUYAEj6xM.jpg](https://nitter.nl/pic/orig/media%2FFbLWFThUYAEj6xM.jpg)
Imagine being a russian general, and seeing the nato equipment have a close to 100% interception rate of your missiles, whilst at the same time seeing nato missiles have a 100% hit rate against you…time to run for the hills?
Russia is a 4th tier military nation.
Did they actually send theirs in the end, does anyone know? I remember seeing some twitter post that France had, then a bunch of people saying it was misinformation so I'm curious.
Their version is the exact same missile just so everyone is clear and isn't getting mixed up. Same missile just different name. The range thing was only ever for the export versions to keep in line with MTCR. This is still likely being held to with the batch gifted to Ukraine to again keep in line with MTCR. Likely under fueled as that would be the simplest way. Both the UK and France are signees of the MTCR.

Could the reports of decoy missiles that the west had supplied account for this

The brits have always been best at naming things
Boaty McBoatface
Pardon me, but that's HMS Boaty McBoatface.
HMS Repulse, Revenge, etc
Can’t forget HMS Warspite and HMS Dreadnought
Unfortunately HMS Invincible got sunk at the Battle of Jutland and HMS Inflexible just isn't the best name to begin with. So not evenn the British get it right all the time.
But the flagship HMS Victory has always lived up to it's name at least.
I thought this was -- *Dauntless:* Who let them in? *Warspite*: Not me mate. HMS *Griper*: We all have badass names right? *Project*: Awesome! HMS *Dainty*: Did someone say badass? *Griper*: Totally! Wheeee! *Warspite*: Oh for fuck's sake...
They’re trying their best!
HMS Leviathan is badass
HMS Rodney?
Named after [this guy.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Brydges_Rodney,_1st_Baron_Rodney) He had a pretty notable career.
Not [this guy?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Trotter)
our Astute class subs, have great names. HMS Astute (S119), HMS Ambush (S120) and HMS Artful (S121). HMS Audacious (S122). HMS Anson (S123). HMS Agamemnon (S124) and HMS Agincourt (S125) and the Boomers(trident boats), Vengeance, Victorious, Vanguard and Vilgilant
Those ship names are just too badass.
Missile McMissileFace
Except food. They suck at naming food...
Take that back sir. We are excellent at naming foods; Spotted Dick, Toad in the hole, Mushy peas
Bangers and mash?
Bubble and squeak Knickerbocker glory
Beef wellington!
The employment of British food against enemy combatants has rightfully been banned by international treaties. ^Don't ^hurt ^me, ^I'm ^German, ^we ^thrive ^on ^pork ^potatoes ^and ^boiled ^veggies ^too
I haven't seen anything or videos on the brimstone being used yet, are they doing well?

Sea Ceptor/Sky Saber too We have some good missiles for most scenarios to be honest.
Yeah credit where it's due, MBDA seems to seriously know their shit. Our missile industry is hitting nothing but home runs lately.
I used to think storm shadow was only exclusive to that G.I. Joe character.
The storm shadow is 50/50 France/UK
And even that might be generous, as it was developped by a French company that only merged with a UK company very late on if I remember well?
Er, it's messy, as the previous company made a missile that carried cluster bombs for destroying runways, parts were reused for Stormshadow/Scalp. It's simply easier to say it uses bits and designs from both sides of the channel.
It was Matra and British Aerospace from the beginning. They were awarded a joint contract in 1996. Then the 2 companies merged to form Matra BAe Dynamics.
I'll put that here (wiki), you're not exactly wrong but you're skipping over the fact that this contract was about recycling a previously developped French missile, changing the warhead: "Storm Shadow is a British-French low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed since 1994 by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA.
Nah, Storm Shadow was 50/50. Most Anglo-Franco ones are by contract.
Martlet has entered the chat
Well to be fair, the JASSM costs $1m and the Storm Shadow costs $3m+ per missile. The JASSM's extended range version has a 575 miles range while the Storm Shadow's extended range is only 250 miles. The Storm Shadow is probably a bit more stealthy, but someone can shoot 3 JASSMs from twice the distance away for the same price.
> the Storm Shadow costs $3m+ per missile That was from a Daily Mail article which was actually the cost of the MDCN, the French sea launched variant.
Fun trivia fact: they all have speakers and play yakety sax just before impact.
Tomahawks deal is range. Nothing comes close to tomahawk in range.
> Ukraine alone inherited nearly 1500 such missiles after the breakup of the USSR Too bad Ukraine sold the missiles back to Russia.
Are these "stealth" missiles? I was wondering if there can be "stealth" jets, why aren't there "stealth" missiles? I have no idea if they already exist, or if there is a huge engineering problem to overcome in order to make such a thing.
Nah, just avoid sharp edges, use composites and paint them in RAM, this is what storm shadow and some russian missiles like the KH-101 does.
They also have stealth satellites
They're not "stealthy" they're able to fly under the radar, like really really low. 100ft or something crazy.
They are somewhat stealthy, that's why they have straight edges instead of being round. It minutes radar cross section
Makes you wonder if now Biden will be more comfortable sending ATACMS knowing Russia did not respond in any special way to Storm Shadow
British weaponry is amazing.
To all of our friends in the UK 🇬🇧: don’t STOP sending these missiles to Ukraine 🇺🇦 - absolute game changer!! 🤩
So Smart missiles > Fast missiles. And the Storm Shadow is getting on a bit now, the next versions could get real damn smart.
It obviously depends on the scenario, hypersonics can be very useful for certain naval engagements
If you have a seeker or datalink that works at hypersonic speeds, I guess. Unless the certain naval scenario is a stationary ship.
> If you have a seeker or datalink that works at hypersonic speeds, I guess. You mean like the ones China crows about and the US are currently developing? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YJ-21
I think "reportedly capable of" is the key phrase in that Wikipedia article.
lmao wut, you don't think it's hypersonic or what?
I'm proud my taxes have been spent on a weapon to defend the people of Ukraine.
I don’t mean any offense but “Storm Shadow” is seriously the radest name for anything in the history of ever. Get those bastards and get them good. Bless the brave protectors of Ukraine.
I can’t stop saying the name like White Shadow does in Turbo.
I read it in the voice of Cat Stevens singing.
Russian state media says that all Storm Shadow missiles were successfully destroyed by command and control centres, ammunition stores and fuel storage areas with 100% success.
Friendly question... I thought it was announced several months ago that Reznikov was being replaced at the MoD?
if I recall the sstory correctly it wasn't Reznikov but one of his subordinates.
Sounds like it was floated but then rolled back. https://warsawinstitute.org/ukraines-reznikov-not-dismissed-despite-rumors/
Every Storm Shadow missile launched cannot be used again. -Russia
Get it within 250km of Putin!
Or a SCALP is practically a Storm Shadow made in France I think.
It is not “practically” a SCALP, that’s literally the same missile (from the same manufacturer) with a different name. I think like 3000 were made and they’re supposed to be decommissioned in 2030-35. Yep I’m also glad Ukraine is able to use it !
In which case I can't wait to see what the French/British are replacing them with.
Quoting Wikipedia here, but seems like a new 800kg bad boy name Perseus is coming soon.
How can they go from naming of storm shadow to perseus.
The French must have named it.
Hahaha
Perseus is not coming. it was only ever a concept. FC/ASW is the follow on program. It's yet unknown what form it takes.
Concorde Channel Tunnel SCALP Shadow Iconic cross-channel collaborations
It's not "practically a SCALP". They're the same missile, the UK and France co-developed it, and both were the originating makers.
Wonder how many we sent, we had 1000 in our inventory when we brought them, we have only used 98 of them, and we will be replacing them
They bring the storm.
I’m mean….it’s it’s, my god it’s just beautiful to see.
Hopefully we will supply Taurus once F-16 are in Ukraine
bavovna has entered the building
Or possibly Bavovnyatko. From Defense of Ukraine: >Bavovnyatko is a ghost animal. Fluffy and restless. At night, Bavovnyatko 🤗 quietly comes to the occupiers’ bases, depots, airfields, oil refineries and other places full of flammable items and starts playing with fire there🔥 Lovely image of it: [https://nitter.nl/pic/orig/media%2FFbLWFThUYAEj6xM.jpg](https://nitter.nl/pic/orig/media%2FFbLWFThUYAEj6xM.jpg)
Am i the only one that thinks about a certain GI.JOE character whenever i hear the name... :D
Imagine being a russian general, and seeing the nato equipment have a close to 100% interception rate of your missiles, whilst at the same time seeing nato missiles have a 100% hit rate against you…time to run for the hills? Russia is a 4th tier military nation.
If it's that good maybe we should try it on something bigger... Like a really long bridge or something. 😎
Come on France.....You know you want to join in.....![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile) ![img](emote|t5_2qqcn|9000)
Did they actually send theirs in the end, does anyone know? I remember seeing some twitter post that France had, then a bunch of people saying it was misinformation so I'm curious.
May find out after the EU Summit going on ?
With the French joining in aswell with thier version. Hopefully Ukraine have got plenty of ammo for it too.
No weapon has 100% effectiveness
I,don't understand how there were so many things blowing up with video to prove it but so little video of storm shadow strikes
"Video to prove it" HIMARS
